Lost in the Dark(OOC)

Tips: 0.00 INK Postby xMessiahx on Wed Jun 10, 2009 11:46 pm

This thread is long and a bit unorganized. I'm fatigued, and can't think completely straight right now. Caffeine crash? Definitely. Too much time on my Xbox 360 and sleep deprivation? Definitely. So, please, bear with me. Oh, and yes, Element Zero and some of my descriptions were taken from the game Mass Effect. That, and my large imagination, is what inspired this roleplay. But, back to the point, I organized this the best I could. If you have an idea on how to make this better, PM me.

Lost in the Dark

Prologue

Date: November 6th, 2050.
The exploration team Omega Delta had been launched to explore the polar ice caps of Mars. They were searching for signs of life, cellular, advanced, either would make them happy. The exploration team had successfully landed, and Omega Delta set up a research center.

Date: December 21st, 2050.
Excavation of the polar ice caps had begun. No signs of life, yet. Large structures visible lower in the ice caps.

Date: December 30th, 2050.
Excavation teams reached the top of one of the large structures visible. Attempts to take samples of the material failed, diamond tipped saws had no effect. Lasers overloaded and exploded. Projectiles bounced away before impact. Scientists found a door leading into a large library like complex within the structure. Language unknown.

Date: January 1st, 2051.
All information from the alien archives have been extracted and taken to the United Earth Embassy for decryption. Slow progress. Holographic projected found within the excavation site, deeper into the ice caps. The activation had displayed a human like figure, speaking an unknown language. Also transported to the United Earth Embassy.

Date: December 1st, 2051.
All information has been decrypted. Element Zero, Mass-Relay, Comm Buoys, FTL, all had been unlocked. The secrets within the martian archives had advanced human technology nearly four hundred years. Exploration teams were sent to all other planets of the Sol system.

Date: July 4th, 2055.
Exploration teams sent beyond the rim of the Sol system. Foundation of the UEA had begun.

Date: January 3rd, 2070.
UEA colonization had begun.

Date: January 1st, 2101.
Celebration of the 22nd century begins. Construction of the USN Sovereign begins. No information on it had been released to the public.

Date: October 26th, 2155.
Full crew enlistment begins for the USN Sovereign.

Date: July 4th, 2156. USN Sovereign departs for deep-space exploration. Activation of the FTL drives backfires. Sovereign shot into deep space. Location somewhere along the outer rim of the Milky Way, across the galaxy from the UEA territory. They are effectively lost in the dark. The United Earth Alliance council determines them MIA, search parties are sent.

Date: July 5th, 2156.
Present date.
----------------- Introduction -----------------

Quick information
You are a crew member of the USN Sovereign. In 2050 - 2051, humanity made a discovery that forwarded their technology nearly 400 years. After the forming and colonization of the UEA, or United Earth Alliance, the USN Sovereign had been constructed and sent into deep space as part of a cutting-edge exploration team. The Sovereign is the most advanced ship in known galactic space, and can outgun, outmaneuver, outperform, and outlast any other vessel. But without the exact location of the UEA(which is less than .005% the galaxy), they are lost in the dark. Nobody knows where they are. You and the crew must survive and try and find your way back home, or form alliances with alien races. The Sovereign is a dreadnought classed ship(largest ships in the UEA fleet), and is a a long ship with a main tower and two "wings". Click for picture of ship.

Rules
1. This is futuristic, yes, but it's also science fiction. That means everything in this roleplay has a technological possibility in the future. So don't go around saying things that are completely impossible.
2. No godmodding.
2. No powerplaying.
3. No autohitting.
4. All posts must be at least five sentences UNLESS you are talking, or in combat.
5. Don't act like an idiot.
(Yes, I'm aware I made two rule number two's. I'm too lazy to fix it, so please ignore xD)

----------------- Sovereign Information -----------------

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO READ EVERYTHING BELOW. I WOULD JUST RECOMMEND IT.

