Shelby Peters

"If you think i'm going to comply you're wrong"

0 · 873 views · located in Distant future America

a character in “Captive in a Chemical Garden”, originally authored by KiraArsenic, as played by RolePlayGateway

Description

Name:
Shelby Peters
Image
Age:
16
Face Claim:
Emma Roberts
Likes:
• Cooking “Because nothing says “yes master” like a well cooked steak”
• Reading “Why not get lost in another world?”
• Fresh air “Considering I haven’t had any since I was 14”
• Exercising “Keeps my mind AND body busy”
• Rain “If only I could feel it again”
• Children “but don’t tell anyone”
Dislikes:
• Being forced into marrying “Surprised? Not everyone loves the married life.”
• Being alone except for the most part “except when my “husband” visits me for reproduction purposes. Oh yeah. I feel cherished.”
• Feeling stuck or trapped “like being held captive in a floor of a house? Yeah.”
• Having her clothing chosen for her “What I’m not big enough to choose what I wear?”
Image
Fears:
• Needles “Don’t get anywhere near me with those”
• Taking Medication “I’m not drugging myself with ANYTHING”
• Her sister dying “I don’t feel like talking about it…”
• The idea of pregnancy “I may like children but I’m not looking forward to producing one”
Appearance:
Shelby has honey blonde hair and grey-green eyes. She stands at about 5’5” and is quite fit for her age because she spends most of her ‘alone time’ exercising. If she got to choose her clothing, her style would look like this:
Example
Shelby pierced her own ears 3 times. So she has 6 piercings on her ears total, though she had to remove 4 of them when she was given to the governor. It wasn’t “proper” for a wife to look so “trashy”.
Personality:
Shelby is very headstrong. She refuses to be ordered around like a small child, but responds well to kind requests. She HATES the idea of being forced to be a wife to make more children, and resists the idea with all that she is. If she doesn’t like something she isn’t afraid to speak her mind, and she prides herself on that part of personality. Even though Shelby comes off extremely independent she actually becomes quite depressed when she’s left alone for a long period of time. She thrives on human interaction, and she will do what she has to for attention if she feels lonely. Shelby CAN be a very kind person but she has to feel close to and trust that person before she will show them any kind of warmth. Thus far in her life, her sister is the only one she had ever shown warmth and kindness to.
Shelby is a fighter. She will defend what she believes in even if she knows it could result in a beating (sometimes she will defend her point just to make someone angry if she doesn’t like them).
History:
Shelby’s mother had her when she was 20, and her father was ecstatic to be having a little girl. Then when Shelby was 6 her mother became pregnant again, but lost the baby at 7 months along. Her mother went into a serious depression, quit her job, and slept all day. Shelby’s father didn’t know what to do or say to help his wife. About 2 years later her mother was pregnant again and Cassidy was born. The family was happy again for awhile but when Cassidy was 2 they found out that she had a fatal form of Leukemia. This time Shelby’s mother dove into a depression, and a few months later she killed herself. Their father went mad with grief and abused Shelby verbally, physically, and sexually. She was 9 at the time. The abuse went on for 5 more years, and Shelby’s personality turned from sweet little girl to seemingly cold and heartless. But Shelby started learning how to deflect the abuse, keep herself out of the house when her father was home, or busy herself taking care of Cassidy. She knew Cassidy was safe because all her father wanted to do was help her. He worked 2 jobs and long hours to pay for her medical bills, but Cassidy started taking a turn for the worse. Her father arranged for Shelby’s kidnapping in exchange for some money for Cassidy’s medical expenses. So, in the middle of the night 2 men came to the house paid of her father and stormed her room. They bound and gagged her and threw her into a van. Shelby was unsure of what was happening but she knew the rumors. Girls being sold to men in high status for reproduction purposes. She readied herself for what she’d see when the van doors opened again.

Decker sighed. "Well, Let us go inside then. This party is dreadfully boring, don't you think?" He said, making sure to ask her opinion. He rose when Valentina stood. He pulled her seat out so she wouldn't trip over it. "Of course, Take your time." He said with a smile. His head was beginning to hurt. He didn't know why. He felt a little stressed but only because the girls seemed to be upset. He wanted desperately to fix that but they don't seem to be willing to tell him what was really wrong. Time. He figured may do some good. Perhaps they were just tried from the party? That didn't make sense even in his head. Something was wrong he just didn't know what.

