A vast range of fauna inhabit the World; most of the animals presented are notably chimeras or crossbreeds of two real world animals.


Badgerfrog — Green and brown frog with a trim of white fur.
Firefly — Bio-luminescent flying insect.
Flying bison — Large, flying mammals sacred to Air Nomads as the orAginal Airbenders.
Hermit crab — Crab with a shell-switching lifestyle.
Ring-tailed winged lemur — Small animal closely related to winged lemurs.
Winged lemur — Flying black and white lemurs kept as pets.


Arctic hen — Arctic bird bred for its meat in the Southern Water Tribe. Nearly identical in taste to its swamp counterpart, the possum chicken.
Arctic hippo — Mammal that lives in the South Pole and is hunted for its blubber.
Arctic seal — Swimming mammals that live in the South Pole.
Buffalo yak — Four-legged, furry, horned mammal used for transportation.
Cuttlefish — Used to make paint that is applied for ceremonial markings.
Fish — Various species are typically relied on for food in the Water Tribes.
Koala otter — Oceanic mammal with gray fur and large ears.
Ming snake — Snake that lives in the South Pole; known to bite humans.
Octopus — Cephalopod that lives in the sea.
Otter penguin — Penguin with four flippers used for sledding.
Ox goat — Large, four-legged herbivore.
Polar bear — Non-hybridized arctic creature, native to the Southern Water Tribe. Bones used in crafting weapons and pelts for carpets.
Polar bear dog — A large, four-legged wild carnivore; it was historically feared and hunted by the Water Tribe, but can be tamed.
Polar dog — Large dog; kept in Southern Water Tribe as pets.
Polar leopard — White leopard found at the poles; used for clothing in Southern Water Tribe.
Seal — A mammal whose skin is used to build tents.
Tiger seal — Striped brown seal; hunted for meat.
Sea sponge — Aquatic invertebrate.
Turtle seal — Brown seal with a hard shell.
White hamster — Small, white rodents.
Wolf — Beast found in the polar areas of Earth including the North and South Poles.


Ant — Small insects that live in large colonies.
Armadillo lion — Armadillo and lion cross.
Badgermole — Enormous, subterranean blind mammals; the original earthbenders.
Bear — A large brown, non-hybrid mammal known to hibernate; extremely rare.
Beetle worm — Worm and beetle hybrid, sometimes used in soups.
Blue jay — Bird with blue feathers.
Boarcupine — Large wild boar covered in sharp, detachable spines.
Bumble fly — Buzzing, flying insect whose name suggests that it is a cross between a bumble bee and a fly.
Buzzard wasp — Enormous flying insects inhabiting the Si Wong Rock.
Cabbage slug — Destructive agricultural pest.
Camelephant — Four-legged mammal with a long nose; used for transportation.
Canyon crawler — Insectoid, six-eyed, omnivorous creatures native to the Great Divide.
Cat — Fluffy white cat with green eyes, slim beige cat with patches of brown, or feline with beard-like facial features.
Cat owl — Large, predatory bird with cat-like face.
Catgator — Stocky, river-dwelling reptile named for its catlike barbels.
Chameleon — Small, color-changing lizard with yellowish eyes and a crest on its head.
Chicken — Flightless bird raised for food and eggs.
Creeping slime — An "algaelike mass that crawls up the walls of the sewers in Omashu".
Dog — Four-legged, generally domesticated mammal.
Dove — White birds related to pigeons.
Dragonfly — Flying, serpentine lizards resembling dragons.

Eel hound — Amphibious, four-legged creature; used for transportation on land and water.

Hopping llama — Presumably a llama that can hop, as the name implies.
Hoppy possum — Cross between a frog and a possum.
Hybrid pig — Includes the wooly-pig, moo-sow, picken, pigster, pig deer, and bull pig.
Jackalope — Jackrabbit with large antlers.
Leech-a-pillar — Leech and caterpillar cross.
Lop-eared rabbit — A nimble rabbit with extraordinarily long ears.
Meadow vole — Small white rodent.
Ostrich horse — Large brown bird; used for transportation.
Platypus bear — Bear with a large bill and flat tail; lays edible eggs.
Poodle monkey — Domesticated simian pet.
Possum chicken — A possum and chicken cross; lives in swamps.
Prickle snake — A snake that can inhabit areas like sleeping bags.

