The Mountains in the Mist

The Mountains in the Mist

0 INK

Cradled in the vast mountainside is a coven of very important individuals, gathered for a purpose only known to a few. Only one thing is certain - mankind sits on the brink of catastrophe. (NOW ACTIVE!) (Rated M)

1,740 readers have visited The Mountains in the Mist since little luna created it.

Introduction

NOW ACTIVE!

Welcome to Credathana, a world much like Earth. Here there are beings and creatures of magic, struggles for power, and efforts for balance.
Mankind exists here among witches, nymphs, faeries, shape-shifters, and vampires (see below for descriptions). All exist in balance, in relative peace.

Until now. As with on Earth, the humans of Credathana have begun to tip the scales of power. Balance is swaying, and now the world sits on the brink of war as creatures of magic retaliate against the growing power of men - industry.
Men have forgotten the concept of balance. They destroy the forests, taint the water, and even enslave each other.

The Na-Flaithis Circle of Thia, high order of the land, has gathered an important group of individuals to the Dusma Mountains, and enclosed them there. While war wages, these people remain trapped and unaware of their purpose. The Circle has ordered the genocide of all humans involved in the growth of industry, and the destruction of all man-made structures. Balance must be returned, they claim.
But The Circle is corrupt. Those with greedy agendas have taken out the Supreme Ruler Of Thia, Raghnall, and sealed him under a spell of magic. He was too lenient on the humans, they thought. But they couldn't destroy him, lest they condemn themselves to a worse fate.

The Coven of Dusma consists of the following individuals. Most do not know their purpose. A few do.
Bold characters are taken. Italicized characters are reserved for TWO DAYS ONLY from the time of request.
NOTE: Some characters have more opportunity for customization than others. If nothing is written next to the name, you have FREE REIGN. You may not change aspects listed next to names.
Characters who are aware of their purpose will be sent this information after they have been confirmed.

Brennan
A half-vampire who knows his purpose on Dusma. He is a very old magical being, but appears to be between the ages of 25 and 35. Brennan is secretive, curt, and determined in his duties. He is firm and commanding, and though he has never been known to lose his temper, can be quite severe and intimidating.

Caine
A powerful witch who has command over the element of fire. He is between the ages of 20 and 40. Caine also knows his purpose. He is sarcastic, commanding, and smug. He treats his inferiors with little respect. Fiona is his mate.

Keaira
A nymph who seems to have forgotten everything about herself. She is shy, non-confrontational, and appears fragile. Since she remembers nothing, she is cautious around others, but also seeks to find out what she has forgotten. Everyone else, however, is content to stay away from her. Everyone, that is, but Brennan, who seems to have made it his job to shelter her.

Fiona
A witch who has command over the element of fire. She is bold and opinionated. Caine is her mate. She knows little about Caine's purposes, but suspects they may not all be honest. She is between the ages of 20 and 40.

Declan
A shape-shifter who was not originally supposed to be on Dusma. He knows his purpose, and has a special interest in Keaira. He is kind and genuine, and is between the ages of 20 and 30
.

Unfortunates:
These are people who were trapped accidentally when The Circle enclosed the coven on Dusma. Their small village still exists, and the coven has made it their home. ONLY ONE MAY BE A FAERIE.

1. Demp Ortollo

2. [Must be male]

3. Pia

4. [May be either]

5. [May be either]

Descriptions:

Witches
These people have command over one chosen element of magic (fire, water, earth, wind). They may also have healing powers.

Faeries
Tiny people with the magic of healing and blessing. They have wings and can be affiliated with any of the magical elements. Faeries have limited life-spans, and live longer when balance and peace prosper. The destruction of the forests, in effect, lessen their lives and can even kill them. They are directly linked to the land. They are very rare.

Nymphs
They are ageless creatures of magic. Nymphs control passive elements like wind, water, and earth. They are said to be of the closest relation to the gods. Nymphs are exceedingly rare.

Shape-Shifters
These are witches who do not control elements, but instead change shape. Shape-shifters only change into animals, and usually have a specialty. The most experienced ones change into a maximum of three animals. Most can only handle one.

