Introduction

Black Magic

β€œThe Dark Magic that these Witches possess is a threat to all humanity.”

Megurine Luka – Witch

The First Empire
This world once had a name, though it has long since been lost to time. Man, too, once lived on this earth by another name. They grouped together in a bountiful land that had everything they could ask for, and there they built a Kingdom. Though it began small, this Kingdom developed over the centuries, transforming from a city-state into a thriving Empire. This Kingdom enjoyed an age of incredibly prosperity, because of one main reason: the people had access to the powers of Magic.

The magic that these people had made them incredibly powerful and it allowed them to succeed in domains where other civilizations failed. However, while this magic was the civilization’s greatest strength, it turned out to be its downfall.

A rebellious group of skilled magic users decided that they would tolerate the rule of the King no longer. They led an insurgency against the Kingdom and, to the surprise of all, their cause garnered tremendous support. The Kingdom became engulfed in a terrible, magic-fueled war that ravaged the land. The human race was set back centuries in terms of progress, and there was not even ruins left of the old Kingdom.

Though many thought that this was the end of magic and humanity, humans proved to be resilient.

A Second Age
The remnants of the human race banded back together under old flags. Though the cataclysmic war had erased so much history, the people decided to pick up the same old system. A Kingdom was formed again, and a new King and council were established, and construction began again. The land would never be the same, but the people would try to begin again.

However, some major differences quickly became a part of life in the Kingdom. A magical police force, named the Inquisitors, was established to patrol the land and ensure that magic was not abused ever again. Additionally, sanctions were put on the general public to restrict their usage of magic.

Over the centuries, these changes led to a general diminishing in the powers of the people. Though they still had access to their magic, their connection to it was so greatly reduced that soon it was like looking at a different race. At the same time, however, the nobility and the Inquisitors enjoyed unlimited access to their magic and they spent years and years of research and practice. Just as the peasants were losing their magic, the nobility were making theirs more powerful. They were becoming a higher race of incredible power.

In this manner, history continued for a millennium.

The Black Witches

β€œIt is the sign of a return of darker times that these abominations have come into existence.”

In modern times, the Kingdom is in a much different place than it was in the First Age. Society as a whole is not nearly as advanced, with the fringe of the lands being wreaked with poverty. Even in the deeper cities, the quality of life has degraded along with the level of magic that they possess. The daily sight of the Inquisitors has become as normal as seeing a beggar. At the same time, however, the nobility are thriving in their castle town.

But, things are changing in this age. Something has begun to happen that has not happened - or at least not with any degree of frequency, as there are no documents to support that this is their first incarnations – which is set to change the course of history. Peasants are being born who are very different from their kin.

These new beings are peasants, beings of the inferior race artificially created by the nobility, but they have an unprecedented amount of magical power. In addition to having general magical powers on par with the nobility, as well as access to greater powers (to be explained later).

The nobility and general populace both broke out into an uproar. The existence of these unnatural beings seemed to be a forewarning of a return of the darker times that plagued the end of the First Age. Mass paranoia broke out, and riots broke out all across the Kingdom. In less than a day, the King issued a call to arms of the Inquisitors, mobilizing the organization in numbers that it had not been in centuries. They were tasked with a single mission: find these β€œBlack witches”, as they were called, and kill them.

Suddenly, it became common to see the Inquisitors hunting Witches in the street and killing them. Burnings and public executions became a daily occurrence. As for the Witches, they were forced to fight for their lives, run and hide just to survive.

This is where we come in. In the middle-class town of Alderath, a momentous event has occurred. Several Black Witches banded together in the center of town, and attacked the Inquisitors that were hunting them. To everyone’s surprise, the Witches succeeded.

These witches were more surprised than anyone else with their power. Suddenly, they realized that it was not impossible for them to fight back against the Inquisitors instead of just running from them. So, for the sake of their mutual survival, these Witches decided to band together. That was how the Black Coven was established – an organization of Black Witches united to fight against the Inquisitors and the nobility. For the first time since the First Age, an organized force was rallying against the oppressive government and its unchecked power.

The Witches’ Power
Magic is a natural part of the human race. Everything which is basic to magic comes natural to them: basic control over objects, some healing magic, common hexes and jinxes, etc. The peasants’ powers have been very limited over time, so they can only tap into them in a very basic sense. The nobles’ magic is stronger and more effortless. Although these basic forms of magic are mostly effortless, they do drain a person’s physical energy.

