Shadows of the ruined buildings of New York City stretched long in dim afternoon sunlight. Not all of them were stationary, however. One darted into an alley, and Quell Yomotashi was right behind it.
Quell rounded the corner, but the thing had disappeared. The alley was narrow and fringed with rusted fire escapes that tapered off where the destroyed buildings had collapsed. As the sound of scraping claws echoed down the alley, Quell bolted forward. He came quickly to a tall wooden fence. As he neared, he leaped into the air, grasped the rim of the wooden planks, and lifted his feet over.
As Quell landed, a black leathery tail disappeared around the next corner. But beyond there, Quell knew, there was nowhere to hide. The thing he hunted would be out in the open. His feet hit the pavement heavily as he ran, and as he rounded the corner he exited out onto an empty street. Quell slowed to a mild pace as he scanned the area. Where was that thing?
A soft, nearly inaudible hiss sounded from behind Quell, and he spun just as the creature leaped at him from the painted wall of the apartment building. It resembled a miniature, wingless dragon with its thin, wiry shape, snake-like neck, and triangular head. As it sailed through the air, it opened wide its jaws, revealing rows of needle-like fangs. It extended its cat-like claws.
Quell reached to his belt and pulled out the katana sheathed there and in the same fluid motion swept it in a wide arc in front of him. The blade passed through the creature's neck as if it were no more than jelly, spraying purplish blood in all directions. Quell ducked and rolled forward on his left shoulder, allowing the pieces of the demonic beast fly over him and avoiding any blood splatters. He rolled directly back up onto his feet and sheathed his weapon, then turned around to admire his handiwork.
He stared down at the thing he had killed. It was no demon, but it certainly wasn't anything from Earth, either. Quell's thoughts were interrupted by a voice in the distance.
"You've killed him. This makes me unhappy." The voice was light and playful, but full of feigned sorrow.
Quell turned in its direction and saw, standing a few dozen yards away, a small girl with snow-white hair and pouting eyes. She wore a little blue dress and held her hands clasped behind her back. She couldn't have been more than eight years old.
"Why did you kill my pet, mister?" she asked innocently.
But Quell was not fooled by the ruse. That thing over that was no girl. He drew his sword once more and took a few steps toward her, his expression unchanging.
The little girl's confused and saddened expression turned to once of pure malice, an expression no human child could contort her face into. The girl's body grew into that of a full-grown woman, and her dress clung to her flesh then morphed and expanded into shining black plates of armor. But her hair remained stark white. The red glow of the demon's eyes, hidden before by her guise, now shone brightly in the fading sunlight.
She reappeared in front of Quell, traveling the entire distance between them instantaneously. Quell was quick, however, and even as her body was materializing he slashed with his sword. The demon reached out and grasped his wrist with her bony fingers. An intense pain suddenly consumed Quell's arm, originating from her hand. Gasping, he looked down at his wrist and saw black veins of corruption spreading from the demon's palm.
Quell drove his knee up into the demon's armored chest, dislodging her, then extended his foot fully, kicking her down. He touched the blackened flesh on his wrist and cringed as a bolt of pain shot from the contact of his fingertips. He grimaced and took his sword into the opposite hand.
He ran at the demon with a growl. She rolled backwards gracefully onto her feet and dodged Quell's first attack. He swiped horizontally, but he spun the katana around, holding it upside down, and thrust it straight through the demon's armored chest. He twisted the blade for emphasis.
The white-haired demon put her hands on the sword protruding from her chest and looked down at the wound. A trickle of black blood escaped her ruby lips. With a violent shove she pushed herself of the sword then staggered back a few steps. She spat out a wad of blood and glared at Quell.
A black void opened up directly behind her. She put one foot through it, then said, "Remember the name Vetis, human, for you will hear it again shortly," before stepping completely through it. The portal close as she disappeared.
Quell sheathed his blade and turned back to the dead creature on the street. "Figures she'd leave me to clean up the mess." He began heading out of New York City back towards his Jeep a mile or so away.
