A woman in a black suit entered the bar with the help of a gentlemen who offered to hold the door for her. It sent a rather sour feeling to settle in the bit of stomach as she didn't want the man's help. Just because she used a cane did not mean that she was unable to help herself with a door. Despite her ill thoughts on the situation, Claire still ended up taking the man's offer, her eyes low and ashamed of herself. What was the point in declining them, they would just get pissed off.

"Goddamnit," she mumbled to herself while walking across the room towards the bar counter. It was fairly empty aside from just a single man, so it wasn't difficult to acquire a seat. Once Claire sat down, she hung the crook of her cane on the bar and leaned on an elbow while peering at the silent newscast. What she wouldn't give to be back out on the field doing what she believed she was born to do: catch criminals.

Once the news flashed to useless filler, she allowed her gaze to roam a bit, taking in the various details of the room and especially those of the people surrounding her.

An offer of a drink came from her right side and Claire turned her attention towards the voice. It happen to belong to the man who she saw sitting not a couple of stool away. The woman's smile was insecure, a shadow of what it used to be, and it was difficult for her to make eye contact with the stranger.

"Oh, I-I," she said while her hand fumbled in her blazer pocket," I'm not sure that I would keep good company. Maybe your date"—she assumed—"is just running late". Claire pulled forth a wrinkled pack of cigarettes and a metallic zip lighter. Then while staring at the cane on the counter, the woman thought on the prospect of having real company. It had been such a long time since someone had actually volunteered to visit her aside from Anduin, who well, only visited her for a single reason; sex.

Claire chewed on her lip for a moment before taking in a breath and turning her attention back to the man, "You know what. Why not. I could use a drink anyway. Its been a long day for me. Job hunting in this city isn't exactly easy, especially when you want something in the police force."

The way the man spoke was odd and yet fascinating. Claire didn't think that people actually spoke this way outside of movies or television programs. She was finding herself interested in this man and quite charmed. Her smile turned into something a bit more genuine and a fraction more of what it used to be. Even her eyes smiled too.

"Well, I'm sorry that your company for the evening decided against spending a night with you," Claire said while staring oddly at the robotic machine after dragging her eyes away from her new acquaintance. Instantly her expression changed into confusion. It was her first week here in Wing City and this was the first time that she had actually went to a place that didn't deal with business. Looking down into her lap, Claire fiddled with her lighter and fag, while blush rose up on her cheeks.

"I, uh, I don't know how to order ... I've never been here before," she admitted while laughing in a self-conscious manner.

"Oh," was all she said before placing an order for a scotch and cola. She then took the time to light her cigarette without even asking if her current company minded. Even though Claire was well-mannered, she wasn't always as much as she should be at all times. Tobacco was the only thing that was keeping her sane these days and stopped her from ripping her hair out.

At the question, Claire nodded her head,"Yes. I've only been in the city for a few days. Its quite different where I come from but not much bigger. I adore big cities. The country just doesn't suite my tastes. I can't really call a place home without the smell of car emissions, and rotting garbage in the street, neighbors screaming at each other, gun shots down the street. The usual." By the reports she had seen on the news, it was easily seen that Claire had chosen a good place to retire—not retire.

"What about you," she said before taking a drag from her cigarette," have you always lived here?"

It seemed more often than not that Claire was showing up at this place. It was most likely because an assortment of people came here each day and she perhaps hoped that Kale would find this place too. Maybe if all these strange beings came here, her brother would too. Cane firmly in hand, the acting Director of WCPD limped her way over to the bar counter and sat down. There was only a small moment where she looked around at the patrons, hoping to see that familiar face, but not too long afterwards the Terran woman pulled up the holomenu and idly browsed.

Claire smiled after watching Nick and Gina—though having not met the two before, the woman had no idea what their names were. It was a cute scene and one that wasn't seen to often anymore by Claire. Usually it was dead bodies that needed examining or ... parts that needed identifying. Morose but it was her passion. Turning her gaze away, Claire smiled at the robotic server which had placed her pinot grigio down before her.

It wasn't long before Claire finished her white wine. Without further ado, the woman rose from her bar stool and removed herself from the building. There was work to be done and the city never slept.

The Director of WCPD had been sitting at the bar for hours upon hours. There was no possible way that she could preform her duty and her job. Perhaps it was time to step down even if she had just secured the job. Wing City would have been better off without a depressed and mopping Director. Claire sighed and ran a finger down her cold glass of wine, creating a trail in the condensation.

"I knew I shouldn't have left you alone," the woman said to herself, softly.

Claire flinched very slightly when a man had come and sat down next to her. She had not been expecting company or even realized that people were in the bar. The Director looked past Adam to see another man before returning her gaze. "I'm not sad, really," Claire said with little to no convincing of the lie she just told. "I'm fine," she said again while wrapping her fingers around the wine glass.

The cane which was always perched up on the bar, dangling above the floor, fell and made a rather loud clatter. It forced Claire to sigh. It was going to be very difficult for her to stand up without it and bend over to retrieve it. So, instead of doing that, the woman just remained sitting where her lame leg had no ill effect on what she was doing.