Any other form of magic, however, is a separate matter entirely. Anything beyond the basics (yes, even fireballs), is considered a "higher magic". These are not innate in any of the common people, as they are an extension of the peoples' basic powers into secondary realms. These different magical powers are available only to the nobility and the Inquisitors, as a result of centuries of experimentation and development. These powers are not effortless, and require the expenditure of mana - life energy which is fixed in each person, refills over time and with rest, and which the amount of which one can hold improves with experience and training.

These secondary forms of magic are seemingly limitless. Mana is an incredible source of energy to those with enough magical talent to use it, and it can power almost anything. The number of β€œhigher magics”, therefore, is equally limitless. That is one of the reasons why the nobility completely outclassed the lesser people. Until the Black Witches came into being.

On top of their general magical talents, on par with even the most highly trained Inquisitor, the Black Witches have a unique aspect to their magic. Each Witch is born with a β€œDevil’s Pact”, which grants them innate access to a single Higher Magic. This access does not equate to power, merely potential. But, with training and experience, every Black Witch has the capability of becoming just as magically powerful as the enemies they face – a level of opposition unseen before.

The Mission
The Black Coven exists for one purpose: to defeat the Inquisitors and the nobility, as that is the only way to ensure the survival and protection of the Witches. To this end, the Witches must band together and increase their own power, while also resisting their enemies at every turn.

Rules and Regulations

1) Be kind, courteous, and friendly!
  • This is my number one rule! We're all buddies here, so be nice and respectful. Not only to me, you're esteemed (glorious?) leader, but to each other. Let's make this a comfortable and creative environment, mmk?
2) Write to the best of your ability!
  • Now, I'm only one quarter Nazi, so you don't have to be worried about me being super, hyper, mega restrictive. However, I think we all know the level of writing that denotes a good roleplayer, and - seeing as I know at least several of you - I know that you're all more than capable of that.
  • Therefore, use your common sense. Write enough to sufficiently contribute to the story. Don't post too infrequently, but also don't post too frequently either (unbelievable as it is, I've seen it happen a few times...heh). We're all have lives and schedules, so I want to do my best to accommodate everyone while developing the story.
3) Be vocal!
  • I'm here, and I'll check the OOC thread and my messages every day. Heck, if you want to pm me and ask for it, I'll even give you my email address (although, those of you that know me likely already have me on Skype). That said, communicate with me and everyone else. A good sign of a healthy roleplay isn't always the posting tab, but the OOC tab. Let's make this one big, crazy family!

Cassy sat on a box she’d set up next to the window, waiting in one of the abandoned buildings on the outskirts of Alderath, thinking to herself as she waited for the battle to ensue. Sheesh, don’t these inquisitors have a sense of urgency at all? Surely they could move faster than the speed that they were marching now. After all, the Black Witches were a smudge on their good record of snuffing out any and all magic that popped up amongst the rabble. Letting the Black Witches run rampant was just not their style. Sighing, she took the time to think back to the plan that she helped Rain come up with. Granted, it wasn’t exactly the best experience for her, since even though she was considered a β€˜senior’ member, she didn’t consider herself the best planner, but having been charged with coming up with a plan, she really had no choice...

It took Cassy a moment to really process everything that happened once Ayumi launched herself at Morgan, spouting something about how she would be the one to love Lily’s food the most. Why the fact that Cassy actually tried the potion master’s food set Ayumi off so badly was beyond her, but she eventually shrugged it off, only to find that she was charged with planning some sort of trap for the inquisitors that were approaching. And with Rain of all people. Sighing, she placed her empty bowl of β€˜soup’ on the table next to her and made her way over to the crazy man known as Rain, taking a seat across from him. She brought her hands to her face, clasping them in front of her mouth, waiting for him to speak. And when he didn’t...

β€œSo you want me to start. Alright, sure. Though, to reiterate, even though I’ll think of a few ideas for the other members, I’m honestly going to mostly be trying to devise a way for me to try to get in on the action. While I do have plenty of range with my powers, I prefer to get up close and personal. Really get in their face, y’know?” She snickered a bit before continuing.

