Description

Oren is a chimera of human, deer, crow, and frog. He was created to be the servant of a mysterious Mistress who lives on a cliff by the sea. Oren appears to be well-cared for and polite, but he can be naive and often gets himself into trouble because of this. He subsists on nothing but small animals, wine, and baked goods.

So begins...

Oren's Story

In walked the strangest little creature, humanoid in shape and design, but black feathers glistened at his elbows and his neck, a pair of large, but graceful antlers sprouting from a mop of orange hair. Oren’s feet were dainty and hooved, his tail like that of a ravens. He regarded the bar with tired-looking eyes before settling down at the bar. He lifted a finger and summoned a barbot.
“I don’t think you have this on the menu...but I would much like a jar of fairies...yes, yes. The little winged...things.” His voice was a croak, like he hadn’t spoken English in years.
“And some wine...”

Oren grinned something a hint devious as the jar of pink and blue and green little people was set before him, as well as a glass of deep-red wine. He rummaged through the pocket of his hooded shirt and placed some credits on the bar. “Much obliged, mister robot...”
He took a sip of the wine and glanced into the jar, lifting it up before shaking it ferociously. The fairies inside shrieked, a dozen tiny voices that sounded like a cicada’s cry, as they collided with each other and the walls of their prison, bashing around until they were all reasonably stunned before Oren unscrewed the lid and picked a pink one up, the creature barely bigger than his pinkie finger.
He screwed the lid back on, re-trapping her comrades as he held the doomed fairy by the wings. “Buggie buggie~” He chittered as the fairy came to and squirmed, trying to flutter away.

Oren entered the silent bar, the faintly-glowing jar of fairies he’d purchased the night before tucked under his arm as he made his way to the end of the counter and set the jar before him, pondering the fatigued, stressed little creatures inside before ordering a stick of sugar and a glass of water.
“Don’t try to fly away now or we’ll have problems,” he muttered as he screwed the lid and set the stick inside and let droplets from his water moistened fingers spatter against the glass wall and drip down. That should keep them content for the time being.
The miniscule-winged creatures ate and drank, but it still felt like a prison from their standpoint. A prison where every once in a while one of their comrades would be pulled out...and never return.

Oren tapped the holomenu in front of him and sent it down. “If you’re impatient, order from the menu and robots will bring what you want out instead. How neat is that?” Oren was easily impressed.
Yoo’s acknowledgement brought the curiosity in Oren out and the chimera pushed back from the bar, taking his jar of traumatized little fairies with him. His lower-half appeared to be faun-like, with fur and feathers melding together to form a bird tail but deer legs, digitigrade and ending in a dainty white cloven hoof. “What are you called?” he asked, not ‘who are you?’ because Oren could sense property when he saw it.

Oren twisted the second fairy about before lapping his tongue out and slathering the insect-human’s wings with a healthy amount of saliva, weighing them down so they couldn’t buzz anymore. The sound was getting a touch irritating anyway.

Of course you’re supposed to lick your friends, it’s common courtesy. You’re also TOTALLY supposed to pop said friend in your mouth and hold them there, wings hanging from your lips. Oren washed his tongue about the doomed little creature before making it disappear down his throat as a shivering little lump with a single gulp, his dour eyes half-lidded.
Best friends.

Oren sat down after that, setting the jar of the remaining fairies in front of him. “Naughty You is naughty. But I’m sure your Master isn’t so cruel as to let his servant starve. You have to eat...” he pat his stomach, faintly aware of the fairy panicking inside. Silly little insect~
Oren had the feeling that Yoo’s master wasn’t exactly sleeping..
He did not raise a hand to beat Yoo either. It simply was not his place.

Oren would never eat his friends (>_>)...but fairies weren’t friends. Hell, they were only half-sentient as far as he was concerned. How was what he did any different from the plethora of insectivores out there? He licked his lips again and finished the wine he’d brought over, the red liquid dribbling down his chin. “Erhhm...excuse me.”
He watched Yoo apologize and held up his hand. “Hey, you did what you have to do. How could anybody be mad?” He tilted his head at the man. “What are you hiding there?” He asked, eyes falling on the pocket that Yoo kept covering with his hand. “Is it a kitten?”
Yes. Of course it’s a kitten. You win, Oren. Fuckin’ idiot.

“Maus...” The chimera grinned at the tiny creature. He wouldn’t mention to Yoo that in addition to fairies, Mistress would feed him mice too, because the woman seemed to get a strange kick out of it. Just any small creature was on the menu for Oren, but two fairies seemed to be tiding him over for now. Plus it would be uncouth to eat your company’s friends. Very.
“Maus is cute,” he chuckled, offering a blood-red finger for the small mammal to sniff at.

“I do like Maus,” Oren responded and blinked at You’s strange position, wondering how he could bear to stand like that? “You can sit...” he started hesitantly. “Really.” He confirmed, gesturing to across the table from himself. He blinked as the bandit coming over and sniffed the air, shifting away just a tad. “Hmmm..”

