Introduction
Take Me to The Black is set in Joss Whedon's Firefly 'Verse, taking place somewhere in-between the events of the original show, and the Big Damn Movie, Serenity. This RP follows the marvelous misadventures of Capt. Walker and his rag-tag band of misfits aboard the Fairstar, as they ply the Outer Rim in search of wealth and glory. Well, maybe just wealth. Heck, they'd probably settle for some food and a shiny hat at this point.
It's pretty strongly advised that you watch the show and the movie first (they're both on Netflix, and strongly recommended for any Sci-Fi fan).

The Ship
The Fairstar is an Iskellian Technology Solutions-built Ackley-class cargo hauler, decommissioned some 10 years ago by pretty much every civilized shipping company, and sold for scrap. Ackleys were built on surplus frames from Alliance Military transports, and have a reputation for being nigh-indestructible, if a bit finicky at times. An Ackley like the Fairstar isn't as fast as, oh, say, a Firefly, but she's tough, quiet, dependable as long as you treat her right, with a nice big hold full of nooks and crannies and the range to go most anywhere in the 'Verse.
The Fairstar was retrofitted as a smuggling ship after her decommissioning, and has seen her share of adventure. She's a versatile craft, with a massive, open belly hold for hauling anything from food to horses to small shuttlecraft. During the War, the Alliance ship the Ackley frame is built on was used for bringing supplies and troop shuttles from deep-orbit dreadnoughts and troopships down to the surface of a planet, and the Fairstar still has two short-range military surplus shuttlecraft in her belly, and launch rails for two more. She's been fitted with a larger powerplant and more spacious fuel tanks for longer journeys, as well as all the goodies one should expect from a good blockade runner, including NavSat decoys, secret holds, and a rather illegal emissions-cloaking unit for silent running. She's even got four bow-mounted Mass Drivers, allegedly telemetry spike launchers for mineral prospecting and surveying operations, but capable of punching a hole through a Reaver ship in a pinch.
She has fairly amenable crew quarters, with running water and the modular, fold-into the walls design common to military craft and civilian tramp freighters. There are six crew cabins in total, and 4 additional slightly roomier passenger "staterooms", each with an extra bunk and a small desk in addition to the standard crew accommodations, originally intended for Alliance officers who did not wish to sleep in the shuttles with their troops. The Fairstar also has a mess hall, and a rear observation deck and conference room located above the engines, overlooking the rear of the ship.
Her cargo bay can be divided into two sections by means of a sliding shutter; the forward portion, which houses her two shuttles and a "Mule" utility hovercraft, and the aft bay, which is dedicated primarily to cargo, but still retains the launch rails and access catwalks for two additional shuttles. Both bays are of equal size, and each has a loading ramp/bay door. They can be pressurized or depressurized individually, allowing cargo to be stored in a pressurized environment while still affording the ability to depressurize the other bay and launch shuttles outside of a planet's atmosphere. Access is afforded by a central cargo elevator inside a pressurized shaft, or airlock hatches located in the crew quarters and rear deck for fore and aft bays, respectively, which open onto the upper catwalks.
The Fairstar, like most improved Ackley-class tramp freighters, has five engines; one large, central interplanetary drive and two smaller engines with 180-degree vertical rotation nozzles in the rear, and two wing-mounted, 360-degree vertical rotation Bussard hydrogen ramjets. While this setup, with its relatively small interplanetary main engine, won't be winning any races anytime soon, it is highly maneuverable and excellent for salvage operations, sticky landings and flying in tight spaces. These are largely leftovers from the Ackley's military origins: they didn't need to be overly fast, but heavy armor and maneuverability were integral to it's role as a transport, dropship and occasionally heavy gunship. Ackley-flying smugglers rely primarily on stealth, deception and, if all else fails, direct confrontation to evade capture, rather than raw speed. An Ackley's engineering bay is relatively spacious for a ship of it's size and class, due to the need to fit the drives of three engines in one room. As a result, the engine room is often used as a secondary cargo bay.
Most decommissioned Ackleys were picked up by space pirates and other disreputable individuals, leading to the class's foul reputation with most people. Ackleys are usually associated with criminals, though this is not entirely fair: they were also fairly popular with prospectors and asteroid miners. Primarily, Ackleys are famous for being nigh-indestructible, the saying being that you could fly an Ackley through a moon, and it would keep on going. While this is primarily what makes them attractive to pirates, it also makes them valuable to individuals looking to transport precious cargo, since these flying tanks are very difficult to destroy with anything short of Alliance military firepower.

Would Screwface mind if we recruited a new captain - providing everyone else is still keen?
Re: Take Me to The Black - A Firefly Tale
I lost my job around the same time I started this, and have had some other problems related to college and personal stuff, etc. Now, I'm well settled in my new job, and winter break is here, so I'll be able to breathe some life into this again.

Another thing, since the crew already knows each other, are there any relationships among us that we want to establish? In other words, are we all friends, acquaintances, just coworkers... we could discuss that sort of thing here and/or put something about it in our CS.
