Winter is rather unremarkable in appearance. She is average height, a bit thin, a little bit lanky. Her eyes are her only unique feature, purple, ever since the day of the incident. Her leg was supposed to be amputated, but the Doctors managed to save it. She walks with a limp, due to this. Her skin marred with the scars of her biggest regret. If only she had said no, if only she had gone alone that day. Winter is not self conscious of her scars, or of her body. She sleeps with gloves at night to protect her hands, her most precious asset. She wears clothing that her Grandparents got her and prefers vintage fashion more than anything else, as it was her Grandmother's favorite. She has a handful of old heirlooms, from the way the world used to be. Her cane used to be her Grandfather's, whittled by hand in his favorite rocking chair. Winter doesn't care what others think, she is her own person.

Even if Winter thinks she is average, her features are remarkable. Porcelain skin, white lashes and eyebrows, dainty lips. She looks like one of those hand painted dolls, with delicate fingers and moves with a grace that only those with tragedy can carry themselves with.

β₯ Janet || Janet is the agent assigned to watch over her, she doesn't say much, but it's just a comfort to know that she's always there.

β₯ Instruments || Her instruments are her family, her music is her life.
β₯ Competing || Competition has completely consumed Winter's life. She'd rather feel the rush of adrenaline than the dread of returning to an empty apartment.

For the very first time, there I see
Someone with the same pains as me
Having done this time and time again
She wore a yellow cardigan
"I just wanna stop the scars that grow
Ev-e-ry-time that I go home"
"That's why I came up here instead"
That's what the girl in the cardigan said
Whoa, wait a minute what did I just say?
I couldn't care less either way
But in the moment I just screamed
Something that I did not believe
"Hey, don't do it please!"

Aah what to do?
I can't stop this girl, oh this is new
For once I think I've bitten off more than I can chew
But even so please just go away so I can't see
Your pitiful expression is just too much for me!
"I guess today is just not my day"
She looked away from me and then she disappeared

The Chrysanthemum

{β˜› β’»β’Άβ“‚β’Ύβ“β“Ž ☚}

{β˜› β’½β’Ύβ“ˆβ“‰β“„β“‡β“Ž ☚}
Winter doesn't remember her birth parents. Her earliest memories are of her Grandparents, raising her to be the best she could be. Winter was friendly, she had plenty of friends, kids didn't care, after all, that she lived with ther Grandparents. In fact, they thought it was rather cool. Winter's Grandparents were doting, they lived in the quiet countryside of Chrysanthemum, a boring, uneventful life, but Winter wouldn't have it any other way. Everyday was the same, working on a farm meant getting up early and going to sleep late. Winter would help feed the chickens, milk the cows, and chase the foxes out of the hen house. It was a quiet life, a peaceful one, one Winter wouldn't trade for anything in the world.

Then one day, her Grandparents enrolled her in music classes. They thought Winter needed a hobby and had heard that musical theory would help her math grades. Her teacher was a kind old woman named Addison Briar who had taught famous musicians in the big city. Winter enjoyed her lessons, but she could never stick to one instrument. Every day, she would pick a new one. The harpsicord, the violin, the piano, the bass. Her heart became attuned to every instrument she touched and her music teacher urged her Grandparents to send her to the big city. It would mean selling their farm, it would mean leaving behind everything they ever knew and loved. They held off, wanting Winter to have a peaceful life and giving that stability to her for as long as possible.

Her grades began to jump up, she was doing well in school, in music, with her friends. A social butterfly that was never seen without people by her side. Then the day came, her Grandparents sold their farm for a hefty price, they could retire in the city and live an easy life while sending Winter to the large academy the Chrysanthemum City Center had for gifted students. She was eager to attend, with her cute new uniform and sparkling shoes. Winter was an instant hit, she made friends abound, who were attracted to her outsider accent and easy smile. She was happy with her new life, her Grandparents enjoying their easy life of playing games with their new friends and taking care of the dog they had brought with them.

A note was tapped to their door, a concert. At first, Winter didn't want to go, she didn't want to fall behind on her homework, but her friends convinced her and her Grandparents, having never been to a concert before, were intruiged. They all went together, Winter excited and nervous. They were sitting as a group when the bomb went off. Winter was separated from her Grandparents, she remembered the white hot light and heat from the bomb. She remembered praying, hoping for things to be okay. She remembered a shrine gate appearing before her and crossing through it, a gentle snow. When Winter awoke, she was in an unfamiliar place, a hospital, guarded by two government agents. She had caused a blizzard in the middle of spring, they thought she was working with the terrorists.

After being acquited of all charges, she was allowed to return to school, but Winter was now under their surveillance. She had a permanent limp now and walked with a cane. Winter was eager to return home, only to discover that her Grandparents had died. Her dog too, was gone, having been taken in by a shelter. Her belongings were all packed in several neat boxes. No one had bothered to tell Winter, in all of this, that her Grandparents were dead. There was another blizzard that day, in the middle of fall. Winter began to withdraw from everyone, she skipped classes, her grades began to slip, it didn't matter, her friends were all dead. She spent most of her time in the music room, her hands raw from practice. She would sleep with gloves, skipping school altogether to compete, to crush the competition, to try to feel alive again.

|| Dear Winter || AJR ||

Winter walked slowly in a circle around the water, savoring the warmth. She felt stronger in the water, but it was probably because her pain was virtually at none. "Are you sure you're okay?" Carter asked, following her around like a lost puppy. "Carter, I'm fine." Winter insisted for the umpteenth time. "Go join Serenity or something," she grunted, pausing to catch her breath. "What do you want from me anyway?" It was clear he had some underlying intention. "You keep following me around, acting all nice, what is it you want?" Carter paused, seeming baffled. "What I want?" He asked, blinking dumbly. Had she caught him? Was that why he was acting like this. "I want-" Ezra and Elise joined them, cutting him off.

Winter turned towards them, "Welcome to the shallows," Winter gestured around her with her arms, stirring up the water a bit. "Enjoy your stay," she smiled, glad they had come to break up the tension. Elise didn't know how to swim? "I could teach you, my Grandpa taught me." She wasn't a super strong swimmer, but Winter certainly knew enough to keep up with her rough-housing classmates from when she was a child. "It smells like chlorine, but it's better than nothing." She conceided with a sigh, "Peona and I worked in the smaller pool every morning, but that one was a lot warmer." The therapy pool was extra warm to be easy on the muscles, it also had a higher salinity in order to help with bouancy.

Carter and Ezra had begun to rough house, despite the multiple signs saying not to. "We should play marco-polo!" Serenity popped up beside them, managing to break the two up. "I haven't heard that name in forever, but Elise can't swim." Half of the fun was diving beneath the water so that they couldn't find you. "Hmm, we could play something else? Baby Shark? Horse?" Winter shook her head, "With those two around? They'll just butt heads," already Carter and Ezra were wrestling once more and there was no lifeguard around to stop them. Winter rolled her eyes, turning and spotting Oliver striding towards them. "Hey, no street shoes in here!" Someone yelled at him. Oliver simply rolled his eyes and walked towards the edge of the water.

"There you all are!" He growled, hands on his hips. "Do you know how long I've been looking for you for? Why are you all in the pool?" Winter shrugged, letting Serenity handle this one. "Elise wanted to go swimming, so we thought it would be a nice bonding activity." She smiled, putting an arm around Winter and Elise. "Besides, you're the one that just kind of disappeared." She pointed out, trying to remain amicable. Winter, on the other hand, had no qualms with pissing Oliver off. "Well, lunch starts in thirty minutes, so be there." He grunted, turning around and swishing his robe dramatically before leaving. Winter sighed with relief, glad he wasn't going to be joining them. The last thing she wanted to see was Oliver in a bathing suit. She had a feeling he would wear the banana boat type.

Carter needed someone to bail him out and Ezra chose a good time to intervene. Winter offered to give Elise swimming lessons and she nodded, always happy to add a new skill to her belt. Just like how Winter taught her how to cook, Elise would be taught how to swim from her as well. "Then I will be in your care, Winter." The others might try to call her Minnie, but Winter felt more natural to the tongue. "But that is hardly equitable. Is there anything you would like me to teach you?" She had more refined skills under her belt as opposed to Winter's repertoire of practical-use skills. Elise knew subjects such as studying, philosophy, sciences, even acting and manipulation - though she did not use the latter as often as she used to. Basic military strategy was something she studied as well, though not to the same level as a professional.

Before they could decide on a new game to play, Oliver arrived to reprimand them. They were to report in the eating hall in thirty minutes. "We should probably go then." Elise used the rung to help herself out, letting Serenity take care of making the boys stop fighting. "Shall we get changed first?" Their clothes were safe in shopping bags in their wheelchairs, so Elise left the boys' clothes by the poolside with their towels and went with Winter towards the changing room. Elise was faster in putting her robes back on. "I will be waiting outside, Winter." She said, limping her way back to her chair and then outside the womens' changing room. Ezra stepped out shortly after, a grin on his face as Carter, slightly bruised, stepped out after him.

