Had Finn lived a different life, he truly could have been something remarkable. His intelligence and drive might have propelled him to the top of all of his classes, earned him scholarships, made him successful. As is, Finn never really learned how to read or write, and has been attempting to teach himself for years. Instead, Finn is a strategist. How can you get in and out of somewhere as quick as possible, getting as much food and money as possible, and avoiding detection as much as possible. Heâs learned how to manipulate people into looking past him, into giving him what he wants, into getting what he wants. The only reason he was caught was because somebody bigger than him put him in hospital and called the police.
That said, it was his own fault. Finn is notoriously reckless, willing to sacrifice his and other peopleâs lives and wellbeing if it means getting what he wants, and sometimes even just for the fun of it. He was no regard for his own health and well-being, and occasionally has to be reminded about that of others. Heâs been known to anger guys twice his size just to see if he can get out of it. Finn can also fail to see the error of his ways at times. If he meant well, thatâs all that really matters to him. He has a bad habit of getting defensive if anyone mentions his past or the fact that he struggles with literacy. And when he gets defensive, he says things he shouldnât, and will almost never apologize for it. Finn lives by his own set of rules and has a hard time adjusting to the rules of others, finding them needlessly restrictive and illogical.
He can choose to only phase parts of his body, such as an arm or a leg. This requires more energy and concentration, and can go one of two ways. It can either result in him phasing his whole body, causing him to pass through everything around him, or else lose a grip of his power and pass out with his arm through a wall. As a result, he tends to avoid this as much as possible, save for occasionally using it as a party trick. Using his power a lot over a short period of times results in joint and limb pain that, for some reason, even the strongest painkillers wonât treat, that only rest will help.
For almost a month, Finley was on his own, stealing and begging to get by. And then another group of runaways found him. He wasn't the only mutant in the group, so they saw him as nothing different. It was easier for them to survive as a group. They never forced Finley to use his power, but he did it without hesitation. Sometimes, they could even afford hostel rooms. Finley became good at staying invisible. Until he wasn't. They crossed the wrong people, and somebody who was considerably bigger than fifteen year old Finley. He put Finn in hospital, which was where both the police and Xavier found him. Xavier got him out of trouble with the law on the condition that Finn went to the academy. Finn jumped at the opportunity of an education, a warm bed, somewhere safe to live. It was only when he got into a constant environment that people discovered the massive gaps in his education. He could read, but had the approximate reading level of a seven year old. He's been working on that since he arrived, but because he's ashamed, his progress has been slow. He's only recently reached a high school level of reading comprehension, and his handwriting is notoriously terrible.