β€œIn any case, as Lily mentioned, if we fight within the city limits, Alderath will surely burn, and we simply cannot have that. So, we’re going to have to take them outside the city. But we can’t take them out in the open. As we’ve all astutely point out, with how many inquisitors are approaching, that would most likely be suicide. So, we’re going to have to compromise.” Cassy took a deep breath before she continued.

β€œI figure our best bet on all fronts is to fight on the outskirts of the city. That means making the city look completely abandoned to catch the inquisitors off guard, then forcing them into a fight at the edge, to keep property damage to a minimum. If we can get a line on which direction they’re coming from, maybe we can find an abandoned building or something to hole ourselves up in before we strike.” She nodded, fairly satisfied with how well her strategy was going. It wasn’t every day that she came up with a plan as complicated as this. Usually it was more akin to the β€˜punch-people-in-the-face-until-they-die’ style of fighting, that being much more simple and straightforward.

β€œSo, if we can manage that, all that really leaves is how to set up for those dastards. And unfortunately, I don’t know much of what everyone else can do, or how they can adequately set up traps, so, we might have to let them sort it out themselves. I mean, I know Eleanor has telepathy, Lily has potions, Joker has that weird shadow thing, and Ayumi seems like she’s got some sort of mind control, but they’d probably be better at figuring out something themselves anyways.” She paused again, letting Rain add in whatever he could before continuing on.

β€œWell, regardless, even though I like getting in close, I’ve got a bit of a plan on what I can do to contribute...”

It was around this time that the inquisitors finally arrived, causing Cassy to get a huge grin on her face as she saw them approaching in the distance through the boarded up window. As they got closer, she kept up the guise of the city being abandoned until a few of them got a bit too close. Just before they reached the traps laid by the rest of the Coven, Cassy pointed in their general direction, laying what seemed to be a giant yellow flower amidst their ranks. Smiling even wider as she watched the surprised looks on their faces, she pointed again, this time at her trap, causing the ethereal looking flower to explode in a fantastically bright display of lasers yellow, one that might have been pretty entertaining if not for the fact that those lasers began to seek out inquisitors, hitting them with an incredible amount of energy, knocking most of them to the ground.

β€œNow that’s what I’m talking about. I guess fighting at range might not be so bad...”

From here, she punched out a few of the boards in the window in preparation to launch her full scale assault, whether it would be a barrage of lasers or a more physical attack would depend on how badly the inquisitors had been disrupted, but either way, she was ready to go.

In the days leading up to the battle of Alderath, Morgan had acted much the same way she always did – Though paying a degree more time with her cauldron to brew up various concoctions for the coming battle. Traps were an on/off speciality of the potion master, seeing as she did enjoy testing her potions on others as pranks. The fact that she had to reapply that knowledge for deadly effect would have been a little disturbing, if Morgan hadn’t have already been the slightly disturbed person that she was. Acids, poisons, polymorphs, sedatives and explosives comprised the vast majority of the brews Morgan made, and with some β€˜assistance’ (Which consisted of hours upon hours of trying to get Joker to remain serious enough to help her), she’d managed to set up some pressure-sensitive dangers for the enemy Inquisitors.

With that done, it seemed she was relegated to supporting from the back lines, both Cassy and Rain informing her that there wasn’t much for a potion specialist to do on the front lines. Though she disagreed with that notion, their plan for her to play the part of long ranged assistance wasn’t entirely without merit, and after agreeing to their battle plan, she swiftly went to set up atop one of the outskirt buildings. It wasn’t really anything fancy, but it would get the job done. After all, she was working on a budget. That, and the company would be nice.

As the shout for battle filled the air, Morgan awoke from her nap on the roof by Ichabod, reminding her that she had a job to do. Yawning, Morgan set Mr. Moose down on the awning, fastening it in place with a gluey concoction she’d made prior, looking out across the battlefield for clusters of the soldiers. Naturally, as the noxious traps and the like were discovered, the surviving soldiers were filtering around them in groups. For Morgan, that just meant there were bigger targets. With a little exertion on her part, Morgan began pulling back on the elastic she’d attached between Mr. Moose’s antlers, loading a glass vial of explosive variety into the pouch of her makeshift slingshot. β€œI know, I know, Be careful about the wind…” Morgan mumbled in response to Ichabod, pulling back a little further before letting fly.