"So, I need your opinion, brat princess." Ezra grinned, nudging Carter's head, who did not enjoy being nudged by a boy a little shorter than him. What was with boys and roughousing? It really was ridiculous how they always did this. "What are you talking to her about this for? What can she help with?" Elise rolled her eyes, crossing her arms in her chair. "Yes, Ezra, what can I help with?" She did not want to give advice on how to romantically pursue Winter, partially because she also had no proper experience with romance. Garrel most definitely did not count. "Wait, did you tell her?" Elise shook her head, sighing derisively. "No, I figured it out on my own. You really are quite transparent." Carter made a pained sound between a bleat and a cry. "A-anyways don't tell her!" As Carter made his plea the door opened, Serenity had finished changing and her eyes widened. "Don't tell who? Oh, about your maddening love for Winter?" A devilish smile rose on the usual serene Serenity. "We definitely won't tell, right, El? Right?" Ezra made a helpless but amused expression at how out of control all of this became.

Lunch with Oliver at first was not very exciting, especially considering how Oliver had assaulted Winter earlier. They would need to be more prudent in making sure those two were never alone together. "You two smell awful. Did you not rinse off?" Ezra and Carter still stunk like chlorine, it was filling the air with an aroma that made Elise more nauseous than usual. "Rinse off? Why would we do that?" Ezra cackled, munching at his food. "You don't like our manly stench, brat?" He slided closer to her, uncomfortably so. "You two really have no common sense." Oliver scolded, frowning. "Don't make a mess of the cafeteria, the janitors work hard enough on keeping it clean here."

Once they were finished eating, Oliver showed them something on their holos. "We have our first mission. It was sooner than what I hoped, but there's an emergency that we need to take care of." Elise read the information on the holo, eyes widening. A scouting team was sent to keep an eye on the Chrysanthemum's movements to warn Sir Ender when the next attack was going to be. As they were returning to the Underground City, a large horde of monsters were in the way, blocking the safe route back. "Father wants us to quickly head out and clear a path for them to return." The black eagle frowned, her ruby eyes smoldering. "It makes sense, we can move faster than the military corps can." But there was another problem. "Is there a reason why you did not tell us that Admiral Gray was stationed in the scouting team?" Oliver smiled, maybe a little smugly. "Was there a reason you needed to know?" His response was, as expected, a little infuriating.

Admiral Gray was with other scouts, trapped behind enemy lines. Elise frowned, trying to ignore the stench of chlorine making everything worse than it had to be. The food was already mediocre and gave the black eagle constant nausea, but the scent of the pool following them here was making it worse. It seemed men really did not care about stink like that, however. It was an emergency, but how much time did they have? That is what Winter wanted to know. "Father says the sooner the better." Oliver said, still looking smug for some reason. "The reality is that we don't have enough people to risk losing more lives when they could be saved. So we'll have to move fast." He glanced at everyone's food, and nodded. "It seems we're all done eating, so we should get ourselves geared up and ready." He stood up, his expression stern. "I'll be waiting at the Exit Bay A-2."

The Underground City had several different bays that opened up to let people in or out. Exit Bay A-2 was the one near the Ismar Frontier by the north side of the city, and it lead the way towards the Chrysanthemum. "There, all good." Serenity said, finishing attaching Elise's belt for her. "Let's go check on Winter and then meet up with the boys." They finished eating and returned to their rooms to gear up and get ready. The black eagle groaned, her legs feeling weak. "Two missions in two days is going to be hard." Already her knees were straining against her. Would she be able to hold out? It was her duty to stay standing, no matter how weak she felt. She was a soldier now, so she had a job to do.

After gathering Winter, the girls made their way to Exit Bay A-2 where many soldiers were stationed to watch the outside perimeter. The inner parts of the Underground City were more like a commoners' city district, but in the outer reaches by the bays there was more security and less decor. Here everyone remembered that this was still a warzone, and that they were still in the apocalypse. Oliver was already there waiting for them, nodding his head in acknowledgment. "We're here." Serenity said, waving her hand in good cheer, her other hand on the wheelchair. They would be dropping it off here for Elise to return to it once the mission was over. "Are you good to move about like that?" Oliver asked, looking at her with concern and perhaps a little bit of satisfaction. "I will be fine." She replied with an even tone. "You'd better stay strong too, Winter. We're counting on you if anything goes wrong." Oliver sounded less gentle with Winter for some odd reason that the black eagle could not discern.

Once Ezra and Carter arrived, it was time to head out into the city. "Put your mask on, the air's dirtier outside.'" Elise learned that the hard way when she had her first outing, so she wanted Winter to be aware as well. The monsters were spreading some sort of gas making the air less breathable for humans, and the longer they owned the city, the worse it was going to become. Already they needed masks to breathe safely outside. Carter and Ezra were already butting heads on the vanguard, taking formation at the front. "We're heading to these coordinates. Let's move quick and fast, the monsters are swarming the area as is." Oliver instructed, pinging their holos with the information.

"The fastest way is through the alley here." Elise said, updating the information with her new proposed route. "We will be safe in a blind spot so that the Chrysanthemum will not notice our movements. This will get us to Admiral Gray's position more quickly." Oliver nodded, accepting the plan. "Should we fly over?" Serenity asked. "That would be the fastest way, right?" Unfortunately, the answer to that was not what Serenity was hoping for. "If we do not want the Chrysanthemum to see us, we have to stay on the ground this time." Stealth and speed was the priority. "Well, what are we waiting for?" The Bay Doors opened, revealing the outside world to them and they left the elevator, ready for their first operation.

There were monsters all over, but if they followed Elise's path, they would be able to hopefully get in and out to save the scouting team before it was too late. "Admiral Gray, we are on the way. Can you and your team meet us at the Tanfang Fountain on Billiard Road?" The voice crackled on the other end - Gray's holo must have been damaged. "W-w... will be... w... ait... us!" Carter made a face, trying to make out the words. "It's a lot of static, I can barely understand what she's saying." Ezra clapped his hands together, grinning. "Well, what are we waiting for? Let's get moving!"

【ɗιαƖσgΟ…Ρ” cσƖσя:#BDA0CB β™™ тнσυgΠ½Ρ‚ cσƖσя #F7B3DA】
|| Dear Winter || AJR ||

The changing room for their battle uniforms were small, individual rooms. Winter set her belongings down, hoping that they would still be there when she returned. The door was labeled with her name on it, their battle uniform simple, but sleek. A black undersuit, skin tight. Over that went the armor, made of pollymetal, a type of spun metal that was ultra light for easy movement. A second cane was left for her, this one a bit sturdier than her normal, with a button that released a secret sword from the inside of it. Winter admired it for only a moment before a knock on the door interrupted her from her reverie. Serenity and Elise were ready and waiting for her. "I'll be out in a minute!" She called, holding the helmet against her as she fumbled with the last wrist strap.

As usual, Winter was the last to be ready. She had to move slowly, otherwise her pain would worsen. It wasn't as though she could live on pain killers either, unless she wanted to be addicted to drugs at sixteen. "Coming!" She opened the door, following the others to the exit gate. Mask? Just how bad had things gotten out there? Why were they allowing the monsters to roam around? Winter put the helmet on over her head, bringing the mask down. "Why are they not focusing efforts on killing monsters?" Winter asked, feeling more and more like a chess piece and less like a vassal. "The humans are dirty creatures," Zuko murmured. Yuuki rolled his eyes, "they've been so busy fighting amongst themselves that they haven't noticed the monsters multiplying. Any worse and they won't have a Chrysanthemum to protect anymore."

Elise would be updating their route. They moved as a unit, somewhat cohesive despite the fact that they had never practiced together. Winter was nervous of course, seeing all of these monsters roaming around and no one doing anything about it put her on edge. They would be meeting them soon, hopefully. "Spirit staff," Winter whispered, already on guard. She hoped that the others would be on their guard as well, but they seemed so at ease. Winter was falling behind, she shook her head, doing her best to keep up with their fast pace. Now that Elise was walking, she didn't want to hold anyone back. Carter seemed to notice her falling behind, slowing his steps by a few paces. "Hop on my back," he offered, but Winter shook her head, her expression bewildered.