Vampires
These are semi-demonic beings that are not typical "vampires." They are not dead or undead. They do live, breath, and must eat to survive. These vampires feed on blood as a form of nutrient-rich sustenance, but also eat other foods. They also feed off the magical energies of other beings, simply by standing close to them, or making physical contact.

The walk towards the cottage was unbearably silent, and tense. Fiona was extremely angry, only succeeding in infuriating herself even further by dwelling on the situation. Obviously, since Caine didn't deny keeping secrets, he was hiding something. It just made her all the more upset, and though she'd never confess it, all the more fearful and worried. Being so alike in terms of valuing honesty, it made Fiona uneasy with this whole situation. They'd always told everything to each other, so for him to be keeping a secret from her willingly was quite shocking for her. On top of that, whatever this secret is, was making him comfortable with being in this dreadful little town. The Caine she knew..or rather thought she knew, would've been jumping at every chance he got to free them. This was what probably what was the most unsettling. Why did he suddenly want to stay here of all places? Was there some kind of trouble he was in, and foolishly trying to avoid by staying in Dusma? A secret debt to be paid off? Or worse, some secret lover he wanted to stay close to by being here?

Fretting like this all the way to the cottage, Fiona just about collapsed on her bed when she had made it to her room. This whole day had taken a toll on her, mentally and physically. After getting up for a moment to draw a bath, she raided through her closet for a towel, and some purple pyjamas. She then brought them into the bathroom with her and locked the door, determined to have a mind-easing moment to herself.

After staying in the bath for what seemed like hours to her, She got out, changing into her nightclothes and going back to her room, finally able to collapse on her bed comfortably. A flitting thought came to her mind, suggesting that she go and help Caine with dinner, but chose against it, for the sake of not wanting another fight, and not giving in when she was this angry at him. Suddenly feeling restless, she began to do what calmed her down best- sketching. This time, she was drawing her clearing from memory, trying to focus on every little detail she could remember, until it seemed that the sketch had taken a mind of its own and two figures, resembling her and Caine appeared in her drawing, with the both of them tense, angry, and like always- arguing. Now frustrated with even the sketch, she threw her drawing across the room with her pencils, while emmitting a loud sigh. As much as she hated to admit it... if things kept up the way they were, she...might cave first. She sighed again, this time a bit softer. Everyone knew how much she hated caving first.

Declan let out as much of a gasp as a Hawk can muster as he watched what Keaira was doing. She had her hand past the barrier it appeared that if you went under it through water you could pass through the barrier. But that was all just an assumption and it wasn’t a chance Declan would be willing to take especially if while being halfway through the barrier it decided to reconstruct itself and then separating his upper half from his lower half, besides Declan still had to find a way to help Keaira regain her past memories.

Either way this deserved a closer inspection regardless of the risk it might entail. The hawk took flight and this time made his perch in a tree that was almost directly above the stream where Keaira was putting her hand underneath the barrier. It seemed almost too good to be true that they could escape, but while the barrier problem was somewhat solved there was still Brennan. A mysterious man that Declan still hadn’t been sure what to make of.

Keaira seemed to consider Brennan's words, but was underwhelmed by them. Her nose crinkled in thought. It didn't look dangerous, or even feel like something that could hurt her.
"If you say so, Brennan, but something just makes me feel like it's not meant to do harm." It was odd, indeed, but there was something about being so close to the magic barrier that triggered a strange sensation in her. Looking at the water, then to the underbrush around them, Keaira gradually too in her surroundings, as if through clearer eyes. The forest was so intimate to her now, more so than ever. She could feel life pulsating around her.
"Do you feel that?" She was whispering, to Brennan, she supposed, but she didn't look anywhere in particular.
Suddenly her gaze shot up to a hawk on a branch nearby. There was something... off. Something off about this hawk. It didn't feel right, and she couldn't place why. Her gaze turned critical, something foreign to her the past two weeks. She scrutinized the hawk, her eyes tracing the lines of its silhouette, the edges of each feather... the color of its eyes. She settled there, on the eyes. For a moment, the hawk felt very unlike any other animal she'd seen. For reasons she couldn't begin to explain, she began to think it wasn't really a hawk. But that was silly, of course...
She reached up towards it, almost begging it to come down to her.

