Magic exists as a constant, elemental "force" in the world of Aevon, and while magic users may be extremely powerful, magic itself is not particularly rare or unique. It is not uncommon to see those with an Earth Blessing using their abilities to repair a crumbling stone wall, Fire adepts using a burning finger to light a stove or pipe, or Spirit users to communicate through telepathy alone. Magic is a fundamental part of craftsmanship, sport, art, war, culture, social order, and even sex appeal, and every living sentient being is capable of all forms magic in one way or another.
There are several tenants of magic--mechanical laws by which magic exists and abides by:
+ Magic is present only as elemental "force." However, people often utilize this force through a variety of coping mechanisms--i.e. some might use "spells," while others may prefer "conjuration" or "channeling."
+ Magic is beyond morality, and all forms are accepted as natural parts of life.
+ Magic has no limits beyond an individuals capacity. Exerting and exceeding this capacity is similar to acts of physical and mental stress.
+ Any sentient individual has the capacity for all magic. However, one element and its application in particular is significantly more easily developed than any others in each individual--this is called a Blessing. Very, very exceptional people may gain strength in two Blessings as their life progresses.
+ Any magic, with the exception of Void magic, may be used destructively, constructively, as a utility of some sort, or as a means of healing. Void magic may only be used to negate or resist magic.
The elements are in turn divided into three categories: Natural, Divine, and Profane. Despite the names, there is no particular moral or cultural association with any category.
Natural elements define magic that form and are present in the natural environment. Mastery and growth in these elements is gained through emotional maturity, passionate response, and connection to a particular element or natural "force."
- Air: Control over and sense of air, wind, and lightning
- Fire: Control over and resistance to fire and heat/cold (positively)
- Earth: Control over and sense of soil, stone, and metal
- Water: Control, sense, and resistance to water, cold/heat (negatively), and ice
Divine Elements encompass magic that is present in the natural environment, but must be formed through outside means. Mastery and growth in these elements is gained through spiritual devotion of some sort and personal reflection.
- Light: Manipulation and creation of light
- Dark(ness): Manipulation and creation of darkness
Profane elements cover magic that is neither normally present nor formed in the natural environment. Control over the element grows and decays naturally with the individual's own capacity.
- Void: Antimagic, the resistance to magic, and the sense of all magic
- Spirit: Social magic that includes telepathy, healing, mind-control, etc.
