Oh, and....Quantumlegacy, since you seem to know what's going on....can you tell me what happened in the end? I think I....kind of know.

Alan was trapped underneath the lake the whole time, writing the story, a second doppelganger of himself was out living his story, doing whatever he wrote. Did he...create the story? Do you play as the doppelganger? I'm just a bit confused on the ending. xDD

. In this version of the story he simply gave up on finding Alice so he went back home. This is an entirely different storyline, in this he never started the Manuscript and he left Alice, but now hes coming back. This isnt really a sequal but more of a different take on the story

You guys realize that it isn't a doppelganger right? The story doesn't take place as he's writing. He wrote it while possessed by the darkness and then lived it out afterwords. Otherwise he couldn't be finding the manuscript as he goes through the story. Not to mention that cop had most of the manuscript at once and it detailed things that hadn't happened yet. Such as when he got pulled out of the jail by the darkness. So its not that he's a doppelganger. Its that he already wrote it and doesn't remember until the end.

Yeah from what I got from the game he wrote the story while possessed from the darkness in then in a desperate attempt to beat the darkness, after he figured out what's going on, wrote himself into. When you beat the game you see these things and can tell the fake world he's written for you is crumbling.

Pretty much what Vain said. I'm still interested in how this is going to play out though.