Giving a small, gracious curtsey towards Decker and his sister wives, Valentina smiled.
"You women really do look stunning tonight." She remarked, flashing a warm smile at Raven, Shelby and Lacey in turn, then turned slightly and walked towards the end of the garden, which was completely empty at that moment in time.

Raven turned back to Decker, that brightness lighting up her eyes again.
"Then, yes. I'd like to stay with you..." she told him with her soft, quiet voice with a smile at her lips. "After all...The more time I spend with you, the less time it'll take for me to become comfortable with you, right?" It was also the fact that the more time she spent alone with him, the less time he spent possibly falling for the other girls. The selfishness of that thought shocked Raven, and once it had made its way into her head, she found herself trying to justify it. She still clung onto the fantasy that there was one other person in the world she would be as perfect for as he'd be for her, who'd love her and protect her and make her feel special, and maybe...Just maybe Decker hadn't actually stolen that possibility from her. Maybe this entire ordeal was a blessing in disguise and Decker was that man...But he couldn't be, if he was dividing that love between her and three other women...And, from what she could tell, Shelby didn't want to be his wife. She didn't want to love him, and Lacey...Lacey was just a little girl who probably didn't understand the full meaning of love, and Decker didn't seem at all interested in entering into that kind of romantic relationship with her. That just left Valentina...She had no idea what Valentina's feelings were, or Decker's. But she couldn't possibly be that desperate for that kind of affection, could she? With that beauty, that confidence, that grace...She'd probably had plenty of men's attention before she was taken, whereas Raven had never had any...
No matter how much she justified that thought, no matter how logical her argument, she still felt that pang of guilt in her chest...But she brushed that feeling off to the side to dwell on later, and focused her attention - and her smile - back on her husband.

Shelby watched as new events played out. Valentina left the table and decided to walk off into the garden, Decker wanted alone time with Raven, and Lacey was sent to open the wedding gifts. 'What are their life stories?' she thought 'Why do I seem to be the one that's most apprehensive about this?' Once everyone had left the table, Shelby got up and walked through the garden to the fountain where she was met up with by the ladies in waiting. They did not look happy. "I thought we told you to be civil. That was not civil. That was doing just enough to sneak by. And it was rude to get up an leave the table when he asked you a question. Sadly, it's my job to train you...and punish you." when she finished her speech guards appeared with smirks on their faces. "Take her up to her floor and keep her there." the woman said sternly, then she pulled the other guard aside and said in a hushed voice "If governor Delaney asks where she is or what you're doing with her, just tell him that she's not feeling well and needs to retire to her room" The guard nodded and the men stood on both sides of Shelby. 'Really?' Shelby thought 'Putting me in my room is a reward not a punishment' but she pretended she was sad about it.

When she'd travelled far enough down to the end of the garden, Valentina looked back towards the door leading inside, a small, smug smile on her face when she laid eyes on Raven and Decker.
One thing Valentina hadn't wanted was to be First Wife. And that was her primary worry when she had seen the rest of Governor Delaney's wives...one who wouldn't say a word for her shyness, one who was merely a little girl, and one who couldn't have hated him more if she'd tried. And her attitude for the wedding day had been simple: be sweet, charming and act like you were settling in. Her game plan for any time after that was also simple: keep to herself, do what she had to do, and try to get through this in her own little way. But again, after seeing the brides at the table, she had been completely terrified that Decker would begin to show any affection for her. Which, judging by the way he had been looking at her at the table, she needed to stop before it went any further. And so she had excused herself.
But, seeing how Decker and the little shy bride were hitting it off in her absence, that didn't look like a worry for her anymore. And, with regards to genuine love and affection...it looked like Raven would be recieving the most of it. Which wasn't something that bothered Valentina at all.
She couldn't promise herself that when it came to the bearing of children, the same would apply, and although that scared her slightly, she knew she'd probably just have to accept it. Lacey was too young, and Shelby just wouldn't co-operate. And although neither of them payed a lot of attention to her, she still valued them as family in a way and would do what she had to to keep them safe and unharmed. Not that she suspected Decker would ever bring harm to them, but...it was just a precaution.
With Raven, she wanted to be more of a friend, than a family member. Which would make this whole situation kind of complicated...something she wasn't looking forward to at all.
Raven seemed already smitten with Decker, and...could two friends really share a husband? Without it feeling like a competition? Maybe not on Valentina's part, but...if Raven really loved him, then...would she not grow to resent her?
And if Valentina found that she did have to bear Decker's children at some point, would Raven hate her for it? Would she mind? And how would he feel about all of this?
So many questions she found herself asking, and the more and more she thought, the more questions joined them...along with the steady decrease of her smile until it was completely faded and replaced with a confused frown. She had no idea what to do, or how to make any of this work. It was all just so complicated...
Taking another sip from her glass of champagne, and sighing as she looked down at the rose in her other hand, Valentina found that the horrible reality of the situation was just beginning to sink it. And it wasn't pretty.

