Finding Good Byzantine Empire Artwork

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby almostinsane on Mon May 25, 2015 12:26 pm

So, I'm a bit of a history nerd. I love playing games like Crusader Kings II and stuff and recently, I've become fascinated with the Byzantine Empire. I want to create a roleplay taking place in Constantinople circa 1025 AD. The only problem is I can't find any good artwork of the Byzantines or Constantinople before the Turks took it. Does anyone know where I could find good artwork for a roleplay like this?

It depends on what you're looking for. You might find the illuminated manuscripts of particular interest. Take a look at the Skylitzes Chronicle, which includes arguably the most famous piece of Byzantine artwork I know of: an illustration of Greek fire. Much of Byzantine art was religious though, so outside of Orthodox Christian texts, it would be more difficult to find art pieces in literature. Unfortunately, I know little other than the fact that medieval Christian architecture was extremely colorful, and if you take a look at Russian or (especially) Armenian churches today, you may find that their artwork developed from the Byzantines'.

I'm hoping to get Crusader Kings II sooner or later. It's a game I've already played a few times, and while I'm not a big fan of all the menus, scheming and plotting intrigues while ruling a nation is extremely entertaining.