Saber-tooth moose lion — Moose and lion cross; cubs are non-aggressive but mature females are very protective.
Scorpion — Poisonous insect found in deserts.
Screeching bird — White bird with piercing, shriek-like call.
Sea vulture — A scavenger bird that inhabits the western coast of the Earth Kingdom.
Serpent — A serpent-like sea monster.
Se tu — Large green catfish.
Scorpion bee — Stinging, swarming, flying insect.
Shirshu — Large, eyeless mammal with a pink, star-shaped nose. Has a very keen sense of smell used for tracking and navigation.
Singing groundhog — Small, brown, furry rodent with musical call.
Skunk bear — The cross of a skunk and a bear.
Skunk fish — Foul-smelling, oily fish.
Sooty copper fritillary — An orange-yellow butterfly.
Sour beetle — The only thing giant gilacorns would not eat. Legend has it that the beetle-headed merchants' headpieces were made to look like these because of constant threat from the gilacorns.
Sparrowkeet — Small colorful birds, sometimes kept as pets.
Spider — Eight-legged, web-weaving arachnid.
Spider snake — A spider and snake hybrid with ten eyes.
Spider wasp — A cross between a spider and a wasp. Known to have inhabited Yu Dao.
Turkey duck — Turkey and duck cross.
Unagi — Enormous eel that inhabits the South Sea near Kyoshi Island.
Viper bat — Serpent-like creatures with bat wings found in caves.
Wolf — A rare non-chimerical animal, a wolf lives in a pack and can be used for bloodbending practice.
Wolfbat — Large, snub-nosed bats found in caves.
Wood frog — Frog found in swamps with medicinal properties.


Aardvark sloth — Anteater and sloth cross.
Armadillo bear — Large bear with a hard, segmented shell.
Boarcupine — Large wild boar covered in sharp, detachable spines.
Camelephant — Elephant and camel cross, an old Fire Nation dance is named after it.
Cavehopper — White arthropod with four legs.
Clam — Water-dwelling mollusk; easily affected by pollution.
Dragon — Large, horned reptile with a long body; the original Firebenders.
Dragon moose — Dragon and moose cross.
Duck — Farmed bird; often roasted.
Eagle hawk — A cross between an eagle and a hawk. Both birds with sharp eyesight.

Two-headed fish — Mutated fish found in polluted waters of Jang Hui River.

Curly-tailed blue nose — Creature resembling a primate; seen without face.
Forest Spirit — Supernatural entity who watches over the forested regions of the northwestern Earth Kingdom.
Giant wolf — Creature identical to an actual wolf with the exception of its gargantuan size.
Hei Bai — Spirit of a forest that can appear as both a black and white monster and a panda bear.
Knowledge Seekers — Fox-like spirit assistants of the knowledge spirit Wan Shi Tong.
La — Fish that is the Ocean Spirit and resides at the Spirit Oasis at the North Pole.
Tui — Fish that is the Moon Spirit and resides at the Spirit Oasis at the North Pole.
Spirit World firefly — Small insect capable of emitting a small light.
Elephant rhino — A cross between an elephant and a rhinoceros.
Flying boar — The symbol of the Beifong family.
Lion elephant — Presumably, a cross between a lion and an elephant.
Lion turtle — A cross between a lion and a turtle.
Mongoose lizard — A cross between a mongoose and a lizard.
Pheasant squirrel — A cross between a common pheasant and a squirrel.
Phoenix — A large bird commonly associated with the element of fire.
Poodle pony — A cross between a poodle and a pony that can do tricks.
Rhino lion — A cross between a rhino and a lion.
Snail sloth — A cross between a snail and a sloth, and the slowest creature in the World.
Spider cat — A cross between a cat and a spider.
Spiderfly — A cross between a spider and fly that sometimes gets caught in its own web.
Squirrel — A small or medium-sized rodent.
Two-headed rat viper — A cross between a rat and a viper, with an additional head.
Walrus yak — A cross between a walrus and a yak.