Shelby

Shelby was basically dragged to her room by her elbows. The guards were holding her so tightly that she was sure she'd have bruises when they let go. "MUST you hold me so tightly? It's not like I can run anywhere, and while you're threatening the life of my sister you know I won't do anything stupid." she said bluntly. The guards chuckled darkly. "Miss Edith told us not to let you go and to make this as un-pleasurable for you as possible. When they got to her floor they threw her into her room and locked the door. Shelby landed with a thump on the carpeted floor and picked herself up again. 'Still better than being down there' she thought. Suddenly her domestic, Kylah, appeared. "You're all scraped up, and you have a rip in your dress. Allow me to help you" she said softly. Shelby was apprehensive but her touch was soft and she could see that the girl meant no harm. "That happens when you're being dragged through a garden and across gravel" she huffed.

The girl wiped her cuts with alcohol but found none that were serious or needed to be wrapped. "Go shower up and i'll lay out your wedding night attire and a clean dress" she said as though she had said it a million times. Shelby rolled her eyes but she couldn't say no to taking a shower. When she washed up and got out her domestic had already had the dress laid out like she said. A few minutes after she had changed her domestic came back in and started in on her hair again. Again, she left it to it's natural dramatic texture, put it up in a poufed ponytail, and added a crown of flowers to her head. "I was told to tell you to wait patiently for Mr. Delaney to come and consummate the marriage, and not to ruin your dress or your hair." the girl said softly as she applied minimal amounts of makeup to Shelby's face.

Shelby's face twisted into a disgusted expression and mumbled to herself under her breath. "It's for your sister, its for your sister, its for your sister" She hated the idea of being with Decker, and she hated the idea of having his children more. 'We don't need any more of HIS KIND running around thinking they own the place' she thought angrily. Her domestic left the room quietly and Shelby was left to stew in her frustration.

Shelby heard footsteps outside her door and her eyes widened. What if it really was Decker? Had he actually come to consummate the marriage even though he said he didn't want to do anything the girls didn't want to do? 'It doesn't matter if that's what he wants. I'm doing this for my sister, so i'll play along with whatever he wants. Maybe soon I can figure out a way to get out of here but for right now my job is to play along, and I can do that.' tears started forming in her eyes but she wiped them away quickly. She didn't want to consummate the marriage. Not at all, especially not after living with a physically, sexually, and verbally abusive father for years. None-the-less she wasn't going to be seen crying. Her soft makeup made her face glow and her dress brought out the color in her skin. Normally she would feel exceptionally beautiful, but not tonight.

Shelby's heart stopped for a moment but when she realized he wasn't going to open the door she began to breathe normally. 'Doesn't he have a key to my room? He HAS to know that I can't open the door. It's locked front he inside.'

She took a deep breath and moved closer to the door. "N..No you didn't upset me" she said, half convincingly with her fist clenched. She had to get better at lying. "It was nothing you did personally." she said with actual conviction, probably because it wasn't actually something he PHYSICALLY did. "I'm not upset." she said, finally sounding confident in what she said. "I just came up here to get ready for tonight." even those words sounded convincing, even though her mind was racing with hateful thoughts. "I'm not one for social interaction in a large crowd." which was also true. She knew she was supposed to invite him in but she couldn't bring herself to do it.

