PERSONALITY
♦ Witty ♦ Outgoing ♦ Loyal ♦ Competitive ♦ Intelligent ♦ Blunt ♦

If one was to ask about Jacobi's loyalty and where it lies then within their friendship, most will tell you that he is the most loyal person that you will ever meet and that is a true factoid. Jacobi's loyalty can be seen as being a bit overprotective, at times as well and he doesn't let no one hurt his friends because if they do then it will not end well for them. Jacobi is loyal to the members of his house first before anybody else. If someone does anything to any one of the members in his house then he'd probably make them regret whatever they did. Along with being loyal, Jacobi is very honest when it comes to his friends and members of his house. Jacobi has an open mind when it comes saying things out loud. Of course, he will speak his mind on almost any subject at hand but will try to be mindful of the words that comes from his lips. Jacobi hates it when he has to be blunt though. If his friends asks for his brutally honest opinion, he will definitely be the one to give them what they want. Jacobi really doesn't hold his tongue when it comes to anybody, a trait that he kind of picked up from his mother since he was around her for most of his life. If Jacobi was to hurt one with the words that he spoke, of course he will apologize to them and hope that they will accept his apology. If not, Jacobi will understand completely.

Jacobi is very competitive whenever it comes to certain matters. One of them being Quidditch, which is probably at the top of the list. He has a competitive when it comes to about anything, really, whether it be Quidditch, finishing his work first or becoming the fastest at Potion Making without making a mistake. He will keep the competition in a friendly manner though and will try his best not to be too vicious except for when it comes to Quidditch then he cannot help but to be because he wants to win and not lost, for his team, of course. Though he is competitive, is also intelligent when it comes to his tactics in competition but that's not the only thing he is intelligent in. Jacobi has a load of common sense and if you engage in a conversation with him, it will definitely be intellectual and meaningful towards the subject matter at hand, whether than trailing off to something else. If one was to talk to Jacobi about something that he likes or loves, he'll become very excited and will talk for nearly hours on that one subject until he has touch the basis of it. Most people rarely talks to him because of that fact but if one has similar interests with him, then might be the only reason that they will talk to them.

Jacobi is also known for his inventive and quick witted comebacks towards other people in an argument or debate. Though, if the argument is very petty then it is not worth his time and instead of giving comebacks, he'll simply walk away since cannot stand it when someone comes up to him with mess or drama. Jacobi has been known for being a drama free kid and tends to stay that way during his time at Orion. If one was to ask if Jacobi was adventurous then they will tell that he is. Jacobi is willing to try at least anything once and if he likes it then he will definitely try it again. Jacobi is very outgoing as he will walk up to anybody and start talking to them. If he likes what they say, he'll continue talking to them but if he doesn't, he'll cut the conversation short and walk away. He is also friendly to those around him and will also befriend anybody but of course, they have to be intelligent and be very interested in some of things that he is interested in. That's just the way Jacobi is and he cannot help that.

Overall, Jacobi is a great person to become friends with even if it just for a few moments. He loves having people around him that he can talk to about almost anything and loves almost everyone in his house. Once you befriend Jacobi, one better ready for a very loyal friend, intelligent and meaningful conversations, along with quick witted comebacks that will leave you astounded. Jacobi welcomes anyone to try to be his friend and given by his actions, you'll know if you passed the test or not.

HISTORY
Jacobi was born seventeen years ago on a small island in Hawaii to two wonderful parents, or so he thought. When he was born, his mother knew that he was going to be just like her, in more ways that one. As Jacobi turned three years of age, that was when he discovered that he was a wizard and his mother was happy that one of her children were finally like her. His father was very unappreciative of his son being a wizard, or a freak like his mother. Him and his father wasn't really close after learning that he was a wizard so he kept close to his mother instead. Jacobi's mother, Marie often trained Jacobi how to hone his abilities and keep them under control. His mother took him out of regular school and taught her himself but it was mostly about magical and mystical things than anything else. Jacobi's mother basically told him that he didn't need that other crap in order to succeed where he was going. Of course, Jacobi was slightly confused given that he was so young at the time. But growing up, he finally learned much more about him that everyone else overlooks. Him and his brother slowly started to get along after Jacobi had beat him in one of their fights. Once he proved himself, his brother became practically his best friend.

When Jacobi had turned eleven, it wasn't even two days later when he received his acceptance letter to Orion. His father found it and burned it right before his mother eyes, proclaiming that his son is not going there. Of course, that hurt Jacobi more than anything but the next day, another letter came, which his mother found and showed him secretly as he read it with excitement then gave his mother a hug. His father walked in shortly afterwards, seeing yet another letter as he looked towards his mother then at him and wanted them out of his house. Jacobi didn't really care because he was going to Orion but felt sorry for his mother because she literally had nowhere else to go. As he went to Orion, of course he was nervous but his mother quickly shook those nerves from him and made him a lot less nervous. When he was leaving for Orion, oddly, his father and older brother was there and even hugged him goodbye.

Being at Orion has taught Jacobi things that he didn't even know about himself, magically. He loves being there and enjoys the friends that he has made. Jacobi isn't really fond of being away from home but he makes the best of it because of his friends. Every time he could, he wrote his mother every single chance he had but now, doesn't do so that often because he is growing up and becoming a mature, young man. Jacobi has improved on his skills as a wizard through his time at Orion and hopes to learn new and exciting ways in order to become a wizard master.

Date: 1st September | Time: 6.00 pm | Location: Island Cove - Great Hall

Light ripples across the blue waters of the island’s cove, setting the waves aflame as the swells of water race towards the golden sands of the beach beyond. Half of the beach remains untouched, pristine stretches of sand racing down to meet the lapping salty waters. To the left, however, several small jetties have been constructed, floating on the waves and offering a safe docking space for the collection of magical ships arriving. The dock is only temporary, conjured up by staff for the arrival of the school’s students. Once the last has arrived the beach will be returned to its previous state, the swish of a wand deconstructing the floating pier in the blink of an eye.

