Something however broke his thoughts. A rather formal call for him, using his rank and last name. Turning his eyes instantly saw the rank markings of a Lieutenant and from habit alone he came to attention and saluted. They certainly had drilled somethings into him. It was During the salute he noticed actually who it was. He almost did not notice who she was, what with the more confident regal look, and the aura adding to the package.
"Lieutenant Drake, indeed we have been acquainted before... my audacity to hitch a ride made sure of that" he said, his tone of voice level and calm. Just like his aura calm and never imposing at all. "I look forward to serving the platoon and the squad Ma'am". In the back of his mind Kai was starting to wonder if he was being too formal, but then again this first day, the ceremony was all about formalities. Besides any officer who did not like too much formality would normally just come out and say so.
She glanced over to the end of the grounds past the people to see the sniper from the SDU yelling at her other hitch-hiker. For a moment she thought about joining in on the fun but decided since he wasn't in her platoon there wasn't any reason for her to intervene, what a pity, she was looking forward to whipping the rat into shape after that card game. She turned her attention back to what was important.
"Sergeant Alkard, Specialist Cavelier, gather your squad the ceremonies will be commencing soon and we don't want to be embarrassing ourselves on the first day." Ethelyn gave preparation orders as it appeared the crowds were beginning to settle into line.

āWhat? Did you say something?ā Anora piped up at the comment Artemis had made, interrupting her rant about the mornings events.
āEh? Oh uhā¦ no,ā he cleared his throated and looked at her more thoughtfully, āSo you saw Daniel naked, itās not like itās the first time, there was that mission in Alastar.ā
Anora growled and gave Artemis a slight kick in the shin, making him wince as he grabbed the spot in surprise and pain, āThat was different! It was dark andā¦,ā she blushed a deep scarlet as if lit on fire, āā¦and I was more focused on you.ā Now it was Artemisā turn to blush. Her hand slipped up her side and grazed his.
āAhem!ā a near-by sergeant coughed aloud, one of Artemisā aids; heād glanced over his shoulder and must have heard them as he was rather taken aback by the colonels actions in such a place. Artemis was reminded of when and where they were but still shot the sergeant a dirty look and jerked his head to the side, signaling for the man to get lost. As the soldier saluted and departed into the crowd Artemis crossed his arms and swallowed hard before letting out a grunt, āWell uhā¦ you knowā¦ lieutenantā¦ if you find that, uh, the third year floor arrangements arenāt to your liking you could always use my private wash room, if that would make you feel more comfortable I mean.ā She looked down and began to squeak out and OK before another voice piped in a greeting.
āHey there Anora, morning sir!ā it was Daniel and he waved in a friendly and completely aloof sort of way.
Anoraās mood instantly worsened and she ground out a āMorning, Lieutenantā¦ā be froe turning more stock toward Artemis, āSir, weāll discuss your generosity later, sir, Iāve got to get to my unit.ā and began marching away from the two leaving a rather heavily sighing Artemis and a very confused Daniel in her wake.
With question marks practically popping out his head he cast his gaze to Artemis with his head cocked slightly to one side, āDid I miss something?ā
āApparently someone forgot to use the occupied sign on the fifth floor todayā¦ any idea who?ā Daniel came back to reality and chuckled scratching his head with slight embarrassment, or was it pride, Artemis couldnāt tell, āJeez, Dan, at least act like youāre an officer every now and then.ā Dan saluted sternly but his broad grin never wavered.
With an exasperated inhale Artemis turned to look at the stage that had been erected for the instructors and battalion staff in the middle of the courtyard. While the teachers were all seated on a raised section at the back there were six chairs prominently placed forward on the patio, just behind a podium. It was here that the five Generals of the Battalion would sit, along with the headmaster of the Academy. For all legal rights the headmaster maintained the final control of the school, however for all political intents and purposes it was the five generals who were in charge at the school, and the head of those five who was in command of every cadet on that field. Again Artemis felt the vertigo press in on him.

The morning was slightly chilled, with a dampness clinging to the grass, still warm as was expected for the new born fall that crept over the southern lands. It was a quarter to eight by the time all the last of the cadets had come from the dorms to stand in the parade grounds now, a muddle of uniformed young men and women preparing to begin their journey into adulthood. The actual start of term was not to commence for another hour, however they had been roused early to ensure everyone was in their right place. Of course sour news for the city to the south had most of the lips in the field flapping relentlessly. The evening before the Emperor had collapsed at a state dinner with the nobles from across the nation. Heād been rushed to the nearby hospital and was currently resting there, being treated for exhaustion. Still the news had the students on edge, as it always did when the Emperor was reported to have been in some form of danger. Still life resumed as it always had, and the students had far greater thoughts bearing their minds toward the Earth with the impending ceremony. It was their first inspection, their first showing of what they had to offer the nation, their first test at the school. True they were new blood, and at almost every other academy they would have not had such a ceremony until a few days if not weeks into the year when the students had been given time to be properly instructed on the formations and uniforms they were to keep up. However Archon, as it is always said, is not a normal academy. Here the students were provided with the handbook before they ever arrived and were expected to have diligently studied the basics of drill they would be executing that day. Even the most lax of students at the academy would not forsake this, they may have put it off until the last minute but they would know how not to fail. If they didnāt they wouldnāt be at Archon in the first place. as the large clock struck eight the cadets began to move ever closer to their proper place, discussing with one another how to properly fall in when the time finally came.

The slight chill of the first September morning had Desmond rather thankful, the full uniform he was forced to wear consisted of not just the officers uniform and medals as well as ribbons and cords of his typical formal attire but as Battalion Commander he also wore a large black cape that covered half of his whole body, the seal of the Academy embodied in gold and silver on his shoulder. His cap was more trimmed than that of the other generals which was saying quite a lot and his over-all appearance was more regal than most thought a man only twenty years old could bear. And yet as he stood there on the patio, the other Generals arriving as well, his demeanor was more of a young man who felt it was far too early for this sort of show. He looked to Kayle with an apparent apology stinging his eyes before turning to again survey the cadets again as the clock struck the hour. One hour to go, and where the hell is the headmaster? h thought as a third year officer came rushing to the stage and came to his side, whispering in his ear. He sighed heavily in disappointment.

