Historical Indentured Servants Romance Role Play

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby merthur on Tue Sep 24, 2013 3:18 pm

Alright, so in 9th grade AP History, we're talking about the whole North/South conflict and the Separatists and all that. One of the topics discussed was the difference between a servant and a indentured servant. That's sort of where I got the idea for this.

It'd be set in the past, in the South, on a large plantation. Maybe like, three or four? wealthy teens are pretty dependent on their parents money. Until that disappears, and they're left broke and don't really know how to cope. So they sell themselves to work on this plantation as indentured servants, for three years time. Afterwards, each will get a piece of land and a bit of money to support themselves at first.

Then there will be a few playable characters that are servant-servants. And some that are sons/daughters of the plantation owners. Lots of angst and work and forbidden romance maybe. Open to ideas and suggestions, please make some. I'd love if you commented or PM'd me. I'd want a co-owner... Because I'm bad at running role plays.

I'm really, really wanting to do this idea, so thank you for looking.

If I remember correctly, indentured servitude began in the early 1600s and ended in the early 1900s. It was primarily used as a way for poor immigrants to come to America, where they were work for an determinate amount of years wage-free so that by the end they would have the skills to open their own trade or farm. The only difference between them and slaves was they were promised an end to their servitude at some point, although many died before it was up and a lot of employers made up excuses to not free them. They were even referred to as "white slaves" at times. At the appearance of the African slaves to the New World, the desire for indentured servants lessened, but did not disappear. Most indentured servants were under the age of 21.

Sorry, I'm a Colonial America nerd. I'm up for it as long as it is historically accurate, and I can help in any way you need.

I'd make it as historically accurate as I could, but some things might be a bit off. Mostly in the aspect that the slaves would mainly be white, rather than African, and the whole plot idea. The people made indentured servants would be former-richies and their fathers would have somehow known the plantation owner guy.
