Re: Torture: pro or con?

Here's the truth: a lot of people (latter-day hippies and their various jackass knockoffs) believe that things should be fair. Ever since we were children, we've been told and found out that the world is not fair, and it is our military's job to make things unfair for anyone that is an enemy of our...

Re: Spanking & Corporal Punishment Against Children

It's still acceptable, and it's a reminder that doing that will bring pain. It's the same as placing your hand on a stove. You've been told time and time again not to do it, but you don't fully understand why. The moment you place your hand on it, and you're like, "Aw son of a bitch ow pain,&q...

Re: Spanking & Corporal Punishment Against Children

First we should probably figure out what 'spanking' is. In -my- family, what I grew up with and had myself, a spanking was a form of a shock and awe technique. It was a light swat to the bottom , in which my father called spanking. I received this upon doing something wrong, which I knew was wrong,...

Spanking & Corporal Punishment Against Children

What are your thoughts on it? Personally, I oppose all forms of physical punishment against children on the grounds that they promote authoritarian thinking ('do as I say or else you'll be beat'), simplistic moral and ethical values, fear of the parent(s), et al.

Re: Torture: pro or con?

I think it's a bit irrational -- as even though I'm anti-torture, I still think there could be some situations where it would be useful -- but as a general policy, I think it's right. Torture is barbaric, and ineffectual.

Re: Torture: pro or con?

I think you guys are missing the point: would you really be saving lives by torturing him? Statistics I've seen show that torture is pretty ineffectual. I mean, if there aren't many other options, I guess I'd try it because I'd be desperate, but I'd exhaust everything else first.

Re: Torture: pro or con?

Is there any good evidence that the use of torture will likely get him to give me reliable information, and not just waste time?

Re: Theocracy

@deal_with_it: I'm in pretty much full agreement with you. However, I still think it's probably beneficial to read the Qur'an, because you might gain a greater understanding of what billions of people believe, and that can't really be a bad thing. @Kashim: I think I shall read the Qur'an over at Ske...

Re: Theocracy

fallacy, Read it to learn something. Isn't that enough incentive? It's not like I'm asking you to read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica. The Qu'ran is one book. As a trade off, recommend a book to me, and I'll read it. There are lots of other things I could read that would be a better use of my t...

Re: Theocracy

I'm in general agreement with 'deal with it'. I have no real interest in reading the Qur'an or commentaries about it, unless you give me a good reason why I should.

Re: Theocracy

My troll sense is tingling. Can you explain exactly why: 1. People who think that the Abrahamic religions are patriarchal, authoritarian, and violent are bigots, and can be dismissed by simply calling them such? 2. I am a troll? As a student of Islam, and from an Islamic point of view, if mankind w...

Re: Theocracy

I tend to agree, at least if we're talking about the patriarchal authoritarian violent Abrahamic religions . Governments based on them tend to be patriarchal, authoritarian, and violent as well. My bigot sense is tingling. Oh yes, the Abrahamic religions are just teacups and roses -- and if you thi...

Re: Designer Babies: A Question of Ethics and Morality

I'm sorry for hurting your feelings, but at that point, you didn't say very much to support your opinion. Common sense would tell you that you have a better argument if you have supporting details. Ice Queen did have the common sense to support her argument. ... :| If you knew more about evolution ...