āEight oāclockā¦ā Artemis commented to no one in particular as the clock rang out, āCaptain! Fall them in please.ā
The Captain looked at Artemis quizzically, āAre you sure sir? Weāve got about half an hour before the headmaster speaks.ā
āIād like to ensure that they get it right so weāll fall them in now and fix any idiots who screw things up. Then when things get rolling weāll be set.ā
The captain didnāt argue any further and just shrugged, heading to his post and taking a deep breath, āCompany! Fall in!ā he called out, his voice echoing around the grounds for all of Alpha to hear. Daniel looked over as the four platoon sergeants all to their place before the Captain, saluted, and then turned on their heels, stepping out and over before finally resting in position for the first squad of each platoon to form up. All the Sergeants roared the same order to their platoon as the Captain had for the company, and the first squad set up their line the same way, stepping off the Sergeant and counting their paces to the proper location. From there all the Cadets should know to find their locations based on where the first squad leader was standing.
Caspian found his place standing beside his fire-team leader swiftly after the call rang out, knowing the drill form his days in the Polaris school which used the same basic set up. He looked at the man who stood beside the Captain, watching his Company like a hawk. So that was the infamous Alpha Company Commander, Artemis Halken, eh? He allowed himself the small moment to size the man up; did he look like much of a fighter? Yes, and he was wearing a sword, but no visible crest. So he was self-taught? Could I take him? the thought entered his head without him even realizing it but as his eyes fell on the small glint of the circle on the manās neck he couldnāt believe his own folly. He was far away but Caspian could still make out the color, even from there; an incredibly brilliant silver, almost white in its reflectionā¦ a platinum pin. He didnātā need to see the letter to know that the rumors were true. His company commander was ranked S.
The Sergeantās each reported on their squads status (how many absent) and called out to the platoon sergeant, who turned on his heal, saluting the Captain. In succession they reported in, until the last was saluted to and lowered their salute. Finally the Captain turned and saluted the company commander, saying something Caspian and the others couldnāt hear. After a returned salute the Colonel stepped forward and stood straight, Caspian could swear he was glaring right at him, but he also suspected everyone else could have promised the same thing. Stranger still was he was sure theyād all be telling the truth. The man spoke, seemingly at a standard level and yet his voice pierced the air and reached everyoneās ears, āPost!ā
Like clockwork the Platoon leaders and Sergeants switched places, the lieutenants now standing at the head of the ranks with the sergeants behind. āStand at ease!ā at that the more prepared students slackened slightly, though they never let their eyes leave the man standing at the front of their ranks, āNowā¦ weāve some time before the official inspection begins, so Platoon leaders, sergeants, look your cadets over, make sure they donāt embarrass our company. When youāve completed the inspection put your men at easeā¦ā a pause to ensure he was heard, āPlatoon Leaders, Assume command.ā
All four lieutenants resounded with a snap to, āSir!ā and turned on their heels, each issuing various orders to stand at attention, for the platoon staff and sergeants to fall out and check the cadets over, for the cadets to ensure they didnāt screw up, and various other demands. This was how military school worked, so Caspian decided heād have to get used to it.
Daniel ordered for the sergeants to begin inspecting the cadetās uniforms first, then to make sure they knew how to stand properly and such. Turning himself he headed over to the Colonel and stretched his neck, āgeez, colonel, donāt you think you could have warned us?ā
āYou know there are no warnings in the real world.ā
āYou do realize this is school right?ā
āMost of these cadets will be on the battlefield someday, better they be disciplined now right?ā
Daniel rubbed his head again, āWhatever you say, Artemis, itās you company. Alienate them all you want.ā
āSpeaking of alienating, donāt you have some cadets to attend too?ā
āYeah, yeah, Iām goināā Daniel commented dismissively as he headed back to his unit and began inspecting his troops, correcting flaws on the uniforms of several young first years. He came ot second squad and looked the mover. He first turned to Rey, āSup, Sarge? Good holiday?ā he commented. Caspian gulped, this guy seemed too laid back to be an officer yet still seemed a good sort, but he still had one thing that made him hesitate to lighten up; the red cord the man wore was the sign of the SDU. They slang for those cords was āblood ropeā as they were said to really be white, but it was tradition to stain them red in the enemiesā blood after this first mission. Caspian highly doubted that, but still. He didnāt want to even think about trying to take the man as he had with the Colonel, that naivetĆ© was evaporated after his first splash of reality. Looking Caspian over the manās gaze stopped on his lapel which was slightly raised, āHmm, oddā¦ something wrong with the stitching?ā Daniel tried to smooth it out and instantly his expression changed, āNoā¦ not the stitchingā¦Cadet?ā
Caspian knew heād felt it and gulped, āUh, sorry sirā¦ just a good luck charm, never leave home without it.ā he explained with a sincere look, not a complete lie. Daniel was suspicious at first, and to be honest that look of extreme interest and doubt never left his eye even as he shrugged and looked him over the rest of the way.
āOkay Cadet, youāre good except for one thingā¦ā Caspianās pulse skipped, āYouāre hatā¦ should be tilted to the other side, right, not leftā¦ā Caspian nodded and made the adjustment. Daniel smiling the whole time and nodding at his competence, āOh, and next time leave the picture of your sweetheart at home.ā
āSi-Sir, yes, sir!ā
āGood lad!ā he slapped Caspian on the shoulder, almost knocking him over, āoops, sorry, forgot you must be a magus, sword threw me for a moment there.ā He commented before stepping up to the next in line. āIronclaw? Well, interesting nameā¦ uh, sorry to spoil youāre fun, Cadet, but that gauntlet isnāt exactly standard issue. Want to tell me why youāve got it on in uniform?ā he asked. Heād eventually approve the cadet having it and tell him he was just giving him hell but not without a few minutes of giving him the third degree. Finally he came to Michale, āCadet Searā¦ rumor has it you cheat at cardsā¦ is that true? Wait! Better question! How you teach me?ā Daniel would have to tell the cadets that every advantage, fairly won or not, must be taken in war, something theyād learn in time at Archon, regardless of Michaleās answer, though he would let him comment with a smile.
Caspian couldnāt really agree though, victory by any means wasnāt the way to go, because karma always bit you in the ass; at least in his experience. āMeekoā¦ what are you doing now?ā he wondered aloud.
