"One never reaches home, but wherever friendly paths intersect the whole world looks like home for a time." - Hermann Hesse
Founded by the daiyōkai, Yoshirō. The yakuza came into being when the man dreamed of a better life. Having lived for years—too many to count—he became weary of the bloodshed and violence that defined his life. He was tired of seeing those he served, who served him, fall to the blades of others without ever knowing peace. Of course, there were those under his command who lived for war, such as one particular Oni who was his best friend. He remembers the man fondly, and it is mainly in his memory that Yoshirō decided to leave the life of war. He discarded his previous identity and became Fujiwara Yoshirō, a man of humble origins and firm believer in second chances. He gave hope to vagabonds, homes to the rōnin, and life to those who were tired. He fed the poor, clothed the forsaken, and was revered as one does a God, but he was no God. Even Yoshirō knew better than to accept these as truths for even he feared the wrath of the Gods. He, however, trained these poor fools to become warriors, and if needed be, spies. But most of all, he gave them purpose.
Eventually, his family grew too large, and he needed a place for them to call home. It was here, in Edo, that Yoshirō saw potential in the barren village. He took it, cultivated it, and managed to breath life into the place. It is here where they gained the name, Ninkyō Dantai. They were generous, giving, and in time, became associated with the uniforms they wore. It was easy to tell who was a part of the Yakuza, and who the top members were. The lower members were characterized by light blue hakama's, trimmed in white around the sleeves and bottom. The ones of higher rank—and there are only two of them—were adorned in the opposite coloration. Even after establishing themselves in Edo, reviving the village to become a metropolis of sorts, people still sought to join them—and Yoshirō welcomed them with open arms. He turned no one away, however; not all who joined were with the best of intentions. There were those who sought to bring Yoshirō down, afraid of the power he had been accruing over the years.
With such fame and glory, came defiance and those who sought to destroy the Yakuza. Yoshirō managed for years to keep the armies at bay not only with his own small army, but with the support of the peasants and others who believed in them. It wasn't until Sakuya, a former member of Yoshirō's family, schemed against the Yakuza, and plotted their downfall. Kurogane Sakuya wanted Edo as the base for her army, seeing it as the perfect opportunity to seize power and march against Yoshirō, however; Yoshirō himself, was a major obstacle to her plans. She began spreading rumors of the Yakuza, telling tales of the disgraceful deeds, the murders and rapes, all committed by the Yakuza. In order for these to bear some truth, Sakuya commanded several rōnin to carry out the deeds in the name of the Yakuza.
They began falling from favor.
Yoshirō did everything he could to preserve the name of his clan, and to this day, still remains a threat to Kurogane. It is only until he is removed from power, can Sakuya finally seize her own power, to write her destiny in the blood of those who serve her. The Yakuza are no longer seen as good and humble, and there are those within the clan who desire to fulfill Sakuya's desire for a handsome reward. There are few within the clan whom Yoshirō trusts, and even fewer who know the truth behind the lies. There is chaos and discord within the family, but Yoshirō has not given up on them, and desires to rebuild the Yakuza into something better. In order to do that, though, he must pull his estranged family together, and unite them against the common enemy. He will need alliances and there are few within his clan who know exactly who to align with.
