The Williams family has humble roots. Neither parent was particularly well off, and both Thomas and his wife had to work for everything. They put themselves through college, and expected to be working their whole lives just to pay off their student loans. Thomas worked his way up to management in a small business, one he never expected to go anywhere. But it was a job, and it payed the bills. A year or so after he started working for them, the company hit the big time. Thomas's salary increased dramatically in a matter of months. As if that wasn't enough, his wife found a new job- one that, while it was harder work with longer hours, offered much better pay and was closer to home. Nobody could say that it was undeserved- both had spent their whole lives so far working hard. And even when they were living a much more comfortable life, they never forgot their roots. Their kids went to public school. Both donated some of their salaries to charity and were regularly found helping out at charity events. Their kids grew up sturdy and well-rounded, coming across as model citizens.
So when Thomas is found dead, nobody expects foul play. It must be some kind of heart defect that had been dormant, something natural and tragic. But when it is announced that it is, in fact, murder, the community is sent into shock. Who would kill such an honest, hard-working, family-oriented man? Their whole family is a perfect family, one that couldn't possibly be involved in anything shady.
The perfect image is shattered when each member of the family is brought in for questioning. The loving mother, the prom queen daughter, the shy son... Rumours as to how and why they were questioned begin to fly. Was it just standard procedure? Was it just a witness interview that people misinterpreted? Could any of them actually have anything to do with the murder? And if they are, what could their motives possibly be?
Beneath their picture-perfect exterior, the Williams family has many dirty secrets, ones that, on reveal, would ruin their reputation. One person's secret could and would drag the whole family down. Their secrets must be kept at all costs. But would any of them kill to do so?
Throughout the day, they'd been planning for a dinner party that was in the coming days. While everyone else was out of the house, Thomas and his son had an argument (the subject of which is unknown). Thomas's wife came home to discover Thomas had his son pinned against a wall. She intervened. The argument was supposedly the last interaction Thomas and his son had before the murder. Thomas and his wife then had an argument about his illegitimate son, which their daughter overheard, but didn't do anything about. She later confronted him on this matter, and they had an argument. He apparently threw some insults, ones which touched multiple nerves. According to Thomas's wife, he was particularly on edge that day after an argument with one of his business partners. He stormed out of the house. His mistress says that she came to visit him, but that nothing happened as they also had an argument, after which he returned home to find his illegitimate son waiting for him. He tried to avoid engaging, which resulted in him storming upstairs to his study, and his illegitimate son storming out of the house. A few hours later, Thomas left again, at which point, his son also left to go to one of his friends' house, claiming he needed to help him study.
Thomas Williams' body was found at 23:00 hours by a passing dog-walker. Nobody was aware of anyone else leaving- because everyone was alone in their own room. Nobody has a concrete alibi. Everyone had a chance to leave the house without anyone else noticing- and everyone had potential motivation.
No godmodding. All characters are human.
Keep the drama to the IC. If you have a problem with another member, try and sort it out over PM, and if that isn't working, I will act as a mediator.
On acceptance, or when we have a decent member of characters, I will be sending around PM's to every character. Everyone will have some knowledge about what exactly happened on the night of the murder, something that they wouldn't necessarily want getting out. That way, everyone has a reason to be suspicious of everyone else. If you're not comfortable with the secret I give you, please do let me know, and I'll change it.
If anybody just magically finds out another character's secret or figures it out without too much work, it spoils all the fun. Don't do that.
I will be messaging the character who is the killer when I am happy with the amount of characters we have.
If you are uncomfortable with any theme that comes up, either IC or in a character sheet please tell me. I will do what I can to change it.
If you want to leave, let me know, and I will reassign the killer if necessary, and your character will be killed off or leave for another reason.
If you don't post for two weeks and don't give me some kind of reason, I'll assume you have left and will proceed as such.

The Wife:

She was well and truly in love with her husband once. Well, she still loved him to the end- but he'd messed up one too many times. She found out about his affair a number of months ago. The way he treated their children at times was the source of multiple arguments between the pair. But, rumour has it, he crossed a line somewhere in the hours before his death. Her children were her true love- so if he'd done anything to potentially harm them, who knows what she'd do to defend them?
The Mistress:
FC: Viola Davis | Age: (30-35) | Reserved- Sunshine and Whiskey
He never told her that he was married. By the time she found out, they were all in too deep. Exposing them would ruin her, Thomas, and his wife. She couldn't, however, stay silent. So she reached out to his wife, and they came to an agreement to stay silent and let it all blow over. Her reputation was much too important to her. That's not to say she was happy. Thomas Williams wasn't exactly a saint to her- and as they say, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
The Business Partner:

Thomas Williams was an honest man when it came to his job, and always kept everything above board. So when she decided to play a little dirty, he called her out on it. At first, that just resulted in disciplinary action- but she was also warned that she wasn't going to get a second chance. She interpreted that as a warning to be more careful. Of course, it was a matter of time before she was caught again- and, again, it was by Thomas. This time, it was her job on the line- and how far would she go to keep him quiet?
The Daughter:
FC: Holland Roden | Age: (20-25) | Reserved- Annalee2010
The oldest child, and poised to be the most successful. She was already the golden child- but perfection comes at a price. Nobody asked her to be perfect- but nonetheless, she knew it was expected of her. Have good grades, be popular, get into a good college... She somehow managed to pull all of these off, but the pressure didn't disappear when she went to university. She realised that those expectations would be on her for the rest of her life. Did that realisation finally make her snap?
The Son:
FC: Caleb Landry Jones | Age: (17-22) |
The Williams were overjoyed when they had a son. Somebody to carry on the family name, and bear it with pride. The problems began to arise when they began to have their suspicions about their son's sexuality. Thomas tried to change it- thought that getting his son to play sports or go to parties with girls older than him would somehow change it. Eventually, his son had enough and openly admitted to being gay. This causes the relationship between Thomas and his son to rapidly deteriorate- but did it go quite that far?
The Son's "Friend":

To the public eye, they were just best friends. But behind closed doors, they were more than that. Thomas's son had tried to stay away from his best friend- but it didn't work. So eventually, he stopped trying. He was all Thomas' son had. He could see the damage that had been done- but did he take it into his own hands to try and stop any more from happening?
The Illegitimate Son:

Thomas Williams had a one night stand a few weeks before he and his wife got married. He immediately regretted it, and came clean to his wife. They got through it with the help of counselling, and neither of them thought any more of it. Not until a woman showed up at their door with a son in tow, claiming it was Thomas's. Naturally, they went for a paternity test before engaging with her any further- which came back positive. They came to a mutual agreement to pay child benefit if she kept it quiet. However, the son grew up and decided to look for his father- and he found him. Thomas offered to pay him off to keep quiet- but refused to acknowledge him as his son. He was, understandably, angry- but was he angry enough for blood?
The Detective:

He was as shocked as everyone else to hear of the murder of Thomas Williams. However, his job forced him to remain impartial- and the deeper he digs into the family, the more he finds. He knows that the family is trying to keep him out of their secrets, and that's just making him all the more determined to keep digging.

Even after that had happened, the Williams family kept going. They allowed themselves a few days to mourn and make all the necessary arrangements- but life went on. Even as they were interviewed by the police, they just worked their lives around it. They'd organised a dinner party for a few weeks after the death. Everyone had expected it to be cancelled- but it went ahead as always. And on entering the house, one could not be blamed for forgetting it was a house that had recently seen such a loss. It was neat and tidy as always, flawlessly decorated. The smiles of the hosts were natural, if a tad smaller than usual. They accepted all well wishes with grace.
But, as always, this was a mask. Beneath the surface, the tensions of the questioning and suspicions had taken their toll. The events of the night itself was still taking a toll on some of them. Being unable to trust one's own family can have a terrible effect on a person. Lies had been told. Things had been said that couldn't be taken back. Events had been witnessed that couldn't be forgotten.
Michael Williams, the youngest son, had impressed many. Known for his shyness, he'd dealt surprisingly well with all of the social interaction that the death of his father had brought. He'd still been shy, but he'd been able to hold a decent conversation with most people. On the outside, he had still maintained that perfect image of the perfect son.
On the inside, though, Michael was not doing so well. The events of that night had stuck with him. Sleeplessness. Nightmares when he did sleep. Even the occasional panic attack. His injuries still had to heal, leaving him with a physical reminder of what had happened. He was holding himself together for the benefit of his mother and the family's image.
Even at the dinner party, he was struggling more than he wanted to admit. He'd gotten a few hours sleep the night before, but he'd had so many nightmares, he may as well not have gotten any at all. He'd had to take a break from the socialising to hide out in the kitchen, saying that he had to do a job for his mother. But in reality, he was just trying to take a break and catch his breath. He wasn't sure how much longer he could keep it up.

Ash stood in his bedroom, of the home his parents had. His eyes looked over himself in the mirror. He had to make sure he looked pretty well, he was going to Michael's for a dinner party to honor his douche bag of a father. He didn't see why they even had to, but he decided he should go to support his best friend. His dark green-blue eyes would change to a dark green, as he walked out of his room.
"Yo Mom, Dad. I am going out." his voice boomed inside of the manor. He would start to walk downstairs, as he grabbed his jacket from the coat rack near the garage. The male would silently walk into the garage, as his mind blazed with thoughts. Did he really need to be there? Was it really needed? He was already questioned by the Detective, a highly annoying man might he add, and he didn't really feel like talking about Thomas. Thomas was a man, that at one point...Ash looked up to. He felt as if he was the epitome of amazement and success. But of course, that was before Ash became close to his son. He practically lived at the Williams' house for while. He heard the words that Thomas spoke to Michael. He could never forgive the man.
So honoring him was something, Ash was not to fond of. Atleast that's what he thought of the dinner being for. The male would look over the bountiful amount of cars his family owned, and decided to choose his baby. One of the few cars he loved to drive, when he was with Michael. Normally driving to the movies, anywhere. He would roll down the windows and allow the wind to blow in his hair. A few minutes passed, and Ash had arrived to the home. He parked and stepped out of the car.
He walked up to the door, and opened it. He headed towards the room where they'd all be in conversation, and ask where Mathew was. He was told, and headed into the kitchen. In a soft voice he spoke "Hey."