For any muggles who catch sight of the yearly migration of ships, they might wonder where the sea faring vessels are going. The island is invisible to muggle eyes and technologies, blanketed by powerful spells that render it unmappable and undetectable. Yet, for those with magical blood running in their veins, they know exactly where the boats go and why. Above the beach, perched on the edge of the overhanging cliff, stands Orion Institute of Magic, a school dedicated to the education of young witches and wizards from around the globe. The castle gleams in the setting sun, appearing to sparkle as if its walls are littered with diamonds and crystals. The school’s flag flies from the Western tower, flapping in the sea breeze and proudly displayed the school’s crest – the Southern Cross constellation enclosed in a silver circle of vines with a pair of crossed wands beneath from which the words “To Learn Is the Highest Power” appear to be produced.

For the new students on the arriving boats, this is their first glimpse at their home for the next year, and an impression that will live on long after they have left the school. Awed gasps can be heard from some of those younger students, while the older students look on with smug expressions, their eyes already leaving the stunning castle above to scan the clear waters below. There, a dark smudge beneath the waves can be seen, flying through the water’s depths. There’s movement to the starboard side, barely caught by any who aren’t paying particular attention – just the flick of a tail and then calm again. A second later a shriek is heard from the front of the boat, small hands of the frightened first years pointing at the water monster emerging from the depths.

Long enough to wrap around the ship multiple times, the beast shares many similarities with dragons. Its skin is covered in glistening, dark multi-coloured scales, which seem to change shades as it swims from patches of sunlight to shadows cast by clouds high above. Above water the light also reveals the beautiful patterns engraved onto the beast’s scales. Sharp claws extend from its fore- and hind-legs, as long as many of the first years gapping in fear and astonishment on board the vessels are tall. Large, intelligent eyes blink up at the boat, its mouth opening to reveal rows of deadly teeth as it belches out a shriek. Spines stand to attention along its back, following the movement of its body as it slides through the water towards the boat. Just before the beast reaches the ship it picks up speed, causing more than a few of the new students to stumble backwards in fear as if it were about to smash into the ship's side. Then, to a series of gasps and startled shouts, it leaps from the waters, arching itself up and above the boat, the length of its body curving over the deck, before splashing back beneath the waves on the other side. From there it disappears down, a series of loud cheers and clapping erupting from the older students for its show.

On board the boats the knees of the first years shake, their eyes wide as they attempt to come to terms with what they’ve just seen.

“It’s a dragon… a- a-… a water dragon.” One mutters in bewilderment, no doubt questioning why a school would keep such a beast so close.

“No, it’s a Taniwha.” Another replies, possibly a resident of the neighbouring Island chain of New Zealand, from where the magical monsters originate.

The returning students grin on, confident in their knowledge that the cove’s Taniwha acts as guardian and protector of the school, and perhaps remembering their own first sighting of the beast. Many believe that the Taniwha’s appearance at the start of every year is his idea of a joke, a playful way to welcome the new students to Orion. For the rest of the year he – fondly nicknamed Moe because his full name is hard for many to pronounce – remains largely out of sight, apart from the odd glimpse of a tail or leg slipping beneath the waters.

Needless to say, once the shock wears off the new students and an older student has explained the situation, there’s no stopping the excited chatter. Yet, there is much more to see, and before long the students have left the boats. Carriages pulled by invisible steeds carry students up the winding path to the castle, while the first years are treated to flying hippogriff pulled carriages which zoom around the golden castle at an astonishing pace.

Image

Just as the sun finally sets, the first years are set down and ushered into the grand hall. There wonder again sets in and necks crane up to inspect the charmed ceiling above. At first glance one might simply assume that the night sky outside has been reflected in the high ceiling of the hall, yet a second glance will show you there’s much, much more to behold, for the ceiling is alive with moving constellations. The crab of cancer scuttles behind the harp constellation of Lyra just as the dragon which gives house Draconis its name glides by. A school of sparkling stars in the shape of fish glimmer in and out of view as they pass swim around the figure of Hercules. Most stars can be seen in the ceiling at at least one time in the year as the ceiling seems to shift hemispheres on a whim. However, of all the constellations, only one is notably absent, both in the ceiling above and in the night sky, Orion the Hunter.

Yet, none of the students can be faulted for not reflecting on the constellation's absence at this moment. For, of equal interest to many is the large array of food spread across the four house tables, waiting to be devoured by the hungry witches and wizards. The feast is always a highlight, and every year the kitchen elves go to great lengths to provide a truly remarkable meal. Everything from roasted vegetables, chicken drumsticks, and mouth-watering burgers to creamy puff pastries, raspberries cakes, and lemon tarts stand ready on the tables. The only thing keeping the students from reaching out and starting their meal is the watchful eye of the school’s headmistress and her accompanying teachers. They sit at the head of the hall, patiently waiting for the first years to file in so that they may be sorted. Only then will a short welcoming speech be given before permission to eat is granted.

The sorting, thankfully, does not take an extraneous amount of time. An old hat is brought out, baring a striking resemblance to the sorting hat used by Hogwarts School. And in fact Orion’s was modelled on Hogwarts’ sorting hat many years ago. However, since its creation the hat has picked up several habits, such as dropping the occasional swear word into its yearly song and insisting on being addressed as ‘Daisy’. No amount of magic or persuading can get it to stop swearing, and the students have come to be fond of this little quirk. Daisy usually receives a raucous applause after any song particularly heavy in unsavoury language. Applause too is given as the new students are sorted into one of the four houses, older students clapping them on the backs and cheering as they move to join their tables. Then, after ‘Robert Zueqo’ is sorted into Draconis, the hat is removed and Headmistress Syborn stands.

