Darren Samson

Twenty-three is an awkward age. Puberty is long gone, and really you should have a job, but not this young man. He still busks and hopes to 'make it big'...

Description

Darren Samson Image

  • Darren Samson was born on the thirtieth of November, 1989 to Darren Samson Senior and Samantha Samson nee Rob. As queer as his little family may be, they are quite a close knit group and tend to exaggerate their affection in public as if to prove that their family cell is the closest and most interesting one out there.
  • Darren himself is a perky young man who often enjoys a spot of busking outside the local shopping centre or even Gambit's Bar (although he's been warned many a time not to risk it; some people just couldn't appreciate a bit of Brit). He has few close friends and many acquaintances from school and artist events he takes part in now and again, but feels that he is at that period in life where he requires more than the plucking of a guitar string to sate his dreams -- perhaps the plucking of some heartstrings is in order?
  • By no means unattractive, Darren has had his fair share of medium-term relationships, one night flings and 'the one' has been found several times already. According to one of his peers, the problem isn't that he's a commitmentphobe or a terrible boyfriend, but that he perhaps hasn't embraced his entire sexuality quite yet and just needs to broaden his horizons a bit if he wants to find the right person to settle down with (and, let's face it, he isn't going to find that person whilst busking on the streets or singing in run down pubs, is he? This isn't a romantic comedy).
  • Darren has a few quirks, the most obvious being that he's a complete Britney Spears fan. If he isn't singing Britney, he's singing someone who did a cover of Britney, and if he isn't singing that, he's probably eating or sleeping. This young man is intelligent, although not in the educated sense. He couldn't tell you how to factor a polynomial or write down the equation of a sine wave, but he's charismatic and quick on the uptake of practical skills. At school, home economics and technological studies were his forte.
  • As well as these few oddities, Darren also carries numerous legal pads with him, upon which he notes ideas, thoughts and feelings about particular sights, sounds or smells. He isn't quite sure why. Darren enjoys games of Noughts and Crosses, especially when they're impromptu - like on a foggy bus window or on some unsuspecting citizen's back - and tends to be fascinated by pans, the justification for which is that 'they're just so damn useful'. Finally, Darren abhors staring competitions. Not only does he think they're a waste of time, but he's had a lifelong fear of his eyes drying out midway through a competition and becoming blind. It is believed that stemmed from nightmares of a creepy kid at school who used to stare a lot, wherein the child would remove Darren's eyes with a Bagpuss spoon.
  • Finally, Darren has decided that his ultimate goal in life is to meet Britney Spears and be her backing vocals. Failing that, Darren has decided that he would quite happily settle for marrying a Brit-look-a-like, someone who loves Britney as much as he does, or someone who can stand him singing her songs and not become jealous about it.

So begins...

Darren Samson was torn between crying and having a hissy fit, both of which would've had John in stitches. "John - listen, John. Um. It's just music stuff we're playing about with, and I know you're not really that interested in that, so --"

"Are those two together, then?" John asked, more amused than cowed by Cassie's anger.

"Yes!" Darren almost yelled, jumping onto a plausible excuse that didn't lead to him being a girl. "Yes! Exactly! So maybe you should go out and see someone else, because clearly you've stepped on toes here!"

"Jeez... Guess you're the woman in that relationship then," John nodded at Nathan with a twisted smile. "Your woman 'defending' your honour, there, mate?"

Darren captured that 'deer caught in the headlights' look quite spectacularly at this point. Cassie's glare prior to and John's stiffening after Nathan's admittance went completely out of his head, and all Darren could think about now was that he was in so much shit.

"I --"

John laughed. It wasn't a pleasant laugh. It was a cruel one.

"So you are on the pull then, Pansy, but for a gay."

"Wh --"

"I knew it! No one just sings all of that gay crap for fun!" John once again nudged Darren, but it wasn't one of the playful nudges as beforehand. It had Darren nearly tripping over his feet. "Jesus, Darren, what the fuck is wrong with you? Are you trying to make it worse, inviting them here? You're only going to get worse!"

Darren stared, wide-eyed as Cassie moved towards John, but neither said a word nor made a move himself.

