"Perhaps that's how this place is! After all, they say when you're normally violent person, you're often very pleasant every other time, so I'm sure that woman has a wonderful personality on her best days," Leela stated with a grin.

Nora stared at her flatly. "You are not allowed to talk to Uncle Garrett anymore. He has gotten into that little head of yours."

She turned her attention to the bookstore owner, and she could not help but allow that same smile she'd given him earlier to become pleasant once more. It had a warm, inviting quality to it. "Why, you certainly understand how to speak well of your company. I am flattered. Yes, I think a book club would be lovely. It would help to get acquainted with others around the area, as well." She looked out toward the door. "Well. If they aren't assaulted every time they come around the area."

Leela sneered at the obvious going between the bookstore owner and her mother. She didn't particularly care for the romance between her mother and father, but seeing her with someone so much older than her, yet so much younger than her mother was...bothering.

Phil continued to smile at Nora, quite beyond being affected by Leela's insane comments, then looked around the book shop. "I wish I had some reading material to offer you for the duration of the evening." He perked up and began digging through his satchel. "You know, I really think this shop could be something. I need to find out a bit more about the area, but these woods definitely have a unique charm."

As he continued rifling, Phil pulled out a number of books with titles in English, French, Greek, and Latin, along with a few that didn't have titles on the covers. "I'll have to get an idea of what the folks around here like to read before I put any sizable orders to the distib- AH! Here it is." He pulled out an old hardcover with Latin on the spine. "Do you read Latin, madame?"

"Oh, if you want to know more about the area, you ought to know there are vampi-" Leela's sentence was cut short as her mother's hand planted firmly over her mouth. Through the whole action, Nora's expression did not change, and she kept her eyes on Mister Wolfinson.

"Not well. Though much of it has to do with Pramia's history- oh, Pramia is my home planet, apologies- I never did get the chance to learn very much." She paused as Leela clawed at her mother's hand, which was removed in a warningly slow manner. "What is this wonderfully aged book here?"

"I heard something about vampires in the area, yes. I was thinking I might keep the shop open overnight for them, but I'd have to hire an overnight person."

He held the book out to Nora. "Well, this one is is the collected works of Cicero, specifically his essays on friendship and civil service." Philius was clearly very excited about this as he looked at the cover, emphasizing the importance of it. "It's in the original Latin. Imagine reading his words directly from nearly two-thousand years ago!"

"Oh. So you know," drolled Leela, suddenly impassive. She put her chin in her palm. "Werewolves, too. And ghosts. And demons and necromancers and-"

"Leela."

"-kittens."

Nora held out her hand to take the book, looking it over carefully. She marveled as she carefully flipped through the pages, eyes lidded as she angled the book to the light. "Goodness gracious, this is astounding. I regret not keeping up with my lessons. I'll have to go back to them!"

He addressed Leela with a note of thanks. "I can't say that I knew about the werewolves and ghosts... or the kittens."

Philius turned to Nora, suddenly a bit timid, then looked back down at his pile of of books. Some looked quite new, though the majority were easily a century or more old. "You know, I used to tutor Latin, Missus Carroll. I would be happy to make some time to do so again if... if that's of interest to you."

"Oh. That would be very nice of you, Mister Wolfinson. My, you're extending so many favors. I must invite you to the manor for dinner sometime."

Leela opened her mouth to protest, but could only manage a gape. The look said it all. Are you kidding?

"Close your mouth, Leela. That's unbecoming," her mother commented. "Well, if we take a peek outside and see if all the commotion has died down, I think Leela and I will be on our way, but you can be assured we will visit... in the very least, I will visit... tomorrow. I'm sure my husband would love to see this place, as well."

There was a momentary tightness in his eyes at the mention of her husband, but Phil quickly dismissed his jealousy as absurd. He'd only just met this woman... even if he did find her charming beyond words.