"What if we're ambushed? That's ridiculous," she muttered, the enemy could be anywhere. "Just for a little, so you can catch your breath. I'll be your legs," Winter wasn't sure whether he was completely serious or not, to be frank. She rolled her eyes, but conceided, clambering onto his back. He held onto her cane as she wrapped her arms around him, finding him to be oddly warm. "Are you sure you can walk like this?" Winter asked, to which he laughed. "Yeah, now we've got our own sniper." He caught up with the others easily, Winter changing her staff into a bow, taking his suggestion literally. She aimed her bow at an odd creature looming in front of them, its maw covered in blood. Winter shot two arrows at it, the monster letting out a horrible sound as it turned into a speck of dust in the early spring snow.

"Good shot," Ezra praised. No doubt it was bugging him as well, the amount of monsters they were just allowing to roam around freely. Did they not understand that these things would attack them unprovoked? Didn't they know what the monsters were capable of?

The monsters were filling the air with energy toxic for humans. They needed to be killed, but the humans were busy fighting amongst themselves. Still, Elise could appreciate the strategy and the mindset behind it. She understood why the Slithers were doing this, even if she did not necessarily agree with the decision. Winter was asking why as they walked through the safest route Elise could find, following Ezra's lead as he traced her path. "Simply put, it is good strategy." Elise explained to Winter, who was not as well versed in politics and war strategy as Elise was. "To rebel against the chrysanthemum while they are forced to waste resources and time trying to contain the monster threat? What better time is there to fight an opponent that is larger than you?" For how harmful and vicious the Chrysanthemum truly was, Elise saw that the Slithers were justified in their decision.

They all had their weapons at the ready, six Vassals geared out in their spirit weapons. They made it this far, but the monsters were only growing in number. "I hear a lot of them, they're getting closer." Serenity whispered, afraid. There were monsters swarming the streets on all sides. A big pitched battle would only attract the horde closer to them. If the scouting team was out in danger, this could become very messy very quickly. "We should fight." Ezra decided with a grin. "Winter and Elise and I could fight this much just the three of us. It'll be a piece of cake!" Oliver shook his head, frowning. "Not all of us are as experienced as you three." He said, gesturing in particular to Serenity, the one least willing to fight. "There's a real risk if we try that." Someone could get hurt, most definitely. "Then here's a better idea!" It was obvious Ezra was becoming antsy with all the monsters they could hear around the walls, behind them, above them. "Me, Elise, Winter. The three of us distract them while you guys get the scouts to safety, then-"

Oliver was not going to be able to control him. "Calm down." Elise said with a decisive tone, her steps, while limping and uneven, still somehoe poised and graceful at the same time. "Our first priority is locating the scouts. Once we can secure their safety, we will adjust the startegy accordingly. For now, fight the monsters that get too close, but do not begin a large scale ruckus." The less attention they drew to themselves, the better chance they would have at survival. "Ugh, fine, but only because you said so." Ezra growled. It was evident that he disagreed, but he would leave it at that for the time being.

The Tanfang Fountain was rubble, with water spraying out from the pipes that connected it to the city's reservoir. The scouting team was already there, and Admiral Gray was helping nurse the injured. "This is smaller than what it should be." There were only a handful of them here, instead of a full squadron. "The others didn't make it, Oliver." Admiral Gray hissed, glowering angrily at him. "The four of us are the only survivors, and we have information." They needed to get them back alive, but Elise could see they were barely in any condition to move. "I don't think they can make it all the way back on their own." Oliver said with a serious expression, his dark hair stiff with stress. "Winter, you and Carter should take them back using an ice transportation method while-"

No, that would not work. "Oliver, you should be the one to go back." Elise said suddenly, interjecting. Oliver seemed annoyed almost that he was being superceded by his own advisor. "You and Ezra will be responsible for bringing them back safely." Ezra almost looked betrayed, his eyes widening. "But Winter can do that -" Elise calmly interrupted him again. She was a prodigy after all, someone like Oliver would not be able to come up with a better strategy than her. "Ezra moves more quickly, and his rocks are less noticable at a long distance. You are needed at the base as you are the quickest way to have your Father alerted and prepare a medical team to retrieve them."

She grimaced, looking at the increasingly afraid Serenity, and the nervously grinning Carter. Would they be enough? Elise would have to hope so. "Wait, you can't kick me out of the main team! Why can't I just bring everyone back in one trip?" That would not work either and Elise shook her head. "Unless you want the Chrysanthemum to know we had scouts spying on them, we cannot do that." Carting that many people at once would be far too obvious. "Go quickly and come back just as quick. The four of us will have to put on an act." Oliver grit his teeth, wanting to argue but he knew he would not win. Was he regretting giving her the role as an Advisor? "So while we return to base with the scouts, you'll act as if you're raiding the monsters to clear them out." ELise nodded, a wiley smile on her face.

"W-well, you better stay alive! I'll be back before you know it!" Ezra created stone platforms and Oliver helped load the wounded on board. "Stay safe." Admiral Gray implored. "Winter, show them what you got." After they left Elise sighed, wondering if this was a mistake. "This is a good open area. We can set up defenses." She looked to Winter and Carter, who had ice and sand powers respectively. "Can you two set up traps? Siri and I will lure the monsters into them, that way we can help clear up the toxic air even a little bit." She marked the specific areas she and Serenity would lead the monsters to, and would trust that Winter and Carter would make the traps to kill them in droves. "Wait, did you just call me Siri?" Serenity almost blushed in surprise. "No. Come with me, there is no time to waste."

They traveled cautiously, Winter shooting any monster that got in their way, trying not to go overboard as per Elise's instructions. They irked Ezra too, she was glad she was not the only one perturbed by the monsters being allowed to run free. "Hey, you alright?" Carter asked, adjusting her on his back. "Yeah, I'm fine." Her legs hurt, but it was better than walking and possibly holding them back. They would reach the fountain soon. Winter shot at another monster in front of them, Ezra striking them down from the sidelines. Serenity was practically shaking with each step, like a baby doe unable to fend for herself. Elise on the other hand, strode confidently as though she owned this road. How did she do that? Winter wondered, exude so much confidence for someone who could barely muster the will to fight only a week ago.

Winter almost envied her, almost. "We're here," Oliver announced. Winter slid off of Carter's back, taking her cane back. "Thanks," she murmured, grateful. Her legs were slightly numb now, but she hadn't been left behind. "Admiral Gray," it was a relief to see her alive and well. "Winter," she smiled, seeming exhausted. It was clear that whatever they had been doing had been dangerous, considering the injuries the four sported. Nearly an entire platoon had been wiped out by the enemy. Winter was not surprised, the Chrysanthemum had the power of the Nobles behind them now. With their money and backing, the Chrysanthemum could wipe something like a Platoon out with a single sneeze. "I'm glad to see you in relatively one piece."

The argument on transporting them back had begun. Moving all of them at once could attrackt the monsters, which was a scenario that they did not want to befall on them. "Go Ezra, we'll be fine." Winter could set up defenses while Ezra and Oliver transported the four back. Hopefully they were smart enough to lay low and hopefully Ezra would listen to Oliver's instructions. "I'll do that now," four walls made of ice went up while Carter laid out sand traps. Serenity was still shaking in fear, brought out of her reverie only by Elise using her nickname. They would do something else, which meant that Winter would be alone with Carter. Even if it was only for a few minutes, the thought of it was enough to make Winter nervous.

"Done," Carter wiped snow off of his hands on his pants. Winter sat on a large piece of rubble, wondering where Elise and Serenity had gone off to. "Aren't you gonna like, stand guard or something?" Carter asked, seeming nervous. "No, the monsters will come either way. I'm just preserving my energy for when they get here," Winter replied. "Oh," Carter nodded dumbly. "Want some water?" He handed a bottle to her, Winter taking it gratefully. "Thanks,"[/colot] the late-winter air was dry. [color=#BDA0CB]"Here they come," the ground beneath them vibrated, small pebbles displacing themselves around the area. Winter rose, placing the water down carefully. "Spirit staff," the first one rounded the corner, quite large. "Kill it," Zuko screeched in her ear.

"What do we do?" Carter asked, clearly nervous. "Wait," Winter replied calmly. "It's getting closer," he looked as though he might pee himself. "Wait," Winter replied once more. The monster grew closer, towering over them. "Winter? Winter what do we do?" Carter was practically crying now. It had half a face, the other half a skeleton. "Ice spray," she swung her staff, chunks of ice flying at the monster, striking it. It reared its head, charging. Winter struck once more, this time with thicker, sharper ice. It disappeared in a cloud of smoke. Carter had frozen, he was shaking as the dust settled.

How was Elise so confident? When someone was afraid at all waking hours in the day, and spent their life living in fear, at a certain point, they can become able to remain functional even when afraid. The same fear was in her, but she suppressed and controlled it. She had a job that she was assigned to do, and like any Hresvelg and proud noble, she would fulfill her task, no matter how afraid she might be. "That's a lot of monsters." Serenity's voice wavered as the two climed the rooftops, seeing the horde. The Chrysanthemum truly had become a place of disaster but now was their chance to try to reduce the damage, at least a little bit. "I will protect you. Use your light to get their attention." Serenity gulped and raised her arm. A ball of light appeared in front of her and it flickered, moving in front of the monsters.