A hush descends on the hall as the witch gazes out, her smile warm as she addresses the pupils, “To our newest arrivals, welcome to Orion, and to our returning students, welcome back.” Her voice carries across the hall, while her eyes dance from face to face. “I can see that many of you are already eyeing the lemon tarts, and I will not be the reason to prolong your wait.” A cheer goes up from some of the students, the hungriest no doubt, and Headmistress Sybron waits patiently for the noise to die down before she continues, “However, I would first like to remind all students and inform our new pupils, that unsupervised magic is prohibited, while the forest and beach are out of bounds unless accompanied by a teacher. Professor Savea informs me that the island’s local unicorn herd has several new additions and asks that anyone who happens to come across them, to please be respectful and give the young foals space.” Syborn pauses, her eyes gazing around at individual faces as she lets her message sink in, when she is sure that it had she smiles and raises her hands, “Alright, you may begin.”

That announcement receives a loud cheer, one that becomes progressively quieter as the students pounce on the food. And this is where we start out story, sitting among friends and filling out bellies.

THOMPSON
"I am vain."
The boat ride towards the institute was just as soothing, as he remembered. Jacobi closed his eyes and leaned back against a rail where he was sitting, reminiscing about when he was a first year taking this same boat ride. Honestly, he was terrified but then just imagined as if it was the waters off of the Hawaiian coast then that made the ride smooth sailing from then on. He opened his eyes with a slight smile dancing across his facial features as he looked and saw a girl staring at him. He offered her a small wave, which she returned with a soft chuckle towards her friends and now they were probably talking about him, along with his cuteness and whatever else.

With the shake of his head, Jacobi diverted his attention elsewhere and that was when his ears twitched at the Taniwha's shriek. He turned around and leaned forward against the railing now, clasping his hands against it, as well. Jacobi smiled at the creature below then turned as most of the first years seemed slightly afraid due to the other years torment towards them. Again, he shook his head and sat back down, seeing the institute up ahead and honestly gleamed with excitement. He was more than excited to be returning to the great halls of Orion but was sort of saddened at the same time, considering it was his last year at the institute. A sigh escaped over his parted lips at the thought as they made their way inside of the institute.

Jacobi entered the Great Hall and eyed every single table until he found the one that was meant for his house. Upon approaching the table, he saw the first years were escorted in. He looked upon the posse of girls from the boat and gave them a thumbs up. But they all went to a different house, other than his own. Of course, he was not sad since their house seemed to have gotten some good recruits this year. When the Headmistress stands, everything went silent immediately and Jacobi even had to shush some little first years, who were talking. His eyes bared upon her now as her speech wasn't really long this year, which he was thankful for.

Just as she mentioned that they can begin their feast, he raised a brow towards Aidan, who obviously wasted no time to fill his belly. Jacobi simply rolled his eyes at him then reached and grabbed a few items to fill his plate. He welcomed the recent recruited first years to the House of Phoenicis and they all thanked him with smiles and laughs. Though one of them engaged in a full fledged spill about her family, which Jacobi really had no intention of listening to. He nodded his head as if he was giving the first year his full attention then commented afterwards. "Oh, that's nice." That was it. The first year shrugged his shoulders and shut his mouth talking.

Jacobi heard everyone's words about Aidan's eating habits and could do nothing but laugh. "Aidan, are you trying to get stronger this year for Quidditch? If so, I think you may be taking the wrong approach." Jacobi commented then looked at Adeline as she asked about everyone's holidays. "Well, mine were quite enjoyable as always. Nothing like going back home to the beautiful beaches and catching some narly waves." Jacobi responded with a bad surfer impression then lowered his head, a bit embarrassed at the display that had just transpired. He remained quiet and hoped that someone would hurry up and speak as he sat there, his cheeks flushed with embarrassment. When Adeline spoke about showing them some Quidditch moves she learned over the holidays, he wanted to comment but then thinks that had spoke enough for the time being.

