Sir Branen Stonewall of Spindlewas

"Love and duty is a combination that sometimes can not mix, no matter how much it hurts to admitt it."

0 · 294 views · located in Faecleir

a character in “Faecleir”, as played by Kohananinja

Description

Tall at 6'2 with a chiseled jaw and thick locks of dark brown hair, Branen cuts a handsome figure in any attire, though he dresses most often in mail and a blue tunic with his family’s crest embroidered on in silver (A stone tower with a fox head peaking from the window). His eyes are a steely blue in color, and though Branen can be prone to looking stern, his eyes are actually quite expressive despite his somewhat reserved nature.

Personality

Branen is above all else, a man of honor, and he has always tried to live up to the ideals and morals that knights represented in the stories he was fed as a child. On the battlefield, Branen possesses an intense focus that has made him a well-known and revered swordsman in Spindlewas. Off however, he is actually a rather gentle person, being downright shy and overly polite around women sometimes, and somewhat reserved. He is also a man prone to obsession, and seemingly incapable of giving up on a mission or quest.

History

Sir Branen Stonewall is the eldest child and only son of Lord Wyngar Stonewall of Spindlewas. The family is an old and proud one, and supposedly descended from kings, but has become poor in recent years, though they have tried to keep this quiet. Their name and modest castle are their only real claims to nobility now. Branen grew up in this time of necessary modesty for the family, so did not indulge in some of the common luxuries like magic or an abundance of servants like other boys in his class. Instead he focused on athletics and his dream of becoming a knight. As an adolescent, he met the young lady Colette of Spindlewas, who was of a comparable age, and was struck by her grace and beauty. The budding affection was mutual, and so their fathers arranged a betrothal for when they came of age.

When Branen was 20, and newly knighted, his father died, leaving the castle in the care of his stepmother (who was a secret practitioner of magic and he was not particularly fond of) until he came of age. Knowing this, his step-mother used magic to persuade the father that the younger Colette must turn twenty one before they could marry, setting the date back further. Soon after his younger sister, Snow, was kidnapped by bandits during her morning ride, and spirited away into the woods after they left a ransom note with her horse. As they were poor and could not pay such a large sum, the step mother tasked Branen with finding his sister and bringing her back alone, secretly hoping they would both perish. So he set off nearly despairing, and along the road met a talking fox of the forest and, because he was a Stonewall and the talking Foxes of Spindlewas owed the family a great debt, he told Branen that in the next village there was a girl with shining golden hair who could help him with his quest. This was how he met Bettina of Mewhaven, and after a series of misadventures, ruffled feathers, and the development of uncomfortable feelings on both sides, she helped him rescue his sister from the bandits.

The pair did not leave on the most amicable of terms, partly because the step mother stuffed Bettina in a grain silo full of wheat and a spinning wheel when Branen accidentally let slip she could spin gold, and partially because despite the growing emotional attachment the pair had for each other, Branen chose to keep his betrothal to Colette, leaving Bettina feeling used and Branen feeling guilty. After Bran rescued her from the silo, Bettina left with only a short farewell to Snow, who had developed a strange but deep attachment to Bettina.

Four years later, Colette finally turned twenty one, but before the two could be married, her father was murdered, and Colette kidnapped by a sorcerer who turned her into a swan. For the past year, Branen has been on a quest to find his beloved Colette, and consequently, was out of the country when the Kalgrist Empire invaded Spindlewas and killed his king. The fact that he was not there to help fight continues to haunt Branen, and he still has no word from his step mother or his ancestral home. His sister Snow however, was with him while on his quest (as he no longer trusted his step mother around his sister alone) and now they have arrived in Mewhaven, where Branen plans to seek out Bettina in hopes she will keep Snow safe for him while he tries to join or mount military resistance against the empire, and find his missing Prince and Princess

So begins...

Sir Branen Stonewall of Spindlewas was so far quite frustrated by his stay in Mewhaven, and the lack of straight answers he had been given by the feline population in Carabas was a contributing factor. No one would tell him anything regarding Bettina of Mewhaven, not if they knew her, or if they knew where she was, or if she was even alive. Their refusal to answer the last question left the young knight with a particularly tight knot of anxiety in the pit of his stomach. Branen had no right to feel this way, he knew that, but the thought of the beautiful, sarcastically witty, and damaged girl he remembered being dead filled him with such a sense of overwhelming grief he could hardly stand it. She could rage at him when he found her, slap him even or call him names. He deserved that much, especially as he was seeking her out now for a favor he had no right to ask, but he simply prayed she would be alive to do those things.

In the end, it had been Snow’s tears after the twentieth cat had refused to tell them whether or not Bettina was alive that had given them their lead. An old woman with a kindly, though troubled, face had told them to seek out the legendary Puss in Boots. That task had been easy enough, though their welcome once they’d found the famous feline had not exactly been warm. It had not been until they’d been taken to meet a young blind woman, and she had announced that they would have a role to play in fighting the Empire, were they allowed in the palace, and they had been shut up there ever since. Puss had at least told them that Bettina was alive, and that she worked for him (which had come as a surprise to Branen, though he knew not why), but informed them they were not to refer to her by that name. That response had baffled Branen, but the infurating feline had not designed himself to answer any more of his questions, and Neither Bran, nor Snow had seen him since they had been ushered away to their guest quarters three days ago.

