Joan Barker's Story

Joan Barker tinkers away at her camera while muttering to herself. A small snapping sound would indicate that an internal piece in her equipment just broke in half and she sighs a bit in defeat. "Well... that puts a damper on things."
Joan Barker happened to look up from fixing her camera and notices a young girl step in. Usually being the type to not really say anything, she shrugged her shoulders and thought that maybe... she could talk for a while. She calls out to Serenity in a rather monotone voice. "Hello there. Are you new? I am," she started, her eyes blinking rather unemotionally.
Joan Barker thought on Serenity's words for a moment and shrugged. "Why would I say that? Huh." She shrugged but the emotion did not translate to her eyes as she went back to work. "Forgive me if I do not seem interesting... this camera needs to be fixed. Then I can properly speak to you," she droned, as if she had done this a million times. Clearly... something was not right about Joan.
Joan Barker "Act?" Joan's eyes never left her work at hand as she fixed the broken glass plane inside the camera. "I assure you... this is no act. This sort of thing is always happening," she explained as she closed her camera up. "My camera was broken but I think I have it now." She pointed the lens at Serenity, her finger ready to press the button for a snapshot. "Could you smile for me, please? A natural smile would be nice..."
Joan Barker only nodded and didn't seem at all disappointed or anger. Actually... she didn't seem like anything. "I understand completely," she replied and lowered her camera as she looked around with dull brown eyes. "I know it seems strange but I really need someone to smile for me." She looked over at Jamie the bartender and waved at her, pointing to the camera. "Could I just take a quick snapshot of you smiling? This would help me immensely."
Joan Barker raised her camera to her face, the black device covering most of her face as she took a snap shot of Jamie, muttering a 'thank goodness' under her breath. A white flashed filled the bar for a second and Joan finally lowered the camera, a big smile now replacing the gloom she felt before. "Thank you so much!" she said with a happiness that was absent before. "You have no idea how important that was to me!" Joan turned back to Serenity and sheepishly smiled, laughing a bit. "It's not an alien device... at least... I don't think so! It's tied to my emotions!"
Joan Barker tapped her finger against her lip, deep in thought. "Just water," she replied. She was feeling giddy to finally have some joy in her life. "Again, thank you very much!"
Joan Barker scratched the back of her head, shaking it. "See... I could do that. If it wasn't broken in the first place. The last shot that was taken was of this guy who just... never smiled," she explained. She knew it all sounded strange but that was her life and curse.
Joan Barker laughed and shrugged at Serenity. "I wouldn't but bratty little kids would! See... this boy who must have been ten years old or something, snatches up my camera and takes a picture of this man who was sitting next to me. First off, I can't really show panic and now I am emotionlessly trying to tell this kid..." she paused a moment in her sentence. "Is 'emotionlessly' a word? I'm not sure..." Not only was Joan now hyper but she was also prone to going off topic.
Joan Barker also takes a drink from her water, nodding in agreement. "I suppose it is... huh! And here I thought it wasn't a word and I was making things up!" She drummed her fingers on the counter as she tried to think back on her story. "So.... right! So the kid is running around and I am chasing him with absolutely no emotion showing that I am distressed. Oh, the man? He kinda just sat there... doing nothing. Anyway! So the kid finally stops and as I was about to take my camera back... he drops it on the floor." She paused again (for dramatic effect) and tried to look sad and defeated but couldn't, of course. "That was so devastating... but of course, no one saw how sad I looked." She ended her story with a grin and shrugged her shoulders.
"Well... the kid ran off before I could say anything and I hate conflict so... lesson learned! Never trust kids!" She smiled and nodded her head to Serenity. "No worries! It was nice to talk to someone! Good luck with your busy day tomorrow!"
Joan Barker jumped a bit, twitching her fingers over her camera and covered with her jacket. The last thing she needed was for it to be ruined... again. "Oh my! Looks like I've got... what is this? Whiskey?" She shook her damp arm as she waved back to Serenity and turned to see Hope. "Oh hello there!"
"Oh don't worry about it! Really! It's not everyday that I get showered with Whiskey!"Joan was just... too happy for her own good. Not that it was her fault... she really couldn't help it. Any normal person would be, at least, annoyed but not her!
Joan Barker only laughed as she waved back to Hope and then turned to the bar counter once more. Seems that Hope was busy and Joan felt she should not interrupt. Lifting her jacket, she checked on the old camera from under its little dry haven and was relieved to see that it was untouched by the flying drink. "Thank goodness," she whispered. It seemed that she said that phrase quite often...
Joan Barker couldn't help but sway a bit with the music that came from the jukebox, giggling to herself at the selection. It certainly was a classic!
Joan Barker was too happy to refuse Xian the Bard and sang along, now dancing in her seat. Being emotionless for a week and a half can really do wonders to someone but now she can finally smile!
Joan Barker was in mid-sway when she stopped and looked over at Crystal. The girl was not exactly the picture of joy and Joan tried to sympathizes but alas... she felt no sadness. Of course, that didn't stop the photographer from talking to the girl. "Hey... you ok?" she said gently with a tiny smile.
Joan Barker blinked a bit at the man's actions and would have been angry... if she could be angry. "Hey now... how about leaving the girl alone, hmm?" she said softly, lifting hand to stop the man's advances. Even with that stupid small smile on her face, Joan tried her hardest to look angry or displeased. No such luck.
Joan Barker sat there, laughing under her breath at the violent action that took place before her. In the inside she was shocked into fear. But on the outside... her grin never left her face. "Oh wow... that is rather interesting..." she said nervously and quickly ducked her head as she gathered her jacket and camera. No need for her to be here... not when she couldn't even show an ounce of fear on her face. "I should probably back away now... Good luck to you, my dear!" she called out cheerily to Crystal.