Claire sighed and shook her head. "No, I don't need your help. I told you, I am fine. I just miss someone. That's all," she said while taking a drink of her Pinot Grigio. Usually the woman was a scotch and coke with a cigar on the side, but since leaving Burden and losing not only her leg but her brother, things seemed to change with Claire.

Her eyes roamed over the other two but it wasn't long after that Claire returned her gaze back to her wine glass, studying the way the light glimmered off the condensation. She never did comment on the cane.

"Belkans? I'm sorry. I don't know who they are," Claire said truthfully. "I'm sorry for your loss. It seems that a lot of people who come here have lost something dear to them. I'm no exception," the woman admitted which brought the thought of her brother back into full gear. There was no way the Crime Lord had gotten to Kale. Claire had killed her, sacrificing a leg to do so. However, that didn't mean some of the gangsters with grudges didn't go after him.

It was hard to Claire to fight back the tears, but clenching her jaw just put them off for that much longer.

"I'd rather not have a psychological exam from someone I don't know in a bar," Claire said with a small bit of annoyance. That was the last thing that she needed. Claire didn't want to talk to anyone about her brother and did not plan to get personal with anyone. That was what had put Kale in danger in the first place. Why did she have to go and pursue a career in Burden City which had the expect life span of a fly?

When another patron had entered, ripping off the door, Claire paid no mind. Such acts were common and unimpressive. It was more impressive when someone actually used the door.

As soon as contact had been made by Adam, Claire saw something she could have never envisioned herself. Suddenly there was pain, severe pain, and the woman began to flail, scream, and cry at the bar. On the outside it seemed like nothing had happened and she was just a crazed woman, but on the inside only Adam knew that all of it was his doing. Claire eventually fell out of her stool, having the wind knocked out of her. Hands immediately went to touch her face to feel that her skin was still there; still unburned.

What had just happened?

Adam again touching Claire sent another image to the woman. She began to convulse under his touch, each of her nerves sending signals of sheer pain and agony to her mind. Tears poured down her cheeks in a torrent, and choked cries met Adam's ears. The pain was so great, Claire could not even beg for help from the very person which was causing her misery. Claire could only hope that she survived whatever this was and would live another day to see Kale.

Claire reached out and clung to Adam, pulling tight against the man that she hardly knew and continued crying into his shoulder. It was hard to find words and eventually she just gave up on attempting to speak. The horror which she had just witnessed was beyond anything Claire had ever experienced. Mostly so because it was all in her mind and none of it was physical. Had her mind finally given in? Had she finally gone crazy? Was this the end of her sanity?

Those were the only questions Claire could ask herself while begging to God that the pain and images never came back.

There were voices all around her, and the sound of Adam's heart beating. She just wanted all of it to go away; to disappear. Why couldn't she ever be left alone. Claire had thought getting back into work and focusing on that would make her think of Kale less, but it didn't pan out the way she had planned. It made her think of her missing brother even more. Thinking on him again, as she was wont to do, Claire began to cry even more into Adam's shoulder. Any physical pain was nothing compared to the pain of losing her beloved brother.

It must have been pathetic to witness an older and career successful woman like Claire, curled up like a child and crying in public.

Claire, finally given into her grief nodded in agreement with Adam. Yes, some privacy would be best especially since Claire felt as if the tears were not going to stop for a while. The floodgates had been opened and it was going to be difficult to close them. The woman had to cling to Adam and support most of her weight on her good leg while he helped her stand.

The hand stroking her back was more than a comfort to Claire. The way that Adam's hand glided over her silk shirt, well, it was all that the Terran woman could focus on. It was the only thing which was keeping her sane and without horrible visions or unexplained pain. Worst of it all—best of it all—was that Claire had stopped thinking on her brother. There were no more thoughts on Kale. They were only focused on Adam and the way he ran his fingers along her spine.

It was an entrancing motion too. Each time she felt as if she were floating away into a dreamscape however, Claire felt the nagging pain of reality and woke up back to full consciousness. All the woman could do was lay there and silently weep, hoping that all of this was nothing more than a nightmare. She'd wake up soon, Claire just knew it.

Claire nodded weakly, far too tired to say anything or even tilt her head up to see who it was at the door. If the woman had seen the display of power which Adam held, then suspicion as to her condition would have been made. No such thing occurred and still Claire was left in the dark as to what was really plaguing her.

Just a dream. Just a terrible dream. It will pass.

Claire hugged the pillow closer to her head and closed her eyes more tightly. It did not matter that there was another in the room nor that Adam was speaking to him. She just wanted to concentrate on the man's motion on her back with his hand. It made all the pain go away. Just focus on that and you'll be okay, Claire told herself.

Glimpses of the conversation which was going on around Claire were captured but not registered in her mind. She heard the men speaking around her, but the Terran woman did not realize what the nature of it was exactly. All she could feel was the hand stroking her back, giving her release from the torment previously experienced. So comforting ... so relaxing ...

Claire began to feel herself drift back into sleep and was falling into unconsciousness quickly. Maybe this time she would actually stay asleep. Slowly her limbs began to go limp and her breathing started to regulate. Even her quiet sobs had ceased.

Just focus on Adam's hand.
