Day 401
‘It seems to be a success. Through many trials of error, we have finally been able to complete the complex programming for #0019. Now it is time to create the body, which in its self will be a challenging thing to accomplish. Unlike the other AI’s, this one will truly ‘live’ up to the name Artificial Intelligence. All human like traits are programmed and a learning mechanism have been established. He will learn just like any human child does. The main goal of this experiment, besides advancement, is to see if the AI can look past logic and calculations, to broaden its own programming and actually feel the emotions that have been given to him. Will he yearn? Will he feel the sadness of tragedy or the jubilation of excitement? Will he truly experience the emotion of love? Ah, love. Such an illogical human emotion. He has been programmed to feel it, but can he really love? That would be the greatest accomplishment if #0019 managed it. So many questions and possibilities! I have high hopes for this project. Only time will tell.’
Day 937
‘Success! There had been a few minor set backs, but the body has now been completed! We will be giving him a few trial runs beginning tomorrow and debug any errors that arise. We have managed to agree that the user interface would be that of a twenty-four year old male. #0019’s mind will be that of a child when we start him, but he will grow. Each new day he will be introduced to a different learning challenge presented to humans. Most things will probably revolve around object classification, matching, and other logical issues. Being an AI those should be accomplished quickly with only minimal instruction.
Day 1437
‘The first phase has taken a little longer, but now #0019 can be brought out of the lab and into the world of humans. His programs are functioning to their max and his mentality is now level with his visual age. He has classified objects, animals, and it is safe to say he has learned as much as a human. Granted it has been a short time since he has been first activated, but his learning capability is increasingly fast. So far, it is safe to say that the experiment is well on its way to becoming a great advancement above all the other models. Granted, his mind tends to revert back to a child’s wonder when met with something new to him. For the most part, he acts human and can pass as one. Now the experiment really begins. We will monitor everything he does. His ‘job’ as a human will be returning to the lab every day so we may watch his memory files and apply his programming.
Jace had been put to sleep that night and as always, it had been a dreamless one. He didn’t even know what dreams were. He just closed his eyes and went into sleep mode. Everything went black then. Noises in the background where just little lulls to him. He would only wake when his creators would call his name or tell him to wake up. It only seemed like an instant, but it was always hours later. Sometimes, they let him sleep for a whole day if not more. They never gave him a schedule to follow.
“#0019, wake up,” he heard in the distance. It was almost like a light switch had turned on in the dark. His breathing picked up and his eyes flickered open to revel the blue eyes he had been given. If one looked close enough, they could see the numbers and codes that passed across them. It had been covered up as much as possible. He was supposed to be as humanlike as possible and he would fulfill that mission. He had to. He didn’t want to be turned off. Life was such a precious thing and one so easily terminated. What was that emotion called? Fear? Dread? He couldn’t really see the difference between the two.
Jace lifted up his face towards his creator and gave a smile. His dirty blond hair fell across his face and grazed his procaine like cheek. His physique really was that of a doll like all the other AIs. They were supposed to perfect in every aspect to increase the master’s satisfaction and desires. They had every single type of skin tone that humans had. Jace’s own skin was a creamy white and like all of his kind; there was no blemish to distract from his looks. It was no surprise that many human often would rather spend time with their gorgeous AIs than other humans. AIs were designed to make the user happy no matter the cost to themselves; a trait humans didn’t share.
“Good morning Sir,” Jace answered politely. His voice had caused a few problems during the initial design, but at last his creators had managed to make it sound human perfectly. No mechanical hint could be heard as he spoke.
The man nodded to him and unplugged him from the power outlet and watched it retract back into its port behind Jace’s ear. Instantly, the hole was covered up with a patch of artificial skin and hair. Then the man looked down at some of the notes he had brought with him and did a manual check to make sure Jace was still working properly. Once everything had been checked and there was nothing to adjust, the man straightened and ruffled Jace’s hair.
“You will be going outside today #0019. I won’t be accompanying you, nor will anyone else on the team. Just you. You can explore and walk around. Don’t stay in only one area. Walk around as long as you please. I want you home tonight at nine the latest. We will be doing our standard check up then before you go back to sleep. This is your first trail run. Act your age,” he informed before he pulled Jace up to his feet.
Jace’s eyes widened and his smile brightened. He was going outside for the first time! He had seen so many things on the television about the world outside the lab and he didn’t think he would ever be able to see it for himself since he was a prototype. He was given a chance to prove his worth. He started to walk forward towards the door before he turned on his heels and hugged his creator tightly once and ran to the door before he could be called back to explain the hug. He couldn’t really explain it himself. All he knew was that he was happy and it was a good emotion. He liked being happy.
The first thing that struck Jace, was sunlight. It was so bright! He had to squint at first before his eyes adjusted to it. He laughed like any child would and ran down the street. For a moment, he was free. He could pretend that he belonged to the world of humans. No one would check on him, pull his wires or invade his memory. He could really be human if only for a few hours. He didn’t know what the future ahead held for him, but he wouldn’t think about it. He would take every day as it came. Hopefully his masters wouldn’t turn him off after he had finished his task.
People around him avoided him as much as possible as he ran through the streets but soon, Jace stopped his aimless speed and slowed to a walk. He watched as the other people scurried about. Sometimes he would see people talking to others like him or other humans. He wondered if those AIs had a task similar to his own. They were different, yet they were all the same at the core. If they didn’t, what kind of task were they set up to? The people that were with them, were they creators or users? So many questions!
Some people walked around him or shoved him out of their way. There were so many sounds and smells in the air. It was hard to keep track of one. Cars were honking, people were chatting or arguing, shoes made clicks on the grounds, and bags were being opened or closed. He could smell dogs, perfumes, food, and so many things. It was beginning to become a sensory overload! He hadn’t expected everything to come at him all at once. He wasn’t used to this. All he knew was the quiet lab he had lived in for his whole life! He closed his eyes, hoping to block off some of the things that were grabbing his attention. Even his emotions were running wild. Maybe he wasn’t ready to be human.
Something around his heart seemed to swell. He was sad. He wanted to cry. He didn’t have a place in the world. He was just a prototype, and one that couldn’t work. His creator would put him to sleep forever and create a new AI to take his place. He didn’t want that to happen. He was… desperate. That’s the emotion. He was desperate to belong. He wanted to do what he was asked. Jace managed to sit down in a chair and rest his head on the table. He didn’t like this feeling or the thoughts that came with it. He didn’t want to feel this. How was he supposed to get rid of it on his own?