Artemis stood by at the front, watching as the platoons did their thing. He turned to Delryn and cleared his throat, āCSM, do you mind taking fourth Platoon for the day? Lieutenant Winters looks like heās going to faint in second.ā It was more an order than a request and he left Delryn to get it done. He didnāt turn around as a man in a much more flashy uniform than any other stepped up beside him and looked out over the cadets. āGeneral.ā Artemis commented in greeting.
āOh, youāre not ignoring me?ā Desmond asked rather excitedly.
āWhat? Why would I be ignoring you?ā
āOh well, you know, I just figured youād want to look all cool and such in front of your new cadets is all.ā The General was making over exaggerated movements as he spoke with the Colonel, being rather loud.
āYouāre hopeless.ā
āAnd youāre too stiff! Oh well, Iām sure youāll lighten up after a few drinks, youāre of age now right?ā he hung over Artemisā shoulder much to the colonelās chagrin.
āAre you propositioning me, General?ā
āMaybe, what if I was?ā the General asked lewdly, finally eliciting a smile to break form the colonelās straight face, the general jumped back claiming victory with gusto.
āFirst, Kalen would have my head on a platterā¦ secondly; donāt you have a speech to give?ā
āAh! You had to bring that up!ā he flittered his thumbs with a shy face and posture, āHey, you wouldnāt be willing to give it instead would you?ā
āNo.ā
āWha-!ā you didnāt even consider it!ā
āNope, and I never willā¦ anyway, āhis voice lowered so as to ensure no one over heard, āwhere is the headmaster? He should have been here an hour ago? We canāt put this off for much longer, at this rate the alumni wonāt get their word in edgewiseā¦ and the new year starts at 0900, period, no exception.ā
The general straightened up, āHeās headed into the city, the Nobleās council called an emergency meeting.ā
āIs it that serious?ā Artemis asked, not really specifying what.
The General seemed to be well aware as to what he was revering though, āYeah, it isā¦ why do you think they called the Five to his side.ā
Artemis cursed, āHowās the old man?ā
āCome on, you can show a little more respect than that canāt you?ā
āWhat? I always call him Old Man. Is that a problem?ā
āWell yes!ā
āThen what should I call him?ā
āMaybe āYour Majestyā or āMy Emperorā! Itās not hard!ā the General sighed and returned his voice to a low level, having elevated it slightly, āHeās alright, they called us in the other day though, he wanted ot speak with the Five Apparentsā¦ two of which were absent.ā He cast a shady gaze at Artemis, āWhich reminds me, where were you last night? You did get the summons right?ā
āOh uh, yeah, I did but Anora had me take her to dinner in town to make up for a major screw up and well uh.ā
āUh, honestly, youād think that the number four in the line of succession could show a little more enthusiasm for the throne!ā
āOh, Iām still number four?ā
āI didnāt say thatā¦ you were downgraded, Maretta is the new number four, youāre five now. Thatās what you get for not showing up.ā The General added with a slight āitās your own damn faultā kind of tone.
Artemis, however, seemed un-phased, āSo who was there?ā
āLady Heritosh was already by his side when I arrived. But Lord Maretta had apparently come and went by then. Judith showed up too, but you were clearly indisposed and Marshal Octavian is at the western front right now.
āAhā¦ what did he want?ā
āWell he was mostly out of it, but the main thing was that he wanted to ensure we each knew that he had great hope for us all. The doctors didnāt know why but his condition just wasnāt improving.ā
āSo the exhaustion?-ā
āA ruse, itās just to keep the public from freaking out, they wouldnāt have been told anything if he hadnāt collapsed in a receptionā¦ and before you ask no, it wasnāt poison, they analyzed everything at the dinner, whatever this is itās natural.ā The Generals hardened face broke again just as it had when heād first came up to Artemis, āBut, the old gu- uh I mean, his Majesty is pretty tough, I have no doubt heāll pull through whatever this is, his aura was as strong as ever.ā
Artemis cursed, āIām suddenly regretting that delicious steak last night.ā
āOh, whereād you go?ā
āWhat? The situation is like this and youāre thinking about food-ā
āGeneral!ā a stern voice broke into their conversation as a woman approached, at the sight of her however Desmond moved behind Artemis.
āOh uh, hey there, Kalen. Whatās up? Do you need something?ā he asked with a sheepish look in his eyes.
Kalen put her hands on her hips and stared him down, āYes, actually, you! Youāve got a speech to make in five minutes, itās time you fall the Battalion in!ā she marched around Artemis and grabbed the Generalās arm, pulling him along with her as she headed back to the podium. āSorry, Colonel, weāll catch up later okay? Have thme fall in if you donāt mind.ā
āNo problem, you be careful and donāt let him slip away again Kalen!ā Artemis replied before turning back to his company, āCompany fall in!ā he called out. It was a simple matter of those how had moved getting back in place and his company was ready.
The General returned to the Podium, Caspian looking at him the whole way, heād noticed him approach as had most in the company and like most of the cadets was looking at him in disbelief. That moron in our battalion commander? that was clearly on the mind of most of the cadets ,however everyone who had been at the school before didnāt have that look at all and rather had a gaze of admiration and respect if they looked toward the man. Caspian thought it strange. The clock chimed again, a whole hour had passed without anyone knowing, and all four companies had fallen into place.
Stepping up to the Podium the General cleared his throat and tapped the microphone, āUhā¦ Ahem. Can, can you guys uh hear meā¦ i-is this thing. Oh, itās on? Good uh. Unfortunately the Headmaster is currently indisposed so we will be , uh, amending the schedule slightly , and Iāll make the opening remarks. Th-thank you.ā He cleared his throat again and spoke much more clearly this time, though Caspian was again at the moron stage, āWelcome, both new and old students of Archon Academy, to this the first day of the new term. Iād also like to welcome the many family and friends that have shown up today to support our new cadets. Theyāve come to show their pride in what youāve done, and that pride is well placed. Here, at our prestigious school, we become what most strive to dream of being. It is in these hallowed halls that so many of the greatest our Empire has ever known have found their calling, and it is my hope that you too will find yours here. The entrance selection has brought us the very best of you all, but this is not the end of your journey. No.ā
The General was certainly showing signs of split personality with is speech, as heād started barely able to make it through one sentence and yet the moment he began to focus he was fluent in a way Caspian never felt he could be before such a crowd, āThis is the very beginning, here you will strive, here you will compete, and here you will become the next leaders of this great and powerful nation. I wish you all the very best of luck, however I do so with the knowledge that of the hundreds standing before me, only a few dozen will ever cross this stage. All of you are capable of greatness, and indeed all of you will achieve it someday in your own way, but only those how are strong will graduate from this school. Never forget the pride you feel right now, standing in this crowd of th best of the best, because that is what will fuel you into the future, however do not be consumed by it, for that pride will drag you form our graces just as swiftly. It is-ā
Over the past few sentences a thunderous sound had been growing in the south east of the plaza and at last it crescendoāed to a deafening roar as a Vertilift appeared on the horizon, cresting over the mountain that separated the Academy and the Capitol. The Aircraft was painted with the Academy seal and colors and as it flew over the parade ground, sending several caps flying and skirts blowing, the vessel made to land at the clearing behind the companies. āUhā¦ it isā¦ ahem, excuse me for a moment.ā The General stepped down and moved forward to look out as the door on the Vertilift opened.
