"And this is why free healthcare is a thing, most places. I take it you don't live round here then?" As far as Adrian was aware, Wing City had a reasonable level of public healthcare. "That sucks, though."

Adrian looked back down at the fallen man with only a smidgeon of sympathy. "Serves him right I reckon."

The door of the bar swung open, a blast of cold air drifting in as it swung shut behind the form of a teen. Adrian Greyson cast his eyes around the bar in a cursory inspection before retreating to a corner near to the fire -- he might not be able to order anything, but it was warm here, and that was good enough for him.

Adrian looked up in shock at the scene unfolding at the bar counter - Tycho shouting at Jennifer. The breaking glass. It was all too familiar. His jaw dropped and he screwed his eyes shut, cursing that this was the night he'd decided to spend in a bar surrounded by fucking alcohol. What did he expect? That people wouldn't be poisoning their brains? This was what it did.

"Fuck fuck fuck fuck..." the teenager cursed, staring at the floor.

Adrian flinched away in surprise as Yanni approached him, "What the fu- oh, it's you." the teenager let out a breath, looking up at Yanni, "Good to see you I gue-"

He cut off as Tycho's fist made contact with Jessica, eyes widening and voice choking. "Stop him!" he shouted out, "He'll kill her!" he tore his eyes away and stared down again, "That's what fucking dirtbag drunkards do."

And that was the point where Adrian kicked Tycho in the groin. A habit of his. Having turned invisible, the teenager had made a beeline for the fight and decided that he was going to do something this time. He wasn't going to be paralysed. He didn't even know this woman, or why he was helping her... he just couldn't let something like this happen around him again while he hid in a corner.

Adrian Greyson absented himself invisibly from the bar in the confusion.

This street was quiet, much like many of those a little bit away from the heart of Wing City. There were only a few passers-by, making it a far from ideal place for Adrian's purposes. He was back to his old ways - pickpocketing, shoplifting. All kinds of things that are laughably easy for someone who can disappear.

The credit chip had been worthless. He should have known it. As soon as he'd turned traitor on that asshole in the suit (double backstab, not his lowest point but definitely far from something he was proud of) he'd have been on his phone and getting the money he'd promised Adrian revoked.

So that was how he got by. He stayed in shelters mostly, or sometimes in peoples' houses. Not that they knew - spare rooms didn't see much use and nobody noticed the slight impression on the covers from the invisible kid. Life was alright. A lot of people had it worse, certainly.

Right now, Adrian was on his way towards the city centre after one such pit-stop. A nice family of five, two young kids and one teenager and their parents. The teenager had been at a friend's house, so his room had been undisturbed for the night. When the others were at their respective jobs and daycares, he'd even caught a shower. He was an old hand at this.

Adrian looked up with a start as Yanni spoke, jumping away from her in shock, anticipating ... well, he didn't know what. Something unpleasant. He was ready to vanish into nothingness when he recognised her.

"Fuck! Don't creep up on me like that!" he hissed, wringing his hands.

Adrian shrugged, "I wasn't paying attention." he grumbled, chastising himself for being so inattentive. Anyone could have snuck up on him! But then, until recently, he'd not had to worry about people sneaking up on him. Except maybe a mugger, and they seldom picked on kids that didn't look like they had shit all to steal.

"I'm alive," he replied, shrugging, "No better or worse than before. I get by."

"A little bit of a lot of somewheres," Adrian replied, "That's how I work. It's how I've always worked. I'm a squatter, but people are still in the places I squat in." The youth shook his head, "I've not run into anyone that seemed interested in me. That's the most I can say."

At Yanni's final question, he shrugged, "It's what I know. I don't need anyone to take care of me. I can take care of myself."

Adrian scoffed, "That's never worked out well before. And I'm older than I look, anyway. I've been on my own for six years. I can handle it." He sighed, looking down, "I'm sorry. I don't mean to be unpleasant, I'm just ... not used to talking to people much."

Adrian looked up at Yanni, then down at the ground. He was peripherally aware of Mishkah's presence, but confident enough that she wasn't up to anything that he was pretending she wasn't there. Did he want somewhere reliable to stay? He'd tried it a few times before. There were the hostels, the foster parents. He'd never lasted more than two weeks in one place. People would always try and tell him what he could and couldn't do, like he didn't know better how to take care of himself.

He sighed, "I don't know how well that would work out." he said, shaking his head, "I've never stayed with anyone for long. It's never meshed well with me, not since ... since I left home." Maybe there was something about sneaking his way into peoples' houses and rooms with them none the wiser that made things seem exciting.

That sounded a little creepy though, so he wasn't gonna go with that.

"I guess it can't hurt to stay a while. I don't know how long for."

"Okay, I guess." Adrian said, nodding tentatively, "I'm not putting my foot back in that .. suited guy business again am I? 'Don't care about being shot repeatedly' guy?"

He shuddered, "Most guys just take a kick to the nuts and they're gone before they figure out I'm invisible. That guy's ... yeah, no."

"Would I still be on the street if they were?" Adrian shook his head, taking off after Yanni, "No, the chip was empty by the time I got to a bank. I was hoping he'd forget, but guess not."

He looked over at Yanni, examining her injuries - those that he could see. "I notice that now. Can't you skip town? I wouldn't want to hang around with a guy like that after me."

"Good luck with that..." Adrian murmured, "Guy seemed pretty disinclined towards dying last time." He grimaced at the memory. That was one thing less welcoming about this city. The people that weren't people.

"There's always somewhere to go. Even if it isn't a house or anything. There are always new places."

There was a vague groan from inside the room, but unlike most teenagers, Adrian was good at getting up quickly on demand. After all, even sleeping invisible, if someone came back and sat on their bed when you were in it? You were in trouble.

"I'll be there in a minute," he called through the door, sliding out of the bed and starting to pull his clothes on. The smell of food was another big motivator. Waking up to breakfast smells was a new experience, and it sure beat just nabbing a pastry from town. Those always tasted dry with a hint of guilt.

When Adrian emerged down in the kitchen ten minutes later, it was with wet hair and a slight smile on his face. "I found the shower," he said, eyes wandering around the room, obviously impressed. He'd had a quick look around yesterday, but hadn't properly taken in that this was where he was going to be living.

It was nice. "Whoa," he said as he sat himself down, taking in the array of food, "You really went all out, huh? You don't have to make so much effort for me, you know. But thanks, a lot."

The youth wasn't exactly sure what to say, and whether he was supposed to wait to eat till after ... something. It'd take a while to get used to sitting down and eating a meal at a table, with company.

After just a moment more hesitation, Adrian went ahead and started eating with obvious enthusiasm, though he did his best to avoid being too uncouth.

"Uhm, a while. I eat alright, mostly things people or shops won't miss." He admitted, "Shoplifting is really .. easy for me."

Coughing, he trailed off. He didn't imagine that Yanni would care much about petty crime, but it was still sort of awkward to bring up.

"I'm not sure if you're trying to tell me to knock before I go into rooms with closed doors, or ..." Adrian raised an eyebrow, smirking as Yanni went on, "Oh, right, yeah. Of course."

Teenage boys were teenage boys, what were you gonna do? "But yeah, okay. I can live with that. What was it you wanted to talk about?"

Adrian's eyes widened slightly, "How am I gonna help with that? Hiding until he dies of exhaustion? Trip him off a cliff?" he shrugged slightly, "Not that I don't wanna help, but I dunno how useful I can be fighting a guy like that."