The guests for the dinner party had arrived an hour ago, and already they started to wear Kathleen out. In a different situation she would have relished in the many small but important tasks and talks that such a party brought with them. She still might have enjoyed the distraction if the guests hadn’t been so dedicated to making sure it was impossible to forget what had happened. Every other sentence mentioned her husband, and the other half were inquiries after the emotional wellbeing of her family. Kathleen went through the motions, feigning gratitude while wishing for the clock to tick faster. Only a little longer before she could signal everyone to start moving towards the dining room...
Kathleen glanced around, looking for an excuse to leave the room and get some air. When she spotted a few empty glasses left on a side table she grabbed the opportunity to leave her post. Before she could reach them however, a dark shape cut her off from her goal. She glanced at his face, quickly categorizing it as belonging to one of the guests. It was wearing the same morose expression that all faces wore lately when approaching her, probably because they believed a different expression would be inconsiderate.
“My sincere condolences… Thomas was a great man, and a good friend. This must be a difficult time for you and your family. If there’s anything I can do to help you…”
“Thank you… I really appreciate your presence and kind words.”
The words left her mouth automatically by now. Many acquaintances had come by the last few days. Some had come carrying food, believing that surely the mother of two would find it difficult to run a household while overcome with grieve. Kathleen had nodded, expressed gratitude and accepted the gifts graciously. Others had offered emotional support, telling her that she could always come to them to talk. Those people were approached with equally thankful words, yet they were never taken up on their offer.
As the man didn't appear to have anything else to say Kathleen nodded at him as she walked around him, quickly grabbing the glasses and making her way over to the kitchen. As she opened the door, she noticed her son. Repressing to urge to run towards him and pull him into a hug she carefully placed down the glasses first. She walked up towards Michael to place a hand on his shoulder, yet didn’t get around to saying anything before hearing Ash come in. Kathleen sighed softly and walked away from her son towards the fridge. As she stared at the shiny display she noticed from her reflection that a few loose strands of hair had escaped her hair clip. Pushing the strands behind her ears with one hand, she opened the fridge with the other.
“Good evening Acheron.”

Noah took a deep breath and held it in. "1, 2, 3." His breath turned to fog when he released it into the crisp night air. He pulled the lapels of his wool coat tighter around him as he walked. After all that had happened, he wasn't sure if the Williams family would want to see him, but he knew he had to try.
Everything on the sleepy streets of suburban Rockwood seemed to taunt Noah, from the eerie yellow glow of the streetlights to the sharp, pointed edges of the fence posts. Every step he took echoed in his ears, reminding him how his father had died here. Finally, he reached the Williams' front gate. He wasn't expecting cars to be lined up in the driveway and in the street. Light poured out of the windows, and inside Noah could see what looked to be a party. Well-dressed strangers exchanged solemn glances and probably just as solemn words over glasses of wine.
Noah almost turned around in that moment. Only one thought stopped him: if he didn't do this now, he never would. Each step felt like a death sentence as he dragged himself up to their door. Steeling his nerves, he rang the doorbell. The faintest remnants of the bruised, bloody knuckles of that night still lingered on his left hand. He prayed no one noticed. He wasn't here to cast suspicion on himself. He was here to pay his respects and to catch a glimpse, however small, of the life he'd never had.
He took another deep breath in as he waited."1, 2, 3," he chanted in his head while he held it. He didn't begin to breathe again until the door swung open.

Romy tossed her cereal bowl in the sink and ran to the bathroom to do one last makeup check before departing for the Williams' home. Looking in the large, round mirror, she noticed that her mascara was once again smeared across her face. But she wasn't tearing up out of sadness. This was straight fear eating her up inside. Only because of the unknown. Enough, Rom, she told herself. Just get your ass to the party.
She left her apartment, making sure the door was locked behind her two, three, four times. She hopped in her car and plugged in her aux cord. Pandora. Aretha Franklin radio. The radio station Thomas had playing over the speakers in the office. It just seemed fitting for today.
When Romy pulled into the Williams' driveway, she sat in her car for more time than was probably necessary. She wasn't nervous; she had been coming to these dinner parties for years. She was closer than close to the Williams family, so that wasn't what made her hesitate. It was the fact that this wasn't going to be the normal dinner. There would be more people. There would be undeniable tension between everyone. "Beh, questo sta andando a succhiare," she whispered to herself.
Romy let herself in, which was pretty much the norm these days. She immediately noticed that there were more people than usual, exactly as she suspected. Carrying the glass bowl of fruit salad she brought as a dish to pass, Romy headed to the kitchen. When she opened the door, she realized that three familiar faces already occupied the space. Kathleen, Michael, and Ash. So as to not disturb a "family moment," she turned around, heading for the door.

I'm still here if you all are! The site as a whole has been really quiet lately, but that seems to be picking up. I'll be messaging around in the next few days checking in with everyone and confirming secrets with everyone who needs one and all that!