Immediately, they began to roar, following the ball of light, following the power they no doubt recognized. "I- what do I do now?" Serenity asked, Elise could feel her body trembling as they huddled together atop the roofs. Elise's water bullets were floating in the air above her head, ready to fire. "Move them towards the traps. Let us continue." Serenity helped Elise to the other roof and kept moving the light back towards the Tanfang Fountain, an open clearing between rows of houses where Winter and Carter were waiting. As the largset monster followed the ball, the sand and ice smashed down, defeating it. Other monsters rushed after through the smoke, but the rest of the ice and sand continued to release, striking the foes.

Elise jumped down from the roof, landing painfully on her ankle. It twisted oddly but she grimaced and ignored it. "Wh-what? El, what are you doing?" Serenity asked in fear and shock. "More monsters are coming through the alleys on the other side, are you not paying attention?" Could Serenity not hear the sounds growing closer. "We will help defend until Ezra returns." Serenity hopped down too, looking pale and worried. As Elise limped, Serenity wrapped an arm around her shoulder, helping her move more quickly. "Winter! There are more on the other side!" Carter was busy staring at Winter he did not notice the monsters nearly at him, their claws and fangs prepared to attack. Elise moved her arm, the five bullets firing in rapid succession similarly to a machine gun, ripping holes through the monster. Serenity let out a yelp, waving her sword of light clumsily, like one would hold a baseball bat. "Good work on the traps, you too. Can you hold on for ten more minutes?" Based on where Ezra was on her holo map, it would take him ten minutes to reach them for extraction.

They were fighting the waves of monsters when a disaster happened. As Carter finished off a monster that was trying to reach Winter, he did not notice himself being ambushed from behind and he was struck on the back by a long claw. It hit him again as he fell, striking his mask. "C-Carter!" Serenity screamed as he began coughing from the toxic air. Elise executed the monster, alarmed by the scene. She tore off her sleeve and handed it to Serenity, her bad leg trembling. She soaked it in rain water and then Serenity nodded, pressing it to Carter's mouth. "Hopefully this will help him breathe until help comes." This was bad, his lungs might take irreversible damage if too much of the air got in. It was not long after when they saw a rock flying in the air, and a shower of rock and flames later, the monsters were cleared out. "We made it! Let's get going, hop on!" Ezra held his arm out and Elise took it, accepting the help onto the rock.

"What happened to Carter? Where is his mask?" Oliver asked as Serenity helped Carter up, his back bloody. "He got hurt, we have to move quickly." Serenity insisted, hands shaking. "Elise did too, she can barely stand." Serenity looked over at Winter, reporting her status as well. The black eagle was already exhausted from yesterday's mission, and now that she could rest her eyes began to droop. "It's okay, I got you." Ezra moved her head to his lap, his hands surprisingly gentle. "You did good. I'll take us all to safety now."

"Carter, move!" Winter shoved him out of the way, her cane in the mouth of a beast as she tried to keep it off of them. Carter seemed to be shaken out of his reverie, letting down a wave of sand on the monster. Winter was glad for it, Elise and Serenity rejoining them at last. Carter suddenly took a hit to the back, distracted for just a split second. Winter took down the monster quickly, striking it with ice. Carter was in trouble, while Elise and Serenity attended to him, Winter held the beasts off. She grimaced as one struck her, but the wound was superficial, barely scratching the surface. "Winter!" Serenity squeaked, "I'm fine! Just help Carter!" Winter replied, turning back in front of her.

Rocks began to pelt the monsters around them, Winter sighed with relief, glad they had returned. The rest of the monsters dissipated, but Winter was sure that by now, they had caught the Chrysanthemum's attention. Winter hopped onto Ezra's rock transport, Serenity helping her up. Carter was practically blue in the face, they were running out of time. "Can you go any faster?" Winter asked, Elise having passed out from exhaustion. "No, but we're nearly there." Ezra grit his jaw, trying to speed up. "Nearly there," Winter took in a deep breath. "What are you doing?" Oliver asked as Winter took off her mask, placing it over Oliver's head. She was fine, she was a musician, a one minute breath hold was nothing. "Winter!" Oliver was yelling at her now, but she shook her head, pointing to Carter's labored breathing. He was the priority. They reached the entrance, the door opening to let them in. Home free.

"Winter, what you did was incredibly reckless." Sir Ender said as she sat in his office, wearing her plainclothes once more. She shifted in her seat. "I'm fine, I did what I had to." She had a band aid over the small cut, the medic insisting on treating it. "Carter was turning blue." Sir Ender narrowed his eyes, no doubt he was not used to children who talked back. The door opened, both Lidia and Julian entered, the two of them bickering, which seemed to be the new normal. Was something wrong? "Did you tell her?" Dr. Lidia inquired, crossing her arms. "No, not yet. I was getting to that," Sir Ender sat down in his chair. "I was getting to it," tell her what? What did Winter need to know? She began to grow nervous, shifting in her seat.

"Winter, let's face it, you're a liability." She knew that, of course, and she nodded. "We've been experimenting with renewal cells at a rapid rate, as well as regenerating the body in order to enhance its capabilities." Winter processed this slowly, "So essentially, you're trying to make a super soldier." She knew where this was going, her mind returning to the Chrysanthemum. They had tried to do the same thing to her, to make her into their tool. She stood suddenly, the chair falling backwards. Julian subtly stepped in front of the door. She still had her power- "Winter, just listen." Lidia scolded, Julian picking the chair back up. "We would never do anything to endanger you, in fact, this could help your pain." She sat back down slowly, feeling slightly numb. Help her pain? No, that was just another excuse.

"Essentially we would-" Lidia began to explain it, but Winter wasn't listening. She couldn't escape, she was reliant on their medication if she wanted to keep her body functioning. "What do you think?" Winter blinked, looking up. "Were you listening?" Lidia sighed, sitting on the edge of Sir Ender's desk. "What will it do to me?" Winter asked softly. "If it works the way we want it to, you will no longer be reliant on a cane or have a limp." Winter sat quietly for a moment, turning the idea around in her head. "How long will it take?" She asked quietly, "Overnight, you'll be asleep the entire time." Her hands balled into fists in her lap. "I don't have a choice, do I?" Sir Ender cleared his throat, "of course you do, but I can't see you out on the field for very long if you don't." Essentially, it was a no.

"Fine," Winter mumbled. "Alright, did you eat dinner?" She shook her head, "Perfect, come on." Winter followed them to the medical ward. They went through the double doors, her heart thumping nervously in her chest. "If it goes well, will you offer the same thing to Elise?" She wondered aloud. "If it goes well, we would offer it to all of the soldiers." Julian replied, "but Lidia insisted on having you try it first, since you would benefit the most."

"You're not to put stress on your ankle for some time. Give it time to recover and you'll be fine in no time." Julian said, finishing wrapping her ankle. The bandage would support her ankle and help it heal, but it was still best to let it rest. "I will. Thank you, Doctor." She slightly lowered her head to indicate a bow and sighed, laying quietly on her bed on the lower bunk. "I'll take my leave now, have a good day." Julian left, leaving Claude with shrug of his shoulders, looking almost helpless as he tore his stare away from her ankle. "Be more careful, alright? You shouldn't go and get yourself injured like that." This was not a serious injury, there were others who had it worse. "Carter is lucky to be alive, and Winter was the one who saved him." How was he doing? She was back in her usual isolation, wanting a little bit of alone time. Serenity was not here, she was with Ezra, apparently planning some sort of surprise for Winter.

"He was being treated, since he inhaled some of that smoke." Claude said, his brows arching slightly as he helped Elise move her leg back under the sheets. "How bad was it out there? In here, we barely even hear rumors of the state of the outside world." Elise told him how the toxic air was so bad you had to wear a mask, told him about how dangerous it was, and how the monsters were only multiplying now that the nobles were no longer in the game. The nobles were the ones who most often raided the monsters, but without that population control, the breeding and multiplying was only going to worsen from here. The door opened then, someone interrupting their talk. "Elise von Hresvelg, we need to chat." Oliver was glaring down at her, his eyes almost glowing with emotion. "Are you able to stand?"

"No, I cannot." She offered a smile, trying to hide her fear. She did not want to be burned again, especially in front of her brother. "Hey, leave her alone. From what I heard, she was the one who came up with the big plan to save everyone." Claude held his arm out as if to protect her. "That's the problem, Claude." Oliver hissed, pushing him out of the way. "I am the squad leader. You have to relay your information through me, and then I make the final decisions. You broke the chains of command by ignoring my orders." He slapped her hard across the face, but Elise accepted it, wincing. It was better than being burned, it was better than having her flesh scorched like before.

