Theme

James is an 18 year old Pokemon trainer born and raised in Eterna City. Forever by his side is a special Pokemon, Shirona. Shirona is a shiny Gardevoir as she is blue rather than the average green. The two met when James was taking a stroll through the forest, against his mother's warnings when he was 13, thinking he could handle it by now. He saw a small blue Ralts, badly hurt already being attacked by some Gastly's. Not stopping to wonder how the Ralts even got there, James hopped the fence to the old house in the forest to go save the Ralts. He took a few attacks but grabbed the Ralts and ran for home. When he got there, he let the Ralts sleep on his bed and begged his mother to help her as his mother worked at a Pokecenter. Ralts was taken to a center and looked over. She was pretty banged up. Apparently she had tried climbing a tree and fell off from high up as she had some fractures. She also became sick from Gastly's gaseous form. The next few weeks were spent with James sleeping on the floor while Ralts took his bed. He cared for her while she was unable to do so for herself.

One day, Ralts spoke to James outright, saying "Thank you" which surprised him, not thinking Pokemon could talk. When she was fully healed, Ralts left during the night. When James woke up due to the door being closed and saw this, he ran out searching for her. He caught a glimpse of her heading into the forest again so he ran after her. This time however, James was stopped by a couple of men who meant him harm. From the forest came a Shadow Sneak which shot up under one of the men, incapacitating him and the other ran away from the sight, followed by the Ralts rushing over to James with a handful of flowers.

"You got those...for me?" asked a startled James who responded by hugging Ralts. Ralts then asked for James to give her a name of her own. She would see James call the other kids by names and she wanted one for herself. James gave her the name of Shirona, his great grandmother's name. Shirona was delighted and stayed with James for the next while. James finally asked how Shirona came to be near the city since Ralts live further south near Hearthome City. Shirona says she hatched from an egg near that old house. James' mother said that a Staravia may have picked up the egg and brought it over. Shirona said she wasn't that long from hatching when she met James, only a few weeks. James was surprised at how she picked up the languages but she admitted she just spent the time reading through the phonics that were in the cupboard while living with James.

Upon having a Pokemon of his own, James and Shirona eventually set out on their adventure in Sinnoh. Over the course of their adventure, James had saved other Pokemon, a drowning Gibble who couldn't swim, an abandoned Eevee, a Starly whose wing was broken, and a Shinx who picked a fight with a group of Geodudes. He received a Chimchar from Prof. Rowan after he was impressed by James having a team of Pokemon that were not in pokeballs, having formed a very deep bond of friendship with them.

James raised those Pokemon like they were family. James did buy some pokeballs so that his Pokemon could rest in them instead of always walking. Shirona however, refused to be inside one, wanting to always be with James and he obliged. Through his journeys, his team became stronger and even more bonded together. With ease he took the eight badges of the leaders throughout the region, he encountered Team Galactic many times but simply breezed passed them. While he was in Victory road, nearing the end, he heard word of them being disbanded. While he utterly hated what Team Galactic was and did, he never expressly sought them out after being told by Looker to stand down on the case. Assured that an extremely capable trainer was on the job. James knew he meant Dawn, whom he'd met when she came to Eterna for Gardina's badge. Trusting Dawn he decided to stay out of it, like Looker suggested.

James may not always act serious, but when the going gets tough, he can get rough. James tends to shift emotions to the point of extreme when he does shift them at all. He hates being an angry person but has had to let loose a few times. While he was in Hearthome, about to take on Fantina, he heard of a group of Team Galactic grunts who stole Pokemon from trainers in the park were escaping to Veilstone. Outraged, he had Asuka track them as he chased them down. Not only did he thrash their Pokemon, he used explicit force on them, in the way of threatening to sick Garchomp on them and even himself angrily holding one of the guys by his collar and toss him against a wall giving verbal threats and even straight decking one of the smart-asses, to make them release the stolen Pokemon back to their trainers. With their arms twisted behind their backs, they gave back the stolen Pokemon and ran off. James, sick of himself from having gotten angry, went home to Eterna City and just crashed in his room for a week to cool off. The only other time he's ever gotten serious is when he was in Floaroma Town getting some flowers for his mother and for Fafnir. Despite Dawn having dealt with Mars, Team Galactic still tried to come back and take over the Valley Windworks. Cue James storming the location and moments later almost a dozen grunts flee the area, some with bruises, others without even their Pokemon. After buying the flowers, he went back home, gave his mom them as it was her birthday, and promptly proceeded to punish himself for getting angry again.

James and Shirona eventually reached the Elite Four's domain, the Pokemon League. It was a tough road ahead but Vasuman and Raijin beat back Aaron, Asuka and Skadi beat Bertha together, Flint fell to Fafnir's tidal waves, Shirona closed Lucien's book, and finally the team beat Cynthia after a fairly hard fight with Cynthia's team almost stomping James at every turn. While his team could match Cynthia's in power, Cynthia's skill was easily beating him down. Eventually James won thanks to Skadi's snow cloak ability saving her from being defeated many times and together they took down the final Pokemon in the Champion's roster. James was awarded a special pin which he gratefully took and, with the agreement of his team, gave it to Shirona. She wears it with pride. James then left without taking the title of Champion, explaining to Cynthia that he just wanted to explore other regions. He bid her farewell and left on his worldly journey, his "family" with him all the way. A special issue magazine came out in that following day with the front headline "Rookie's Lucky Break!" and a story detailing the lucky moment where Skadi's Snow Cloak lead James to victory against the Champion Cynthia.

