Carter stayed crouched where he was, even as he heard pistols barking. I need a line of sight, give me a line of sight. If he could only see into the room where the victim was, then they were golden. Without it, Carter could do all the fancy popping around he'd like -- but he wouldn't be getting inside.

I'll make one.

Carter stepped fully into the hallway, now, drawing his sidearm at last. He flicked the hammer back and raised his weapon all in one smooth motion -- but not towards Dannyl. The Extractor sent three precise rounds into the misted glass window of room 103, angling them up so that the bullets would wind up somewhere in the --

-- contact.

With his line of sight, Carter vanished. Sonya would not have seen him, and if Dannyl had his back turned, he might have only heard shots and seen nothing.

"My name is Carter Fleetham. I'm a liasion agent with the WCPD, and I'm here to get you all out of here."

The Extractor glanced at the door he had just gone through, and then around the classroom. There were no windows. Why did they have to be in the one classroom that didn't have windows? No problem. Be calm, relax. Imagine the plaza. It burned your retinas this morning it was so bright, you have that place in mind .. you can do it ..

They didn't have much time. Carter reached out, and grasped the arm of a girl.

"Do you trust me?" he asked her firmly.

Before his grip on the girl's arm tightened, Carter took in everything around him. Everything. The feel of his shoes on the linoleum, the position of the fluorescent lights above him, the marks on the whiteboard, the desks and odd chairs stacked here and there, the hamster cage by the heater that needed changing --

-- and suddenly it became nothing.

The nothing would have taken the child by surprise, but so tight was Carter's grip on her arm that she might not have even noticed it. Nothing came and passed -- within a half second, there was stone, blinding white, breeze, cars, and the sound of water in a fountain. Wing City Plaza.

"Stay here!" the Extractor commanded the child, cupping her face in his hands. Carter was a man who looked as though he could be trusted -- he was old enough to be someone's trusted teacher, someone's father even. The warm touch of his hands rocketed away in a second as he left the girl there, passing past the nothing until he felt speckled tile under his feet once more, instead of white flagstone.

"You're next," Carter gripped Nathan on the shoulder. "Do you trust me?"

"Look at me. Don't talk, just look at me. You can't be thinking about other things. You have to look at me, and you have to just think about me, and you have to trust me. Don't ask anything else, don't think about anything else. Do you trust me?"

Carter could hear the crunching sounds, the thwacking .. it was starting to make him worried. Calm. Calm down, Carter. Breathe in, breathe out. You've done this for years. It was a constant struggle.

Carter's grip on the boy's shoulder tightened -- the Extractor managed to withdraw himself from what was going on in one place, and focus on where he was going. His feet touched down and Nathan would have found himself in Wing City Plaza with the girl from before.

"Stay here! Don't move!" Carter ordered. He turned on his heel and was gone.

There was nothing, and then there was a classroom. Carter grabbed the arm of another child (a smaller boy this time) and he didn't even need to ask him. The child wrapped his arms around the man's chest, and Carter passed them both safely through the nothing.

Don't think about where you're going. Just hold on to me. Trust me.

He kept his mind clear as well as he could -- but there were still ten kids left when Carter heard the barricade breaking down for real.

Carter Fleetham strolled into the bar with his hands in his pockets, thinking idly about how much Wing City had changed.

The man stopped short on the bar's figurative threshold, not flapped in the slightest by the raucous scene in front of him.

Maybe things haven't changed that much ..

Carter neatly sidestepped the screeching patrons, and made his way up to the actual counter itself.

"Evening, Dom. Remember me?"

Dom, who appeared perfectly content to let the screaming and hollering go on so long as no one was trying to rip off his counter stock, looked up from his crossword to fix Carter with his usual hard, gray stare.

"You .. " the old man said, wrinkling his eyebrows. "Carter? Jude's youngest boy? By Aramei, what're you doing back here?"

The closest thing to a smile crossed the grizzled fellow's face as he set down his pencil and waddled over to where Carter sat.

"Last we heard, y'all cleared out to the States!"

"Yeah. Moved to Minnesota. Joined the SCD eventually. But I'm back, now, working with Katy's people as a liaison," Carter gave a modest shrug. "And a lot has changed."

"You'll still see the same faces around here, boy. The same names, too. Same families, same powers. It's been, what, a quarter of a century since I last laid eyes on you? Take a stroll around the city."

"Oh, I have. Even at night, the only thing that's different are the names in the plaza. But you're still the same, same as I left you. Just a little older, and grayer."

"And fatter!" Dom chuckled, patting his belly.

About ten minutes later, Carter was sipping on a draft brew deep in conversation with Dom about his training as an Extractor, and its implications.

"Always knew you were the type. Calm, level-headed. Smart, too. You'd know how to handle yourself. Not like those Ignitors. Bloody idiots, they are!"

"It was a little scary the first few times, but I got the hang of it. That was just taking myself. First training mission, I almost ended up in Ontario."

"How far off mark were you?"

"About eighty miles."

Dom snorted.

Having spent his formative years calmly in the chaos of Wing City and then later in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Carter was no stranger to oddities or even Chicago itself. He strolled coolly down the sidewalk, neatly side-stepping cans of alcohol, napkins, and twisted bags of cotton candy.

"Drunk mages are easy to find. Don't worry about it. It's our job just to keep 'em contained. Generally, they know they're gonna be trouble."

Carter had them cross the street, ducking closer and closer to the sounds of the parade.

"I miss this, y'know? My mom's side is Irish. My dad's side is, well, Terran."

"You're of-age, right?"

"Har, har. I'm twenty-two. And you shouldn't be thinking about drinking anyways. We're on the job."

"I'm thinking about you drinking, honestly. You'd fit in more with this crowd. I'm juu-uust at that age where if i started to hang around with these folks, I'd look creepy."

"What? No. You're like, what. Mid-thirties. I've seen your file."

"Oh, have you."

"Carter Francis Fleetham."