John, however, was sneering down at Cassie. "Listen, lady, I don't know who you think you are, but I've known him a helluva lot longer, so why don't you back off, hm?" The manner in which he leant forward, almost over Cassie, was clearly meant to be threatening. "Why don't you get the fuck out instead and let the men do the talking? You're only going to get yourself hurt if you keep pointing your damned finger at me!"

"John!" Darren had finally spoken up, outraged at the way the man was threatening a girl.

"What?" John turned in an instant, scowling at his supposed friend. "Going to tell me not to hit a girl? Couldn't hit you then, could I, you fucking freak," he spat. "Shut up, Darren."

John did choke on a breath of air, shocked more than anything (and okay, his eyes were watering, but really... that was a sensitive area), before he seemingly realised what was happening. He gasped out another of his less than pleasant laughs.

"That was a bitch move," he growled out at Cassie, straightening from where he had bent over double. "Fuck..."

Darren looked between the three with utter apprehension. "John, just go, p--"

Too late. John, rather than doing the smart thing and just leaving, actually lunged towards Cassie, a fist raised.

Darren felt his stomach drop inches.

Darren watched as John moved... then was stopped -- and Nathan hadn't been there a second before, he was sure of it -- by the other man... and then John was stumbling towards the door, a strange look on his face when he glanced back at the group when he fumbled the door open.

"Fucking watch yourself, Samson," was shouted over a shoulder when John ran out.

Darren watched as the door continued to inch open even after John had fled.

"Should -- I should get more tea. I'll go get more tea," Darren stated hastily, on his way to the kitchen already. Once again, he seemed intent on hiding.

Darren, by the time that Nathan had walked through to the small kitchen, had set the kettle to boil and was in process of spooning sugar into a stripy cup.

“You should’ve just gone with what I was telling him,” the musician insisted, his back still towards Nathan under the guise of making the tea. “He’d have left if you’d just gone with it. I didn’t know he was going to – he was supposed to be at work today,” he finished, lifting the kettle. “If I’d known he was coming over, I would’ve said something.”

Darren Samson replaced the kettle on its base and turned to lean against the counter, facing Nathan. "Maybe you shouldn't have done it for John's stupid beliefs, but you could have done it for me." Not that he was trying to come off as selfish or anything... "He's going to go out and tell all of our mates what happened and he's going to put his own twist to it."

Darren turned again in order to pick up the two cups he had prepared. "I made more tea."

The other man shook his head and wandered over to Nathan, tea in hand. "It doesn't matter any more, really, does it? What's done is done and damn the consequences and so on. Could we just go through again? Is Cassie alright? My Mum usually makes tea when folk're upset, so..." Darren shrugged and looked at Nathan. "Let's go..."

"If you're talking about how homophobic he is, no, I don't participate in what he does. I did know that he's not all that... accepting, but I didn't think it was -- I did think it was that bad. S'why I haven't told anyone," he stated vaguely. "And yeah, he is nice sometimes. When it's just me and him, he doesn't call me Pansy or princess or anything. He only acts up when there are people there to 'impress', I guess..."

Darren retook his seat and contemplated his calloused hands for a moment. "Most of my friends were his friends first," he added, "and most of them are like him. He's going to tell them all."

"Well, luckily for me, I don't have to make that decision any more. They're not going to want me to be around them after John goes and tells them how gay I am and how I'm 'entertaining' at my house now. Except he'll make it out that I was shoving it into his face or something."

The young adult stood again, all nerves and irritation. "It doesn't matter -- you came here to jam, didn't you? Well... Let's jam. D'you play something Cassie, or..?"

Changing the subject. Class.

Darren, relieved that the subject had been dropped so easily, went over to the box of music supplies sitting at the side of the TV and started to rummage through it. After a moment, he made a triumphant noise and untangled a microphone from the mess, along with what looked like a very small amplifier. "How about a real microphone, instead?" he offered, turning to look at Cassie with a genuine grin. "I'm pretty sure I've even got a stand somewhere, if you fancy grooving?" he teased. "What d'you think, Nathan?"

