The bustling sounds of an alive city are comforting; when you've lived in metropolis for long enough, silence is a thing of the past that you strain to remember when you think of it on rare occasion. At least fifty things were happening simultaneously: Cars let out exhaust fumes, polluting the air; men wearing loose-fitting casual wear smoked cheap cigarettes as they leaned against the dirtied, artful walls that defined the boundaries of the maze they all lived in; electronic billboards sent out tantalizing messages about greasy fast food, sex toys, and junk medicines you would never need in your lifetime. Various shops and restaurants of all sort littered the street corners. Litter littered the streets themselves.

Seth took this all in without much a thought concerning it, as he did every time he walked on the broken sidewalks. He was walking with a brisk pace that was also somehow casual at the same time -- he had mastered how to do that. It took him all of fifteen minutes since he left his one-bedroom apartment in the ghetto to reach his destination -- a broken-down hospital. He walked inside, signed in at the front desk, and navigated the narrow hallways until he reached room 146. Silently he entered the room, which had one occupant: an old black woman, wrinkles possessing her worned face, IV needles protruding from a dozen places. She raised her head slightly as she saw him enter. She coughed a bit, and then said, with a tremor in her voice, "The trees...they're coming".
