Jess looked up from the unconscious Indian laying upon the ground before the men of Hell on Wheels and wondered as to who they were. Patrick Porter was traveling with his family in search of a new and better life, Sven Hansen from Sweden had recently come to the new world with his family, joining the caravan shortly before it parted for the Northwestern territories. Bob Durnum and his brother Alex are former outlaws who had only recently giving up their villainous ways for the prospect of greater fortune in the Sawtooth mountain range. The Willard family who had remained in their wagon all throughout the commotion were a typical American family. The whores who had run away from former lives remained in their wagon, though Missy Reynolds and Beverly Mills watched on with great interested in the new man in town. Reverend Miller was quickly approaching the men standing around the young Indian brave, the pretty male youth in his care stayed behind also.

Walking briskly to the gang of men surrounding the Indian the reverend pushed his way through and spoke. "You must not do harm to this poor youth. Don't you understand his soul is being controlled by the devil? We must have pitty on him. I can calm his brutal ways." The reverend turned his head toward Jess as he spoke his first words, "I don't know anything about that Rev." Jess looked up from beneath his hat before walking back to his horse. "Please Mr?" Alex Durnum asked. "Anderson. Jesse Anderson, just call me Jess." The starnger retorted. His brother Bob knowing what his younger sibling was about to suggest chimed in, "Please Mr. Anderson stay and join our train. We could use another strong hand around the town. Jess wasn't quit sure what the shady character standing before him meant by his suggestion, but somehow he did not like the tone. It was for this gut feeling more then anything else which made up Jess' mind to join Hell on Wheels.