A man in a blue suit and with several military officials stormed out, marching rather hurriedly across the courtyard. Still being picked up by the microphone the generals voice echoed although a great deal quieter than during his speech, āHeadmaster, sir, youāve arrived.ā
The man didnāt answer and instead ascended to the stage and pulled the general aside, whispering in his ear with a blank face. The General was at first as clueless as the rest but as the man spoke to him, the others unable to hear a thing, Desmondās face changed from confusion to something akin to despair. The Man patted the generalās arm and moved to the Podium, āAhemā¦ I must apologize for my absence; and my untimely arrival.ā Those behind were whispering amongst themselves and was everyone else, all wondering what could be going on, āI am afraid I must dispense with the formalities as I have come with grave newsā¦ā every last whispering voice stopped abruptly as all ears leant to the man in the suit, āI regret to inform you all that our beloved Emperor Augustus VI has passed away as of 0617 this morning of apparent heart failureā¦ā
āWhat!?ā
He waited patiently for the Lieutenant to show up to him. He looked at his gauntlet that rest comfortable on his left hand and frowned at it. āThis should be good.ā He spoke under his breath. Rallen turned his attention to the fellow and listened to rather politely if anything to make up for the yawn from earlier. He lifted up his left arm a bit and shrugged at his question. āDidnāt read my file did you?ā He chuckled at the fellow and dropped his hand back to his side. āIād take it off but I do ever so much like living you know.ā He gave the man a smile as he walked on and turned back to the stage waiting what would come next.
Much like the walking around, he found the speech rather boring though the change of tone put a smile on his face. At a point he just sort of faded out from the speech going into his own little world in his head just waiting for it to be over to he could go home and leave from the peering eyes of his mother. He woke from his trance at the sound of the air ship coming in. He peered out to the exit looking to see the headmaster walk in and up to the stage. He listened to every word the man spoke it was clear by the entrance something was wrong. Hearing the news of the emperorās death his eyes turned serious as the crowd began to act up. He knew fully well what was to fallow the manās death and he kept his focused on the headmaster toning out the noise of the others.
"(Wow, is this going to happen the my in the future? Most likely not, but it's great to dream; it looks glorious and yet, at the same time nerve wrecking to stand up onto the podium as such and talk in great lengths of this school, yet as well must not be from wars and uprisings and falls that time has slowly whittled down, corroding my very soul. I don't think i could handle this, so I shouldn't try to get my hopes up and aim for such a high role, I just have to get through my first battle. As my father used to say when I was young, at the time I didn't know what it meant, but I do now... 'You're only strong when you decide to spare a life, not take it away.' I learned from that greatly, although in my mind I feel the inkling of morbidness from this as well, 'when taking someone's life, the choice is yours yet the possibility is going to be high. Will you be able to sleep at night, or not at all?' As this other comment struck into my mind. I don't understand both of them, yet individually they make sense. Why?...)"
Karu goes through several and more thoughts in his mind thinking deeply as he further proves himself wrong again and again with counter arguments going throughout his mind. His eyes as slowly shifting color at a rapid, but consistent rate:red, green, and yellow; as his hair is long enough his face is staring to the ground with his hands to his head as the neighbor cadets look at him with worry and try to shake him back to reality. Karu wakes up from such conversation with himself and his hair covering his eyes just enough that no one is able to see them where Karu just barely arrived back into the ending of the loud thunderous and deafening cheers as it quickly died down. Looking back to the others he shifts his hair to the right and his eyes are normal again as he looks at the commander once more upon looking at the headmaster whispering to the Battalion Commander, Karu looking in confusing where he has been the last few moments almost forgot to tell his neighbors that he was fine, letting them know to ease their worry and look at him with a uneasy smile still, makes them feel better but not that much.
The last words Karu listens to, āI regret to inform you all that our beloved Emperor Augustus VI has passed away as of 0617 this morning of apparent heart failureā¦ā Looking at the headmaster with shock and surprise leaving himself speechless with no words to convey as he just stares on.
Hardly anyone noticed the silver haired teen when she descended the steps to attend the ceremony. Hardly anyone paid any attention to her as well. Almost as if she was invisible.
That was because this girl seemed to lack a visible aura that were otherwise the identification needed by humans. Even without looking, any aura could be felt by any pro efficient Magus and locate the person. But it seemed that Elphida's almost non-existant aura was unable to be detected by most of the greenhorn students, and even the higher ranking ones. It worked well for her though, since she really didn't enjoy being stared at with mocking eyes.
Yes. She wasn't a Guardian, wasn't a Magus, she was just nothing. She had no strength, no magical power either. People just couldn't leave her alone without drilling that into her mind.
Elphida had her arms crossed and was tapping her finger as she waited in line with her squad.
'First Platoon under Leader Daniel Williams, Squad Two, Class E, Rank Cadet, Squad Leader Rey Vandelion.' she repeated over in her head, after memorizing it in her head the past few days when she was alone in her room. Which reminded her... when was her roommate arriving?
She took a glance at the members of her squad, a white haired male with what seemed to be a gauntlet in his hand and two black haired males, one looking rather wirey and unkept, the other was just as slim and had a sword by his belt. Although both of them seemed weak, but Elphida would bet her virginity that they were far more capable than she was. That was an easy victory, seeing as how Elphida could hardly do anything with magic.