Declan was not surprised when Keaira noticed his presence and he was again not surprised as she began to reach up gently towards him but this now put him in a predicament. He could either fly away or ignore the woman like a normal animal probably would, or he could accept her invitation and perch himself on her body. The problem was that if he was captured and held prisoner soon enough it would be discovered exactly what Declan was, although he didn’t expect that Keaira would allow harm to come to an animal.

Happy with his decision Declan hopped off of the branch and began to glide down towards Keaira before landing on her forearm and holding himself there carefully so as not to lacerate her skin with his razor sharp talons. Declan had hoped that Keaira may be able to regain some of her memories if she interacted with an animal after all she was someone who’s very power had to do with nature and its creatures. But while he was now holding himself on Keaira he was carefully watching both her and more specifically Brennan as he wouldn’t put it past the man to harm an animal or even another person.

Brennan watched with increasing consternation as Keaira gradually began to be more aware of the world around her including the hawk that had been observing them from nearby. Brennan had noticed its presence but ignored it as simply a curious creature but now he took a closer look and realised that something was not right about the bird. Senses honed from many long years told him to be wary of the bird and he liked it not at all that it had now landed on Keaira. But he had learned the hard way that recklessness usually caused more harm than good and watching and waiting were more effective methods. He would not harm the bird whilst it was with Keaira as he did not want to damage the relationship he had with her but he would be keeping a close eye on it from now on.
He moved closer so that he stood by her shoulder making sure he was within easy reach if the bird attacked her. He knew she would not expect such an attack as she was too innocent for that which was why she needed someone like him to protect her.

"Be cautious Keaira, the bird is wild and therefore unpredictable." He said calmly.

"It won't hurt me," she said calmly, confidently. "I can feel its intentions; it will not harm me."
She spoke the truth. Keaira sensed something about the bird that was personified; its life-flow was steady, without kinks. She could feel the magic aura so strongly, she could almost see it. It was intricate, but not unkind.
Keaira glanced to Brennan. "I hope you won't think I'm crazy for saying so," she began slowly, "but I don't think this is a real bird." She looked back to the bird then, and stroked its sleek body with her free hand. "He's something else..."
She stopped mid-stroke, her hand resting on the hawk's body. Her eyes stared straight ahead, unblinking.

She was in the forest. Leaves crumpled beneath her bare feet. Every step, every contact with the earth surged with energy. She reached out and touched the bark of a tree. Its life was at her fingertips. She felt it pulsating, breathing.
She looked around. This forest was beautiful, lush. It was unlike any she had seen before. Deer ran about and paid her no mind. Rabbits fed on the underbrush. Mice scurried to their holes.
She found herself naked, but felt at complete peace. Touching a hand to her bosom, she took a deep breath, exhaling as she pulled her hand away. Glittering magic flowed forth, pouring into the ground before her. A young rowan sprouted and grew, and as she wrapped her arms about the sapling, she became one with the forest.

She blinked suddenly, looking around. This was fake. Something told her... this was not right. It was at the tip of her tongue, but she couldn't vocalize it, couldn't quite remember...

As the two people began to talk about him Declan started to worry a bit especially when Keaira came to the conclusion or idea that he wasn’t a real bird. But that was okay for now at least as she wouldn’t let Brennan harm him at least. But then Keaira went silent and stopped stroking him he looked upwards at her face and noticed that she was staring off into space as if she were seeing things that weren’t really here. It slightly worried him and began to unnerve him a bit and he started to become restless on her arm moving slightly as if preparing to fly away.

No matter what happened Declan knew that he would need to leave soon anyways. Especially because of the suspicion that had been raised and focused on him. Besides he had learned valuable information during his short escapade as a bird. There was in fact a way to escape from the barrier, Brennan appeared to have a very special interest in Keaira and cared for her well being and Keaira herself still seemed to have some kind of a link to animals. Declan hoped that he could exploit this in the future to help her remember.