Darren Samson snorted, rolling his eyes. "Come on, Cassie! I'm not going to dance all by myself... And I think it's pretty much up to you what you're gonna sing," he laughed. "And y'don't have to sing Britney or anything -- I know a lot of modern songs," the man added, jerking a thumb over his shoulder at the magazine rack full of sheet music. "And most of them are female artists."

Darren Samson shook his head, sniggering away to himself as he picked up his guitar and retook his seat on the short stool. "You're just not very helpful at all, are you? You would be no use in making a setlist for gigs, would you?" Darren asked, thoroughly amused. "Name a song. Any song. Musical, rock, pop..? Even if you say 'ACDC' --" and here Darren paused to shudder, putting on the gesture elaborately "-- I might be able to accommodate you."

After much glossing over of the situation that had occurred earlier, the three had dissolved into general chatter following the amusement of Cassie's singing (and Darren's occasional wiggling) and then the option of drinks had been brought up once again, and off Darren had sauntered, into his kitchen in order to pick up three glasses and a few bottles of nice things.

During this hunting-gathering, Darren's home phone, sat on an end table beside the sofa, had started to ring.

"Someone get that?" the young musician called, amusement tingeing his voice. "It'll be my mother, phoning to ask how life is and if I need my laundry done again!"

"Oh my fucking God," the person on the other end of the line, clearly male and possibly a bit tipsy if the slur was anything to go by, snorted down the receiver. "That guy is still there? Where's the queer, huh? Where's Princess?"

More laughter joined in with this comment. More than one person was listening.

"Who is it?" Darren called, clinking glasses and gathering bottles as he spoke. "If it is Mum, tell her I'll phone her tomorrow! I have a social life!"

Raised eyebrows and a confused expression accompanied Darren's return to the living room, three glasses in one hand and two bottles in the other (with another tucked under his arm). "Nothing important? Like one of those telesales people? Huh. I thought they'd stopped calling when I registered with that service -- TPS or whatever it's called," he commented idly as he placed the two bottles of alcohol and one bottle of what appeared to be virgin citrus juice on the table along with the cups.

"I didn't know what y'all fancied, so there's both alcohol and non-alcohol drinks," he grinned.

Darren himself took a seat and was just reaching for his own glass when he heard Cassie huff. He tilted his head at her an raised an eyebrow, clearly questioning the sound.

"Are you okay? You're not bored, are you? I mean, we could watch a movie or something, or... Something, you know?"

Sometimes Darren didn't even know what he was saying, so it was no surprise if someone else didn't get it either.

"And I suppose you're not drinking?" Darren then asked, levelling Nathan with a charming, teasing grin. "I do have a spare room and --"

The phone rang once again.

"Jeez, if that's that weird company again..." Darren muttered, standing in order to reach over and pick up the phone.

Darren Samson frowned, hand hovering over the phone settled in its cradle. "But if I don't pick it up, it'll just go to voice mail."

And, as if to prove this point, the phone stopped ringing and emitted a loud beep before the sounds of snickering men came from the cradle-mounted speaker.

"Pansy! You too busy being a manwhore to answer the fucking phone?"

Darren stared at the phone for a moment longer and then picked the handset up.

"You know what, Jamie, even if I --"

"He even talks like a queer, oh my God!"

"Fuck off, Jamie."

"Did you hear that? He told me to fuck off?" Apparently this was uproariously hilarious, because all of those listening burst out laughing. Darren didn't seem to have any inhibition regarding handing the phone to Cassie at this point, and did so almost gratefully.

"Pansy -- Pansy, have you actually got yourself a boyfriend?" the man Darren named as Jamie asked in a most condescending fashion. "Has he got low standards or does he just like guys that think they're girls, Princess?"

Darren Samson watched as Cassie wandered off with his phone and then looked back to Nathan with an odd smile. "Guess that's why I was in Narnia," he joked with an awkward laugh. "I thought they were calling me Princess because my middle name meant 'prince' and they thought I was girly - not that that's much better, but..."

He gestured towards the doorway Cassie had walked through.

"Sorry."