XXXTight ringlets frame Emma's soft cheeks, bouncing as she speaks. She is a continuous stream of movement. Her feet tap in time with her speech and she gestures wildly with her arms, nearly flinging the back of her palm into an unsuspecting Third Year's eye.
XXXWatching her calls Aidan's attention to where his own knee bounces beneath the table. An inability to stay still seems to be a Phoenicis trait, as many posses it. Energy blitzes from one end of the Phoenicis table to the other, exuding an eagerness to act.
XXXThe noise is jarring after months of bitter silence. The Zellers rarely speak to one another, unless it is to impart knowledge of a hazardous new spell in progress or the shift in political power in the Ministry of Magic. Even that is rare, for loyalty and generosity are not traits perpetuated by the Wizards and Witches of the Dark Arts. Everyone is guarded and disingenuous, reluctant to share the minor details that could give them the upper hand should the need arise, as it often does.
XXXTheodor Zeller had long accepted his firstborn's deficiency, but that has not stopped him from imparting his dark knowledge on him in the hopes that the power it offered might goad Aidan into veering onto a different path. With only one other child, it seems to Theodor that the only way to continue his lineage is through his muggle-sympathising son or his half-blood daughter.
XXXNeither are ideal, but a daughter whose blood would mar the ancient House of Zeller's 'purity' is even more so. Aidan's return to The Onyx Manor during the Summer holidays has only become more insufferable following his mother's death four years prior.
XXX"The rest of you might want to scoot back a bit though," Mac's voice brushes away the dark clouds coalescing in his head. "Getting between him and those raspberry cakes can be dicey."
XXX"Don't be ridiculous," Aidan responds, turning away from the empty chair to pin Mac with eyes like shattered glass. Lines of silver radiate from dark pupils, bleeding across pale blue irises. “I'm only a danger to newborns. Less chewy."
XXXA familiar figure plops into the vacant seat in his periphery. Aidan shifts his gaze from Mac to Adeline. The slow grin that spreads across his face reveals the dimple in his right cheek. Adie appears exactly as she had when he'd held her, grazing the top of her head with his lips before wishing her a good holiday months ago. It's as if she took a step over the cliff that separated his thoughts from reality and landed right in front of him.
XXXHe'd told her to tell her family he'd said hi. He knows, listening to the strange tales of her muggle family, that his family is wrong. Muggle parents do not keep their children in broom closets under the stairs or feed them experimental muggle drugs that give them supernatural powers akin but inferior to Pure-blood magic. He has heard so much about Adie's family, sometimes it's as if he knows them himself. He supposes a boy can wish.
XXX"They're right, I'm surprised you haven't cleared the whole table yet. Though, if you're still hungry Aidan, mum packed me some delicious vegemite sandwiches. I saved them just for you," Adie says.
XXXAidan blinks slowly, seeming to be stunned for a few long moments. After months of silence - because his family did not condone the use of "unnatural mud-blood contraptions" like Facebook, Skype or God forbid, air conditioning - this is what she has to say to him? Vegemite sandwiches?
XXX"Hey, thanks, man. That's what I meant when I asked for a souvenir. Vegemite sandwiches. My fav." He'd taken to using muggle slang last semester for comedic purposes. Aidan nods sagely and picks up a fork. "You know what else sounds fun? Stabbing myself in the face with this fork." His eyes roll into the back of his eyes. Aidan shakes his head and begins furiously shovelling some raspberry tart into his mouth. He swallows. Shakes his head again. "Hey, Aidan. Long time no see, Aidan. I have been lost without your mesmerising touch to enchant me awake, Aidan," he mumbles under his breath.
XXXAdie asks how everyone's holidays were and Aidan listens, smiling and adding a few wry comments and prodding questions of his own. He doesn't mention how his holidays were, although holiday might be too generous of a word to describe life in the Onyx Manor. Instead he shoves it into the recesses of his mind. Better to pretend it never happened, along with every other time he returned 'home.'
XXXHis ears perk and his face brightens at the mention of Quidditch and winning. Two of his favourite things. Soon another voice chips in to comment on his eating habits. Frankly, Aidan doesn't see the point in merely talking about food. Now if they actually had food.
XXX"Aidan, are you trying to get stronger this year for Quidditch? If so, I think you may be taking the wrong approach," Jacobi says. Aidan raises his head and quirks a brow.
XXX"Lecturing me on Quidditch strategy, Cobi?" Aidan muses. "That reminds me!"
Aidan turns to the members of the Phoenicis Quidditch team around him, eyes gleaming with genuine delight. His dimple deepens.
XXX"6am Quidditch training tomorrow! I spent my holidays dreaming of the many gruelling drills to add to our training regime. The Bodysaw, Prisoner Get Up, Gut Buster. Draconis will never see it coming." Aidan slams a fist onto the table, rattling plates of food and sending a few pieces of cutlery sprawling to the floor. "Man, we're going to have such a great time.
XXX"Wait," he says after a pause, furrowing his brows. "Where's Godric?" They usually come to the welcome back dinner together as they always end up in the same boat. Normally, they would come from the same direction - England - but he'd taken the portkey in Germany this time.

Godric would have been one to appreciate peace and quiet for a change on his arrival to Orion, something he doesn't normally get. Somehow, ever since his first year at the wizarding institute, there is always something that seems to go wrong during his first day, especially when he's in Aidan's company.

As the boat departs and Godric notices Aidan is nowhere to be seen, he starts to get the false idea he'd get a calm ride without too many distractions. Perhaps he could enjoy reading one of his books, even if it was for a brief moment. Unlike every other year they rode together, in which the duo engaged in endless chatter much of which involved Quidditch strategies and new tactics to finally defeat Alfie, it seemed as if this year would be different. Admittedly, he wasn’t one to complain as he enjoys Aidan's company, at least that is when he isn't trying to torture him with his vastly cheesy romantic flicks. Truth be told, the thought alone made the wizard shiver, wondering what new and old movies Aidan had brought with him this year.

Much to Godric’s dismay, his ears resonate with noises coming from every direction; from students inside the boat, to those on the ones nearby. Even the Taniwha made sure to shriek loudly for everyone to hear, especially the first years, before splashing the water with its voluptuous body. The reactions were ever the same and Godric can't possibly be any more indifferent. Not wanting to engage in any kind of interaction with anyone he doesn't know, he pulls out one of the many books he had brought in his enchanted satchel before he pretends to read it profusely. A lie of course, as it was impossible for him to read given the loudness. Still, he hopes others can take a hint and leave him be.

In his rehearsed tactic to ignore others, Godric begins noticing a particular group that was being louder than the rest. Their giggles and failed attempts to discreetly ogle at the older wizard were almost bothersome. One mere glance away from his book and into the giggling source, and Godric was able to find none other than three younger girls whispering into each other, unknowing that Godric has an almost superhuman hearing as they coyly stare into his direction.

"Isn't that Phoenicis keeper?" Asked one the girl on the left to which her neighbor responds with a nod.

"He's no Aidan Zeller but he sure is cute."

Godric raises an eyebrow behind his book, almost offended by the remark. The one in the middle, unlike her friends was not shy in the slightest as she boldly winks at Godric in hopes to receive his attention hoping he is staring despite seemingly having his face buried in his large book. Without a doubt, had it been someone else, particularly his Draconis friend Lito, they would have surely appreciated the flattering gesture unlike Godric who can't help but to shake his head at the unwanted attention.

He momentarily shakes his head again, remembering what had happened at the beginning of his forth year after he had lost a bet to Aidan. The punishment was clear, to try to be friendlier and to attempt to smile more. As a venture to do just that, Godric smiled to Linda Clearwater, a younger girl from the third year unknowing it would be the beginning of her unrequited obsession. The girl was mad indeed, going to extremes as to following Godric everywhere he went, the library, his secret hideouts, including Quidditch practices. Of course, Aidan wasted no time in mocking him for it and Godric wasted none to remind him he was the only one to blame. In a final effort to gain the boys favor, the girl secretly gifted Godric chocolates with Amortentia to which he instead passed on to Aidan as a form of retribution. Only after a week of much amusement did Godric tricked his love sick friend into drinking the counter potion.
...