Brennan watched as she stroked the bird and he was reminded of her natural affinity with all creatures in nature, if he had not been so concerned about this sudden turn of events he might have thought it was beautiful. But it worried him greatly that the barrier was not as impenetrable as it had first seemed and was in fact flawed. Adding to that was Keaira was behaving unpredictably and Brennan was more than a little concerned as he disliked it when events did not unfold as he had thought they would. He had seen little risk in taking her to see the barrier and now it would seem that more had been lost than gained. But he did not regret the decision as he had learned that regrets were meaningless and simply wasted valuable energy. Energy he would use in learning who or what that bird really was as Keaira was right. It was not a normal bird. Being the way he was meant that he was able to pick up on things such as this and it was a mystery he intended to solve.

He was distracted from his thoughts when he noticed Keaira suddenly become very still and stare off into the distance as though seeing something he could not or perhaps...remembering something.

"Keaira, what is it?" He asked and the concern was evident in his voice.

Keaira turned at the sound of Brennan's voice. Seeing him after coming back was unusual. He seemed different to her. Her brow creased in thought. His life-force didn't feel as vibrant as the rest. He was different from them, somehow. A nagging feeling clawed at the back of her neck, making her feel ill at ease.
"Something's not right." For the first time since she'd lost her memory, fear entered her voice. "This isn't right. It doesn't feel right. And you..." she couldn't make herself tell him. He was familiar, but at the same time, newly foreign. What was happening to her? She shook her head mildly, as if trying to clear out the thoughts.
She lifted up her arm and gently shook it, urging the hawk to take flight. She suddenly felt the urge to run, to get away from him. She had no idea where the feeling came from, but it pulled at her with great force.
After the hawk took flight, she bolted through the forest like a scared animal.

Brennan prided himself on being a calm, contolled person who rarely allowed emotion to cloud his judgement as all that did was make a person weaker and more prone to making rash decisions. Yet when he saw the look Keaira gave him it sent alarm through his entire being. Did she know the truth about him? If so how did she know? What could he do about it? All of these thoughts and more whirled through his mind and he tried to order them in a cool logical fashion like he did with everything. He tried to break the situation down and consider it from every angle, and plan an action for each variable but his mind kept returning to the fear that she knew what he was and would no longer trust him. If she did not trust him he could not watch and protect her which was vital.

He opened his mouth to speak, though having no real idea what he would say, but stopped as he saw her suddenly turn and run. It occurred to him then that she was remembering something from her past something that was teaching her more about herself. That was dangerous and Brennan knew that he had to try and prevent her from remembering too much but he honestly had no idea how to do that. But more important than that right then was her safety and he did not trust no harm to come to her whilst she was alone. He took after her confident that at the speed he ran he would catch up with her easily, he just hoped no one sae him as that could raise questions he was not willing to answer.
"Kearia stop!" He called, hoping that his commanding tone would halt her bolting as she had responded to it before.

After Declan had been forced to take flight or fall to the ground Keaira had bolted off into the forest like a deer that realized a predator was watching it. Declan wasn’t quite sure who she was running from but if it was Brennan that was a good thing but a bad thing at the same time as there were a few creatures in the forest that could bring harm to Keaira, and Declan would rather have her safe than dead because if she died all was lost.

So he immediately flew high into the air quickly scanning into the woods looking for where Keaira might have run of too. After a short time he was able to find her thanks to the sharp and powerful vision of a hawk. He quickly descended into the woods landing just off the ground and hidden in some bushes he transformed again this time into a creature that would be able to halt Keaira. A snow white wolf.

Leaping from the bushes Declan was quickly ambushed by a barrage of scents and for a moment was overwhelmed until he was able to recognize one of them, it was Keaira’s scent. Declan quickly followed it and then moved through the forest so he could head her off. In the end Declan emerged from the forest directly in the path that Keaira had chosen. Before her was a snow white wolf standing proudly on all four paws and gazing at her is if he wanted to speak to her but lacked the ability to voice human words.