Before we go on, here are some need-to-know terms:
E-Z drive core - Element-Zero drive core. A cutting-edge drive core costing trillions that is only in the Sovereign. Pronounced "Easy" drive core.
FTL - Faster-than-Light. Your FTL speed is measured by subtracting your current speed in mi/s(miles per second) from the conventional speed of light in a vacuum.
DRA - Diffuse Radiator Arrays - Ceramic strips along exterior of the Sovereign.
VI - Virtual Intelligence. Like Artificial Intelligence, but cannot think for itself.
AI - Artificial Intelligence. A synthetic life form. Many people say "Artificial Intelligence" is racism towards synthetics, and that SI, or Synthetic Intelligence is the actual term. Synthetics have as much free will, emotion, and personality as any human or alien race.

Stealth

Let's face it, you can't hide a ship out in space. It emits too much heat and radiation for sensors to pick up, unless you can find a way to capture these emissions. The Sovereign's stealth systems capture the emissions in storage sinks built around the E-Z Drive core. No emissions to give away the Sovereign's location.

Eventually, though, the sinks will reach their storage limit and will have to vent. Run "silent" for too long, and they'll overheat and melt down, damaging the engine and cooking the crew alive, just like your CPU's heatsink on your standard computer.

The ship isn't literally invisible. A visual scan can still pick up the ship, you can see it plain as day. But you have to be pretty close to get a visual in space, being that it's dark and the Sovereign is painted jet-black.
Most vessels, due to this favored paint-job, rely on scanners alone. As long as the Sovereigns stealth systems are engaged, it's nearly undetectable, unless it accelerates to FTL speeds.

Using FTL transportation blue-shifts the emissions, pushes them into frequencies too high to capture in the sinks built into the Sovereign. As soon as the Sovereign makes the jump into FTL speeds, it's like setting off a radiation flare. Sensors can pick up the Sovereign's location whenever they enter or exit FTL flight, but for short range, the stealth systems are amazing, and the Sovereign has the only one.

Propulsion

The Sovereign is one of the fastest ships in the galaxy. It employs the use of the E-Z Drive Core for FTL flight, and sublight travel.

The E-Z Drive Core is about twice the size of a normal vessels drive core. It's massive, but it's also has a power to size ratio of 15:1. That means it would take fifteen normal drive cores the size of the E-Z Core to produce the same amount of power.

Thanks to the fuel source, Element Zero, the E-Z Core can run at FTL speeds about five times longer than any other core before it has to discharge.

Element Zero can increase or decrease the mass of a volume of space-time when an electrical current comes in contact with it. With a positive current mass is increased. With a negative current, mass is decreased. The stronger the current, the greater the magnitude of the dark energy mass effect. The more an objects mass is decreased, the higher the speed of light is, allowing for faster travel.

Using this phenomenon, the Sovereign lowers the mass of the ship allowing faster rates of acceleration, and effectively raising the speed of light within the mass-effect field. This allows high speed travel with negligible relavitistic time dilation effects. If the Sovereign were to run out of electricity to pass through the Element Zero, it would snap back to sublight velocity instantly and the enormous amount of energy shed would be Cerenkov radiation, and would be extremely lethal if anything were to survive the thousands, if not millions of G's experienced.

As for basic sublight propulsion, the Sovereign uses Element Zero to create concentrations of ultra-high mass that the ship "falls" into due to gravity. This happens within the E-Z drive core, but since the entire ship is virtually massless thanks to Element Zero, it is unaffected by the high gravitational effect within the core.

Heat Management

When not running silently, the Sovereign has to vent heat bypassing the storage sinks somehow. Conventional ships use fragile radiator plates that are impossible to armor. The Sovereign uses a network of DRA. These make the ship appear marked with mystical designes on a thermographic sensor. The Sovereign manages heat so well that if whole section of the DRA is damaged or shut offline, it will still function perfectly. 80% of the strips must be destroyed for the remaining part to start glowing white hot, and melt down.