Oliver looked at his hand for a moment after the sound finished echoing in the room and he grit his teeth, looking away. There was guilt reflecting on his face, he lost control of himself. "...You have a really good head. You can stay calm and in control in an emergency." He said, backpedaling now. "You're absolutely an asset, Elise. All I ask is that you respect the chain of command. I'm the captain, so my orders should be absolute." He coughed, standing up straight again, putting his glove back on his hand. "And in return, I will listen to you properly and weigh your words with respect." If it would stop her from being slapped again, she was okay with that. She nodded, trying not to appear timid. "Then have a good day, I will take my leave." He stepped out, leaving Claude smoldering with rare anger, but also shame. "I'm sorry, El, I couldn't stop him." Elise smiled, taking his hand. "He is a vassal, it would have been dangerous to try and stop him." Her cheek stung, but it was a pain she could endure. "Can you get some ice? I do not want bruising, it would be best if the others did not find out what happened."

Oliver was their captain. If they stopped respecting him, what would happen in battle if no one listened to his orders? As disagreeable as Oliver was, it was important that the team dynamic stay amicable and strong. "But you're still my sister." Claude's eyes burned. "And with dad and mom not here... I have to protect you as best as I can." Claude always was thin and weedy. He would rather use a smile than a fist to handle his problems. Someone like Claude was not meant to live in hard times like this. "I wish to sleep." Claude nodded, knowing she must be beyond tired. "I'll get ice and leave you to it. Sweet dreams, alright?" She closed her eyes, sleep taking her instantly.

Winter lay naked on the table as she was prepped, listening to the sound of her heartbeat on the monitor. "Count of three, then a deep breath." She nodded, "one...two...three!" Winter hissed as she felt the pain between her legs, the final tube inserted. "Alright, done." She was lifted off of the metal table and lowered into the glass cylinder, a mask fixed over her face. It began to fill with water, Winter feeling as though she might suffocate. Bad memories quickly resurfaced, she could hear Lidia's voice in her ear. "Calm down, you are safe." She nodded, the water up to her midrif. Did she have to do this? Winter placed her hands against the glass. "I want to come out," it was up to her shoulders now. "It's too late for that," Lidia replied. "Nearly there, you're going to feel a slight burning sensation in your chest." She was right, it felt awful. "Winter, calm down." Everything was spinning, Winter was panicking.

The burning got worse, the water rising over her head. She slammed her fists against the glass, wanting to get out. "Winter, you need to stop. You are perfectly safe," Lidia reminded her, she felt something else, something cold. Her limbs stiffened, then slowly, relaxed, her eyelids fluttering shut. "Good girl, just go to sleep." Out like a light. "This better work, I'm tired of having a weak vassal." Zuko's arms were crossed. "She isn't your vassal," Yuuki retorted, watching with concern as the tubes were inserted along her back. Glowing red liquid began to infuse along her spine. Yuuki and Zuko shared a glance, knowing that unearthly glow. It was the poison of one of the monsters in the Boundary. What were they doing with it? How did the humans distill it into a medicine?

They were nearly halfway through when Winter's eyes suddenly opened, glowing red. She banged on the glass, screaming in pain. "It's alright," Lidia tried to assure her, "put her out." She whispered to the anesthestist beside her. "Winter, just take a few deep breaths, you're going to be fine." It took five minutes, but Winter was finally out again, resting peacefully against the glass like a snowflake inside of snowglobe. The timer trickled down, there were no further incidents. When the eight hours were over and the water began to drain, Winter roused almost immediately. She was sluggish, having to be heavily sedated over the last four hours. "Welcome back," Yuuki's face greated her. "Did it work?" Zuko shoved him out of the way. Winter groaned, turning her head to the side as she was disconnected from everything.

"How do you feel?" Dr. Lidia asked, standing over her. "Horrible," she vomitted over the side of the table, exhausted and weary to her core. "How is your pain?" She wanted to know, "I don't know. I can't feel anything, but I can feel too much." There was no other way to describe it. "Let's sit you up and get you something to eat," it was morning, that much Winter knew. She was given toast with butter and some water to sip at, a blanket drapped around her shoulders. Vitals were taken every ten minutes, it was a full hour before everything started to wear off and Winter felt more like herself. "How is your pain?" Dr. Lidia asked again, now that she had a bit of time to recoupe. "Gone," Winter realized. "Would you mind walking for me?" She was unsteady on her feet, but she could walk without limping.

"For now we will deem this a tentative success, but I'd like to see you in action." Lidia admitted, noting something on her holo. "I have a duel with Oliver after lunch today," Winter said as she put her clothes on. "My bladder is it... fixed?" She whispered, "it should be, but we'll have to see." Winter nodded, excited about the prospect of no longer having to wear a diaper. "Can I go?" She asked, tying her Slither robe around her waist. "Yes, but I'm sure Sir Ender will want to see you sometime today-Winter!" She was already halfway out the door. "Yes, I know!" No cane, no limp, she walked slowly because she was dizzy, but that was it.

Winter was excited. "I don't like what they did to you," Yuuki appeared beside her. "That stuff looked... toxic," she paused. "What do you mean? Did you watch?" She blinked, hesitant. "I think they used monster blood on you."

Early in the morning, something very strange happened. "Sorry, Claude! I'm stealing your sister for the day!" Ezra declared after breakfast was finished. Elise barely got to eat anything before she was whisked away from the breakfast table in the cafeteria, with Ezra at the handles. "Wh-what are you doing? I was eating!" Ezra winked, grinning. "What? It's not like you eat anything anyways, the food here is crummy!" He pointed towarsd the marketplace. "We're gonna see what other food is available here at the Underground City!" Elise frowned, trying not to fall out of her chair wit hthe speed Ezra was taking her. "Do you really think there will be anything?" Ezra nodded, full confidence in his face. "Look, brat princess. You starving yourself isn't gonna help anyone. You don't like the food, but I do know one thing." He raised a finger and pointed at himself. "You were happy to eat what I made! So I'll get some stuff, and I'll cook something for you!"

"What about the surprise you were planning for Winter?" They never had a chance to give her a surprise for graduating from therapy yet, it was still in the works. "I'll show you after I get some stuff." As Ezra and Elise went to the underground farms to pick out whatever produce was available, Elise could hear the sounds. Someone was taking pictures around her while Ezra was talking to the farmers. Hydroponic technology was in use to make the farms work, as well as artificial lights for simulated sunlight. There were even animals, though meat was a scarcity here. The seafood was all synthetic, made in the factories, and tasted more like plastic than anything else, which was a shame. Real fresh seafood was nearly extinct now due to all of the pollution in the ocean. Still, who was taking photos? She glanced around, trying to catch a glance but she caught nothing.

Ezra grinned, a bag of cooking tools on one arm of the wheelchair, a bag full of food supplies in the other. They then went to the kitchens to begin working. "What are you doing, get out of here!" Some of the cooks yelled but Ezra did not care about the rules. "I'm a vassal, do you really think you can stop me?" Using the power of threats, he was able to secure a corner of the communal kitchen for his own use. He pulled something out of his bag then, a set of paper pages. "What is that?" Elise asked, ignoring her stomach pain from having not eaten enough in a very long time. "It's a set of recipes. I marked down everything the three of us made in the Boundary." He said, winking. "If we bring back the taste of the old days, you'll stop starving, Winter might cry out of nostalgia, and I'll earn your endless adoration, and most of all, you'll owe me!" He made a smug grin, nodding. "So I think I'm gonna make this."

Elise half expected it to be another round of mystery meat stew, but Ezra had other plans. Instead what happened was some sort of salaed mixed with a unique sauce of Ezra's own creation, using a mixture of different herbs and oils to create the perfect taste. "Is that not what Winter made for us the first day I woke up?" Elise asked, remembering vaguely that day. "That's right! I'm making enough dishes for all six of us, and we'll have a picnic in the simulated garden once Winter's woken up." After finishing making their lunches, Ezra took the handles again. "Let's go invite everyone! Then Carter will be jealous that I'm better at him at cooking too!" Elise rolled her eyes, boys were always like this, were they not? "If it tastes anything like it did in the Boundary, I might begin eating again." She offered him a smile, which for some reason made Ezra look even more smug than he normally did.

