Between 1945 and 1962 the United States conducted 331 atmospheric nuclear test. Today, the government still denies the genetic effects caused by the radioactive fallout...

It all started about a week ago. Nikolaevich, being herself, wanted to go on a vacation with her four best friends. Niko loved vacationing, especially to places most often referred to as 'the middle of nowhere.' The desert in a little camper seemed like a bright idea to Niko. Although, she wasn't really all that bright come to think of it. Scorching hot weather, no people for miles, and a tiny camper that had Twinkies hiding under the sofa cushions. Sugar probably wasn't the best thing to bring, but when the five of them would get bored they'd need something.

Niko also equipped this piece of crap camper with cigars, alcohol, cigarettes, internet, phones, and air conditioning. Stuff for a bonfire. She pretty much thought of anything. Last thing she wanted as Santo raging that he didn't have anything to smoke or drink. Then they'd have to just go back home and that wouldn't be any fun. This vacation was supposed to connect the five of them, make them realize what good friends they were to each other. Niko sighed, flipping her hair. She sat down on one of the seats, propping her feet up on the table in front of her. It was going to be a long trip. She could feel it in the air.

This wasn't Poppy's first choice of activity. Then again, it probably wasn't anyone else's, bar the organiser of this trip. But how would she know? Poppy hardly talked to anyone, even her close friends, so she hardly knew their personalities, never mind how they felt about this trip. How she was still friends with these people considering that, Poppy didn't know. What she did know, however, was that she was likely to be left alone. Which was good. She actually didn't mind being ignored - in fact, she often went out of her way to make sure that happened, choosing clothes to wear that would draw as little attention to her as possible (hoodies she could retreat into, dark colours) etc.

That was what she was doing now. Hiding, that is. Despite the fact that she was overheating in this camper, Poppy was sitting in the corner, hood in regular up position and legs tucked in front of her. She'd been like that for some time now, just hiding away in her own little world of shyness, without caring what was going on around her. For all she knew, they could have gone wildly off course and ended up stranded somewhere. Actually, from what she'd picked up from her friends, that could probably happen... depended on who was driving. Poppy would have spoken up to ask, but no. She didn't feel confident enough right now. So she would just stay sitting here. Ignored.

Surprisingly, Kyro hadn't had to beg to go on this trip with his friends. His guardian had said yes, probably because there were five of them going which meant they'd probably be safe and she didn't expect someone as innocent as Kyro to get up to anything bad; being almost fifteen years of age but looking about ten or eleven years of age had it perks and made most people think he could do no wrong. How wrong they were.

He wasn't 'bad' as such, just easily influenced due to his lack of intelligence and lack of self-awareness and would pretty much do anything his friends did simply because they did it. Not that he knew everything his friends did wasn't right, but even if they did get caught with alcohol and cigars, he figured he wouldn't get blamed for it. Besides, he wasn't even smoking the cigars, they smelled and tasted horrible to him, though alcohol was another thing altogether. While he didn't particularly like the taste, he liked the feeling and got drunk quickly, being a light-weight. This meant he didn't have to drink a lot to get drunk and he didn't like feeling so drunk that he couldn't get up, just so much that the world seemed like an even better place than usual - the slight dizzy feeling was also a nice addition to this.

Looking out of the window at the barren landscape, Kyro was looking for some form of life. The heat was making him a bit drowsy though he was determined not to fall asleep. If he fell asleep, he wouldn't be the first person to see someone out here. Kyro was expecting to see camels and eagles and vultures but so far he'd seen no camels, eagles or vultures. Sighing, he turned around to take a break from gazing out of the window at the sun-dried earth and saw the ice-cream he'd brought had melted.
"Aw, my ice-cream melted," he muttered, lower lip sticking out in a child-like fashion, completely disregarding the fact that they were in a desert and ice-cream wasn't going to stay frozen just because he wanted it to.

It was pretty fun, right up in the front, pressing hard on the gas pedal, going about 120mph down the lonesome highroad, cutting through the air and murdering any insects that dared to get close to the camper. Ara actually didn't have her hands on the wheel, leaning back into the driver's chair and holding her foot down on the gas pedal. The girl had opened the driver's window, letting the air flood in and cool her down. Well, it was a sticky, hot wind, due to being in the boiling hot desert, kicking stray sand up from the wheels of the camper, said sand blowing behind the car as it soared down the road. It was freedom, driving this fast, billowing down a road that had been abandoned, never seeing a car for god knows how long.