Inspection was carried out by a seemingly happy-go-lucky man...who was in fact their General, Daniel Williams. She watched him go around inspecting each student from the squad, a few smiles here and there and a short moment with a Lieutenant ranked student, speaking as if they'd known each other for years.
As expected, the General walked right past her without giving her a second glance. Her presence was totally diminished by the fact that her aura was non-existant. She sighed and tapped her fingers again, glancing down at herself to make sure she seemed presentable despite not being examined.
Elphida had chosen to wear the uniform with a slight adjustment to the pants. While most other students tucked their pants into the inside of their boots, Elphida decided to loosen the edges of the pants, making them fall straight down as if like a smaller hakama. This allowed her to wear her knee-high boots without feeling uncomfortable.
'Just a minor modification. It feels tight and restrictive.' she went through her lines if she was ever questioned about it, though is was partly the truth. She ran a hand through the sheathe of the Archon Academy standard issued sword, hopefully that would prove enough...unless they made her fight.
After waiting, finally the Headmaster arrived. Listening intently to the Headmaster was one thing to Elphida, but hearing those last lines shocked her to the very core.
'No...No way.'
āI regret to inform you all that our beloved Emperor Augustus VI has passed away as of 0617 this morning of apparent heart failureā¦ā
He tried his best to avoid stares from the cadets, and his laid back personality just had to kick in now, as he sat down and yawned a huge lot. He scratched the back of his head and as he placed his hands back down, he felt something similar. Something he had always toyed with every time he is bored, and whenever he felt like listening to his music. It was his MP3 player that hung lazily on his neck. He quickly noticed it and press the ON button, which musics then after followed, following smoothly into his ears, at the same time, able to hear the boring speech.
Suddenly, a big helicopter thing flew down, and who came out didn't really surprised Rey; given that he's very lazy. The headmaster stepped up on the stage, and announced something people would find Rey as weird; he wasn't shocked that the emperor died. Instead, he just stared at the cadets who all gasped and and turned their heads left and right, as if panicking, having no idea as to what to do. "Why is everyone so scared? Not like the whole entire nation's about to fall. Not to me, anyways." He mumbled under his breath. It can be clearly heard by the other sergeants and commanders, but they chose to ignore it. Reason? They knew he would replied with that. They had been with him long enough to know how he would react to these sort of things. Even he in his first year, seeing the accidental death of a cadet never piqued his interest; instead, sleeping did.
Seeing the old man announced that just made him more sleepier, and he wwas almost to the point where he could sleep right that instance and not wake up until it's over. But no, a friend sergeant of his attempted to have him stay awake by giving him one of those caffeine pills to make him stay awake. He swallowed one. And his eyes were slightly less heavy. "Least it did helped..." He again mumbled under his breath and waved his hand, small, but noticeable by his friend. He replied with a nod, and went back to standing firmly.
Rey sorta stood out in the crowd, seeing as he is the only one who was sitting down and yawning every moment. The cadets all either stared at him or laughed, but some thought of him as arrogant. But why would he care? Well, they got news from him. He never cared how people thought about him and he never will. Why? Cause screw them. This is his life, and ain't no one's about to tell him what to do.
Immediately, Rey spun his head left and right. Seems like emotions got the best of him, and it was later under control. His emotions are easily swayed by music, and the music which played just now was a depressing and arrogant rock music, which had him felt that way them. He'd only listen to his headphones when he wants to escape something boring, and also in fights; where his favorite musics will pump up his adrenaline, making his focus on attacks more better. He continued observing the cadets, whole paying the most attention at his squad, trying to burn their image into his mind so that he doesn't forget their faces; since he always forgets names.
---
Michale stood there as the lieutenant came through inspecting him "No sir just lucky, but its like I told her sir..Its only cheating if you get caught..."
He answered quickly before Daniel would move on again, then the waiting game started, he really hopped the next four years were not going to be like this to much, just standing around waiting for some speech but finally the speech came... and as it was given Suddenly a Vertlift had landed. Then there was whispering, and finaly someone else spoke...."And their goes any semblance of a normal four years i suppose at Archon..." Michale said out loud.sucking a bit of air through his teeth.
---
As the News was delivered Delryn stood there at attention as a few whispered behind him he spun around on his heals and gave a small quite but sharp bark. "I did not give you permission to talk you are still at attention...." before spinning around and standing in place.Delryn quickly began to think to himself. "The old man had died....that means someone else is going to be taking over the reigns and he knew two of the possible applicants." Delryn looked up to Artemis with a stare that could kill teh company needed to be dismissed to their rooms and the staff needed to take a day to move forward and discusse what this meant on their end....

Desmond stepped forward, a green seal forming at his mouth, as he spoke, āBattalion, Atten-tion!ā his voice boomed like an explosion, nearly making Caspian cover his ears in surprise. However he swiftly snapped too as did everyone else, the family members growing quiet. After a moment theGeneral nodded to the Headmaster to continue
āI am amiss to say that this is not the only ill news I bringā¦ Immediately following His Majestyās death Imperial Marshal Octavian was to rise to the throne, however at the time she was serving courageously as is her duty on the western frontā¦ where sh-she fell.ā Not a soul in the crowd was without a shocked look, an unprecedented crisis had just befallen their nation and not a soul there was foolish enough to believe elsewise, āthe Nobleās Council has just concluded an emergency meetingā¦ and as this situation is of gravest importance has declared a state of emergency for the Empire, placing all power into the hands of Parliament for a time of seventy two days.ā The murmuring returned although much more lightly now. Given a moment to breathe the man continued.