An incredible boom sounded, sending bits of debris and dirt flying from the point of impact as the potion hit its mark. Too bad Morgan was way off target. With a frown, Morgan began loading in the next β€˜munition’, taking into account how far off she’d been and correcting for her mistakes. The first shot was always the trial. It’d be way easier from this point on. Hopefully. It’d be embarrassing if she didn’t manage to hit a single target during the entire battle for Alderath.

The days of planning were nothing different to the unofficially appointed jester of the coven. There was some sort of unspoken rule that he got to do bugger all, while the more serious members took a chance at devising up a better plan than throw-cow-dung-at-their-armour, which, like his pink dress idea, was quickly dismissed for its ridiculousness.

Bummer, really. Though some good came out of it, like 'assissting' their gracious cook – If Joker wasn't to busy diverting Rain and Cassy's attention from their work so he could sneakily scribble down another set of plans from yours truly – with setting up traps and triggers. Most of them were Morgan's work, containing poisons, acids and whatever was considered deadly. Should become interesting when they were triggered.

Joker's traps mostly consisted of barrels of cow dung that would be flung by a make-shift catapult if he'd untie the rope – Oh and something with underpants, but that was just a spur-of-the-moment trap and probably never going to be used for this fight.

With all that said and done, the day of one of the most epics of epics was about to occur. Every coven member had placed themselves strategically at the spots they were given, all six of 'em...

Joker, unsurprisingly, had snuck off for his own little plan (Because he sucked at long range fighting anyway.), arriving at the pen that hold a lone bull. With a fixed grin, the man jumped onto the fence, his eyes locking with those of the, far less than aggressive, bull. β€œAha! My mighty steed! You will do purrrfectly!”

The redheaded jester laughed, walking on the fence and inching closer to the beast. β€œYou are far less intimidating at thirteenth glance. Guess that's why I picked it as my favourite number.” Joker pondered a moment, stroking his non-existing beard before subsequently opening the gate to free the bull and hopping onto said animal.

…. He isn't moving. β€œC'mon! Don't make me poke you with something shaaaarr---” The man paused, rummaging through his pockets to reveal a sharpened hairpin.

*Poke*

β€œSweet...” Sticking the pointy object into the bull's buttocks, the animal instantly made a run for wherever it could, stampeding through the village with all its might.

β€œHa! I knew that Ayumi's pin I stole a few days back would come in handy some da- Woahoaho!” Hands held onto rough horns, β€œMush, my mighty bull! Let us wreak havoc upon those fancy pants!” Joker announced, grinning all the way through as his joyride barraged in the assumed direction.

β€œAww, I had hoped someone would have a trumpet ready to sound this incoming ma-haaaar---!” Apparently, the steed wasn't a fan of his knight. It threw Joker off his back with a single thump, tossing the poor sod into a pile of hay that had been randomly distributed on the street-- Something that saved the man a few bruises and fractures, surely.

Dangit! Buzzed a thought through his mind, his body recovering from the fall as it rose from the hay, blue eyes staring down the stampeding bull that was heading off to do some heroics. β€œOi!” Joker shouted, hands forming around his mouth the elevate the shout. β€œGet back here! You're forgetting your rider!”

He groaned, realising that this particular course of action, and the fact that it failed, may have send him down the inevitable path of getting 'Divine Punishment' from his precious little leader. β€œCrappers, Ayumi's going to K-I-L-L me. At least Buttstallion is about to have some fun. I hope.” With that, Joker scurried off to prepare for a potential close up fight – Should they get passed his precious steed that is.

Re: Black Magic

Soiled it!

Am I still allowed in here? Okay. I sincerely apologize for not posting here, lack of imagination came in hard for this particular RP, but I finally got my ass in gear and managed something. Something... Err, well at least it's in character. Can't say Joker's being extremely helpful for something that's supposed to be taken seriously. xD

Re: Black Magic

Alright, finally managed to get a post up. Though I don't personally have a good excuse, I'm surprised no one else has really taken charge on this. I'm not gonna be pushy or anything, but man, a whole week and not even an OOC post. Did my post about being patient just kill it for everyone? Where'd everyone go, really? XD

Well, hopefully my post will help spark some life back into this thing. Apologies it wasn't sooner, but sometimes getting time and motivation is difficult. ^^;

Re: Black Magic

Hey, everyone. I know you're getting pretty bored with me, so, just wanted to start out by apologizing.