Winter walked into the dining room, but lunch was already over. Damn, that meant she was supposed to duel Oliver. "There you are," speak of the devil and he will come. She turned around slowly. "Did you think hiding in your room would delay our fight? Are you scared?" Oliver taunted. "Not even a little," Winter replied. "I'll see you there in ten minutes then," he walked off, swishing his cape as he went. Winter's stomach growled, lunch might have been over but she smelled something cooking in the kitchen. Maybe she could snag something? Maybe they left snacks out? She walked slowly, ignoring Zuko and Yuuki's bickering as she walked into the kitchen. "Ezra? Elise? What are you two doing?" The food Ezra was making smelled familiar. "Is that what I think it is?" Winter asked, leaning against a counter.

"You have a good nose," Ezra laughed. He looked between Winter and Elise, "it is." He winked, Winter reached over to snag a piece of bread, practically scarfing it down. She was hungry, "Elise, what happened to your cheek?" She asked, pausing long enough to observe. Ezra handed her a bottle of water, which she chugged. "Who hurt you? That wasn't on your face yesterday." She reached out to touch it, then thought better of it. "Sorry," Winter murmured. "Hey, can I have some of that?" She reached for it, but Ezra slapped her hands away. "No can do, we're gonna have a picnic." Ezra replied, packing it up. "I can't, I have to beat Oliver up." She finished her water and bread, the rest of the food would have to wait.

"How long is that gonna take? Like a minute? Five?" Winter glanced between them. "Are people making bets?" She asked incredulously. "Yeah, I have a week's worth of cake on you, so you'd better win." Winter crossed her arms, "What about you Elise? What'd you bet?" She glanced at the clock after listening to Elise's answer. "Shoot, it's time already. You're gonna come watch, aren't you?" She was infuriated, hearing Elise's answer. Oliver had hurt her, Oliver had slapped her. Winter's hands balled into fists. She was gonna make sure Oliver paid for what he did to her friends. Talking down to them, hurting them, thinking he was better than all of them. No doubt Oliver thought he was the strongest.

"There you are, I thought you were gonna back out." Oliver grinned as she arrived. There were people in the stands, watching, taking bets. "I can't believe them," no doubt this was the most entertaining thing that had happened to them this week. "I'm not backing out, you don't scare me." Winter watched as he cracked his knuckles. Lidia was here to record data, the Vassals had their own viewing area. This match had only been arranged yesterday, how did word spread so quickly? Winter shook her head, nevermind, that didn't matter. "Alright you two, we want to see a clean match." Claude said, the mediator, supposedly. He was looking better, the color in his face having returned. "Powers and fists only. No outside interference. Got it?" Winter nodded, Oliver nodded at well. Carter glanced at her in concern, no doubt noting her missing cane.

"3...2...1... go!" Winter threw off her Slither robe, knowing it would only get in the way. Oliver did the same, he was wearing tight fitting pants and a shirt underneath. Who know, Winter had assumed he was just wearing underwear this entire time. "Spirit armor!" She quirked a brow, right off the bat? Alright. The floor beneath her hummed with energy, "spirit armor."

"The bread is done! You can't tell me that a man who can cook like this isn't a girl's dream?" Ezra with oven mitts on, removed the bread on the pan, steaming and smelling quite delicious, almsot identical to what Winter made that fateful day. "You may be overestimating yourself a little." It was odd in a way she could not explain. Elise knew that Ezra coveted her, that he wanted to touch her and bed her. Yet, why did she feel safe with him? Why was she not afraid that he would simply do as he wished and claim her body? Ezra was known for being a wild animal after all, something like rules did not apply to him. But he has never done anything untoward or disrespectful. He always paid close attention to her boundaries. With Ezra, she could forget the fear, at least temporarily.

Winter came, no doubt lured here by the smell. "Darnit, this was supposed to be a surprise!" Ezra sighed for dramatic effect, brushing her hands away so that she could not have a taste test. How could Ezra be so attentive to even notice that Elise was not eating, or that Winter missed the old days in the Boundary when everything was so much simpler? That was when the black eagle noticed it. Winter was standing. She did not have her cane, nor any other helping aid. Her eyes widened slightly but she did not open her mouth. Whatever happened, it must have been a secret. She would not speak aloud and risk anything. She was distracted by a sense of being watched again. Whoever was taking pictures, were they doing it again? Was there a member of the old paparazzi still functioning in the Underground City?

Elise did not want to cause trouble when Winter asked about her bruise. Yet, she also felt bad for deceiving these two in the past. Elise was not usually one to wear guilt, but Winter and Ezra were both special cases for her. She could trust them as much as she could trust her very own family. "...Our captain." She said softly, not wanting others to overhear. If there was a scandal and Oliver was implicated, how badly would that damage their efforts here as the Vassals? They needed Oliver, like him or not, he was necessary if they wanted to end this apocalypse. After the fight, they would get to enjoy a nice picnic. A break from all the stress of battle would be greatly appreciated. "Fight well. Show him what all of your training in the boundary is worth."

Claude as the mediator, Winter and Oliver's duel was about to begin. They removed their cloaks and robes, ready to do battle, exchanging words in the spirit of a good match. Long ago, Elise considered herself to be one of the strongest Vassals. Even then, she was happy to use force in order to get her own way. She was a prodigy after all, she was capable of improving faster than the average person. Yet somehow, Winter surpassed her. In terms of raw ability and hard work, Winter had become stronger than Elise long ago. She smiled a little, accepting it. Elise had other strengths after all, so there was no need to worry. "What are you smiling about, brat?" Ezra asked, poking her in the side as he sat next to her. "I am awaiting Winter's astounding victory." She said, believing in her once sister and dear friend.

With a resounding crash, the fire and ice faded away. Claude took Winter by the hand, announcing her victory, and the Vassals looked as if they were about to cheer very loudly when Elise shook her head. "Do not go overboard." She advised quickly. "We want to appear as if the Vassals are a united front or the public may lose faith in us." That did not stop Carter from standing on his chair, cheering loudly at the top of his lungs. It also did not stop Ezra from belting out an even louder yell, just to show off that he could be louder than Carter if he wanted to be. "They never stop." Serenity forced a sort of odd smile. "The boys are always energetic." That was simply how they were, and there was nothing Elise could do to really control them.

"Now its picnic time! Carter, Serenity, get Winter and the firehead and we'll meet you at the gardens!" Ezra picked up Elise, almost forgetting that he had a wheelchair. "Hey, can you put me down?!" Elise yelped, almost humiliated at being lifted as if she were a bowling ball. "Sorry, I just wanted to try it once." Ezra grinned, depositing her back in the wheelchair and leaving, collecting his betting rewards - cakes for the picnic desert from haughty Slithers who were hoping for an easy buck. The crowds were thick, but Ezra managed to push their way through. "Some people just don't pay attention to wheelchairs, really." He rolled his eyes, still grinning but seemed annoyed at how hard it was to push. "Most people are not used to it." Ezra had become more skilled at handling the wheelchair duties for her, but the black eagle hoped her ankle would recover soon so she could walk like everyone else.

Ezra had a trouled expression as they waited for everyone with their picnic basket of salads and bread, designed with the Boundary's unique flavor in mind. "So what happened to Minnie? She suddenly healed up? Brat princess, you noticed too, right?" She nodded, narrowing her eyes. "Sir Ender most likely did something." She said, raising a finger. "He was trying to do something to me before Oliver sent me to PT with Winter. He has not visited me since, so perhaps he changed his plans to Winter after that." What happened? She had no idea, but hopefully it would not hve any drastic life-altering side effects. "Winter tends to be used as a guinea pig often."

"We're here, with the victory girl!" Serenity beamed, bringing everyone else over to join them at the picnic. "Welcome! We're eating a-la boundary today, so get your taste buds ready!" After everyone was settled down on the picnic mat that Ezra chose, with a design of a sword and a flag. Very masculine, just like Ezra to choose this instead of something a little more cute. Not that Elise had any good taste, even now, Claude was the one dressing her, styling her hair, doing her makeup. "Claude, you are here too!" Her eyes lit up excitedly to see Claude cleared to join. "I was given the day off from the sewing factory, hope I'm not intruding!" He scratched at the back of his head, the lone normal hanging out with the Vassals. "So what is this? It looks like some weird salad." Carter poked at it, not realizing Winter was the mastermind behind this confection.

They were gathered now at the picnic, ready to eat. Ezra seemed very proud to present the food, nearly shoving it all in Winter's face so she could get the full force of the nostalgia. "It reminds me of those days." Elise said with a little nod as Winter began to unkowingly cry. They ate quietly, enjoying the food. Once they were finished and compliments were made to the chef who was happy to bask in the attention, Elise noticed it again. Someone had taken a few pictures again. It was a while ago though, so they were gone now. She rolled her eyes, trying not to worry about it. She was a celebrity after all, something like this happening was only to be expected. "Let's hope Oliver gets a better attitude now!" Carter said with jubilance. "After being beaten by Winter, we won't let him live it down!"