"That would be absolutely wonderful, I'm sure. I look forward to meeting him and the rest of your family. Your invitation is most generous, and though I should avoid putting you to any trouble over my small kindnesses, I must admit my curiosity overwhelms my propriety, so I accept."

Philius escorted the two ladies to the rear exit and opened it for them. Before moving aside, he captured Nora's hand in his and bent at the waist in a moderate bow, resisting the urge to place a peck atop it by the narrowest of margins. "It has been my profound pleasure to make your acquaintance, madame..." He gave Leela a slight bow, still holding her mother's hand. "... and mademoiselle. This exit should allow you to avoid any unpleasantness by escaping the sight of that... young woman with the truck. It is almost light out, but I will escort you home, as propriety demands, if you wish it. Otherwise, I am off to bed with the hope of your company on the morrow. It will be a welcome respite from what will likely otherwise be a day of dusting and furniture arranging."

"Don't turn this into a fight, lady. This is Gae Ceann territory, vankoryth forces will come down on your ass." The bouncer cocked his shotgun to check the shells left in the barrels, pulling his shirt up to reveal his open ribcage and the glowing orb beside his beating heart and then pulling it back down. "That ain't gonna do shit except scratch the paint on our pub." Hark smiled, an unhinged grin.

Hark exercised his arm. "Sicken up your herd if you need to, I've got mine right here. I just wanted to remind you, this is Gae Ceann territory, coming in here like that is fuckin' insulting." Hark spat on the floor. "Next time, take the normal car. Especially if you're coming back around these parts."

Hark was glad the group had got out of the way, that was his original intention after-all. Who said the Gae Ceann didn't look out for the people outside their clubhouse?

Callandra shrugged. "If I'm coming back, it's to redevelop." She said, rolling up the window to the truck. "This place is a frakking dump."

She threw the truck into gear, and pulled the cannon back into the bed of the truck.

"Let the military seize control of the place before we redevelop." Once the windows were rolled up, the truck burned rubber and screeched off.

Nora gave the smallest curtsy. "Why, I would not want to give you so much trouble, but if you would so li-"

"No! No, we're fine. We're completely fine!" said Leela, grabbing her mother's sleeve to drag her away. "We've had a wonderful stay and she'll certainly come back sometime, I'm sure, but daddy is waiting for us to get back soon and he might get worried." Nora was ushered out by her daughter, but not before Leela took a peek outside to make sure everything was alright. Once outside, the young redhead stuck her head back in through the door to leer at Mister Wolfinson.

"Yes, and I said daddy. My father. My mother's husband." Her eyes narrowed as she backed out, making it awfully clear that his advances on her mother were unwanted. She popped her head back in one more time.

"HUUS. BAND."

And then she was gone.

Philius gave Leela a blank look, resisting the urge to stare her down. When she was gone, he rifled through his books, came back with a worn copy of Cyrano de Bergerac, and exited the same way the ladies had. He double-checked the area, but saw only street lamps, fog, and the cobblestones glistening with morning dew in the first dim light before dawn.

He strode over to the clubhouse and rapped lightly on the door.

Hours later, after the Carroll family had long departed to the house, one woman had excused herself from dinner early. She was retiring to bed, she had said, and Leela had quickly said the very same (although one of her parents had asked Colby to keep an eye on her).

But that woman was not going to bed. She sneaked out from her bedroom window, skittered out into the night, though not without one of her father's blessed revolvers, and made her way to East Lanterna Way.

Trailing her was Leela and the servant that she had tricked into following. Colby was said to keep an eye on her, she'd said to him, but that did not mean he was supposed to stop her from leaving the house! And they needed to know where Eliza was going, after all.

The gunslinger's daughter knocked on Philius' door, politely waiting for him to answer.

"I thought it would be nicer to walk from her, and I thought it would be better if I were early. After all, if you're right on time, you're late," chimed the young lady. Once he offered his arm, Eliza gracefully accepted with a little, closed-lipped smile. "We shall."