Godric had arrived late to the great hall. He had waited until the very last minute as he had lost track of time after a thoroughly conversation with The Wayward Seafarer. Truthfully, the young wizard always seemed to enjoy his conversations with the ghostly beauty. Once he did, all of the first years had been seated and everyone was already seated, eating from the feast before them. Just as he was about to slid into a seat not too far from Aidan, he listens to Aidan's announcement over their first Quidditch practice, McKenna's witty remark and Aidan's inquiry on his whereabouts.

"Quidditch practice tomorrow at six." He repeated letting him know he had heard him. "Bee's knees, mate." Godric says with a grin as he takes a seat. He takes his time to stare at everyone at the table, and pauses for a split second when he sees Adie. He's waiting for her to complain at what she he knows she thinks it is an ungodly hour to be awake. Instead, Emma is the first to speak to which Godric listens to quietly without making a remark. Indeed, he too wondered who would be the one to replace Aidan after they graduated. In the meantime, Godric grabs a bite out of the roasted chicken standing before him.

ADELINE BUTLER
─────────────────────────────

Adeline Butler is many things; talented caster of charms, loyal friend, sexorable trouble maker, and flyer extraordinaire, yet one thing she is not, is a morning person. Rising before breakfast is a rarity, her family are always shocked and surprised when their youngest daughter ventures from the dark cave of her room before the sun has reached its pinnacle. Teasing cries of ‘Where is the real Adie?’ and ‘What have you done with my daughter?’ are not uncommon in the Butler household when such an incident occurs. At school, forced out of bed by the necessity to attend class, Adie will often be found wordlessly munching on a piece of toast at breakfast, grumbling under her breath and squinting at the early morning sunrise. The first few weeks back at Orion are always the hardest, for she is still largely on her holiday timetable, which always aims to make the most of morning lie-ins. Adie had hoped to ease herself back into the morning schedule of waking up just before breakfast so as to ensure the longest time in bed, yet it seems that Aidan Zeller has other ideas.

Aidan opens his mouth and verbally demonstrates his complete ignorance surrounding the beauty of sleep-ins, informing those gathered around him – which luckily seems to comprise of the entire Phoenicis Quidditch team minus one beater – that a six a.m. start is on the cards for tomorrow. Adie wishes she could claim to have misheard her friend, yet there is no avoiding the jarring syllables that tauntingly dance across the table.

Eyes round with shock Adie casts an incredulous gaze towards Aidan, half expecting to see devil horns growing from his light brown locks. Worse yet, there is no telling smirk or raised brow that might suggest a joke. Adie has the sickening feeling that Aidan is serious. Certainly, she knows that Aidan is susceptible to this kind of madness, having spent the previous year forced to drag herself out of bed for similar morning practices. But on the first day back? This has to be a new record for the assertive quidditch captain, one that Adie would have been happy to leave untouched.

Perhaps, in hindsight, she shouldn’t have joked about the vegemite sandwiches. She knew that Aidan’s mood was always soured by a trip home, and greeting him with a teasing comment may have only further dissatisfied him. Adie had certainly heard Aidan’s rumblings of discontent, but had been happy in the knowledge that she would be able to gift him his real souvenir - a soppy muggle movie to add to his ever growing collection – after they had left the Great Hall. Now, however, Adie doesn’t quite feel like rewarding her friend with such a treat.

Instead her gaze takes on an even more disbelieving slant as her team-mates fail to make any sign of protest. Casual remarks about a bare-chested Aidan, next year's captaincy, and bees' knees are not what she wants to hear. It would seem that Adie is the only sane member of their team, or at least the only one who thinks that waking up before the sun is insane. While Aidan shirtless is definitely a sight for sore eyes, it will do little to keep her own eyes from falling prey to the effects of gravity. If Adie falls asleep on her broom and falls to her death, there can be no doubt that she will haunt Aidan for the rest of his days.

Adie's gaze momentarily flickers to Godric as he takes a seat with the group. A smile, more polite than friendly, is sent his way before she purposefully diverts her gaze back to Aidan. Just as Godric knows of Adie's distaste for early mornings, Adie is well aware that Godric has no problems with them. Had she been skilled at Legilimency, Adie might have heard his mental process as he waits for Adie to voice her own opinion on Aidan's ungodly proposal. As it is, shock has kept her quiet while the others let their voices be heard, yet the verbal block is only temporary, and as she snaps out of her stunned haze her words quickly follow.

“Six a.m... Six a.m.!” Adie finally blurts out, her gaze locking on the face of her tormentor as she repeats the god forsaken hour, “Are you trying to kill us?” - Death is doubtful, after all then Aidan would be down six players - “It’s still dark out that early, and it’s only the first day back, Aidan!” Adie continues her protest. She knows that nothing will change Aidan’s mind, yet that has never stopped her complaining about the ridiculously early hour before, “What about trials? What about-…” Here Adie pauses, attempting to find another excuse to throw at Aidan’s feet, yet really the only protest that comes to mind is the one that is least likely to earn Aidan’s sympathy, “…What about sleep?!”

Adie silently wonders if it was too early to call the first Nap Club meeting. Perhaps she could find Leo and claim that he needed her on urgent Leo business. Or – as her eyes follow the conversation surrounding Mac’s startlingly quick detention – Adie spectulates whether she could earn a detention that somehow prevents her from attending pre-breakfast practices only. With a mental shake of her head, Adie discards the ideas before she can give them proper consideration. She knows that no excuse will see her out of this practice. A sigh of resignation escapes her lips and she rests her chin on the heel of her palm as she gazes up at her friends, “Send a letter to my family saying I love them." She announces half-jokingly. In truth, once the fresh breeze has woken her up and Adie is gliding through the morning air with her team-mates, she knows that she’ll enjoy it. After all, she lives for the hours when she can fly through the air. The only problem is the time it takes to pull herself out of bed and get to the quidditch pitch. That is when extreme caution is advised for anyone wishing to speak with the girl.

