The Intro

”Paradise” Whoever named this rock had a terrible sense of humor. A dustball world on the edge of the frontier, Paradise is as close to what the Humans call "hell" as I've ever seen. The infernal dust which blankets the world is jagged, sharp and clingy. Paradise was a young world, and her soil was that of a young world, fresh and new, untouched by wind and water and time. The Humans, so hasty to explore, conquer and terraform, didn't bother to plant vegetation, or fix the soil, thinking they could rely on their technology to replace nature. And when it turned out that combining an atmosphere with young soil and almost no plant life to hold it down created a world choked in abrasive dust storms by day, and freezing, sucking mud at night, they left. But the Humans can't stand to lose, not arguments, not wars, and especially not money. So they took their failure, and bent it to a new purpose. Paradise, once intended to be the desert jewel of the Frontier, became a penal colony for dissidents, subversives, and unruly xenos. The dust, the damn dust that once foiled Humanity where none of us could, was now their greatest ally. It destroys machines, slipping into the cracks and grinding the works away to nothing. Vehicles, power armor, weapons, electronics, all but the most simple and the toughest devices rendered useless by mere dust. Paradise needs no guards, no orbital defense platforms, no patrol fleet. The dust will keep anyone from ever building the means to get off this world. There is only one way off Paradise: the maintenance crews who come to service the oxygen and ozone generators. Their ships are built off-world, specially designed to resist the dust. If a clever man could get his hands on one of those ships, why he might just get off Paradise. But it wouldn't be easy. I've been telling this tale for 40 years, and I've never seen the man that could do it. But who knows... maybe YOU could..."

The Premise

Paradise 2778 is a roleplay set on the frontier world of Paradise, one of several penal colonies established by the Unified Systems Protectorate, the Human meta-corporate empire which dominates the Milky Way, to house the worst criminals, subversives and dissidents who oppose them. You will play as a small group (I'm thinking about five or six) of prisoners who are trying to escape by hijacking a ship. The setting, and thus the tone, of the RP is intended to be very gritty, dark and on the harder side of science fiction. Paradise is a very nasty place, and survival, let alone success, is difficult: the dust and extreme temperatures render all but either the simplest or the most advanced technology inoperable, there is no real production base or economy to speak of, beyond barter and trade, and the Protectorate really doesn't care if the prisoners kill eachother, so the world is wracked in near-constant warfare between tribes and warlords.

I want the RP to focus heavily on the characters, and the interactions between them within this hellish setting. Will they draw strength from adversity and become closer? Will they achieve only a tenuous alliance, waiting to stab eachother in the back when freedom is within their grasp? Will they be able to overcome the differences between their races, and the racial and cultural baggage that comes with living in the Protectorate's 28th Century?

I'm looking for players who are literate, with some experience, and who are capable of producing three to five+ paragraph posts at least once a day. I want people who are interested in writing good characters, and are willing to co-operate and communicate extensively with each other to produce the best story that we can. You should be comfortable with posting detailed, well-structured posts with good spelling, punctuation and grammar. I structure my posting based on a posting hierarchy, with a pre-determined post order derived from people's availability and time zone, so if you're used to a very free-form RP style, such as chat RP, this might not be the thing for you.

As for myself, I've been RPing on various sites since 2010. I've been a regular GM for most of that, running RPs here, and on other sites like NationStates. I focus on literate, high-quality posting, good characters, and like to run a very structured, organized RP. I will use the various unique tools of RPGateway, such as Places and Groups, to their full advantage, and try to make things as uniform and easy to understand as possible with standard character templates, detailed introduction threads, a clear posting order, and lots of fluff and background info in OOC threads.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you find this up your alley!

The Roles

The group will be composed of five characters, plus my own, for a grand total of six. I have three mildly specific roles in mind, which we will need, but the remaining two are open to interpretation.

Cast of Characters:

  • The Brains: Taura Lex - (Screwface Romeo)
  • The Muscle: (Aracrexus)
  • The Stealth Guy: (Open)
  • The Tech: (Solo Wing Pixy)
  • The Demo Guy: (Quakernuts)
  • Other: (Open)
  • The Gearhead: (SlightlyIrregular)

You can find the RP itself here: roleplay/paradise-2778
I would make a nice tidy hyperlink, but apparently over a year of RP and forum participation, and GMing three RPs doesn't count as "seeing enough of me"

Lore Threads

*To those involved in Mass Effect: Independence, relax: this doesn't mean the end of ME:I, and won't interfere with the time I'm already dedicating to it.

I'm very interested in this as I've been having an itch for real sci-fi lately. I'm leaning towards tech specialist but if someone else really wanted it, I would be fine taking one of the other slots. I'm excited to see how this progresses.

Sweet! Glad to see the interest.

Well, slots and roles are on a first come, first served basis, so you've got a slot, and the tech spot if you want it.

I'm afraid that wouldn't really fit with the universe. The Protectorate elevates races they can use, and annihilates those they can't. A parasitic or even symbiotic lifeform would cause immense problems for them, especially if said species could possess humans, which would majorly conflict with their Human Supremacist ideology. Even if such a lifeform were to sneak into Protectorate space undetected, if one was caught, it would be exterminated, not sent to Paradise.

What was your other idea?

Highly aggressive human offshoot known as an Aethus. They look like this: http://i.imgur.com/jWxGWXX.png

yes, this image is owned by me

they are essentially a regenerating war-loving race.

I am putting this here, like a flag of declaration towards a spot within this RP.

Fear the Flag....

Fear the Quaker...

Also, fear ocelots. They are vicious creatures who will maul your spleen out.