āNo doubt many of you are wondering why I am telling you all this, as most of you would have found out immediately following the ceremony otherwise. Allow me to explain, as due to the istuation the standard lines of succession have been broken, which will directly affect each and every one of you.ā Caspian was not an ignorant person and the moment this began he could tell where it was heading, but no, they wouldnāt, would they? āThe Nobleās Council has deliberated and after consulting myself and other heads of education the Empire over have decided to enact the Rite of the Challenge of Succession, to begin,ā he looked back to Desmond, why Caspian was unsure however still he waited for the General to nod before continuing, āTo being immediately.ā Voices rose again but the Headmaster spoke over them this time, just barely heard, āAs such, the typical ceremonial opening of the school shall be forgone. All cadets are here by ordered to report to their respective commanders and begin their training. Andā¦ Quiet! Quiet please!ā
The other generals stood, reacting with almost instant realization at what the Headmaster had in mind, they didnāt look happy, āAlso, as a special edict to the standard laws of Archon Academy and in accordance with the Rite of Succession the following rules will be amended. 1. All freshmen will be permitted to issue personal and squad challenges, as opposed to the standard wait of half a semester. 2. Merit standings hold however as of today all merits and demerits will begin being counted toward the Rite instead of being calculated internally. 3. All students must participate in the Rite.ā He raised his arms and those sitting behind him stood, āAs of this moment I declare this term at Archon Academy to be open. Commanders, please take charge of your units and may the greatest of you succeed. May glory forever shine on our Empire!ā
Caspian was no doubt like the others as he slammed his fist over his heart like the others and cried out the same, āMay glory forever shine on our Empire!ā to the man before him, numb and unfeeling. He was still stuck on the death of the empire, and then the Rite of Succession? He couldnāt understand, he couldnāt process, and yet he knew at that moment that everything about the school heād heard was suddenly changed. It was suddenly a dozen times worse.
she had fallen asleep during the generals speech as she already knew what he was going to say.she still slept while the vertilift landed nearby and the headmaster walked up to the podium, only when he mentioned the death of their current emporeor did her eyes snap open. Suna wasnt bothered by it all all, hell she never even cared for the old man, her expression never changing. some of the cadets noticed this and whispered about it behind her back but she ignored it {'let them think what they want, is that why mother left'}thinking back to earlier.
Suna scanned the crowd before and behind her, watching everyones reaction to this "sad and shocking" news. looking back at the headmaster she already had a guess of what he would say next; the Rite of the Challenge to Succession. personaly Suna didnt approve of this being as she honestly didnt care for it, all it meant was that she was going to be forced into fighting opponets for something she didnt care enough to want nor didn she care for the cadets who were weak compared to her yet they always tried to fight her thinking they could beat a seeminly weak girl, Suna never understood this. to her those kind of battles were pointless, and she will only acknowledge the truly strong opponents who would actually put up a fight.
but unlike the others she wasnt the kind of person to initiate a fight only going for those who were left was more her style. Suna was so deep in thought she didnt realize that it was time to salute the headmaster and she missed her cue {'not that it matters, to hell with them all,let them think what they want'} a low growl escaped her lips as she waited for further orders.
The Headmaster gave out another name who died, Imperial Marshal Octavian had fallen in the western front. Why is everyone dying? Now they are putting power into Parliament. Mother will have to dedicate all her time to running the Empire for twenty-seven days. What in the world is to happen next?!
āThe Nobleās Council has deliberated and after consulting myself and other heads of education the Empire over have decided to enact the Rite of the Challenge of Succession, to begin,ā The Headmaster spoke using the glowing seal over his mouth so he could be heard amist the confusion.
Rite of the Challenge of Succession? Its only the start of the year and yet all this is happening!
She would hold her fist to her heart like the rest of the students and chant, "May glory forever shine on our Empire!" After the students began to talk she turned to Jana, who started blurting out statements, "What if your father has to be sent to the Western Front?" "Your mother is going to be so busy working in the parliament!" Lucy just simply hugged Jana and sat her head on Jana's shoulder. "In times of Chaos we must be ever so viligant and remain powerful."
As inspections began she was ruthless, pointing out the smallest of wrinkles. "Cadet, unless you have a reason for your unruly hair blocking your eyes I suggest you tie it up next time, you're lucky I don't make an example of you right here and cut it off with my sword, it would be a pity if my hand slipped." She taunted Karu, let her aura bite at his and left him speechless. "Watch your pants on the grass Cadet, their too big for you and grass stains may not appear obvious on the navy uniform but I can clearly see them, be sure to take care of that immediately following today's training." She shot at another Cadet by the name of Azyrion. She continued down the line until they were each completely searched for flaws, there would be none of that non-sense in her platoon.
When Desmond stepped up to the platform she was ready as ever and admired him from afar. It was unfortunate the Commander was taken, he was attractive with a quirky manner and had a way with words. While she prefered the strict command of a harsh leader she couldn't help but fawn over his way of tripping over his words before he began one of his riveting speeches. She hung onto every word, and was disappointed when the headmaster arrived to pick up the speech.
Ethelyn was shocked when the conversation turned dark as the headmaster made the announcements. She did her best to keep her men at attention but she could barely contain her own composure at this news. As the Rites to Succession were stated she went pale, the rites had not been called on for decades, centuries even, usually it was plain and simple. Why now? Her shock and fear subsided as a glimmer of an idea popped into her head. With the rites enacted anyone at the school could be the next successor to the throne. With that a smile came across her face.
"May glory forever shine on our Empire.ā She hissed with venom in her voice and a maniacal grin.
āI am amiss to say that this is not the only ill news I bringā¦ Immediately following His Majestyās death Imperial Marshal Octavian was to rise to the throne, however at the time she was serving courageously as is her duty on the western frontā¦ where sh-she fell.ā there was an air of shock hanging in the crowd. āthe Nobleās Council has just concluded an emergency meetingā¦ and as this situation is of gravest importance has declared a state of emergency for the Empire, placing all power into the hands of Parliament for a time of seventy two days.ā The murmuring returned although much more lightly now. This isn't true...it couldn't be. āThe Nobleās Council has deliberated and after consulting myself and other heads of education the Empire over have decided to enact the Rite of the Challenge of Succession, to begin,ā he looked back to Desmond, why Caspian was unsure however still he waited for the General to nod before continuing, āTo being immediately.ā Voices rose again but the Headmaster spoke over them this time, just barely heard, āAs such, the typical ceremonial opening of the school shall be forgone. They... had to participate no matter what? And people could challenge each other to fights?
Elphida was as good as dead in such an environment, to which she was thinking would be lenient until the Rite of Challenge of Succession came into play. Despite her dread, she crawled her hand to her chest and made a fist.
"May Glory forever shine on our Empire!" she chanted along with the others.
No doubt...the first day would be chaos after this.