"I'm not hiding my feelings from you." she said convincingly "I'm really not comfortable with large social situations. I hope you understand. I'm not unhappy with you, I'm just nervous and afraid of that many people to be completely honest. Sitting in front of that crowd with everyone staring at me. It made me uncomfortable. When I walked away from the table it occurred to me that I could go up to my floor and get ready for tonight so I did. Please forgive my rudeness, When I didn't answer your question at the table tonight." Shelby hated that she had to lie. It was infuriating her, but she was getting good at lying to him. "So, don't worry Decker, go finish up with your brides and come back. I'll be waiting for you." Both her fists were still clenched. But she knew her answer sounded sincere.

Taking another quick glance around the garden, Valentina huffed quietly and tipped her head back, lifting her glass to her lips and swallowing the rest of her champagne, then gently set the empty glass down on the table closest to her. What was she to do now?
She at first thought about going to see Raven, but after thinking it over decided against it. After all, she'd have plenty of time to talk to her once everything had settled down...hopefully, anyway.
Her other option was Shelby. To be honest, Valentina admired her, in a way...she was still fighting. Something she herself had given up on once she'd been pushed into that van. Whilst Valentina had just accepted the fact that she was going to die here, Shelby still seemed to have a little bit of hope. And, although she felt a small lump rising in her throat at the idea, she thought it was sweet.
And there was the fact that, should she choose to befriend Shelby, she wouldn't have to worry about her abandoning her for Decker...she wanted nothing to do with him. She'd already made that pretty clear.
Putting on a small smile and waving towards the small crowds that still gathered around the garden, Valentina made her way back into her new home, kicking her shoes off once she'd gotten through the door, then picking them up and quietly walking up the stairs, towards the brides' living quarters, and in that, Shelby's room.

"Just know, I belong to you. No matter what anyone says. I am yours and I will do whatever you want me to do. Not the other way around." Decker said, but Shelby had no intention of saying anything back to him. When she heard his footsteps recede she buried her face in a pillow and screamed. The noise was muffled and barely audible. When she was finished she was red in the face and frustrated. She'd have to further prepare herself for intimate encounters with Decker if she was going to get through it while putting on a show. Suddenly she heard footsteps again but this time they were lighter. Shelby raised an eyebrow and waited to see if those footsteps would come closer.

"...Shelby?" Valentina's voice came through the door, quiet and soft, and she knocked lightly on it once. She wasn't going to risk Shelby thinking badly of her without even speaking to her, and she also wanted to make sure she was decent, and well...alone. "It's Valentina...can I come in?"

The voice she heard next was both a wash of relief and the beginning of a new fear 'how much can I tell Valentina? How do I have to act around her?' she thought quickly. "Yeah you can come in, i'm alone" she said quickly. Maybe talking to someone who was in the same predicament would make her feel better but again she didn't know much she could tell the woman. Would the ladies care if she talked to her sister wife? After all, wasn't Valentina supposed to stay quiet about everything as well?

Shelby's domestic brushed past her, unlocked a door, and walked briskly through another corridor. The girl had put Shelby's wedding sheets on her bed, which made Shelby even more wary. 'Its all real.' she thought. 'This is really happening'

Valentina walked slowly into the room a few moments later, closing the door behind her quietly. Once the door was shut, she turned and gave Shelby a weak smile, for the first time in the whole night actually feeling that she didn't have to pretend she was happy. She wasn't going to cry in front of Shelby, she knew that much...but still, she knew that she'd be able to detect the hint of sadness in her eyes.
"...Hi..." She said quietly, shifting uncomfortably on her feet by the door, not one hundred percent sure where to put herself. "I hope you don't mind me coming in here...I mean...I can leave, if you want...I guess I just kind of needed a break from all those people downstairs..."

Shelby could visibly see that Valentina was unhappy as well and oddly enough it made her feel better. 'Maybe SOMETHING good will come of this forced marriage' she thought 'Even if it IS being friends with someone who's just as miserable as I am.'