Date: 2nd September | Time: 8.00 am | Location: Great Hall

The first full day of school dawns bright and early, sunlight seeping in through stain glass windows and falling on students eager to start the day ahead – or go back to sleep. Many enjoy their final hours of freedom before class begins, knowing that as soon as they sit down to learn, assignments and homework will mar their free time. As eight a.m. rolls around, most students can be found pulling themselves from bed and making their way to breakfast. Some eager – or unlucky – few have been up since the crack of dawn, the Phoenicis Quidditch team under the direction of their captain having woken before the sun in order to get a jump start on the other houses’ teams. Now, however the delicious smells of pancakes, bacon and eggs, porridge, and every other breakfast treat one could imagine seems to permeate the air. Any first year who has already forgotten the path from dorm room to Great Hall need only follow their nose.

The heavy double doors stand at the rear of the hall, directly opposite the teachers’ podium and bracketed by two large carvings – one a likeness of the Taniwha Moe, the other a carved map of the night sky with the cluster of stars known as matariki (the Pleiades) centre stage. On the wall either side of the doors hang the house banners, indicating which long table belongs to which house. To the far right upon entering one finds Centaurus, with Draconis right and centre. Pegasi house stands left and centre, with Phoenicis against the left wall. While the house segregation is strictly maintained during dinners, and in particular feasts such as the welcome back feast of the night before, breakfast and lunch are another story. Students are free to sit at other houses’ tables. One will commonly find most students grouped at their own house table, merely because this is typically where their close friends sit, but for those who wish to diversify their friend group, Orion allows for movement between the benches. It’s not uncommon to see Draconis sitting with Centaurus, or Pegasi beside Phoenicis. Students may roam where they please, though for the first day back it also pays to mind the Head of Houses.

The first day’s breakfast is when timetables are handed out by each house’s head. Most of the heads are able to recognise their house members, and for those who don’t and for the first years, the difference in colouring of their uniform offers a key clue. Centaurus students wear their clothing embossed with the mossy green and warm gold of their house. Draconis have a clear blue and dark bronze as decoration, while Pegasi have a softer lilac and silver combination. Students in Phoenicis house can be found with scarlet and black edgings to their uniform. Professor Dew, Head of Pegasi, can be seen gliding between the tables, stopping to hand out timetables to her students with a smile. She knows all by name and will often pause on her way to enquire after a student’s family or break. Her first years are welcomed with a calm smile and a note that if they have any problems, her door is always open. Centaurus’ head, Professor Favreau, looks as if he’s still half asleep. A piece of toast hangs from his mouth and when he finds a Centaurus student he can often be seen scratching his head as he searches through his collection of timetables. He too knows them all by name – or most of them at least - though he has been known to make up fond nicknames for his favourites. Across the hall Professor Maddox grins as he shares a joke with a Phoenicis student. He seems to view the handing out of class schedules as a competition with victory going to whoever can see all their students sorted the fastest, though he keeps getting distracted as he shares sarcastic banter with the louder members of his house. His attitude is perhaps the complete opposite of Draconis’ dignified head. Professor Jones of Draconis does not hurry, yet she is possibly the most efficient, handing out schedules with a nod of approval or a simple ’See me after breakfast to sort out this issue.’.

For the older students, their schedules are designed around the O.W.L. and N.E.W.T examinations they will be sitting at the end of the year. Some sixth years, having done terribly in one subject or another, are unable to meet requirements for their preferred topic and must pick another, while others sit tall with pride at having received near perfect marks (the majority of these seem to be found in house Centaurus). Other students are eager to look over their timetables and compare classes and schedules with friends, while others lament over a packed day and not enough free periods. Whatever your mood and wherever you find yourself sitting, there is sure to be much to discuss. The first day back is always exciting, and even the stars reflected in the enchanted ceiling above seem to be brimming with energy.

"I am vain."
Sleep filled his eyes and it was no denying that he was very much exhausted from the early morning Quidditch practice Aidan had them attend earlier this morning. It definitely did not help that he was a bit late and had to do laps around the field without his broom. He cursed Aidan's name under his breath as he did those laps and thanked the heaven's up above when he was done. Jacobi came into the Great Hall and the smell of breakfast crept up his nose, leading his stomach to let out a growl. His eyes looked left and right to make sure heard the monstrous noise while continuing to make his trek over towards the Phoenicis table, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes with his index finger as he did so.

When he sat down, he immediately reached for some breakfast items, not really speaking to anyone because he wasn't really an early in the morning person. As picked up his fork, at first, he wasn't eating anything and few people surrounding him giggled and just stared. He chuckled a little as well before finally putting a forkful of food inside of his mouth. A little girl, obviously a first year leaned over and whispered towards him. "You don't have on your robes." She smirked a little while looking, as if she was anticipating a response. Jacobi did nothing but look at her then rolled his eyes, getting up and making his way back towards the Phoenicis Common Room, searching for his robes.

Seeing that his robes were on his bed, he did the same and went face first into the sea of pillows but jolted up since it was still breakfast and he didn't want to miss anything important from anyone. Jacobi placed the robes around himself properly then proceeded yet another trek towards the Great Hall, this time feeling almost everyone's eyes on him. Of course, he stared back at the people that were staring at him then back to the Phoenicis table, seeing his plate missing. "Alright, who took it?" He asked while sitting down. It was not the morning for games to be played especially with him.