The chimera offered a nimble-looking hand to Swibkim, sleep-deprived looking eyes studying the bandit curiously before he retracted his hand again. Did this man shake hands without cleaning them first? That was...kind of gross.
“I’m Oren Gigfran. I’m just a wanderer...well, a servant left to wander around. Apparently you can buy fairies here, so here I am.” He gestured to his jar full of the creatures. “It’s convenient.”

“If You wants ya to sit, then it’s fine with me.” Oren shrugged, ordering a second glass of wine from the holo-menu. He watched Yoo and the mouse, hmm cute. Just like Mistress and the little white mice she bought to feed him with. She liked letting them run across her fingers, up and down her arm, even in a little wheel in a tank in her bedroom. Oh, Oren was a spoiled little thing, his head in his Mistress’ lap, bright orange hair being stroked as she casually fed him 2-dollar shop mice like grapes from the vine.
But enough about that.
“Oh.” He cleared up the confusion. “This man’s name is You. Yeah...it’s kind of confusing, but he speaks in the third person, so it isn’t that bad if you think it over.”

“Oh it’s a holo menu!” Oren perked up and showed the pictures of food all over the damn thing. “You pick what you want to eat and then hit this button down here...er...I’ll order you some water.” He nodded and selected (1)water and pressed the big green send button. “And one of the robots will bring you what you picked on here.”
The glass of wine and water arrived fairly quickly and Oren took his drink, sipping the dark-red substance without a wrinkle of the nose. That was his diet...small animals and copious amounts of wine. He was a well-cared for little critter.

The chimera critter handed the jar as well as a few credits to the barbot and waited, tapping his fingers onto the countertop, making note of the vandalism caused before by the one bandit that had been in here earlier. He reached up with the other hand and scratched at the velvet that grew around the base of his antlers, as orange-red as the next thing.

Oren appeared in the bar, stepping through the door, his refilled jar of fairies in tow. Making note that the amount of people in the bar had dwindled greatly since the last time he made his appearance, he figured it was time to let loose. Stretch a little. Black feathered wings slipped out of the slits cut into his hooded shirt, budding out from his shoulderblades and down his back some. He stretched the appendages, his wingspan a healthy 4 meters in all. Needless to say he stayed out of the way while he stretched before proceeding to preen, practically hiding himself underneath his own wings like a cocoon.
“Hmmmf.”

Oren continued to preen, not giving half a fuck to the world outside his wings, his jar of fairies glowing like a nightlight through the gaps between his feathers. The chimera plucked out old feathers, causing a healthy bit of down to build up on the floor beneath him. Have to look in tiptop shape for Mistress...it’s the least he can do in gratitude for her letting him wander around like this.
As an afterthought, he put down another set of credits. “Wine, a full bottle, I don’t care.”

Oren didn’t need to make an entrance because he was already here. The chimera sat on his duff in a chair, with some metal instrument that upon further inspection looked like a tiny spoon, digging mud and grime out from underneath and between his toed hooves. Classy...but it’s not like Gambits was a five-star establishment anyway.
His jar of fairies sat on the table beside him, glowing weakly. He glanced at the critters and grunted. “Guess I better feed you...” Glancing up from his grooming project, he popped an order in for another sugar stick and water. He only had enough money for fairy food...he’d have to ask Mistress for more.

Oren perked at the new patron’s entry, the uniform making it obvious he was some form of military. Not that Oren had any idea what he’d be doing in a bar, but the same could be asked of everything that came through those doors. His Mistress tended to stay aloof from the rest of the goings on in the city, up on her cliffside home, almost cut off from the rest of civilization. Hell, the only reason Oren could even get to the city was because he could fly, although his wings were tucked away for the time being.
The reports didn’t matter much to him, other than they appeared to be causing the Captain duress.

Anybody who would go into Gambits bar would have to pass and greet the chimera sitting in front of the building, eyes closed, great black wings spread to soak up the sun like a comorant would. It was the first sunny day in a week, and like hell he wasn’t about to take that advantage. That and he was trying to remember what Mistress had sent him back into town for...some ingredient for a potion she was whipping up. Something that you couldn’t just BUY in a store or else she wouldn’t have told him to go to Gambits to collect it....Something tooth...or claw....powdered...werewolf tooth. Right? She had said ‘w’ something.
Ugh why didn’t she like to use cell phones.
Oren ruffled his hair with his fingers as he basked in the light. Werewolf tooth...

Oren shuffled into the bar once he was warmed up enough and laid the credits on the bar counter. “Give me...” he trailed off. “Your cheapest bottle of blackberry wine. And I do mean the bottle.”
He settled onto a stool and looked at the mysteriously empty establishment, raising an eyebrow. My god, where could they all be?
Did Gambits EAT them?