That Brennan could so easily keep up alarmed her greatly. She'd had a good head-start. How could he run so quickly?
She breezed through the woods with little effort. Her body seemed to know every tree and bush, keeping her from running into anything. It all felt so familiar.
Keaira came to a stop abruptly at Brennan called out, but that wasn't the only thing that alerted her. A wolf stood in her path. Prickles ran down her spine. The creature scared her, but at the same time, she felt as though she'd met it before. That was absurd, of course. Keaira didn't recall ever seeing a wolf, especially a white one.
"What is this?!" She screamed, collapsing on the ground. Head buried in her hands, she curled into the fetal position and began sobbing fiercely. Her small body shook with the effort.
Pieces of memories, images, voices, sounds... all of it swirled inside her head chaotically.

Brennan slowed as he began to catch up to Keaira as he did not want to frighten her any further, she already seemed to have an idea that he was not what he seemed and he did not want to encourage that idea to grow. He saw Keaira stop suddenly as a white wolf seemingly blocked her path and Brennan decided there was something odd about the animal. It occurred to him then that this was the second animal to act oddly around Keaira and in such a short space of time, he had an idea what it meant but he was not certain. Either way he did not want Keaira anywhere near a wolf unless he knew the animal was not going to harm her.

As soon as he saw her collapse to the ground he ran to her side momentarily forgetting that he should control his movements so as to not attract attention. He did not even stop to think as concern for her overwhelmed his normal logical thinking and anyone watching would notice that he moved very quickly, a little too quickly for a human. He seemed to blur around the edges for a moment and then he was at Keaira's side, he gently encircled her with his arms and began to talk to her soothingly. Though everyone in the village would agree that Brennan was a cold man none would argue that he showed more warmth to Keaira than anyone else. He kept his low and calm and simply murmured to her that she was safe and there was no need to be frightened.

He did not try and move her as he felt it best to calm her first, as he very gently rocked her back and forth as though soothing a small child his eyes never left the wolf standing a short distance away. Up until now the wolf had simply watched and although Brennan was sure now that this wolf was not a normal creature he was not certain that it would not harm Keaira and that he would not allow.

"You will not harm her." Brennan said to it quietly yet the steel in his voice was impossible to miss.

Caine

Caine finished putting away the groceries in grudging silence, constantly watching the bedroom door from the corner of his eye. He wished Fiona would come out already. He wasn't sure what he was going to say to her, but the tense atmosphere was becoming unbearable and it had to be broken somehow. Just not by him... no. He wanted to let her do it, let her cave and come out. His back stiffened with resolve. Yes, she would do it.
About an hour passed without signs of the door even budging. Impatient and frustrated, Caine started chopping up some vegetables for a stew. He aggressively hacked at them, putting the cut pieces into a pot of boiling water. He was an awful cook - he knew that. But he didn't care; that's what she would get for making him wait. If she so much as complained about the food...
Caine heaved a sigh as he paced. Still no Fiona. The stew was done and getting cold. He finally sat down at the table and ate in brewing silence. He wouldn't call her, check on her, or ask if she was hungry. He was that stubborn.
Wanting to coax her out, Caine emptied the remaining stew into a bowl and then noisily knocked the heavy pot onto the floor. The bang was quite loud. That should lure her out, he thought. Surely, she would say something first. She had to.

Becoming increasing hungry by the minute with the sounds of Caine cooking and eating, Fiona walked down the stairs and towards the kitchen. Not once did she even glance at Caine, flipping her hair over to one side to create a temporary "barrier" of some sorts as she walked towards the bowl of stew at the corner. She looked at it warily. Caine's cooking wasn't exactly up-to-par. Tasting one spoonful, she immediately grabbed spices from the cabinet, doctoring the flavorless soup up until it tasted phenomenal. She then brought the soup and sat down at the table acroos from Caine, not speaking and not looking up. The tension in the room was palpable. 'If this is going to improve in the slightest, Caine will have to be the one to break the silence,' she thought stubbornly. Her resolve may have been breaking a little bit, but she was way too stubborn to be broken this easily.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

All is well. I hope you stay safe where ever you go!

As for your character, if you could leave him open to be adopted, that would be great. I may try to fill him in. If not, that's okay too.

It's been fun. :)

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

I really can't promise that I will be able to post again. I've been getting more busy and have had less time for roleplays here. I as well am going to be leaving within two weeks for almost a year or so. It might be best just to continue without me and I can disband my character.

