The Unwilling Protector

Occupation: None

Age: 22
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 250

Species: Human
Race: Unknown
Affliction: Collarbound

Birthplace: Sozo
Nationality: Pakecha
Current Residence: Terra

Equipment:
Polearm

Personality

Cold, curt, and calculating, Duke is not the most social of men, nor is he the kindest of them. It is difficult to read his eyes, as they stay as frigid as an icy wasteland, and his mouth, just as silent. It takes patience to be with this man for that reason, and one cannot begin to mention his constant, brooding temper.

So begins...

Duke Smith's Story

The second he heard someone behind him, Duke would not give him the chance to threaten him. The second he heard the strap being unlaced, he turned swiftly, fork held tightly in his fist, as he tried to jam it into the man's neck. There were kinks in armor. Spaces. Places they did not actually protect. They all had them, otherwise the wearer would not be able to move.

At the same time he used to try and sink the fork into the man's neck, he reached for his polearm, spinning it in his hand and holding it beside him as he tried to slide backwards.

Duke said only one thing.

"I was eating."

That was the only thing he had been concerned about. It was the only thing he wanted to do. It was the only thing he had been looking up to all. Day.

But noooooo. He could not even do that much. Spinning the polearm one more time, he pointed the tip toward Kaiser's throat. It would be at least a foot away from him, but the posture was threatening. He tried not to baby his injuries. He had a large chunk missing from both his shoulder and calf. Like someone had scooped the flesh out with a spoon.

As Taylor came in, his eyes darted toward her. Almost expectantly. But the woman went ahead to the bar for a drink.

Fuuu-

"I...want...to...eat." said Duke darkly, brows knitting. He did not look at Taylor as she advanced toward them. He kept his eyes on Kaiser's, the bright blues locked on like a tracking device.

The second Taylor jumped and whipped out the towel, presuming that Kaiser had been blinded, Duke brought, not the bladed end of the polearm, but the butt of it, the pommel, forward, trying to ram it into Kaiser's throat.

Oh, great. Duke watched Kaiser duck under the pommel thrust, but did not panic. The polearm was not heavy, not as large as most, and someone like Duke, practiced with it, knew he was at an advantage. Watching the man rush toward him, Duke pressed down on his elbow, which had been drawn across the handle when he went in for the pommel strike. This action allowed for the polearm to flip again.

The blade swung forward in an underhand slash, just as Kaiser rushed forward. It would jam into his shoulder before the elbow strike came if Duke succeeded.

Duke stood back. Splurt. Blood dripped down his leg. That had been his worst injury so far. He had been going so easy on it, but the scabs would eventually give away. It did not bleed horribly, but it throbbed. He looked toward Taylor. She was in worse condition. His eyes came back to Kaiser. They were not cold anymore. The ice had melted. There was only fire.

Stepping back once more, Duke kept the blade pointed towards Kaisier's throat, walking around him to join Taylor.

Duke agreed wholeheartedly, but he let Taylor do all the talking. He just glared at Kaiser behind those blonde bangs, narrowing his eyes. He twisted the polearm, frowning deeply.

Then, as Taylor collapsed, he grunted. With one final glance to Kaiser, Duke reached down to pick the girl up with one arm, never looking away from the armored man.

Spirits be dammed, he did not have time for this.

Duke took Taylor upstairs, wary as ever. He had already rented a room for them. It was with stolen money, and he had not told Taylor, but he was tired of sleeping somewhere cold and damp and horrible.

They would be in one of the rooms, two beds between them. Taylor would be on one, with bandages wrapped around her wounds. In the bathroom there had been a medkit with creams and other supplies. Duke used them, along with a bit more of what magic he could spark. Again, they caused it only to lightly scab.

Dammit. That magic had been more useful than he thought. Life had gotten too easy with Luli around. She never got hurt. He did.

When she came to, he lifted his head from his seat on the other bed. "How are you?"

Duke clasped his fingers and leaned his chin upon his thumbs, blue orbs pointed toward Taylor intently. He watched her movements, he watched the flush of her skin. He saw the obvious signs. "No." he replied, sitting up and propping her ankle on his knee.

"You need to sleep, or you go to the hospital." What he was talking about, of course, was a blood transfusion or some other type of treatment, because she was not getting out of here without some kind of treatment.

"How do you feel."

"Then we go to the hospital." he stated simply, trying to remember where it was. He had passed it countless times and never gave it a second glance. He did not know why. "I'm not a doctor. I don't know what possibly could be wrong. Maybe it punctured a lung or something when you landed on his shoulder." He shook his head.

"When you're ready."

He looked at her flatly and said, "In the future. After the hospital." He thought this was a good enough deal. Plus, she would just have to sleep for a little while longer.

"If you want me to, I can knock you out before you get there."

In truth, it was an entirely serious question. It probably did not sound like it at all, but the man was sincere. He did not like the hospital, either.

"Why would they keep you there?" he asked, raising a brow. The look said "Idiot."

He got up and sighed, pressing on his knees and leaning his weight forward. For a moment, his leg bent under that weight. The chomp on his leg. He shrugged it off quickly, however, as if it had done nothing to him.

"Lets go."

Duke came into Gambit's.

He was a tall and well-built man, wearing a bit of light armor and a cloak over his shoulders, hiding half of his body. Dirty blonde hair fell over his face, concealing all but one bright blue eye. He looked rough, and the glower that he held on his face only enhanced the fact. He walked all the way to the counter with what almost seemed like a limp. It would be hard to tell.

Sitting down, he looked toward the doors, as if expecting someone to come in after him.

The man's eyes followed Taylor as she walked in and sat down. He slipped a bag of coins from his pocket, then paid for the drink he plugged into the touch-screen. It seemed as if he did not mind them so much. After all, he did not have to speak to it.

Taylor, however...

"Quiet." he said, eyes peering around at the three others in the bar.

He replied only with a small, "Mn," as the drinks came. Mead. Nothing any more delicate for the stony man.

He took a glance at Taylor, just as he took a gulp from his drink. "Only here." He rolled one shoulder back uncomfortably. The one still hidden beneath he cloak. He did not seem pleased even then. However...Duke, the way he was...was rarely pleased with anything.

Duke's glare was venomous. His silence spoke for him. Eventually he just closed his eyes and took another sip.

Telepathy...never again.

"You're a child." he told her in the least amount of words he could manage. Passing notes. Teasing. Of course, it's not anything the man had not heard before, and certainly not something he could not handle.

Another gulp, another glance at Taylor. There was a pattern here somewhere.

"The bow?" he asked, raising a brow. A year. He had been gone a whole year. Of course she might have improved, not to mention the woman had become a ranger from the cage fighter she had been before.

"How much do you miss?" he asked slyly.

"Good job." he said, hands clasping over his mug. "Show me." He paused, thinking for a moment. "Later."

If Taylor really had become good with a bow, then that was good news. Or bad news. She attracted far too much attention for her own good. But, perhaps a bow was just the right weapon she needed.

Especially against her.

Duke had observed the same as Taylor from the corner of his eye. He pretended as if he had not seen a thing, however, and drank from his mug.

He was not comfortable with the demon there. Duke did not doubt he would be able to at least take him, but he would rather not go through the trouble, especially after the show he just put up in front of them.

"I'm full."

Duke had been standing by as judge, ten or so feet to the side with his arms crossed and his eyes trained onto her bow.

How much could she have improved in a year? One year. He bet she had some experience back in the cage fighting days, but he could not be sure how much.

As she let the arrow fly, and he found it sinking into the target quite dangerously, an eyebrow went up.

"How much?" he asked, gesturing to the arrow, then to the bow, "Training?"
