Torne Ruska looked at Araluen, "Home? Really? In the backquarters of Greatreef City, where most mermen and Aquelins live? Those were the first targets... We have no home anymore... Damn humans and kuo-toas made sure of that..."
"So where do we go?" He hadn't thought about it, but it was true....their home was destroyed. Not that there was much waiting for him back there...but still.... Araluen looked back up at Torne, the young triton feared that all of this was hitting Torne the worst and Araluen had no clue how to make his friend feel better. He felt pretty lousy at this moment. Here he was, messing up the plans time after time, getting himself put in danger just because of his carelessness...and the worst part, he couldn't bring any help to the person he cared about most. Just what type of friend was he? Araluen felt something warm and hot run down his face and he lifted his fingers to brush it away. His eyes widened when he noticed that tears were falling down his face, he quickly turned away from Torne and brushed them away as best as he could.
Torne Ruska put a hand on Araluen's shoulder, trying to be comforting, "I don't know... find a desrted island somewhere in the four seas? Go to our destroyed home and establish a small safe house? It's possible, but too many humans and kuo-toas..."
Araluen desperately wanted to lean into that touch. He had come to a scary conclusion.... "I...I-" he took in a deep breath and let it back out, trying to find the courage to continue. "I...I think...we should travel alone." he whispered softly, not able to look Torne in the eyes, he squeezed his own shut, trying to stop the tears before they fell. "I'll only bring you trouble...." he forced out in another whisper.
Torne Ruska blinked at Araluen, then suddenly burst out laughing, "Don't be so hard on yourself Lue! The fact that you bring me trouble, actually gives me something to do that's not boring! You bring muggers, I beat the crap out of them to entertain myself! This is what I need sometimes... Your own trouble that I can solve..." He grinned, showing that sharp row of his.
Araluen blinked back at Torne. "W-what's so funny?" he said, his nose being all runny. "Me being here puts your safety at risk. I'm not really good at anything so I can't do anything. What if because of me, you get hurt. Do you know how I'd feel? Knowing that it would be all my fault?" he said, still not believing that he could be smiling at the thought of having to save his ass over and over again. It would drive anybody else bonkers!
Torne Ruska stopped laughing, but continued to grin all the same, "You're not the one that went to prison... I'm more at risk than you... I look less human than you, thanks to my teeth and eyes... Heck, just me being me puts your safety at risk when I smell blood! Protecting you is what keeps me sane and reminds me that despite my past and looks, there's still someone willing to be my friend."
Araluen raised a hand and lightly bonked Torne on the head. His face was a light pink. "Doofus. Of course I am willing to be your friend. And if you hide your big pearly whites and get contacts, you could pass as human any day. For me it's a little bit harder. I would have to dye my hair and, hide my birthmarks. I would have to completely change how I look. And who cares about a past. This is the now, so...so...quit being a dumbass!" he chuckled softly.
Torne Ruska blinked and smiled, mocking being offended, "Oh, I'm the dumbass?" He put an arm around Araluen's torso and started rubbing his knuckles on the top of the triton's head, "That's what you get!"
Araluen laughed and pushed at Torne's chest to make him stop. "Alright Mr. I'm-buff-and-can-do-what-ever-I-want-to-poor-unsuspecting-tritons." He said trying to mimic Torne's voice but failed horribly. "One would think you are taking advantage of poor little ol' me." he said fluttering his eye-lashes in a comical way.
Torne Ruska stopped the noogie, but did not let go of Araluen, "Why would I take advantage of you? I'm supposed to protect you, not harm you." He laughed, messing up the triton's hair before letting go.
Araluen smiled as he was laughing, trying to fix his hair. "Oh I don't know, maybe it's because of my good-looks....more maybe my charms?" he said funnily. "Or maybe because I am just oh so wonderful at telling jokes." he said with even more laughter.
Torne Ruska chuckled, "Yeah, yeah," He pushed the triton in the water and smiled. He looked up at the sky, which would always look so bright despite the times they were in...
Araluen swam to the surface and glared before laughing. "What, there are many people that find me Hi-larious!" he said elongating the word. He pushed his soaking wet hair out of his face once more before looking up a the sky with Torne. "Bet you never thought this would be going on when you got out did ya?" he asked softly.
Torne Ruska scoffed, "Believe me, I knew that this was going to happen when I noticed that there were more Aquelins, mermen, merrowfolk and others than humans and kuo-toa inside... I smelled something fishy, pun not intended..."
Araluen nodded. "Well, you do have a nose for these types of things." he said. He started laughing a little at his lame joke. "But all joking aside, besides running away, what should be do? Like, what's our back up plan if running away doesn't work?"
Torne Ruska shrugged, "I'm just gonna wait it out... I can defend myself, even if it means taking the life of someone else... and if things go wrong, I'm just gonna stay a shrak for the rest of my life."
Araluen looked over at Torne. "I wish I could turn into a fish." he sighed. "But then I would have to worry about you eating me." he chuckled.