I have had fun while it lasted though and thanks for letting me join. I regret that I have to leave.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

I have decided to take over Caine. Snowfall hasn't posted in over a week, and has not replied to my PMs. Rather than find a new one, I will act as Caine.

I will post as Keaira again after there's a post from Medic.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

Belynta you can go ahead and post if you want. I just got back today and I am very tired.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

Yeah that is fine with me.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

Medic, I hope you don't mind my little godmode about you leaving Keaira's arm.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

I am going to let Declan respond to Keaira before I post again as I am curious as to what he will do.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

Note to everyone: This rp is largely character driven, but I'm going to be pressing plot to keep interest. If you are unsure of a detail I've either told you or implied, PLEASE ASK VIA PM. Thanks!

New fact so far! It appears that the barrier isn't foolproof. Objects submerged in water are able to pass. What could this mean for everyone?!

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

Sorry to see you go... but I understand how it can be hard to do multiple rps at once.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

Sorry guys, I just let go of Demp. I really can't continue in this roleplay because I don't feel too connected to the characters. In addition, I don't think that I wrote Demp well. He just doesn't seem human at all to me. Too mechanical. I would be lying if I said that my other roleplay wasn't a factor; it's hard to switch between the two and not get the plots mixed up. So I am leaving Mountains in the Mist.

(This was my fault however)

I apologize for leaving and being unable to keep up with the roleplay.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

I'm going to be gone for about 4 days I'll post when I get back.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

Angel, I'm assuming Daniel is a human. If he isn't then I'll edit, unless it's understandable for Caine to have made the same assumption :) (Anything to place this flirtatious jerk in lower esteem, naturally...)

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

Posting shall be impossible/extremely sporadic until Sunday. Or Monday. Sry.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

Thanks Snowfall, and thank you for telling me... sorry if you felt I pushed Caine around... I was just kinda in this inspirational mood and wanted a good, yet suspenseful ending.

Oh and by the way, I really don't imagine Fiona as a pyromaniac or a floosy. I made up the David situation to create conflict and build tension between her and Caine, in my mind the situation had been an extremely out-of-ordinary thing for her. As for the flower, Fiona tends to act irrationally when angered, but also thought the burning flower would be an interesting take to one of her sketches.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

"Is Jersh secretly the manifestation of the Great Old Ones sent to smuggle contraband kittens across the Dusma barrier?"

.....not much of a secret anymore....tch....thanks

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

I'll answer:

Was The Mountains in the Mist originally planned to have romance-relationship elements?
Not planned, but open to the possibility.

Is Keaira pronounced "Key-AYR-eh"?
Close. Key-air-uh.

Is she secretly an all-powerful being whose untapped abilities can destroy worlds?
This much is secret. I can't confirm or deny anything without giving away hints. Sorry! ;)

Did she have a different personality before the memory wipe?
This much won't hurt to tell - no.

Would she be interested in purchasing Ortollo Clockwear™ Hoodies?
Nope. She's content with simple things.

Is Fiona a floozy? Is she a pyromaniac?
Angel may have a different opinion on this, but my original thought for Fiona was that no, she is neither of those things.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

It's good to see some interplayer interactions in the roleplay. One problem I always run into is dialogue. It's so hard to get a conversation going in posts if you and the character aren't on at the same time, especially if there's more than two parties in the conversation and the third doesn't post quickly enough.

Several thoughts on the roleplay, organized as little as possible.

Have I become schizophrenic?
Oh here are my pills?
I'll post some proper activity as soon as possible; 26 hours in a bus is looking grimmer with every passing second.

Re: [OOC] The Mountains in the Mist

Angel, I liked your last post, I can already feel Caine's exasperation with Fiona the troublemaker...

But in regards to the god-modding little luna mentioned, I would prefer you not to write anything about Caine that I haven't written myself. Rather than move him about, feel free to drop me a line here or via PM. I'm happy to cooperate with any ideas you have :) I would've taken the opportunity to interact with Fiona even if you hadn't placed Caine there, so it's not a big deal this time, but in future ask first - the likelihood is ye shall receive :)

I won't be using the line you had Caine say at the end of your post (it's a big word for him xD), but the gist will be essentially the same.

Thanks.