"Hi" she said awkwardly, unsure of what to say back. "No I don't mind you coming here...I mean I'm actually kind of relieved that you aren't Decker again. I was sent up here to get ready for tonight" she trailed off, realizing what she said. Her eyes widened. "Please don't tell anyone I said that."

She sat silently for awhile before speaking again. "I can understand wanting to get away from all the prying eyes. It's overwhelming." she said awkwardly, still unsure of how much she could say for this woman, or if she had to keep the same facade with her as she did with Decker.

Valentina nodded, smiling weakly at Shelby.
"Don't worry, I won't..." She said quietly, then made her way over to Shelby's bed. She then sat down, gently smoothing out the bedsheets as she did so. "...He won't do anything, you know...I mean...with regards to consummation...not to you or me, anyway..." She looked down at her hands, feeling a small amount of guilt. She'd been so keen on setting Decker up with Raven, but...what if Raven felt the same as she did? The same as Shelby? What if she was just too afraid to let it show?
Pulling herself out of her thoughts, she looked back over at Shelby. "I mean, I basically said no to him downstairs regarding it, and he just took that as his answer...he didn't push or try to force me like my mother told me some Governors do...which is good, because...there's no way I want some wealthy pretty boy rolling around on top of me without my full consent..." She gave a small laugh, possibly because she found the remark funny, but possible to hide the slight wavering in her voice as she spoke. She couldn't really tell. It wasn't that she was jealous or either Raven or Lacey...because, in reality, she had no need to be...Decker had complimented her beauty, showed he cared about her like he did with his other brides, and even made a few small advances...all of which Valentina had rejected, but...they were still what they were...
It was just that...looking around, she could see the conditions she'd be living in for the rest of her life. Albeit, they were pretty, and decorated, and fancy, and made to look like they were special...but she just saw all the pretty as an attempted cover up for all the ugly things Governor Decker and the rest of this establishment had done to bring her and her sister wives here. She didn't want to be here...she wanted to be home. She wanted to see her parents again...even just for a little while...just enough time to tell them she was safe, and she loved them. But that was one thing she'd never get to do. As far as her mother and father knew, she could be lying dead at the side of a road somewhere...or working at a brothel a few towns away...or here. And, although they'd be able to keep up high spirits that she was okay...they'd never fully know. Just like she'd never fully know if they still cared about her, or if they still loved her and were going to try and find her. No more hugs, no more of her mother coming into her bedroom at night and gently curling her hair as they discussed that days events, no more of her father who, on days that he would actually talk to her, would tell her stories of all the animals that had since become extinct, like tigers, lions, flamingoes, cheetas...and of all the countries, with their different languages and cultures and ways of life. Sometimes he would try to teach Valentina part of a new language...but he'd always forget some parts of it or, at least, say he'd forgotten...to this day she wasn't sure if that was the case, or if he found himself actually showing a little bit of care and had to push her away...and so she'd only know a few words. Right now, in the current situation, she couldn't even think of one thing she'd discussed with either of them...and that frightened her. She wasn't ready to forget them. Although, looking around, she'd probably have to. She was going to die here, with no family around her.
And that feeling of loneliness, the feeling that completely took over her and made her almost start to completely shut down at the thought of never feeling that level of love and care again, began to make it's way up and consume her, starting from her fingers and her toes, and making it's way up into her system, her blood turning cold along with it.

"He was serious about that? The good-guy routine? It's hard to believe what's real and what's not." she said in a huff. Shelby laughed at her next comment but then quickly stopped. The girl was serious but it had a mocking edge to it. "there's no way I want some wealthy pretty boy rolling around on top of me without my full consent" "I've got to say, I have no desire to consummate at all..." she paused momentarily, wondering if she should continue. "But at this point I really have no choice in the matter unless Governor Decker is serious about his offer."