I haven't made any overtures to post yet, as I've been trying to give Fluttery a chance to put his up first. However, it's been a little while now, and since we're all waiting to move on, I've decided to just keep the story rolling.

Now, Fluttery, I'm not trying to be impatient or pushy - real life does come first. Unfortunately. So, feel absolutely free to post whenever you get the chance to. You may have to do some catching up, but I'm sorry - it's the best I can do. ^^;

On a personal note, this is my last week before I'm able to enjoy some time off for the summer holidays. So, after this week, I should have more time to dedicate not only to this rp and doing it justice, but also to other writing projects of mine. I think that'll be great - now, if only I wouldn't have a lot of work to do during my break...Blerg.

But, yes - good things to come within the coming time. Realize, folks, that I'm already planning the course that our little band will take in their adventure - and it is so much grander and more rpg-themed than little, ol' Alderath! There's exciting things in the works. Trust me.

That's what they're paying me for. To find ways to make your characters suffer in the most epic of fashions!

Ahem, yeah. Post would have been up tonight, if I hadn't squandered many hours of my day reading. I did, unfortunately, so it may be up tomorrow. Either way, I'm going to get this ship rolling again in a bit. Hope to hear from you all again soon!

Cheers,
Rinn

Edit: Post is up. I know it's long, but I'm sorry. I decided to move the plot along, and that required a good bit of...effort. Still, hope with this that the rest of you will be able to get reasonable posts out. ^^

And, I realized that I've time skipped a bit here. Don't let that stop you from explaining what your character's been doing to prepare for the battle, though. I kind of figured I'd give everyone the chance to decide for themselves how they could contribute to the battle, and then go from there. So, yeah. Hope that's satisfactory.

Re: Black Magic

Alright, I've got a post up. And Fluttery, don't get too stressed out about it. After all, I hadn't posted until just now, and I definitely didn't have a good excuse. Well, besides the typical stuff. But trust me, I know I can tell you that at least half of this group can be preeeeeetty patient. =P

Re: Black Magic

Why the heck does life keep getting in the way of my other world!! Gahhhhhhh.......

Guys...I'm not going to be able to post until tomorrow night. I know I keep changing the date I'll be able to post but things keep popping up making it impossible for me to even touch the darn computer.

I don't have to to post right now..but Sunday for sure HOPEFULLY for sure, at least, maybe. That is if life doesn't get in the way again.

Re: Black Magic

...I-I'm so glad that I got the post out earlier this week. It's a really good things, all considered. Why?

I may or may not be crying hysterically from Clannad. I might be! OK, I AM! T.T

It's, it's just so sad. I. Can't. Handle. It.

Going to go crawl in a corner and die, now. If I survive until the weekend, I'll talk to you guys then. If.

Until then,
-Rinn

@Captain, I shall take much advantage of her, then. /salute

@Byte, Silence, Infidel. I shall smite you with the wrath of the mighty gerbil army.

@Fluttery, I, uh, didn't even miss you. You weren't gone long enough. ^^; Welcome back, though. /patpat

Re: Black Magic

So...I've been kind of absent for the past few days. My deepest apologies >< I've had a lot of crap going on and I've been really distracted. It's all settled and I should be back in the game tomorrow if not today.

More than likely I'll have a post up in a few hours, but I want to read the posts I've missed so far first which may take me a little while.

But I'm back! Once again, sorry for my absence.

Re: Black Magic

So, yeah, sorry for having been MIA for a while. Can safely say that video games took up my free time for a bit. I'm sure the people who have me on Steam can confirm that. Maybe. Anywho, got a post up. Sorry if I missed anything important that needed to be mentioned or responded to by Joker, but I just wanted back in the game. I totally blame Rinn for writing such large posts.

Re: Black Magic

I don't mind. Ellie is pretty easy to manipulate anyway. It's not really even manipulation at that point, plus the plot required it.

Re: Black Magic

Post's up. All is fixed. No hard feelings to anyone, so you can all shush with your re-writing and apologising. ^^;

And hey, I surprised you, didn't I? You were waiting for Thursday, weren't you? Well, jokes on you guys! Even in the midst of my exam preparation and Clannad-induced sadness, I can work up a post. +GM points for me. x3

Mmm, talk to you later, I guess. After you guys get a kick from my attempts to fix it all. Hehehe...hehe...heh.

