Wisp

An 'investigator'. Skilled 'hacker', in layman's terms, utilising illegal methods to investigate targets for interesting cases.

Description

©Guy Kremer
Full Name: Lisa Kessler
Internet/General Alias: Wisp
Age: 23
Race: Human
Significant Relations: None.

Height: 5' 5"
Weight: 123 lbs
Hair Colour: Blonde
Eye Colour: Blue
Physical Description: When you think of a hacker, you generally picture a nerdy, spotty, glasses-wearing introvert sitting at a computer surrounded by old food and pizza boxes. Two of these things are true about Lisa, and that's that she never clears away her trash, and that she dislikes the company of other humans; physically she looks more the part of a biker than a computer whizz. With carefully styled (though not every day), skilfully dyed medium length blonde hair, a slim figure and a sense of fashion, Lisa passes as an ordinary member of society, and attracts her fair share of interested men. That she systematically rejects, of course.

Personality: An introvert and generally apathetic individual, Lisa is capable of social interaction but prefers not to do it on a grand scale. Being introverted does not mean she hates company, but it does mean that she is just as happy on her own, and does hate the company of a lot of people at once. Independent, feminist, vengeful and snappy.

Skills and Talents:
  • Practised in the use of small firearms.
  • Capable driver, most significantly on a bike.
  • Capable hand to hand fighter.
  • Impressive reflexes.
  • Impossibly skilled hacker and general tech expert.

Equipment:
  • Two 9mm pistols
  • Taser
  • Lockpicks
  • 'Skeleton Key' - kept on a USB memory stick, this programme, coded by Lisa, is capable of breaking into almost any security system and giving her total control of a computer.
  • MacBook
  • Windows running Laptop (she doesn't carry both at the same time, obviously)
  • iPhone 3GS (enhanced to be able to tap into secure networks, track bugs, listen into radio transmissions, tap phonecalls and a variety of other functions)
  • iPad
  • Tracker bugs.
  • A debit card connecting to a suspiciously full bank account. She didn't steal it. Honest...

So begins...

"No. This is all real. You have walked in on something that you cannot understand without accepting that everything you believe impossible is probably possible somewhere. My name is Lisa, I am not a film director." Lisa spoke simply and practically. "Everything here can probably kill you in some manner. To survive, if you intend to remain, you must accept this and remain calm despite it."

"I told you. Arriving here is random. Some sort of random event in spacetime. Unless you intend to get here, in which case there are methods. You arrived due to a random event. You can leave via intent. But now you are here, you will arrive here again, random events will focus around you. Or at least, that is one way these things can happen."

With her laptop away, Lisa was forced to put her full attention into interaction. She did not enjoy doing so, but it seemed that she must.

"You can leave, but at any time, you may randomly find yourself back here. Inevitably, you will have to acclimatise and learn to survive here, even for brief periods." Lisa said, tapping her fingers on the table. "You will do so by experience and by example. Leaving is a relatively simple prospect, once you arrive you must remain for a period of time after which the random event field will reset. That time period is random. Everything, is random. It could be instantaneous or it could be several hours. Once it resets, you may leave via the door. Before then, you will emerge into Wing City. You can contact an organisation such as the Wing City Police to learn how to manually calibrate the exit portals, but that takes time and effort."

Wisp observed Mei's hand for a moment before taking it, shaking briskly before retracting her hand. "You can get out. It's hours, not years. As long as you don't die before the event field resets then you are fine. When you can contact a friendly party such as the local Police, the SCD from America, or a similar organisation or even individual, you will be able to control it yourself after enough time."

Lisa nodded. "Mei. You can survive this with relative ease. When I first arrived here it was uninentional also, but since then I have learned to take advantage of the superior facilities, availability of magic, and superior technology here when I choose to. You can do the same, most likely, or you can become able to never return."

"You adjust. My line of work, it is favourable to be somewhere very hard to be traced. That's all you need to know." Lisa said simply. "And there are good points to the place. You meet creatures from fantasy. The impossible is possible. Magic, tehnology, things such as that. It's a choice, between security and possibility."

"Maybe." Lisa said simply. "Definitely, in fact. It's whether you're doing it voluntarily or not that's the maybe." Lisa shrugged. The blonde girl tapped her fingers on the table, looking down at the wood. She didn't continue speaking, seeing nothing more to say at that moment in time.

"The Netherlands." Lisa replied, "I am Dutch by birth, but I moved to America when I was seventeen. I first came here a year ago, and I live here now."

Lisa looked up at Mei. "And you?"

"It was for a time." Lisa said, "I would have remained, but circumstances did not permit." She glanced down as her phone vibrated, and she took it out of her jacket pocket -- allowing Mei a glimpse at the pistol and taser concealed within -- to look at the email she had received.

W.

M @ WCP. CC. On H, now.

S.

Lisa looked up from the phone at Mei. "I have to go. You should be able to leave soon, it's been a while since you arrived. The event will probably have reset, or will do so soon." she stood, sliding the phone away. "See you again, maybe."