I would like to claim an 'other' spot within the RP if I could. I only have a small idea as to what I would like to create at the moment, and will update once I solidify the character.

*EDIT*

Would it be possible to be a GLF-affiliated Saboteur sent to Paradise? Or are those ladies and gents executed on the spot?

That already basically exists in-universe in the form of Transcendants, tripartite cyborgs (organic/genetic, cybernetic, and nanotech), designed as special forces, then all but killed off when it was realized that their abilities, coupled with extreme sociopathy that they could never find a way around made them far too much of a threat. The few who remain are either in the upper echelons of the Protectorate, or hunted and on the run.

Trans-humanism, genetic modification, biotech grafting and cybernetic modification are widespread and quite popular, but there is much debate as to how far away from human is too far. Much of Protectorate ideology is based in the so-called "Human Cult", a twisted adaptation of Christianity which preaches that Humans are God's Chosen, created in His image to conqour the Galaxy and subjugate all other races as part of their manifest destiny. A completely seperate subspecies evolving from humanity would never be tolerated, but heavily biologically augmented individuals with regenerating abilities wouldn't be unheard of. Perhaps an extremist group which tried to create a "master race" subspecies through biological and genetic augmentation, and were punished for their efforts by having their group forcibly dismantled, with most of them killed and the rest banished to various penal colonies, including Paradise?

I know it sounds like I'm being a dick and shooting down all your ideas, but I really just have a ton of this universe already fleshed out. Sorry!

Nice art, by the way! I can draw tech, but I can't do the humanoid figure for shit.

High up GLF types are shot on sight or dragged back to Earth for public execution. Footsoldiers, low lever operatives and agitators? They could find themselves on Paradise quite easily.

Awesome!

The idea I'm kinda running for the moment, tentative based on figuring things out as I run through the CS. is a mercenary who had a running contract with the GLF to perform jobs for them of a explosive nature. So technically he could be classified as a GLF operative, but he wouldn't claim to be one himself.

Does that work for you?

What would constitute an alien race that the Protectorate can use? Do they uplift races for specific biological reasons(i.e a species that's more resistant to radioactivity being uplifted to work in radioactive areas) or do they just uplift any race capable of serving as a labor force? Also, are all subjugated races treated generally the same, or is there some sort of hierarchy, and how would a near-human race, like the vulcans from star trek or the twi'leks from star wars be handled? Lastly, I assume we can come up with our own race so long as it doesn't conflict with your setting? Speaking of which, I'm excited to read all this lore. I'm fleshing out a sci-fi universe of my own right now and background lore and worldbuilding is like my favorite part of writing.

I'm thinking of creating a character once loyal to The Protectorate, but turned against them due to various reasons. Would such a character be executed or shipped?
Also, what species are useful enough to the point where the Prectorate can consider them as a 'equals' (equal being loosely used term, of course), or at least allied to the point where hostility towards them is seldom seen, yet still present?

It would have to be a hardy creature indeed to survive the terraforming process, and continue to thrive after said process had been botched. After all, the objective of the RP is to steal a starship from people whose job is literally maintaining the atmosphere.

It depends on a number of things. They specifically look for races that are at least bipedal, if not humanoid. A species can't be much bigger or smaller than humans, and has to be capable of surviving in an earthlike environment without taking undo precautions (our blue friends from avatar, for example, would have been annihilated for these exact reasons: too big, and they need a specific atmosphere that's deadly to humans). Other factors can disqualify species as well: superhuman abilities which are not useful to them, or which they are unable to control, such as limited telepathy, make a species too dangerous to uplift. There aren't enough species in the galaxy that they can prioritize to the point where they're looking for specific races to fit specific conditions; as long as a species is relatively malleable, can survive and interact in the human prioritized environments on Protectorate space craft and terraformed planets, and doesn't have any of the no no factors, they will probably uplift it. All of which is rather academic at this point, since Humanity hasn't encountered any new alien races in almost 300 years.

There is most definitely a hierarchy, roughly based on two factors: overall docility and loyalty, and how humanoid you are. The more humanoid, the better, because in the Protectorate humanness is close to godliness. The most humanoid race, the Followers, are generally treated the best, in terms of privilege (I should also mention, species are renamed, and every effort is made to destroy as much of their history, language and culture as possible, in order to prevent them from having anything to rally around) but even a high Xeno is still a Xeno. And while Followers tend to be given more leeway than other races, in many cases they actually have more stigma and abuse attached to them, as their cultural predilections tend to put them at extreme odds with what humanity typically expects. I try to avoid so-called "rubber forehead aliens", so you won't see anything as humanoid as a Vulcan or really most of the Star Trek races. If you've ever played mass effect, we're looking at a roughly similar spread in terms of design, minus the asari (who are textbook rubber forehead aliens) and the hanar, for obvious reasons.

Yep.

If you can't already tell, it's my favorite to :P

I see no reason why such an individual would not end up on Paradise. A sort of Uncle Tom who woke up to the reality of the situation?

Followers get the best treatment. They are still discriminated against, mocked, and the subject of slurs and cruel jokes, but they have more access than any other race, and are more likely to be in positions of relative power to the others. Consider the position of the Irish in America during the 19th century. They weren't considered to be "truly white", and they were still treated pretty badly, but they had far more opportunity then actual minorities. And at this point, most Protectorate technology was either designed by Followers, programmed by them, or modified and updated by them to the point where if the Followers were to suddenly disappear off the face of the galaxy, the Protectorate would collapse within the decade. The quintessential hypocrisy of the Protectorate is that they claim aliens are lazy, and making them work is really in their own best interest, but the reality is that they're just doing the jobs that humans are too lazy to do.