Shelby thought about her sister and wondered how she was actually doing. Was her father paid the right amount of money? Were her medical expenses being taken care of? Was she happy right now? 'Does she miss me?' she thought sadly. Late at night when she couldn't sleep, either from pain or nightmares, Shelby would sneak into her bedroom and sing her a lullaby. Something soft and cheerful. Sometimes she would fall asleep with her sister and her father would make her pay for it the next morning. He always told her to stay out of Cassidy's room at night, because "If she was having a nightmare she can grow up and deal with it". Just item on the long list of things her father didn't understand. In fact, one night he caught Shelby sneaking into Cassidy's room, and the smell of southern comfort was oozing out of his pores. Shelby tried to run but he caught her by the arm and wouldn't let go. The rest of the night seemed to be in a haze but she remembered waking up on her bedroom floor with a bleeding welt on her head, a cigarette burn on her temple, and a sprained arm. The memory made shelby shudder but she never regretted trying to sneak into Cassidy's room. She would do anything for her sister.

When she eventually came back out of her thoughts, Valentina looked back up and at Shelby, slightly dazed from thinking so much.
"Um...well, yeah...he seemed serious enough..." She said quietly, giving a small nod as she confirmed that fact in her head. Yes...he had to have been being serious.
Opening her mouth to speak again, she hesitated slightly. Should she tell Shelby about how confused Decker had been earlier? How it seemed like he didn't know they'd all been brought here? Glancing at her again and biting cautiously on her bottom lip, she gulped quietly.
"...I don't think he even knows, you know..." She said almost silently, not quite a whisper, but only just loud enough to be heard. "About the Gatherers kidnapping us all...I mean...when I was talking to him earlier, he...well...he told me he could see something between us...in...that...sense...and when I rejected him, he seemed...well...puzzled, y'know? Like...like he thought we'd all come here willingly, and that we'd all want him..."
She wasn't sure whether she should have told her or not, but...it felt too huge to keep to herself. She couldn't have let it stay a secret.
"I-I...I...I mean, please...don't tell him, or anyone else that I told you that..." She added after a slight pause, stumbling slightly over her words. "I mean, because...even if he doesn't know...someone in this place will...and since I told you, I could get into deep shit if anyone who shouldn't know finds out..."

"Um...well, yeah...he seemed serious enough..." Valentina said. Shelby could tell she had more to say and she was about to ask her what else she knew when she started talking again. "I don't think he even knows, you know...about the Gatherers kidnapping us all...I mean...when I was talking to him earlier, he...well...he told me he could see something between us...in...that...sense...and when I rejected him, he seemed...well...puzzled, y'know? Like...like he thought we'd all come here willingly, and that we'd all want him." Shelby nodded, she could see that being a possibility, considering the ladies in waiting did NOT want her revealing anything personal to him. "I won't tell anyone. But I can see where you're coming from. When I came here I was forced to keep my personal life to myself, and I was told to behave and act womanly." she paused. "One of my family member's life hangs in the balance. If I mess up she's dead." she said softly, almost inaudibly. She was relieved that she could tell someone. 'Hey maybe talking to Valentina will help me get through the night with Decker...or at least part of the night...until he moves on to his other brides...' she thought. "Someone here DEFINITELY knows about everything, and it seems as though someone is purposely lying to Decker."

Valentina blinked and looked at Shelby, the colour draining from her face even more than it already had since coming upstairs. That poor girl...
"...Hey...I won't let you mess up..." She said quietly, giving her a small smile. "Cross my heart. I mean...I'm already trying to just slip through the cracks in this place, anyway...just stay in the back with me, and you and your family will be fine." Her smile faded slightly when the next thought crossed her mind. "...You don't...like him, do you? You know...as far as romance goes?" She said, slightly quieter than she'd said the things before. "I-it's just because...well...I'm not keen on getting involved romantically with him, 'cause...let's face it...it's not love if it's forced..." Her smile began to slowly fade more. "But...I guess I was just hoping to find that little bit of comfort and security from someone else here...someone who felt the same about things as I do...and...we seemed to be on the same page with a few things, and...well, I guess I was just wondering if you maybe...wanted to be...friends...?"
She gave another, more nervous and less convincing smile. It made her sound like a child. And she hated that. But...she just wanted someone that she knew she'd be able to talk to, and...as far as she could tell, Shelby was kind at heart.