"Good luck." Lisa nodded to the girl before turning and leaving the bar.

"How nice..."

Wisp breezed past Drench as he spoke, having entered just as the odd person started shouting. She barely gave him more than a single glance as she moved past him, making her way toward a spare table at the side of the room.

An empty bar. Convenient. Nobody present but the bartender, half asleep on his stool behind the counter. Wisp entered the establishment quietly so as not to wake him, preferring the silence and solitude.

The blonde girl made her way over to a table, and sat, taking out a laptop and switching it on. Leaving it, and her bag at the table, she walked over to the bar and around it. The bartender remained asleep as she drew herself a coffee out into a mug, and took a muffin from a display case. Just as she was circling around back to the table she had sat at, she noticed Buttons in the booth, and observed Autumn descending the stairs.

So much for solitude. Wisp mentally shrugged as she walked back to her table and sat.

Wisp looked up from her laptop at Buttons' wandering, lifting an eyebrow. He didn't seem to have any particular aim in mind. Which of course meant that he probably had motives that he wanted to conceal. People seldom genuinely wandered around aimlessly. Normally there was a disguised aim.

Wisp continued to watch Buttons with cold, penetrating blue eyes, though she did not speak in reply to him.

Wisp's eyes slid over to the new entrance, Assassin. Wary of anyone who felt the need to wear a mask, the blonde girl made a mental note to keep a tab on the stranger's actions, before turning back to her computer and bringing up her email.

Wisp sent off several messages (encrypted, of course) to various contacts, before opening up Cognitive.iwx. It was a program she had coded herself, that she could install upon other computers remotely. Essentially, it allowed her to have free reign of the computer in question, copying all of the files and programs to a mirror hosted in Holland, and inserting a startup prompt to display Cognitive rather than the user's actual computer. This meant that everything the owner did, Wisp could see.

She downloaded a couple of files from the Wing City Police Commander's computer, before closing the program down. Wisp took a sip of her coffee, and a bite of her muffin, looking back up at the patrons for a few moments.

Lisa Kessler pushed open the door of the bar and walked inside without so much as a glance up from her phone to ensure she didn't walk into somebody. Her iPhone was displaying an unusual app, which upon a glance seemed to be some sort of maps application, but on closer inspection could be seen to display several extra labels for the marked locations, including what appeared to be domain and computer names, as well as cameras.

That aside, Lisa made her way through the only lightly occupied bar and up to the counter, where she looked up long enough to attract the attention of a bartender.

She ordered a black coffee and a muffin, and paid in cash. With her order in hand, the blonde girl made her way to a table at the side of the room and took out her laptop. While it loaded, she took a sip of her coffee, and surveyed the bar. Nothing particularly out of the ordinary. Nobody appeared too intrusive. Good.

Lisa noted the new entrance to the bar with idle disinterest. By this point her MacBook had booted, and she inserted in the 3G mobile broadband connection to the USB port. It took a few seconds for the computer to connect, after which Lisa opened her email and opened a new message.

To:
From:

I heard everything. I know who he is.

W.

Lisa encrypted the message, and sent it. That was one item off of her to do list. Now, about that little matter with the law ...

Hacking into the mainframe of the LAPD was no easy feat, but Lisa didn't need to do that. Approximately two months ago she had, instead, hacked into the home computer of the LAPD Police Chief. From there, installing Cognitive had been a simple task, and from that she had easily tracked his keystrokes to identify his password onto the LAPD secure network.

It was via the Chief's computer that Lisa logged onto the network now, using Cognitive to remotely operate his PC. She entered a log for one suspect identifying herself only as 'Wisp' having been apprehended forty eight hours ago, before sending off an email from the Chief's account to that of Katy Lockhart of the WCPD reporting this.

That would keep the local force off of her for a few days or so while they straightened that out. More time to finish up her business and drop off of the radar.

After a few minutes of relaxing with her coffee, a pop-up on Lisa's desktop announced the arrival of an email. She leant forwards and clicked on it, opening the message.

From:
To:

And? Can you send me a report of some nature?

Kynala.

Wisp raised an eyebrow momentarily before typing out her response, replying with a simple sentence.
Need more time.

She sent the message and once more leant back, pondering her next move.

The look that Lisa gave Tamika could only be described as incredulous. The staring frown on her face suggested that not only was this the most ridiculous request that the girl had ever heard, but that she fully expected it to be followed by an exclamation of "Just kidding!"

When this did not come, the frown deepened.

"No." Lisa responded simply. Let a strange woman plug something into her laptop? Not half likely.

Lisa raised an eyebrow. She was intrigued now - intrigued as to the reason why this woman was willing to pay so much for the usage of her laptop.

Not intrigued enough to agree, though. "No." she repeated.

She had plenty of money - access to billions. Some billionaires were just plain stupid about their bank account details.