During FTL travel, the ceramic strips are not enough. The temperature within the ship rises to 100 degrees flat, and the ceramic strips glow blue hot for the entire trip. While discomforting, refrigeration modules may be employed to lower the overall heat. The Sovereign uses this meathod, keeping the hull cool.

During ship to ship combat, any starship will produce titanic amounts of heat from maneuvering burns and weapons fire. The Sovereign uses the 80% of DRA not used to vent, allowing for sustained combat. No other starship can sustain ship to ship combat like the Sovereign.

Though the Sovereign isn't impervious to meltdown. When fighting in a high-heat environment, like near a star or in a warm nebula, the Sovereign uses a second heat dispersing method that must be manually activated.

It uses a droplet system that has large tanks of liquid lithium to absorb heat within the ship. The liquid is vented from spray nozzles near the bow as a thin sheet of millions of micrometer-scale droplets. The droplets near instantly cool in the almost absolute-zero vacuum, when they are brought into the ship again. But if the Sovereign is to maneuver after the lithium liquid cooling is enabled, the droplets will fan out and it will leave the coolant behind.

Communications

Real time communication across the huge distances of space that may be light years or more are possible due to expensive mass relay comm systems that can link up with comm buoys via lasers. The buoys create microscopic corridors of virtually massless space, allowing tightbeam communications via lasers to be piped through the corridors at FTL speeds. This creates virtually instantaneous communication to anywhere covered by the comm buoy network.

Though, this has a downside. If anything is to pass infront of a buoy with considerable width, it will cut out the connection. Just like trying to get a cellphone signal underground. Put too much dense material between the emitter and receiver, and you've lost connection.

If this occurs, instantaneously the signal will reroute to another buoy, quickly determining the fastest route taking many factors into account. Network activity, available bandwidth, and light lag. Light lag is when the FTL speeds are not fast enough to deliver the message instantaneously, and you must wait a small amount of time.

If too many people are using the bandwidth of a comm buoy, and there are no other routes, the lag will be very large. You may have to wait hours, even days.

Since a starship is moving throughout space, a solid connection takes some time to form as the ship must find a comm buoy. This takes anywhere between one minute to ten minutes, depending on how far away from the nearest buoy you are.

The Sovereign has its own comm buoy built into it, allowing for a huge increase in bandwidth available. The entire crew can download terabytes of information each instantaneously, so long as there is a solid, clean connection to other comm buoys. Other ships can only download about a terabyte per second maximum.

The amount of bandwidth an individual is allowed varies according to a priority list. Exploration vessels and high-ranking officials have top priority, and always have about five terabytes per second of bandwidth available. Or, enough to download more than a years worth of continually playing music every second. The Sovereign has about 800 terabytes per second to download at all times. If only seven hundred are available, the lowest priority must donate their bandwidth to the Sovereign.

Aboard the Sovereign, many comm panels and VI stations are active. Nobody knows who made the original comm buoys, but they are everywhere in the galaxy, but some work on different frequencies than others, preventing the Sovereign from contacting the UEA.

Defense

The Sovereign has a great number of defenses. Aside from the stealth systems, the Sovereign has a large kinetic barrier protecting it.

Kinetic barriers, commonly called shields, provide protection against mass accelerating weapons(bullets, gauss rifles, etc). Whether on the armor of a boarding-crew or the Sovereign itself, the basic principle is the same.

Kinetic barriers are repulsive mass effect fields projected from tiny emitters. These shields safely deflect small objects traveling at rapid velocities. This allows protection against projectiles, but will allow you to come in to contact with something without it shooting away from you.

This shielding does not protect against radiation, heat, toxic materials, or anything already inside the barrier itself. The barrier, which is produced by Element Zero, does not require much power itself though it will not function without electricity.

Aside from this, the Sovereigns ceramic venting strips also create mystifying patterns on a thermographic sensor. This intimidates whoever is tracking the Sovereign.