        XXX
        XXX
XXXAidan rolls his eyes at Adie's dramatic display of weakness but cannot help the slight smile that teases the corners of his lips. Her arm thumps loudly against the table when she lets it flop. Aidan winces, a part of him feeling guilty, but that part is small in comparison to his desire to win at whatever cost.
XXXMany of the members of the Phoenicis Quidditch team had let themselves go over the holidays, which only made him push them harder than usual. It's as if they'd failed to comply to the schedule he'd set them prior to the start of the holidays. All he'd asked for was, at the very least, a daily 10km run accompanied by an hour of strength work. From the looks on their faces this morning when he'd asked if they'd adhered to their fitness regimen, you'd think he'd asked them to skin a cat.
XXXAidan gives Adie a stern look at her request to use the special bathrooms. She'd tried to weasel the password out of him since he first received his Prefect's badge in his 4th year. His answer has always remained the same.
XXX"That would be against the rules, Adeline," he says, calling her by the entirety of her first name as he does when descending a lecture upon her. "The law is there for our safety. Where would we be without it? Good question, Adeline. We would be in a state of anarchy," he continues solemnly. His expression is devoid of humour or any sign that he might be anything less than serious. "You could slip. You could burn yourself with the hot water. You could die."
XXXGodric emerges in the corner of Aidan's vision. He was the only one who seemed glad to return to old routines on the first day back. Aidan think it's because he's the only one who watched his fitness levels over the holidays. Watching Godric load his plate with food reminds Aidan of the incessant hunger he has the misfortune of living with. People lean back, palms up in a placating gesture as Aidan attacks the food in front of him. He builds a modest island of food on his plate and begins to devour the small country like a vengeful God.
XXX"Alright, who took it?" Jacobi barks. Some of the younger Phoenicis scoot back, until one tentative finger veers towards Aidan, who pauses long enough to look up. He takes one look at Jacobi and gives a sheepish smile.
XXX"Sorry, didn't know it was yours. Want the rest?" he asks, handing Jacobi a plate of... One half of a mango coconut tart. "Becoming hugely overweight is actually my goal in life. Did I forget to mention?" Aidan takes a swig of orange juice, biceps flexing against his collared shirt. He has the sleeves rolled to his elbows and his robe thrown over the back of his chair.

ADELINE BUTLER
─────────────────────────────

Adeline's attention is drawn down the table towards Emma, who holds her arm up to display her toned, lean muscles. Adie laughs at the advice, shaking her head as she gives her own arms consolatory pats. "I don't think you would want me as a beater." Adie replies to her friend, "I think I'd be lost if I had to hit and aim a bludger at anyone. Just leave me to catch the snitch." Of course, Adie had seen Emma's apparent effortless push ups at practice, so perhaps there was more than a little truth to Emma's advice. Though for now, Adie much preferred her position as seeker, she just had to convince Aidan that a seeker did not need to partake in push ups, or early morning practices for that matter.

Though, judging by the stern expression on his face she wasn't likely to convince him of anything any time soon. As soon as she hears her full name, 'Adeline' , leave Aidan's lips, she knows she's about to receive one of his many lectures. The girl can't help but snort in amused derision as Aidan asks himself a question and answers it, all so that he may drive in the point that she will never likely see inside that mysterious, beautiful prefects' bathroom. His points of Adie slipping, scalding herself on hot water and potentially dying, are rather extreme, but she has to appreciate his concern all the same. Fun police or no, she knows he doesn't deny her the password out of spite, and it is probably his honesty and diligence to the school's rules that earned him the title of prefect in the first place.

"I could die, but I would die happy." Adie replies softly, her voice distant as her mind dreams up being consumed by a giant wave of cinnamon flavoured bubbles, colour changing froth, or whatever other wonders the prefects' bathroom holds. The only way she is likely to see inside, since she is sure that Aidan will not give her access, is if she were to become the Phoenicis quidditch captain next year. Though, with a glance at Mac and Emma, Adie doubts the chances of that happening. Both of her fellow sixth year team mates would make excellent captains. Though perhaps the promise of the prefects' baths would be enough to entice Adie to up her game. Not to mention - and here Adie almost gasps in excitement - she would have power over setting the practice times. Already dreams of afternoon practices, and therefore morning sleep-ins are floating in her mind, and it's these fantasies that see her missing most of the conversations that continue around her.

In fact, it is only when Jacobi arrives back and asks who took his food, that Adie blinks herself out of her day-dreaming. Glancing around she grins as Aidan offers Jacobi his remaining meal. Although his breakfast is all but gone into Aidan's ever hungry stomach, there's still plenty on the table and Adie quickly points down towards a plate of fresh pancakes, "If you're fast Cobi you might get some of those pancakes." the 'before Aidan' goes unsaid, but it's heavily implied as Adie glances back at the quidditch captain beside her.

Aidan's declaration of wanting to become overweight has Adie scoffing as she straightens her knife and fork on her plate. "I'm sorry to tell you, but you're failing miserably at that goal of yours." Adie mentions as she glances at the biceps on display. Most people - at least those who saw Aidan during one of the Phoenicis quidditch team's practices - would happily agree with her too.

"Anyway, I'm off. I've got to grab my books before transfiguration." Adie explains a moment later as she pushes herself to her feet, taking care not to bump Aidan or the student on her other side as she leaves her seat. "I'll see you two in class," Adie says to Mac and Emma, then to the seventh years, "and I'll catch you guys later." With a wave Adie leaves the table, heading back towards the Phoenicis tower so that she might quickly grab her books before classes begin.

Emma laughed at Adeline's comment. Certainly, she didn't exactly seem like the type for a Beater. You had to have no problems with aiming a Bludger at somebody with the intention of knocking them off of their broom, and also had to be completely unafraid of the same happening to you. Emma perhaps had a slight advantage in that she'd played softball and rounders back before she came to Orion. Now, when she visited her Muggle cousins, she was always the person they wanted on their team for playing those games. She told them that she played on one of her school's teams, which is why she was so good. And that her school never competed in national championships, which was why they'd never heard of her winning anything big.