Serenity produced a list on her holo then, showing it to Winter. "Here are the movies me and Elise gathered. Do you want to pick a few you want to watch?" There was a good variety of holofilms and Serenity was most definitely excited for the girl talk aspect. What even was girl talk? Elise had never really had it. She may have to do some research later before tonight using the extranet's search engine. "So let's talk business." Carter's face was uncharacteristically serious. "Winter, what's up with you? What happened?" She was healthy now, she did not use a cane and she did not limp. Even the chronic pain from all of her operations and organ changes seemed to be gone now. It was as if Winter was given a whole new body. "I'm sure we all noticed it, right?"

Ezra frowned as Elise wiped some crumbs off of his face. "I mean, I didn't wanna mention it until Winter was ready." One way or another, they all realized that something was up. "Do you need our help again? Are you being made to do something you don't want to?" Claude asked, concern rising as he realized that this was most likely some sort of experiment. "We can have your back if you need it." Elise sipped some tea, feeling a little sick to her stomach after eating the food. The tea only made it worse though, maybe Ezra was not the best at brewing tea. Hiding the nausea, she gave Winter a piercing gaze before she smiled. "Can you tell us what happened?"

Tonight, if all went well, they would be able to enjoy a nice movie night. It had been far too long since Elise had gotten to enjoy good cinema, and she needed to keep watching in order to continue honing her skills as an aspiring actress. Hiding fear and pretending to be strong was one thing, but truly becoming another character was a whole other affair entirely. "Is it weird?" Serenity asked, twiddling her thumbs. "I started to think of us as one big family." She blushed, for some reason embarrassed at having said that aloud. Elise wanted to share some of her sentiments but her stomach was really killing her and the dizziness was coming back. Did she eat too much? She bit her lip, ignoring it. Her stomach was really too delicate, even this boundary food was too hard for her without the luxury of gourmet.

Winter looked up from her plate, Carter questioning her. They were all staring though, they all wanted to know. She swallowed hard, reaching for her water and takin ga long sip. Elise too, gave her a sharp look. As though to ask her if she was already falling back into old patterns, allowing herself to be used. Winter shook her head. "It isn't anything like that... at least, I don't think so." Winter placed her water down, avoiding their gazes. "He didn't say to keep it under wraps either though..." she trailed off, debating on just how much she should tell them. Should she simply come clean? Winter took in a deep breath, "it might take a while to explain." Winter admitted. Yuuki gave her an encouraging thumb's up.

"When I killed Merlin, I accidentally ingested some of his blood," if she was coming clean, she may as well confess to everything. "Not enough to inherit his power, I don't think, but Zuko has since been stuck with me the same way Yuuki is." She drummed her fingers on her thigh, along one of her scars. She was nervous. "Yesterday before dinner, Ender called me to his office." She did not meet their gazes, worrying that they would see her as weak again. "Dr. Lidia and Julian were there too. They said they'd been working on a clinical trial, something that they wanted to offer to me first, since their experiments were successful. They said it could get rid of my pain, that it could fix my leg." She dug her nails into her arm, "but they didn't give me a choice." She would not leave out the fact that she had been forced to accept it.

"Ender said if I wanted to not drag the team down, I had to go through with it. I didn't want to be a liability anymore, so I let them do it." To be fair, Winter had said no multiple times. She had tried to deny them, but they cornered her. "When I woke up, Yuuki told me that it was likely they used monster blood or poison, he said it glowed, like in the Boundary." That was that, that was all of it. Winter was slightly relieved to have confessed everything, but at the same time, she felt the heaviness of her words. Would they judge her? She wasn't sure. Was it a good thing? Winter didn't know that either. Time would tell, "the match today was officially sactioned by Ender and Dr. Lidia, they wanted to see just how effective it was. I have a feeling there's going to be more tests in the future."

Serenity spoke about the movies she had collected. Winter smiled a small smile, she had never had anything like girl's night before. "I'm fine with any of them, just nothing too scary." She wasn't all that hungry anymore. "What? You don't like horror movies?" Carter asked, incredulous. "No Carter, my entire life is a horror movie. I don't like autobiographies," Ezra burst out laughing. Oliver was beginning to rouse from his sleep, looking confused. "It's okay, we'll make your future better." Claude promised with a smile. Winter nodded, appreciative. "Have you heard from your parents at all?" She asked quietly, but Claude shook his head. "No, all of my attempts to contact them have been intercepted."

Winter explained everything to them, the procedure, and who was behind it. It was as Elise feared, but now that it was too late to stop it, all they could do was wait and see. "Let us know if anything feels off, or weird. The more we know, the better we can support you as a team." Carter was being uncharacteristically serious, not even stuttering as he spoke. Everyone had grave expressions on their faces, worry, concern, anxiety. Elise clapped once to get everyone's attention with a light smile, drawing their eyes. "Currently, what matters is that a lot of Winter's pains and suffering related to her body has been healed. She was able to overcome Oliver, and her body proved to be sturdy and reliable. Frankly, this is a miracle." Even the ghost organs that were being grown would not create this drastic an improvement.

"But even so, this was an experiment-" Elise's sharp gaze made Carter fall into silence and she nodded, continuing her statement. "By no means are we to simply accept this, but the fact is, at the moment, the test worked. Winter is doing better than ever." Was it risky? Yes, most definitely. But was it worth that risk? "Sometimes to achieve a medical miracle, you have to take risks. At the moment, we can say that that risk is paying off." She was not telling them to not be wary and alert. But right now, things were looking good for Winter. "So here, a toast for you, Winter." Elise tapped her tea cup against Ezra's glass of soda, clinking the beverages together. They spent the rest of the day touring until Oliver made them go to dinner - making Elise's nausea continue to grow worse - until finally, it was night time.

Serenity grinned, having several classical holofilms in her hands as the three girls sat in the room. They were given permission by Oliver to have a holoset moved into their room for the night. "Just don't make too much noise." Oliver grumbled as he installed the holoset for them. "The others need to sleep after all." He frowned awkwardly as he looked at Winter. Was that shame on his face? Then he turned away, leaving the girls to enjoy their night together. "I was thinking. Winter doesn't have much of a background for movies, so we can start by giving her the basics, something that would fit her personality." Serenity flashed a wide smile as she tapped the chosen holofilm against the holoset, confirming the playback.

"Winter's almost like a precious dainty little lady, so I thought fairy tales would be perfect!" It was a remake of an old classic, Cinderella, playing out on the screen for them. "Ah, I saw this. I heard the lead actress did very well, though there were a few scandals concerning the Director and the male lead." Serenity stared at her in confusion and Elise remembered that the average person would not know much about inner whispers of the film-making industry. "This is a fine pick, I am sure Winter will enjoy it." Nothing too frightening or intense, nice, mild, and pleasant, just like Winter herself was.

A girl's night wouldn't be complete without a little bit of spice, however. As Serenity passed the bowl of popcorn around for the girls to share on the mattress they were laying on, she smiled. "So, El, how are you and Ezra doing?" Elise looked at her, unfazed. "His feelings are quite obvious. I... am not against them, but I do need more time to become comfortable." After what happened with Garrel, there was still some damage that needed to heal, some scars that needed to fade. "And what do you think of Carter? You can't tell me you didn't notice his feelings yet, Minnie!" Elise sighed, having had a feeling Serenity would be happy to spill the beans so quickly.

"If we are all pairing up... you and Oliver, Siri?" An almost cruel smile splayed across her face as she hinted at that. Serenity blinked, then shook her head, suddenly looking bashful. "You see, I do have someone I like." Her face became wistful as the movie continued to play, as the fairy godmother blessed Cinderella with glass slippers and a nice dress for the ball. "That person is strong, responsible, and is always willing to make others smile. They're dependable and never break a promise." That did not sound like Oliver, but rather... "You like Mercedes?" A deep blush appeared on Serenity' face then, and the usually cheerful lavender girl became bashful, almost timid. "But I'm sure... she just thinks of me as a little sister, just a best friend."

Elise was thinking of something else. If there was a chance that Mercedes felt the same way, could they use Serenity to save Mercedes and have her agree to swap sides? One Vassal already died, and Elise did not want any others to fall. There was a reason why they were all chosen, each Vassal had a role to play. It would probably be important to keep them alive, even Oliver, just in case they were needed. Merlin was a lost cause, but with hope, they could find a way to convince Mercedes to betray her family's bloodline.

|| Dear Winter || AJR ||

A miracle, yes, that's what this was. She could walk without pain, her pemanent limp was gone. Winter's existence was not as miserable. Before now, just waking up in the morning and stretching would sometimes make her want to curl up into a ball and cry. Now, she could move freely. She didn't have to worry about being stranded without her cane, she didn't have to look out for sharp corners that she could accidentally bump into. Of course, Winter wasn't so guillable that she thought this would be the end of it. She knew there must have been some sort of reason Ender had insisted on doing this, that they weren't going to keep a keen eye on her now. Would she confront them? Perhaps in the future, but with any luck, the procedure was as safe as she was promised it to be.