The Sovereign also has a last line of defence against lasers. If needed, the Sovereign could start leaking the lithium coolant onto the exterior armored "skin", providing something to take the heat of the laser and refract it, so it doesn't damage anything.

Offense

The Sovereign uses only mass accelerating weapons. A mass accelerator propels a solid metal slug using precisely-controlled electromagnetic attraction and repulsion. The slug is designed to squash or shatter on impact, increasing the energy it transfers to the target.

The slug is lightened by a mass effect field from Element Zero, then accelerated to near lightspeed. If an object is accelerated enough, a simply paint chip can impact with the force of a nuclear explosion, though accelerators produce recoil equal to their impact energy.

This being said, the Sovereigns Mass Accelerator weapons only accelerate the object to the point where they inflict about a kiloton of TNT's worth. The slugs can be repelled by a kinetic barrier, though.

To bypass the kinetic barriers of enemy ships, the Sovereign has mass torpedoes. They have ultra-high masses, thanks to Element Zero's mass effect fields, and have protonic warheads, which explode in a cascade of deadly protons causing nuclear chain reactions. They are slow, and easy prey for enemy defensive lasers, though.

Lastly, the Sovereign has a massive mass accelerator running the entire length of the ship(that long section with the four shield plates on the front). It can accelerate a massive radioactive metal slug to about 2 times the speed of light, creating a massive impact.

Rooms

The Sovereign has many rooms. Most of which are accessible to the public. I'll update this list as much as possible.

Crew Barracks - Where the soldiers reside. Each has a 10x10x8 private bunk room, complete with a bed, TV, phone, VI station and intercom.
Weapons Room - A large room containing the weapons locker for every soldier on board. The Crew Barracks is located in the middle of the ship. The Weapons Room is located behind the Crew Barracks.
Control Room - A large, 100 foot long, 50 foot wide, 15 foot tall room with a large ultra-tough glass window giving maximum vision infront, behind, and to the sides of the Sovereign. The control room contains a large 15x15x5 projector, which contains a jungle of wires beneath. It also contains the controls for almost every aspect of the ship. The Control Room is located at the back, up on a large tower. Only way up is an elevator ir emergency staircase. Two escape pods.
Engine Room - The room containing the E-Z drive core. Temperatures are high, about 98 degrees constantly. The E-Z core is quiet, though. The room is about 100x100x10 feet. The drive core takes up half of the space, while the top of the core is 40 feet above the roof of the room. The engine room is located at the very back, bottom of the ship.
Mess Hall - A huge, 400x400x20 room which serves first class meals. Located infront of the Crew Barracks.
Briefing Room - A small briefing room with a holographic projector, 15 seats, and an VI interface. Located at the very front of the ship.
Diplomacy Quarters - A restricted section of the ship where all diplomatic decisions are made amongst the higher ranking crew members. Fifty seats, holographic projectors for those not aboard the Sovereign, and a VI interface. Located just behind the Briefing Room.

That's that. If I get anything wrong, please PM me and I will rectify it. One question. Are the temperatures here all in F or C? (or K?)

ALSO: I voted that this thread is good, but may be lacking some detail. I'm not sure how to handle this, because it is already a long read, and making it longer may be a bad thing. I think it is well thought out though, too many threads leave to much open, and peoples ideas of the situation may vary. I may have to read it again to understand my role, seeing as I'm going to be right there with the thing, so any extra detail you have my warrent a PM.

Maybe that is how it should go. If any extra info is needed, that only a few people should/do know, send 'em a PM.

ALSO ALSO: It's kinda ironic, I was reading about Stellar Evolution and Supernovae when I found this thread, so I'm rip roaring to go. :D
You're born with one talent, unique from all others. What would you do with it?

It's all good, accepted. And I probably will PM some people information, because if you actually post something only a few people are to know, but you tell them to ignore it, they'll remember it.

And I'm adding more detail, but I'm organizing it more. Small details, but some necessary ones.
