The Shade returned at once, one hand reaching out for Lumierre's shoulder to steal her attention. Their other hand held a single, delicate, red and thornless rose. The Shade's head tilted, almost thoughtfully.

The hand slipped as the Shade drew closer, perhaps to an almost intimate proximity, fingers pressed to Lumierre's chin to tilt it upwards and head leaning forward. While they could not be seen, soft lips were there, guided for hers to impart a gentle kiss.

The Shade sensed Lumierre's understanding and broke the kiss early. There was almost pain in their eyes. The Shade had no control of the messages they imparted to the forest and to herself. Couldn't she see that she lifted its spirits? A yearning came from deep within their body, and at the same time the ground seemed to ache and groan.

As his thoughts seeped into her mind, she emitted a soft gasp, staring up into his eyes as they continued to gaze down at her. The thought was profound, almost beyond her understanding.

How could nature itself be in love with her? And even as she thought that, she couldn't force herself to reject the idea. She loved him too, after all, she just couldn't fathom being in love with him. Confusion played across her features, and she whispered, out loud, "How is this possible?"

The Shade turned their head away guiltily, but there was a mourning amongst the trees. A sadness that came with thoughts of missing those they once knew. Elves were not here often, and those that were seemed to rarely visit. Humans were not people of the forest and those they had encountered did not understand the Shade, only thought them a bane for bringing bad weather. The Shade was, well, lonely. Few who truly understood them came to these woods.

There was an implication hanging heavy in the leaves above, a wish that she would stay with the Shade forever, but at the same time acceptance that it was not to be. Their head tilted, a grateful gesture. Next came, with head raised once more, a thought of welcomeness, to share her troubles and feel comfort with them.

Finally, they reached for her hand to guide it to where their own heart would be, but instead of a rhythmic thump, it was almost as if life itself could be felt moving beneath their skin.

A nod. They knew. They understood. And they would wait. Nature, if nothing else, was patient.

And everything was, but there seemed to be some silent talk amongst the gargoyles. There was a stirring in the ground.

What rose was of no surprise to those who knew it was coming, that was, the gargoyles. There was no dramatic hand bursting from the earth, it merely parted to allow the Shade to sit up, clutching one hand to their previous bullet wound. Their red eyes locked onto Lumierre as the last of the dirt tumbled away.

Almost non-chalantly, they pulled themself up out of their grave and to their feet.

And then they hugged the elf.

Ear pressed to ear, there was a whispering from his mind to hers. Nature could not be killed by a bullet, and thus neither could he. The implication was clear. Whether it had been some form of paralysis or a deep sleep, the Shade had never died. Even Ezrael could not kill a force of nature itself. From the Shade's fingertips small growths came, vines it seemed, pulling Lumierre close into their loving embrace. The embodiment of nature had returned.

And then there was a pang of guilt.

Tor place a hand on Lumierre's shoulder and the vines receded. "You showed us, Lumierre," said the gargoyle leader, "That the Dark Man of our prophecy was not Ezrael. It was your... Shade. He is the one to lead us to our paradise."

Tor nodded. He couldn't help but agree.

The Shade raised a hand in a stop sign, asking Lumierre to wait. Their fingers came together, white and red growing outwards into a beautiful flower, which was promptly placed in her hair. The Shade kissed her cheek, or at least it felt somewhat like a kiss. It was impossible to tell if the Shade even had a mouth.

They pressed their forehead to Lumierre's and a promise was passed. This would not be the last time they saw each other.

The skies were darkening, clouds gathering despite previously being an otherwise serene day. And with it, the threat of rain. It seemed to be coming from the city, though no such weather was forecast. With it came a gentle downpour, barely a refreshing splash spread out amongst the forest. Everything seemed to come alive. Birds were singing a secret song between themselves, insects buzzed and chirped along and about small mammals ferretted, a general excited hurriedness in their motions as if awaiting an anticipated guest.

A guest was coming indeed, dark of form but innately a creature of nature.

It was like serenity incarnate. He didn't walk, but he drifted, grass and plants suddenly flourishing beneath his footsteps, then dying. He red coils wrapped around his flesh perpetually moved, like snakes in an exotic dance. One arm raised gently gesturing for the tree, and from it grew a new branch, twigs sprouting from the sides and leaves forming a small umbrella shelter for Callista, to shelter her.

He paused, the simple joy of his presence leaping from tree to tree. Animals had gathered, as they always did, to observe him, some stalking in his wake eagerly, others content to watch from afar. Insects lazily drifted around him like he was an exotic bug zapper, but not one landed on his skin or irritated him in any fashion.

As he stepped forward his hands were offered out to be taken by Callista and Lorn, to join in the feeling of nature.

The forest echoed with the sense, not words but feelings that resonated deeply. It culminated to one thought.

Kinship.

Keeping ahold of Lorn's hand he wandered towards Callista, understanding her desire to stay dry. In truth he was the same as they, an elemental, but perhaps more refined. He was the spirit of a million trees in a forest and all the creatures that shared their lives together there. Where there was nature his voice could be heard.

Though, even he was only the humble prophet of nature herself.

There was warmth in his palm, the red coils swaying in the direction of Callista's touch. He tilted his head thoughtfully for a moment before he stepped forward to pull them both into a hug. It was a friendly gesture, and it came with an overwhelming feeling of happiness at their presence, and of the information of others, but it also carried the knowledge that he would be going after this. That this was their last hug of this visit, and he would move on.

Such was his way, but Callista eventually had to be free of her shelter, and he would not constrain her to one place.

To Callista he gave his warmth and to Lorn he gave the fond thought of a stream he had crossed with gentle current and much waterlife, then stepped forth causing life to spring up and wilt beneath his feet, seeking another in the distance to share his blessing.

This time the shade did not move, instead standing still with a great acknowledgement of Gaia's presence. Spring from the ground towards the house were flowering vines, growing into an intricate and artistic shape and forming a straight path to him. There was a rainbow of coloured plants, reds, yellows, whites, purples, even blues! All intermixed with the green of their stems and leaves, making a beautiful trail towards the source of the storm.

He caught her, swinging around in a circle holding Gaia close to him. The trees did seem to sing, their kinship much greater than others. For once in his life, he closed his eyes to enjoy the moment of peace and belonging. To the rest of the world there was only silence, but they could feel a deeper sensation than others. He slowly lowered her to the ground, tilting his head with fondness before aiming a questioning gesture to her house.

He knew of the others, but he wanted to know if she wanted to share him just yet, or hold off for a little while

As she took his hand he deftly stepped around her, raising his arm to help her into a twirl, like a graceful dancer. His spirit was playful and jovial, and he only seemed more fond of her desire to share him. Nature was not meant for one, but for all, afterall.

He cocked his head, but immediately understood, reaching down to pick her up once more, but this time safely rest her on his shoulders. As they grew closer to the house, the vines withered behind them, curling up as if they had never been there to begin with, but the scent of fresh dew on flowers drifted through the air.

He offered a hand, in what seemed to be a shake, but in reality he desired to know what her spirit was. Wind was a hard element to appeal to without high places or strong weather, a weather he didn't wish to impose on their lovely home. Instead, sprouting from his free hand a small whirl of wind grew, dancing around and picking up motes of dust to carry them in a pleasant, lazy swirl.