Ara sat forward, leaning against the wheel, not caring if she accidentally made the camper sway and jeer about for a few moments. Her dark brown eyes were showing a sign of boredom; she was goign to have to ask someone else to take over soon so she could rest, get a drink, get something to eat, do whatever, just get out of this front seat and go relax. The road was starting to make her sick.

"Y'know, Ara, you're being kinda reckless weet` de driving. Why don't you let me `ave a turn?"

Santo, who'd just been flopped on one of the sofa cushions a few seconds ago, suddenly appeared next to Ara and grabbed the steering wheel, causing the camper to swerve in a random direction. Ah, travelling. Santo loved travelling. There was nothing in this world he would rather have been doing with his summer than sit in a small, grubby camper van which was most likely second hand with a maniac for a driver and no kind of air conditioning. Well, actually, he hated travelling. Hated it with a passion. He'd actually made plans to spend the whole summer holidays sleeping, but with a very persistent friend arranging the trip and guardians desperate to get rid of him for a few weeks, he really didn't have much say in the matter. About two hours into the journey, one would think that Santo would be bored out of his mind and bloody well letting everybody know of it, but he'd actually never been more content than his life. He'd spent most of the time entertaining himself by simply staring at the random swirling colours on the ceiling, but even that had gotten slightly boring after a while and he really wanted a turn at driving. Ara was making it seem so fun.

Niko heard voices. She felt bad. Ara had driven most of the way and now Santo was acting crazy. She shook her head and laughed, tossing her hair behind her as she looked at her friends. She sighed and walked up to the steering wheel. She could tell Ara needed a break. "Let Santo drive, it won't kill him," she said with ease. She knew Santo would get them killed or deserted somewhere but that was all part of being his friend. A new adventure anytime you're around him.

After doing driving arrangements she walked towards Kyro, smiling at him. "Hey," she said. Niko generally got along with everyone, often the mediator in situations but it wasn't a job she didn't like. Her four friends were her life line and her meaning for her existence. Her parents were hardly ever home and her sister hated Niko with a burning passion. She could have left her family forever and they never noticed. Oh well. I'm with the greatest people ever, she thought.

Noticing Kyro's ice cream melted she laughed a little. "There's always more. It seems I got an endless supply of everything," she said. In reality, she had jacked her fridge, her parents fridge, and her parent's stash of drugs, liquor and pipe collection. Her family had money for those things, but she didn't know how bored her friends would honestly get on this trip. She thought about Santo and how he wanted to sleep, so she made accommodations for him to be able to. She practically begged him to go on this trip. Sighing, she finally began to relax. Things would be fine. Right? Right.

Hearing that Santo was going to take the wheel, Kyro automatically gripped his seat just before the decrepit camper van made a violent swerve in a seemingly random direction. Well, it was definitely made clear that Santo wanted to drive. Kyro didn't particularly want to die, but what could they crash into in the middle of nowhere? Short of crashing into a ditch or hitting a cactus or some tumbleweed, no-one was going to get hurt since there was no-one out here as far as he could tell. Meh, there was nothing he could do about it anyway, if Santo wanted to drive he'd probably drive and while they probably wouldn't stay on the road very long, it didn't really matter since there wasn't much out here except sand, sun and... cacti. What an interesting place to be.

Letting go of the death grip he had on his seat, Kyro looked at Niko as she spoke to him. He sort of thought of her as the leader as she was always planning stuff and her trips never failed to lack amusement. Something crazy always happened on them as far as Kyro could tell, whether it be good or bad, but on one of Niko's trips, you could pretty much guarantee that you weren't going to end up anywhere normal or near civilization.
"Hi," he replied, smiling, not looking as dismayed about the melted ice-cream. His face lit up like a child who'd just been told they were going to live in Disneyland when he was told there was more ice-cream.