She breathed a sigh of relief, Carter wanted to press the issue, but Elise seemed to notice her unease and chalked it up to Winter having an odd lucky streak. Yes, maybe her foul luck was finally changing. After all, most other people's bodies would not be able to handle as much damage and bounce back so easily. They left the conservatory, but not before Ezra doled out celebratory cake. Winter partook in dessert of course, as ti was always the best part of any meal. She smiled to herself as she licked frosting off of her fork, it was the best part of a cake, after all. Next, they finished their tour of the facilities until Oliver insisted that they all go to dinner. He avoided talking to Winter and everytime she looked at him, he would look somewhere else. Was he intimidated by her now? Good.

After dinner, Winter showered and got dressed in her pajamas. She met Serenity and Elise in their room, since her room was much smaller. The mattresses had been pushed together on the floor and the blankets and pillows distributed among the mattress. Winter had brought her blanket as well, the fuzzy one she had bought in the Outlet. "I'm here," she announced with a smile. "I brought snacks too," her pajamas were simple, the ones she had been issued by the Slithers. A white nightgown, which was a bit plain. Hopefully tomorrow Winter would have time to buy some clothing, something that she liked. She plopped down on the mattress, beside Elise.

"Cinderella?" Winter had never seen it, surprise surprise. She didn't get to watch movies very often, even when she had been living with her Grandparents, considering they had lived far from any theaters. Serenity wanted to girl talk. "Ezra told me a while ago he was gonna go after you," Winter said, nibbling on popcorn. Elise wasn't pushing his advances away, which was nice. "He's a lot smarter than you think too." Even if he acted dumb around Elise, Winter knew that Ezra was much smarter than how he acted. Serenity turned to her next, asking about Carter. Winter blinked, "Carter?" She replied dumbly. "Is that why he keeps hanging around me?"

"I haven't exactly had time to think about a relationship," considering she had just been trying to stay alive these last few weeks. "Besides, why would Carter like me? I mean, I'm just... me." She wasn't femanine like Elise. She wasn't beautiful or friendly like Serenity. No, Winter was cold like ice. She was small and sharp. She wasn't pretty, she had no special skills except for music. Why would any boy like her? They were probably just mistaking friendliness for affection. Serenity liked Mercedes? Winter smiled, somehow that didn't come as a surprise. She could already see the cogs turning in Elise's mind, no doubt thinking the same thing Winter was. They could use Serenity to bribe Mercedes to come to their side.

Serenity and Elise, both more vain than Winter, made sure to have something more than just a plain white nightgown to wear. Serenity had bought a sunny yellow nigthgown that revealed her shoulders, and Elise had a custom-made sleek black one made by her brother, with frills on the hem of the dress by the bottom. Naturally, since everything she wore now was designed by Claude, she was sporting the black wing emblem on her nightgown as well to represent her family. "Welcome to our humble abode!" Serenity greeted Winter cheerfully. She was able to walk, back straight, without any hindrances. While obviously there would be a catch, that was no reason to not celebrate the happy occasion. "Snacks are always good!" Elise would eat a little out of politeness, but she did not want to make her stomach rebel more. Today was particularly bad for her.

"Yeah, Cinderella! That's the name of the main girl, and she reminds me of you, Winter." Serenty sported a friendly smile as she turned the film on, settling back down on the mattress with excited childish glee. Winter had little experience with this kind of media, so there was a good chance it would come as a plesant surprise for her. As the film continued, Serenity obviously turned the topic to romance, targeting Elise and Ezra first. "I had a feeling he would confer with you first." She replied to Winter with a helpless shrug. "He has been respectful so far, so there is no reason to refuse." How did she feel? She was not sure, but she knew it was not love just yet. Still, that did not mean she did not somewhat enjoy being courted. Ezra was very different from the other suitors she has had try to claim her. Garrel was only one noble who wanted her hand in marriage.

Winter seemed a lot more reluctant to realize Carter may like her. Someone like Winter probably never had any positiive reinforcement to help her realize that she too, was pretty, both inside and out. "He said so himself, though he made us promise not to say." Elise narrowed her eyes at Serenity, who, based on her giggle, did not feel guiilty in the slightest. It was clear she wanted to spark romance. Was it for team building, or did she simply want to help everyone find happiness? Elise was not sure, Serenity was sometimes quite the mystery. "Sometimes the prettiest flower does not realize just how fetching she is." Serenity said with a fake wise expression, nodding sagely. "You have big eyes, nice light colored hair, a good subtle figure." Elise decided to lay a few compliments on Winter, but they were compliments that were obviously true. Lying would not be helpful here. "And your personality is enough to inspire anyone to at least respect you, so love is not unimaginable." Had Elise been more experimental with attraction, perhaps she might have even liked Winter.

She was straight as a fiddle, for good or for ill.

Serenity revealed her affections for Mercedes, looking a lot more feminine with that blush that covered her cheeks up to her ears. She was squirming as Elise and Winter looked at her, both clearly evaluating what this meant. This was good news, this meant there was more of a chance to save Mercedes so that she would not have to die. "I support it. This is far past the old years, same gender relationships are very common." Only the most conservative of person would say anything against two girls or two boys having love spark between them. "B-but, please don't think I'm not loyal to the cause! I love her, I do... but I joined you because this was what I thought was right." They must have had an argument the day they parted ways, when Serenity joined Carter to the noble compound while Mercedes remained with the Chrysanthemum.

The film ended, and the princess and prince lived happily ever after. "Did you like it?" Elise asked, eating a little more of the snacks Winter brought, hoping she would not get sick. "These are called fairytales. There are a few more, I think we have time for one more before we sleep." Serenity held some up for Winter to choose from. "This one's Mulan, this one's the Beauty and the Beast, another one is Moana, and this last one is the Frozen trilogy!" Elise sighed, shaking her head. "Not the last one, that would take us all night to finish." They still needed to sleep at some time after all.

"I'm glad Ezra is respecting your boundaries," he was of the wild variety. Still, Elise could use someone like Ezra. Someone to teach her how to have fun, someone who could teach her that the rules were meant to be bent sometimes and even broken. Winter hugged a pillow against her chest, "When this whole thing is over, I'm sure he'll ask you out for real." Cinderella, the maid servant, had just received a pair of glass slippers. "That's impractical," Winter rolled her eyes. How could anyone dance if their slippers were made of glass? Winter wondered. Then again, her spirit armor shoes were made out of ice. Winter narrowed her eyes, wondering if that was why they had chosen this movie. She glanced between the two of them, Serenity giggling as though she had been found out. Winter sighed, laying down on her stomach, the pillow under her chest.

Carter? Liking her? Winter shook her head. He had been one of the ones to vote to cut her up, how could he ever like her? Besides, he had also beaten her up that one time outside of the Opal, before WInter had found a reason to get stronger. Elise and Serenity were laying the compliments on thick, but Winter couldn't exactly see through the same rose-colored glasses. Her eyes were a unique color, but as a child, she was frequently taunted for it. She was skinny, yes, but she had the same shape as a twelve year old boy. How could anyone find that attractive? "I'm not good with people," Winter admitted, picking at invisible lint on her nightgown. "I never had a lot of friends and even when I did, I was an easy target. They hung out with me because they thought they could get something from me."

She drummed her fingers against the mattress. "That's why I chose music. It wasn't hard to figure out, it came easily to me. I prefered instruments to people and when I played, well, people actually liked me." It had taken a while for Winter to realize that they hadn't liked her, they had envied her. Music came so easily to her, playing an isntrument was like breathing. Her old friends were jealous. They too, had been in the music program and looking back, Winter had let them walk all over her. To someone like Elise, love may have not been unimaginable, but to someone like Winter, it was far fetched. A fairytale. After all, in the real world, there were no happy endings. Winter knew enough about them to know.

Serenity liked Mercedes, although Winter could have taken a guess at that one with both eyes closed. "We know you're loyal Siri, now we just have to work on converting Mercedes." Winter sat upright once more, the movie suddenly ending. That was it? Just a wedding? No revenge against the people that had hurt Cinderella her entire life? No bringing down an entire government? "I guess Mulan," Winter chose, wondering why she had been afraid of these people before. Serenity and Mercedes had terrified Winter the first time she had met them. Granted, they had kidnapped her the second time so perhaps she simply had the foresight to know that they were dangerous.

Elise too, had intimidated her. Even locked up in her room, she had reminded Winter of a caged elf with her high cheek bones and piercing gaze. Winter did not compare to either of them.