It therefore came as a bit of a shock to Branen when they were suddenly both summoned to the hall, and the young knight wasted no time getting himself ready whilst his sister practically vibrated with excitement. He could think of no other reason for them to be summoned besides Bettina, and Bran felt almost nervous as they made their way down to the main hall. The sight that greeted him however, was not the petite curvaceous woman with golden curls he had expected, but instead the tall athletic figure of a woman he had met only a handful of times, but was never likely to forget.

“Your highness!” Bran exclaimed in shock, quickly taking a knee in front of his princess to show her his fealty. Taking the cue from her brother, snow also made a polite curtsy with her head bowed.

“Might I present to you ‘ighness, Sir Branen Stonewall and Lady Snow Stonewall of Spindlewas. I do believe zey ‘ave been searching for you.” Puss introduced in a manner that came off as almost bored. His dislike of the young knight was fairly transparent, but just because he thought Bran was an uptight, overly moral cur who had no right to come seeking Bettina out now, did not mean the man did not have a value or purpose in this war. Princess Mornalee need all the loyal knights and fighters she could gather, and the ever moral Sir Branen came free.

“Your highness!”

Mornalee turned around to see a man with thick brown locks of hair approaching her. He was accompanied by a lady that had a similar resemblance to him. It was as though Morn knew who they were, but she had no memories of them. Puss's next words explained why she had such a feeling.

“Might I present to you ‘ighness, Sir Branen Stonewall and Lady Snow Stonewall of Spindlewas. I do believe zey ‘ave been searching for you.”

Spindewas. Her home country. More hope poured into Mornalee's heart. It was as if fate was on her side.
"Wait, wait, wait!!!" a voice boomed. It was Jude. "I don't understand....'your highness'? Skylar of the Sword is a knight, a vigilante. She does things for others who cannot do things for themselves. She is not a royal. She never has been. It makes no sense....everything. Everything that everyone has said is starting to make no sense. Things just aren't going in the right order. So either you all have claimed her to be someone else by mistake......or Skylar of the Sword is someone else. I ask you, Miss Skylar, just......who are you??"

Carlos tugged on Jude's shirt, but the 14 year-old stood his ground. Mornalee turned to face Jude. Her eyes were sympathetic. She sighed, and said,
"My dear child, I will explain everything later. For now, I must ask of you three to depart from the room. There are important matters i must discuss with Sir Branen and Lady Snow Stonewall."

The three children left the room quickly and quietly. Carlos and Issie fled to their rooms, while the determined Jude stayed by the door, peering his eye through the slight crack in the door.

"Now," Mornalee began to say, "It is a pleasure to meet you both. I am very interested in the reason why you both have been searching for me. Tell me, what is the purpose of your visit to the castle today?"

Alcide was not brooding, he mentally assured himself. He was not a man prone to such lethargic moods, and never would be. Alcide was merely in deep thought as he mulled over the latest conversation he’d had with his friend. Alcide liked to know as much about his enemy as possibly before facing them, and he knew too little for his liking about these Durahurne creatures. Greylord had been of some help to him on this matter, but he still was not satisfied with those answers.

“Your Emperor is either foolish or desperate to be meddling with such dark creatures.” Greylord had warned. Alcide did not altogether disagree with that assessment, but he was not so quick to discredit the power that the durahurne presented. Dangerous or not, it was impossible to deny the effect they had on the war front, which was why Alcide was wary. He’d seen these creatures in action.

“Can they be killed?” He had asked, while Greylord gave a knowing smile.

“All things can be killed my friend” Greylord had replied. “Your sword can cut through anything, even the spawn of hell itself. I have made it so.” Alcide had been a little relieved by that, but he still wished he knew his enemy better.

“So where is my princess eh? If I’m going to die fighting these beasts, I’d like a taste of my reward first.” Alcide had jokingly gripped good naturedly towards his friend. In all honesty he wasn’t in a rush to be married just yet, and especially not to any of Contalabutte’s few daughters. None were particularly comely, and were such spoilt squawking things that they reminded him more of the loud colorful birds nobles in the south kept as pets than a woman who could stir his manhood. He was starting to believe he’d trapped himself into a bad deal on that particular wish, so his friend’s response was surprising.

“Soon my friend, you will have your princess. This war brings her closer and closer to you every day.” Greylord had replied with a smirk he only wore when self-satisfied. The response confused him though, as Contalabutte had no other daughters as far as he knew, so how was there a Kalgrist princess out of his reach that would satisfy his wish?

He did not dwell though, as he soon arrived at the castle via carpet, and announced himself to the men, who knew him instantly. He was quickly led then to the Emperor and the carriage, and Alcide made a quick bow to show his fealty to the smaller man. “You summoned me your eminence?”

Branen felt dumbstruck by his luck in finding his exiled sovereigns so quickly, and rose to attention when his princess addressed him. “I was looking for a friend your highness.” Bran admitted freely. “One I had met long ago who told me she lived here. I was hoping she might keep my young sister Snow safe for me whilst I searched for Prince Dayerin and yourself. A battlefield is no safe place for children.” He explained.

“Your highness, I was gone and unable to aid your father when the Kalgrist hoards descended upon our home, but I will never abandon his children or my home. I am yours to command, whatever your orders.” Branen vowed solemnly.

“Excellent.” Puss remarked dryly.