He didn't really start paying attention until the news of the emperor hit. It was in that moment Kayle was happy he was sitting or he might have stepped out of line. The death of the emperor was not to be taken lightly, and for him to have died so suddenly from heart failure none the less. Instantly Kayle wished he could have been there for that medical procedure, but the medical professionals for the emperor would be specialists in cardio-vascular health in this case, not combat. He wanted the details, to be sure something hadn't gone wrong, perhaps an assassination plot had succeeded. His thoughts began to race as he went through the medical causes for heart failure.
The general's thoughts were ended abruptly as the headmaster turned the topic over to the matter of succession. For a moment Kayle looked visibly ill, the Rites of Succession, circumstances that would lead to competition between students which could very easily turn into a blood bath.
All students must participate that meant all students, cadets, sergeants, generals, even medical corps personnel would be forced to participate. As the Medical Corps general he couldn't help but worry that things would get out of hand. One would hope training and morals topped the human mind but Kayle knew from psychi evaluations for PTSD and other issues that some students were less stable than others and might take this challenge as an opportunity to snap or use their special skills for dark purposes. Kayle stood up and approached Desmond on the stage.
"Desmond." Kayle whispered, grabbing the other general's attention. "This is madness, the rites of succession are going to get innocent students killed. Not everyone is here for the glory of the empire or whatever patriotic bull he just tried to pull. Can't you just take the damn throne and be done with it?" He continued in a hushed voice trying to contain his anger at the situation and not draw attention to the two of them up on stage.
All these ideas flashed throw his head as he contemplated on what he should do. Then he had a thought and a light smile crossed his face. Sit back and uncover what it was everyone was after. Then from what he knew take out the power hungry ones and allow some one worthy take the crown someone with some damn sense as to stop this event from happening again. People where going to die this much was true, people who didnāt deserve it people who simply wanted to protect this country where going to die simply because itās allowed now. He looked up from his hand and looked over his fellow squad members. What was it they thought about all of this? Did they just want the power? Or maybe they were like him? He placed his hand on his chest like all the others but no words came from his mouth no chant and no praise. As far as he was concerned this country had given his life up for forfeit along with the lives of all the students brought to this school.
Yet again, a yawn took his mouth. These death things were getting really boring. He looked around the place with his tired expression, and the worrying and gasping of the cadets actually proved less effect to him. It only made him feel as if watching a dramatically cheesy show where everyone over exaggerates over just about anything. If he was really in a theater, he would've forgotten his popcorn and drink, and will fall asleep midway through the movie. But this ain't happening, as the voice of his friend made him realize he's in reality.
āthe Nobleās Council has just concluded an emergency meetingā¦ and as this situation is of gravest importance has declared a state of emergency for the Empire, placing all power into the hands of Parliament for a time of seventy two days.ā
Now what? A quick meeting of the 'council' and it had been decided? Shouldn't this be a grave matter to the Empire, and they should have had a meeting that solves literally everything? But instead they decided to rely on the Parliament. What an irresponsible 'council' this Empire has, Rey thought in his own imagination. Well, he might have been wrong, but still. Entrusting the throne to some stranger? Now that's really desperate.
āNo doubt many of you are wondering why I am telling you all this, as most of you would have found out immediately following the ceremony otherwise. Allow me to explain, as due to the situation the standard lines of succession have been broken, which will directly affect each and every one of you.ā
Well, he was right. They were about to entrust the throne to a stranger and they don't care about it. At least find someone worthy for the throne and make sure he's a good guy, dumb asses. He thought to himself. The council must have been desperate. Really, desperate to resort to that. Well, he wasn't in the position to decide that, so he just let it all go like the wind.
āAs such, the typical ceremonial opening of the school shall be forgone. All cadets are here by ordered to report to their respective commanders and begin their training. Andā¦ Quiet! Quiet please!ā
"Oh shit. Something's 'bout to happen, and I ain't gonna like it." He mumbled, as the captains and commanders all froze and seemed as if they had an idea of what's about to happen. This time, though, he was curious. Since he was only here the second year, he wouldn't know what's about to happen. His eyes suddenly went a bit bigger, and he temporary killed the volume of his music.
āAlso, as a special edict to the standard laws of Archon Academy and in accordance with the Rite of Succession the following rules will be amended. 1. All freshmen will be permitted to issue personal and squad challenges, as opposed to the standard wait of half a semester. 2. Merit standings hold however as of today all merits and demerits will begin being counted toward the Rite instead of being calculated internally. 3. All students must participate in the Rite.ā
The students all gasped, at the declaration of the Rite of Succession was announced, and the rules the followed after. The first rule wasn't that harsh. He can just escape the battle any moment and what's more, he can just don't participate in it! What a smart idea Rey hatched. For the second, he had absolutely no idea what it meant. Come one, Rey ain't smart, neither will he ever be one either. He's just too damn plain, boring and most of all, stupid. Well, can't blame him. Okay, the third rule was too much. Every student have to join? That's outrageous. Well, not to the headmaster, who had his hands up like a boss. Okay, maybe he was, but that still doesn't mean he can just steal the student's freedom, just like that! Now, Rey will have to be on his guard everyday, every time. "Great. Just. Great."
āAs of this moment I declare this term at Archon Academy to be open. Commanders, please take charge of your units and may the greatest of you succeed. May glory forever shine on our Empire!ā
"May glory never shine on this shitty Empire!" Is what he wanted to say, but if he did, it would only make things worse for him. Well, he'll just have to go along with this. He finally stood up and made his presence known to his group, while being approach by the Lieutenant of his platoon. "Ya need something?"

It was already too late as Kayle voiced concerns that were no doubt on the minds of dozens of parents and cadets in the field before them, thankfully the microphone didnāt pick him up. Desmond spoke rather gently to the man attempting to calm him, āKayle, I understand your concern but-ā
āThatās enough, Nekorin, sit down. These orders come from way above your pay grade, and mine.ā The headmaster snapped, stomping his foot slightly and cracking the ground beneath his heel. The Headmaster was an immensely strong Guardian, probably would rank around a class B or A senior, however his clout still mainly came from his position.
Yet there was one person at least on that stage that didnāt give a damn, Demsond stepped forward and cleared his throat, āHeadmaster... While I understand that General Nekorin has an issue with timing, he also has a very valid point.ā Desmond reasoned, glancing over his shoulder s the Cadets families began to file out. Bravo Company was being called to attention by its commander but Desmond wasnāt really paying attention to what was being ordered over there.