"Really? Endless supply of everything?" Kyro asked, wondering if that was a bad thing as well as a good thing. It meant a lot of ice-cream, but it also meant a lot of drugs... he didn't have a problem with his friends taking drugs, that was their problem, but when they were driving and on drugs there was always the possibility of something bad happening and Kyro couldn't help but feel slightly worried.
"We're gonna end up in a ditch or crashing into some people riding camels through the desert," he said, half-joking... then a thought occured to him. Were there any people who went riding camels in the desert? He turned around and got on his knees on the seat to look out of the window to see if there were any people on camels. Nope... just more desert. Oh well, something was bound to happen soon, it always did.

Ara made a strange, shocked squeaking sound when Santo suddenly appeared, and then the little Italian taking control of the wheel. She was stunned, for the mere moments while they swerved, and then the woman sighed. "Drivin'? Peh, fine. You're free to take over, I was ready to hurl all over the road from carsickness," She stated, moving the boy out of the way to get out of the drivers seat, to let her friend take over. She felt like she just signed a death wish, letting the eccentric but so damn grouchy Italian take the wheel, but in all honesty. Ara didn't care. Kyro could've taken the stance and she wouldn't minded. The road... oh god, the road. That's what she hated about travelling, even in such a remote, sweet place like the desert. And it wasn't out of the country too... oh, she hated overseas travelling. She hated alot of things, yet still loved alot.

"Take your sweet time with driving, Santo. I'm in no rush to take over anytime soon." She called back, when walking back into the camper part of the van, dropping down onto one of the few couches in the camper van, leaning back to lounge. Time to relax, yes?

Santo was too high happy to really be surprised at how Ara gave in so quickly. Most people would have taken one look at him and said something along the lines of, “...No. Now sit down and shut up like a good boy.”. So, without hesitation, he plonked himself on the driver's seat and tried to work out how the hell to drive this thing. It's a shame that he'd never actually been in a car before, and in this state of mind he couldn't even distinguish the simplest of the...Gadget things such as the gears and breaks. As the car began to slow, he made up his mind and pulled some random lever, causing the camper to lurch forward, almost right off the road which was barely a road anyway. Almost by instinct, he grabbed the steering wheel and made a very sharp turn so anybody that was stupid enough to be standing up right now rather than clinging onto something for dear life had probably slammed into a wall. After just a few most likely terrifying minutes of several more sharp turns and constant changing of gears and laughing as if endangering his best friends' lives was the most hilarious thing on earth, he decided that this was getting a little dull and stood up as if he expected the camper to start driving itself which, to be honest, he kind of did.

“I'm bored of t `ees t`eeng. You can drive, Kyro,” he stumbled a little after saying this and had to grab onto the seat to stay on his feet, probably something to do with the fact that nobody was driving the camper. Meh, it was better than Santo driving it. Shrugging, he then staggered to one of the sofa cushions and collapsed onto it, only needing a can of beer to crack open to look like the typical lazy guy who doesn't give two shits.

Poppy gave a small scream as the van swerved, as she had been thrown out of her corner and staright onto the floor. Glancing around, she was slightly annoyed that no-one else had fallen over. Kyro, she noticed, was clutching his seat so hard his knuckles were turning white. Huh. She should have thought of that... oh, that made her feel great. The 'dense kid' had been smarter than her. Shaking slightly, Poppy pushed herself up, shaking slightly, but another sharp turn sent her straight back onto the floor again, banging her elbow as she did so. "Ah!" Biting her lip - she would not cry, not in front of these guys. Poppy still didn't feel comfortable around these people, despite the fact they were meant to be her best friends. Well, it was her own fault really - she was the quiet one, the one who hid away. But would it kill someone to actually talk to her? Or - shock, horror - be nice to her? Okay, stupid question. Everyone was nice enough, but Poppy didn't feel... well, included.

Another sharp turn, and this time Poppy had the sense to scramble up and cling onto the arm of the sofa for dear life. Squeezing her eyes shut and biting her lip, she clung on like that until Santo decided he was bored. "T-thank god..." she whimpered, going to move, but found herself frozen to the spot. Just as well, really - the camper was pretty much driving itself and it wasn';t a very good driver. She managed to shift her position though. Maybe she could just crawl over the arm and land on the sofa... then she could at least cling onto that and be a little more comfortable. Poppy lifted herself up and got one arm over... which was when Santo came and sat down.

"Um, S-Santo... you're s-sitting on my a-arm... "