-Rinn

@Captain, sorry if I manipulated Ellie a bit for my purposes. Feel free to take it out on me in anyway you wish.~ <3

@Fluttery, I realised post-posting that I forgot to have Ayumi eat your potatoes. I apologise.

@Digs, I don't have to be a GM to have god-like powers. I just have to open up a word document and start controlling the universe. It's quite refreshing, actually. ^^;

Random Vocaloid Song I'm listening to: IA - Rockbell

Re: Black Magic

Have faith in the God-like powers of the GM, folks. It's a pretty small mix-up (that I sort of saw coming) and I'm pretty sure Sass has the ability to work around it.

And on that note, have fun with that, Sass! =P

Re: Black Magic

I'm at fault for that as well. I knew that Rinn hadn't specifically said that the danger was coming quite so soon. I just assumed that they were okay with the direction that it took. So, for what it's worth, sorry for my part in that. If we're rewriting the posts, I'll happily change mine.

Re: Black Magic

It's all your fault Digikun! Go home, your obviously drunk.

Aha, just kidding. Unless you are drunk. Then party on mah brothah!

Alright, never saying 'mah brothah' again. Let's forget that happened.

Anywho, I kinda just went along, so sorry on my part as well. I'd say we could rewrite, but we've already put in pretty much all of our reactions so that would be just a little difficult. Not impossible, but we'd have to figure out how to coordinate it all out and that might take some time and end up getting confusing. My brain can't handle that.

Re: Black Magic

ooooooooooooooooooooops -.-;;;

...my bad on the incoming danger thing...

I actually should have guessed since Morgan didn't even react to that thing that happened at the end of your post...then I just started writing...

Sorry guys...^^;

Re: Black Magic

Hey, sorry I've been quiet for a little bit, guys. Had a relatively busy week last week, and this week is going to be even worse for me - at least, until Wednesday. After that, maybe not so much. However, I'm getting work done! That's a plus, neh? x3

That's to say, I'm going to work on a post soon-ish. It'll definitely be before the end of the week, but don't hate me if you guys have to wait until Thursday or Friday. Sometimes, life just works out like that, y'know? ^^;

Also, I'll have more information regarding setting and Inquisitors and such to come soon as well. I actually worked on a world map Friday afternoon, and got it finished. However, I want to run it by Tanman, and let him see if it's presentable or not. (Yes, it's that bad! I'm a terrible artist, sorry, hehe...) But, that's all coming soon. -TM

Also, not trying to point any fingers, but you guys totally jumped the gun on my "incoming danger" bit! I totally didn't mean that the herald was around just yet - the Inquisitors aren't even due for a couple more days! Yeesh. What a mess you guys've made. x3

Nah, it's not a problem - I'll finagle around it with my post, so it's nothing major. Just wanted to tell you guys to slow your roll just a tad. Just a smidge. A bit. A little. You get the point. Don't make me think of inventive ways to hide things from you so I can get the satisfaction of making it a surprise! :3

-Rinn

@Tanman, that Bartender - he's evil. I couldn't make him go away. T.T

Re: Black Magic

Hey everyone! Just here to apologize for my lack of posting. Been kind of busy lately.

It's Mother's Day today so I won't be able to post. Just on for a minute to let you all know I'm still around, haha ^^

Tomorrow(the 13th) I should have time to get a post in, and if not then I guarantee I'll have one in on Tuesday, Okie Doke?

Re: Black Magic

Sorry I haven't posted yet. I meant to last night, but ended up just falling asleep instead. I should have one done before morning.

EDIT
Finally finished. It's not great, but I figure that it's better than nothing.

Re: Black Magic

Alright, got a post up. Took me a bit of thinking to get this one down, but if you have any problems with it, lemme know. I've got an interview tomorrow, but I'll be around after that. ^^;

Re: Black Magic

I posted! Sorry for any mistakes I made, I was kind of in a hurry. I will go over my post and fix any mess ups in a few hours. I'm a little busy right now.

Re: Black Magic

That NPC bartender sneaking in that last post. Must be spying in on the Coven's conversation. Also, I refuse to call Sass anything but Sass because Sass has sass!
