The Kingdom of Thrall was a large, spraling country, a militaristic nation. Its capital, Muspell was an enormous place, a maze of narrow, cobbled streets and clustered buildings thick with grime, crowded beneath the thick walls of the enormous royal palace. The palace was like a city within a city, and it served to let the ruler, King Vox, keep his family well seperated from the common people.

You see, the relationship between the commoners and the King not a good one. War raged agaisnt the magic-weilding tribes of the western steppes, and Vox continued to draw on high taxes to fund the defense of the Kingdom. He also enforced the law with an iron fist, introducing worse punishments and execution for the breaking of the law.

Thing were already quite tense...but things only got worse when he invoked the wrath of the two forces that all but ruled the underbelly of Thrall society. The Theives' Guild, and the Assassins' Guild.

The two organizations were closely interlinked. They governed themselves and enforced laws on the criminals of the kingdom. While they were hardly paragons of morality, they were a lifeline for many of the needy, as they would take children and urchins with no family or home, and train them as guild members.

The King's Guard began targetting members of the two guilds, and that didn't please them.

The two guilds began to assemble a rebellion of sorts, under the leadership of a talented theif. They started to sabotage supplies, tear down posters, steal valuable items from the palace...they generally made life very difficult. Rather than ease up on the arrests however, the King began to increase his efforts to hunt them down..until one fateful day the Theives' Guild was hit, many of them arrested, and the rebellion's leader captured and sentenced to death.

The execution was scheduled for a few weeks time, and the remaining member sof the two guilds were left furious....and struggling to tihnk of a way to save their leader. The second in command, an assassin and far more ruthless leader, rose up to govern them..and suggested something rather extreme.

Two days after the head of the rebellion was arrested, the royal coach was attacked, and the princess, King Vox's only child, was kidnapped and taken tot he new hideout. The princess was a naive young woman. She had lived a sheltered life within the palace walls, getting all that she wanted, and never seeing the reality of the streets outside.

So, the two sides stand at a stalemate. Neither side wish to back down, and both threaten to kill their captives unless the other is returned. This are heading for a bloody conclusion.