The headmaster turned on Desmond with far less civility than Desmond had shown him, āThis is out of our hands and you know Iām not going to discuss this and thatās final!ā the man went to stomp his foot again, this time at Desmond but he was stopped by the gaze coming from the young manās eyes. Desmond was no fool, this literal āputting his foot downā thing was not some scolding technique or a way of relieving stress but a threat, and the General picked right up on that.
āIf youāre going to threaten me, Headmaster, be ready to back it up...ā He commented coldly with a smooth finish that chilled the man to the bone, he was glad the others could barely hear them at that moment, āRegardless of the orders given in this instance your actions are disrupting the autonomy of the Corp of Cadets, Headmaster.ā He let that sink in as he glanced to the field. As he looked out at his Battalion Bravo company began to disperse, the first to do so and he stepped up to the microphone, āCadets, belay that order, remain at your post. Battalion, Stand at ease!ā he ordered before turning to the headmaster with a softer look in his eye, āI know youāre only following orders sir, but if nothing else I think the students deserve a proper briefing, donāt you?ā the head master nodded, turning to Kayle Desmond sighed, āI know itās not ideal Kayle, theyāre going over my head on this oneā¦ and this is asking a lot with recent eventsā he was revering to the incident with Sam, ābut I ask you to trust me, at least for the moment.ā He awaited the manās reply, the Battalion before them unable to hear the exchange. The headmaster, meanwhile sent several of the battalion staff at the side of the stage to ensure the parents and families left swiftly, the public portion of the ceremony was over, time for the military cadets to get to work.
"If briefing the students is all we can do then do it, might as well educate them on their situation, this is a school after all." Kayle compromised and the anger faded. "I'll meet with the Medical Corps later today, I know most of them will be as willing as I am to participate." He replied calmly without sarcasm. It took all of his control to walk across the stage with dignity before he returned to stand by his seat like a scolded child.
"I can't bring the dead back to life." Kayle cursed himself solemnly under his breath. There wasn't any stopping the rites now but at least he could say he tried something, this wasn't over yet.
----
Delryn gave a sigh as at ease was called and turned around looking at the lieutenant that he had replaced and pointed sharply at the spot he was standing on sending a clear message of stand here. as the green lieutenant took his rightful spot Delryn gave a crisp salute and looked up to the rises then shot a glance over at Daniel who would be the first to issue a rite who would draw first blood and did it even affect him after all this wasn't even his country He was a refugee of war taken in on someone else's eye for a good shot and kindness.

He stopped pacing to stand behind the podium again and stood behind it once more, āFor those of you who do, however, wish to serve our nation by participating whole heartedly in the Rite, neither I nor any member of my staff,ā He drew out the last few words as he turned to look at Kayle and the other Generals, āwill inhibit you. However, that does not give you cart blanche to start fights for pleasure in the middle of the mess. The challenge system, as laid down in the by-laws of both the Empire and Archon Academy follows a strict set of rules. I wonāt patronize you by reading you the full list, and Iām sure many of you would like nothing more than for me to shut my big mouth and let you go get changed, but it is my duty to brief you all on some key principals of this system. First and foremost a challenge can be turned down by the defending party, although this will be counted as a forfeit, and at any point during a challenge either party can retreat which does count as a defeat. Challenges will count towards oneās standing in the Rite, as well as your Class and rank standings here at Archon.ā He took a breath and his demeanor change back from the slightly laid back and more intimate style to that of the General from before as he stood straighter, āNow for all of you who are barely paying attention, get your thumbs out your asses and listen up, Iām not going to accept any ignorance of this next law. These Challenges while on school grounds or in the surrounding area are not to the death. This is not some gladiatorial blood bath, these are duels between skilled opponents and as such are not tools of revenges.ā Once more it felt like he was staring each of them in the eye, Caspian and Daniel both had a chill run their spine that froze each, despite differences in combat experience and age, in place. āAs suchā¦ this school the Corp of Cadets, and I personally will not tolerate any who would use the Rite as an excuse to commit assault, or worse, murderā¦. Let me be absolutely clearā¦ anyone found or suspected of attempting to do such, for malicious intents or otherwise, will answer directly to meā¦ā he leaned closer to the microphone, āDo you all understand?ā he asked slowly. He didnāt back away from the microphone until he heard a resounding call of āSir, yes, sirā come from the crowd. At last he saluted the unit, āDismissed... and good luck to you all.ā
He turned and motioned for the microphone to be shut off with a swift pull across his neck, looking at the Headmaster, āIām ready and willing to accept punishment for my behavior, sir, however I will not be providing a public apology.ā The Headmaster glared at him for a moment before sighing and shaking his head.
āThey just snatched the throne right out from under you, Desmond, so Iāll let it slideā¦ but if you ever speak to me like that again Iāll have your balls pinned above my office door! Do you understand me?ā the Headmaster reprimanded.
āSir, yes, sir.ā Desmond replied, saluting the man who returned it and walked away, most of the teachers filing out as well. With the Cadets being dismissed by their company commanders Desmond looked to Kayle, āKayleā¦ do you have anything else youād like to say?ā he asked directly as the other generals filed out. Desmond was clearly just as furious as Kayle had been, and he probably had more reason to be, however still he was offering the other man a chance to vent, he owed him that for what had happened to Sam.
He was hoping challenges would not come his way too much, the odd challenge he would not mind, But as a combat specialist, a fireteam leader and physically quite a large person he suspected he might have to deal more then the odd one. This train of thought rather held his attention as he missed the commotion around him, to the point he only really came back to notice them being called at ease while the headmaster and the general had a discussion.
His mind was set though already, Survival was important. Those who sort the power too much would be butchered by the competition and those who sat back would be left in the dust. No Kai would make some attempt to earn merits but in no shape or form would he really go for it, he just wanted to make sure he survived in a decent position for his future.
"Thank you." Kayle replied simply with the faintest of smiles on his face. He thought he felt like a boy among men before, now he felt even younger next to Desmond's wisdom in matters of leadership like this.
"Don't expect anymore than those two words in thanks because it can only go down hill from here Desmond. For now it will be safe, but I don't have the optimism to trust peaceful surrenders and forfeits will hold until the end. There will always be accidents." Kayle replied moving his fingers as quotation marks as he said accidents.
