Quiet. Peaceful. That was what this town was. What the street was. Everything seemed to silence while the birds were singing, and meld into the backround. There was a small white house, adjacent to the other side of the neighborhood. At the end of the road. It was by far the simplest house on the street. Atop a single square patch of green grass, that seemed overly lush. A wrap around porch, coiled tightly around the house. There didn't seem to be anybody in it at the moment. Windows, window upon window seemed to be cut into the house's sides, and roof top. Apparently the people inside liked showing off their primitave style. Well, I lied. The porch was being occupied, the front one that is, with Leslie Malcom. She swung back and forth on the porch swing they had installed just a few months prior after she had begged for, for as long as she could remember. Other kids wanted electronics, video games, etc. Leslie just wanted a porch swing. Hell yeah. The wind whistled down the street, and if there had been a tumble weed that just so happened to be riding with the wind, nobody would have thought it was unusual, because it was perfectly placed.
It was an odd angle to sit, she was half on the swing, half off of it. Sort of sitting, and lounging at the same time. Her feet carefully tucked beneath her, and of course her nose was in a book. Leslie had always been a book worm, since the beginning of time. But the thing was, she wasn't the usual type of bookworm. She still did other things, sports, and her studies were important to her. But every other minute of every day books were what she filled her free time with. Romance novels, biographies, fantasy.. Anything that she was craving. A hand raised, almost instinctually to brush a lock of hair from her gaze as she kept her eyes on the pages of his story. The hero in the book. She was so intent, as she gazed at the words that spread themselves, and painted the story of Theseus. It was a great story.. One of the best she had ever read. When he ran from the Minotaur, through the maze and was finally saved by the beautiful princess.. But she grew bored of it. Closing the book shut with a quiet thump, she picked up the one that lay beside her, she hadn't read it in a while, so she'd read it again. That was just the way that Leslie worked.
The book. Wasn't all that special. Another alternate world reality. But it was another of her favorites, straying away from Greek mythology to that of the mind of someone else. Completely serious, yet still... Eccentric in a way. Hesitating, Leslie opened it, the cover creaked gently, still slightly new. The pages fluttered in the soft summer breeze that shifted around her, ruffling her mane of dark hair that flew free around her shoulders, still slightly damp from when she'd jumped into the pond in the back of their house. Shrugging her shoulders agreeably enough, she began to read, the words flowing off of the page into her mind, ricocheting around it for a moment, before being totally absorbed.
He breathed slowly, carefully at first. His eyes darting quickly through the forest. There was something after them. Something supernatural of course..
Cliche, was the word she had in her mind. Of course something was chasing him in a jungle. And of course, the hero would win in the end, slaying the monster. What if there was a book out there that had a tragic ending, with the monster winning and the hero losing for once. There were probably hundreds out there, she just wasn't looking hard enough. But her mind wandered, and she began to think about a world, if she could write her own novel she'd put her world in it. A world full of creatures she couldn't comprehend.. An elephant the size of a dog. And a dog the size of an elepha--..Nahhh. Something even better. Maybe.. A world made of nothing but air, air that could breathe and think for itself, while.. She didn't know. There were a million possibilities that rose and fell throughout her giant, and easily distracted mind. But the one idea that stuck out to her the most.. Doors. There were so many possibilities behind doors. You could open a door, and anything could come at you. A bedroom, a closet. Monsters. She snickered and shook her head, her shoulders hunched over as it grew just a bit colder. The wind had started to pick up after the sun dipped low on the horizon. It would be night soon, and she could already see a few stars winking and twinkling in the sky. She sat up, her legs swinging off of the swing and near the ground before she leaned back and settled. What she would give to get out of this town and into the real world.. Anything.
Be careful what you wish for.
