Naazmat Chakladar

"Yes, I am a Hindu and I am a woman and I am an Indian. But first, I am a person. My loyalty is not to Vishnu or Krishna or Mohandas Gandhi or Susan B. Anthony. My loyalty is to the Constitution and to law and order in America."

Description

PROFILE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Naazmat is in her mid-fifties, petite, with a slight build. Her face is round, with a chiseled jaw and prominent, sloping forehead. Her round eyes are expressive, an immediate tell of her emotional train of thought, but often reflecting a sense of intelligence. She has a dark, rich chocolate complexion, and dark brown hair that falls to her thighs, usually tied back in a single braid. In the center of her forehead, affixed to the bone of her skull, is a small golden bead. She typically dresses in business professional attire when at work, or in a traditional shalwar kameez when not at work or for formal occasions.

History

Naazmat Chakladar was born in 1948, the middle child of three, to Dhamodhar and Bhavani Chakladar, born in near Jaipur in India. Naazmat attended school, excelling in the sciences and social studies, and after graduating high school, went to college for International Relations. After graduating from Syracuse University, Naazmat went to Georgetown Law School, and became a Rhodes Scholar, interning with the upper levels of the Department of Justice as a third year law student.

After earning her JD and passing the bar, Naazmat worked as a public defender for eight years in the inner city, before she served as a special advocate for special education cases in juvenile court for another three years. Later, Naazmat accepted a position as an assistant US attorney in Boston, and after nine years, advanced to the position of US Attorney when her predecessor retired. Naazmat was appointed a federal judge eight years later, and after serving for another ten years as a federal judge, Naazmat became the first ever Hindu woman appointed to a Cabinet level position as the Attorney General of the United States.

Following the American acceptance of statehood in the Aschen Confederation, Naazmat became a Chancellor in the Ministry of Law, replacing Travell.

"Yeah, who'd you pay off," Naazmat muttered darkly, turning and walking in the opposite direction, hands in her pockets.

Naazmat Chakladar ignored Raphael, wandering into the next exhibit hall. She would stay perhaps another hour or so before continuing on to other things. She had no time for his antics, or for allowing herself to lose control of her emotions on account of Raphael McGregor.

Naazmat Chakladar swept into the Triad room, her hair coiffed perfectly, the dark-skinned woman looking perfectly at home in the Aschen version of a courtroom. She looked about with an imperious expression, meeting first Kendra's eyes, and then Gretal's. Truth be told, Naazmat was a bit nervous. She had never actually done this before. She had in the past presided over court proceedings as a district judge, but that was under US law, not Aschen law. Days poring over Aschen law had left her almost exhausted by the sheer volume of it. It was like being a law student all over again.

Steeling herself, Naazmat came to stand at the raised dais, looking down on the others. She was used to looking up at others, so it was a nice change for once. She nodded, almost imperceptibly, then announced, "Triad now begins."

Naazmat Chakladar nodded, looking down at Gretal. The girl was obviously scared out of her wits. For a moment Naazmat pitied her, but then she came to her senses. Gretal wouldn't be here without a reason, and a damn good one at that. "What do you have to say for yourself, Ms. Meya?" She spoke almost expectantly, half demand, half questioning, her brown eyes raking the girl's as she leaned forward from the dais, accentuating the height difference in the construction of the Triad room.

Naazmat Chakladar softened her expression ever so slightly. "Speak up, please, Ms. Meya. What do you have to say in your defense? These are very serious charges. Surely you wish to defend yourself?" She raised her eyebrows, peering down at Gretal as she spoke.

Naazmat Chakladar shook her head. "None of the charges against you carry the death penalty, Ms. Meya. Can you please tell the Court what happened to lead to these charges?" Naazmat fixed her eyes on the accused, blinking slowly.

Naazmat Chakladar nodded. "Are you admitting to the charges? What happened after you drew your weapon?"

Naazmat Chakladar tilted her head slightly to the side, looking down at Gretal. "Did you fight these people? Did you intend to harm them in any way for any reason?" She spoke in an increasingly soft voice, though she radiated authority when she spoke.

Naazmat Chakladar nodded, looking at Kendra for a moment before looking back at Gretal. "So you admit to the charge of attempted murder, and the charge of assault?"

Naazmat Chakladar leaned over the dais. "Ms. Meya," she said, clearing her throat as she spoke, looking into Gretal's eyes, "'That other lady' was an LDA agent. Your own admission of guilt leads me to issue a verdict of guilty on the charges of resisting arrest and assault, and not guilty on the charge of attempted murder. In light of your... age... you will be sentenced to a 3900 cubit fine and a one yahren term of probation; however, if you violate the terms of probation, you will be sentenced to jail time."

Naazmat Chakladar smiled thinly. She, too, was not quite used to Aschen terms. "The cubit is the Aschen monetary unit. A yahren is about a year, in Terran terms. And probation is a type of criminal justice sentence which places you under the jurisdiction of an officer from the Ministry of Law, who is responsible for overseeing your term."

Naazmat Chakladar shook her head. "When you committed a crime, you waive your right to possess whatever weapon you like. You are a minor, and you have been duly convicted and sentenced in this court; if you continue to speak out of turn, I will hold you in contempt of this court!"

Naazmat Chakladar nodded. "Verdict has been rendered; Triad is adjourned." She looked over at Gretal one more time.

Naazmat Chakladar rose, speaking to Gretal. "You are free to go wherever you wish, provided you check in on a monthly basis to your probation officer. And pay your fine, of course."

Naazmat Chakladar swept out of the Triad room, her heart beating faster. She was relieved; her first Triad was done and she had done well. It was time to face another day, as an Aschen Chancellor. Perhaps it wouldn't turn out so badly after all. Things were looking up.

"People vs. Eri Loire," Naazmat Chakladar read to herself from the file folder at her podium on the dais. A dark-skinned woman of short stature, she was dressed in the robes of the presiding chancellor in the Triad room as the accused was brought in, along with the Seeker, the Archon, and the neutral party. "Triad now begins!" she called the court to order in a ringing voice. "The case is People vs. Eri Loire; the charge is felony assault on an agent of the Langaran Defense Agency."

Then Naazmat turned her eyes to Erin Ari Loire, whose name Ylanne butchered previously and is assumed to have been rectified. "How does the defendant answer to the charges?"