Even though Aidan's lecture wasn't directed at her, she still rolled her eyes. There was definitely a reason why he'd gotten prefect and she hadn't. She was a little too willing to bend the rules about these kinds of things. Had it been her with the prefect's privilege, Adeline wouldn't have had any problem getting in. Still, if Emma got Quidditch captain next year, she'd be able to use it... She knew that she was far from the only candidate. Mac and Adeline had to be in the running too. But if anything, that was just going to encourage her to push herself even further. The opening of the captain's spot would always be at the back of her mind now every time she was at training and playing a match. Did Aidan have a say in picking the next captain? Maybe she should stop winding him up so much, just in case. Then again, if she started flattering him constantly, he'd definitely notice that something was up.

The first years didn't waste much time in pointing out Aidan as the culprit of the theft of Jacobi's breakfast. Emma rolled her eyes at Aidan's comment about becoming grossly overweight. "Aidan, you'd actually have to eat the entire table's worth of food, and the table, and then have snacks, before you'd even stand a chance of becoming even a little overweight," she remarked. As Adeline left to get her books for Transfiguration, Emma licked the last of the syrup off of her fingers, trying to decide if she was going to stay and have a chat with Jacobi, which would end up in her probably being late for Transfiguration, or be a good student and go get her stuff and go to class. When she was hoping for Quidditch captain the following year, she should probably go as well. She sighed heavily, pushing her plate in.

"I'm going to have to love you and leave you. Jones won't be happy if I'm late on my first day back, regardless of what I got in my OWLs," she said, standing up. "Mac, I'll see you in class. Everyone else, I'll see you at lunch," she said, before heading up towards the Phoenicis dormitories.

Date: 26th September | Time: 10.00 am | Location: Mākutu Village

The first class of the year had been slow for most of Orion’s students, with everyone trying to ease their way back into the beat of school. The teachers, of course, had other ideas than to take it slow, and while some students moaned about the homework that was already being set, others looked forward to expanding their mind. Those who were still in holiday mode quickly settled in to the rhythm of class. That first class flowed into the second class, which then became the third, until a whole week had passed and to most students it felt like they had never left. That first week became two, and before anyone knew it almost a month had gone by since school started.

It’s now been three and a half weeks since the ships docked in the bay, and while many people in the northern hemisphere are pulling out the extra blankets, the southern half of the globe is happily in the midst of spring. Orion looks magnificent in any weather, but it practically glows in spring. Wild flowers sprout up around the edges of the forest, and more often than not bright coloured petals can be found decorating the waters of the magical waterfalls that send down buckets of liquid on unsuspecting students. The baby unicorns have been seen wobbling about the school lawn from the windows, while a pod of bottle-nose dolphins spent the last week playing with the taniwha, Moe, in the harbour.

Of course, none of that is quite as exciting as the prospect of the first trip to Mākutu, the magical village which shares the island with Orion. For those old enough to attend this trip was long awaited. Mākutu is always a treat, no matter how many times one has visited. Nestled on the other side of the island and only a short walk through the forest, it consists of a small collection of stores that sell everything from magical and muggle treats to spell books and novels. Most, if not all, of the stores can be found along the main thoroughfare, with the houses of the residents either occupying the upper storeys of the buildings or snuggled behind. In the centre of the town is a quaint square or cobblestones. A statue in the middle of the square depicts a tall, broad shoulder man of Polynesian descent with a wand in one hand and a magical compass in the other. As the plaque beneath his effigy read, the figure is the Mākutu, the wizard who found and settled the island centuries ago. His gaze fixes on some spot in the distance, as if seeking out his next adventure.

For many, their sights are usually fixed on the Honey Pot, an adorable café by day, and quaint bar by night. It’s here you’ll usually find students and islanders alike taking shelter from the rain, or merely stopping by to try their island-famous honey mead. Praised as the nectar of the gods, or the lovers’ drink (usually only by those who have had several more than they should), it will warm your belly and soothe your worries. It should be noted that students are forbidden from consuming alcohol in the village, though light beverages like butterbeer are allowed to the older students. Thankfully, the Honey Pot offers delicious non-alcoholic alternatives for the younger students, and their hot chocolates are divine. Though, if you’re an inquisitive student or know the right people to ask, you might find your way to the outskirts of the village where the Rusty Ship Wreck stands. While it isn’t a ship, the dingy pub is rather rusty, and locals have taken to calling it ‘the Wreck’ for short. Here, if you’re discrete and don’t irk the owner, a student can purchase and enjoy almost any beverage he or she desires.

It is places like these that have the third years buzzing with excitement as they wait by the school’s main doors to be officially allowed out. It’s their first year being able to explore the town, and most have made sure that they’ll have the whole Saturday to do so, their eagerness seeing them rise early for breakfast when for most a Saturday normally calls for a lazy morning. The older students, most of whom find the pull of the town less consuming, are still all likely to indulge in a trip through the woods. Why not? It’s a chance to stretch your legs, stock up on unhealthy, sugared goods, and possibly share a virgin honey mead with your crush (legend has it sharing the drink brings a couple closer). So, though the third years jump in excitement, they aren’t the only ones waiting for Professor Li and Professor Patel to start ticking off names and allowing students to leave.

Permissions have to be checked, particularly for the third years, but eventually the students are allowed out, and in no time Orion’s pupils are streaming into the village. There is no uniform needed to be worn today, so many of the students wear their own clothes, of which vary between the mundane and decidedly muggle, to the odd and hilarious. No ignorant muggle would be able to walk through the village without stopping in their tracks to gawp at one student, at least. Thankfully, no muggle has ever stepped into the village in living record, which is reassuring for the islanders. Of course, had our protagonists known about the series of events that begin to unfold on this inauspicious day, perhaps they too would have wished never to step foot in Mākutu.