Leela stood behind in an alley with Colby, fingers clickity-clacking on the brick of a building wall. "Why, that little lecherous wolf has got our innocent little Eliza under some kind of spell! What an incubus you are, Mister Wolfinson!" she whispered, half to herself, half to Colby, who she turned to with a scowl. "Don't just stand there saying nothing, Colby! Don't you see how disgusting it is!?"

"You know, I was a little concerned you might not come. It was quite obvious that your father doesn't care for me." Phil's eyes traveled down her neck and over her bare shoulders. He decided he rather liked Eliza's choice in evening wear. "It likely goes without saying, but I feel compelled to inform you that you look lovely tonight. I quite like that dress and it is only improved by housing such an attractive young lady."

His gait was natural, and automatically adjusted for her to walk at a comfortable pace in her dress. There was a natural flourish to the way he strolled with his walking stick. Although the shadows in this wood seemed often to be longer than they aught, the warm light cast by the gas lamps of Lanterna Way seemed to counter any discomfort.

The evening was crisp and cool, leaning toward chilly, and after a hundred or so paces Phil stopped to remove his scarf and drape it over Eliza's shoulders like a shawl. He resumed his pace without comment.

"My father is a blind man who still believes his twenty-two year old daughter is still thirteen," announced Eliza with her nose in the air. "Just like his wife. I have a mind of my own and I intent to use it to make my own decisions."

After being complimented so graciously, Eliza tucked her chin toward her chest bashfully and clasped her hands behind her back. "Well, Mister Wolfinson, a suit could only look so sharp on a man so handsome," she replied, bringing her eyes back up to meet his.

After a few minutes of walking Eliza was surprised to find the scarf tossed over her shoulders. She clasped onto it gently an thanked Phil, one hand to her cheek.

"He plays his game well! But it's awfully cheesy, isn't it, Colby? He comes off like such a sleaze! Don't you agree? Colby. Colby?" Leela looked behind her to notice that...

"... Colby, where'd you go?"

The young man had vanished.

"Although your father seems overprotective of you, and has evidently misjudged me quite badly, you mustn't forget that his intention is to do what's best for you, even if he's no longer good at knowing what that is, precisely." He smirked at her, his eyes bright with energy and admiration. Phil took another deep breath of the crisp air.

"As for you having your own mind and the capacity for adult decision making, I believe that's plain enough in the way you comport yourself. You are, without a doubt, a young lady of poise and sagacity, and I am very much looking forward to learning more about you over dinner. We are nearly there, mind. I hope you brought your appetite.'

"Oh, Mister Wolfinson, he only wants to do what's best for his nerves," she laughed. "But you do flatter me so. I believe there will be enough time to, ah, butter me up at the dinner table. My appetite never leaves, so that won't be a problem whatsoever, I assure you."

Leela kept slinking behind them, always straying away from the lights of the lanterns when she was able, ducking into alleyways that she hoped did not contain any particularly villainous creatures by chance that night. The sweet bantering between the two made her sick, but she could not leave now. Not while her precious cousin was in danger!

[[Continued from Epilogue Books]]
Phil's voice took on an unmistakably serious tone. "Miss Eliza, I assure you that I am not flattering you, but speaking the truth as I see it. I don't waste my time with unexceptional people, and I certainly don't risk angering middle-aged foreign men with large rifles by taking them on secret dates. You, Miss Eliza, have every indication of being exceptional in the precise sort of way to compliment my own eccentricity. That, to me, is priceless and woefully rare."

They were in front of what appeared to be a small Italian bistro with a hand-painted wooden sign. Philius detached himself from her side to open the door for her.

A blush came to Eliza's cheeks. "Well, if you say that, Mister Wolfinson, then how do you expect me to ever be able to escape your charm? What a net you've woven." She continued walking into the bistro as he opened the door, and the warmth and savory smells from the kitchen wafted past her in a soft breeze. She moved to the side and waited for Phil to catch up.

Leela peered in through one of the large windows to the front, but just barely. She avoided the lights spilling out of it and kept quiet as a mouse.