After over 4 years of traveling and collecting badges, James found himself stepping off a boat in the Unova region's Castelia City, eager for a new adventure.

James has a special ability to heal his wounds. While this does not heal his stamina and only restores as much hp as leftovers, he has the uncanny ability that when pushed to the brink, his wounds tend to heal.

Fafnir, noticing his opponent flinched, took no time in executing another Dragon Claw to bring her down. The poison finally getting to him, he took a knee and before he fell to the ground, he was put back in his pokeball.

"Alright, That's enough Fafnir. I'm sorry about that... There was no need to get you poisoned... I should have come prepared with pecha berries for them to hold... Whatever. Effective tradeoff. Wasn't expecting a stall tank. Normally for bug gyms, I just let Asuka run havoc, but I made the mistake of using her right after Skadi was knocked out which put her in a bad mood... As long as I've lived with my family here, I still make mistakes..."

James went into a quick thought process, "If I throw out Vasuman...he'll throw out an easy counter. I have no doubt with his previous choices that he might have an Armaldo or Shuckle for the rock type to deal with fire and flying types and possibly even a Nincada or Wormdam for ground type to take care of neutral damages like electricity...Hmm... He did have that steel and bug though. He also didn't throw out a rock half type to take care of Skadi easily and elected for a slower steel type, curious. Let's take a chance here."

As James concluded his thoughts, he took out a Quick Ball and tossed it. Out of the yellow flash dropped an electric lion. It's body was wreathed in electricity as it let out it's usual howl.

"Raijin, charge up, buddy!"

"REEAAAOWW!!"

The Luxray became wreathed in electricity once again but instead of going away, it persisted and covered it's body, readying extra jolts for the next strike, it also raised his special defense against non-physical attacks.

Likewise, the final hit occurred and the Vespiquen went down quickly. Burgh was nodding, impressed by his opponent's skill as he recalled his fallen Pokemon.

"You managed to outlast her with a well-timed flinch. Good move on your part. You turned what would've been an even score into an exchange and that's pretty good, all things considered. I'm still buzzing with excitement to see what you have left in your arsenal, though."

Burgh watched as the Luxray entered the field of battle. He nodded understandingly.

"Holding your trump card for later, I take it. Then I guess I'll have to make my move." The Castelia Gym Leader tossed out a...rather square-looking Pokemon. It looked like a hermit crab with a square portion of rock as it's shell. It's claws were thick and seemed heavy and it's eyes were intensely staring at the Luxray with confidence.

"If you're gonna draw some power, then I guess I should as well. Crustle, use Shell Smash!"

The Crustle shook rapidly and seemed to buzz intensely, a layer of rock sliding off his back while he did so. He had more than enough defense to compensate for the losses in both stats and could easily gain some really intense power and speed. In fact, the Bug would even be faster than the Luxray was presently.

"I know you can knock him out easily, but we're determined to do some damage. Shirona, can I have the types?"

"That is a bug and rock if the giant layer of sediment on its back is anything to go on."

"I figured as much, but I just wanted reassurance. Neutral damage so we have a shot. But with that move, Crustle there must have a lot of defense to be able to confidentially use that skill. Raijin, this will be a tough fight! You may not even last 2 hits against him. but, Thunder Fang!"

The electric lion charged the Crustle in the hopes to sink its teeth into it.

However, Burgh was already calling his next move.

"Now let's do this. Earthquake!"

Suddenly, the Crustle brought up it's mighty claws and slammed them down, causing the room to shake once more. Not only was he faster and was able to beat the Luxray to the punch, he was also much stronger and was able to land the knock-out in one hit. Burgh remained chipper and polite as ever.

"It seems we are back to equal footing," Burgh said as he struck a pose.

Two versus two.

"I figured as much."

James brought the unconscious Luxray back.

"James, let me go in."

"I will not! It's hard enough to throw in the rest of my team... I grew up with you guys, it's like throwing my friends into battle."

"Well I'm going in."

"You are not."

James took out a pokeball and tossed it, out came an Infernape.

"With a shell like that, it likely has high defense, so let's go with something special, Flamethrower!"

Infernape blew flames out of it's mouth to engulf the target Crustle.

"Another easy knock-out..."

"James!"

"...I should have stayed retired after Kanto...I can't even take down a bug gym."

"You're just out of practice! You can't win every fight, no matter how strong you are."

"It's not the losing that hurts, I don't care if I win or lose...What matters is you guys. Having to watch you all fall...It's why I wanted to stop after Kanto..."

"Give it a rest! No giving up!"

"...."

When the flames finally dissipated, the Crustle was smoldering, smoke wisping off his hard exterior. His eyes were shut from pain and effort to hanging on. But there he was, still standing and hanging in there by a thread.

"That's it!" Burgh visibly clapped with joy, "Well done, dear Crustle. Way to show your toughness. Now, let's gain the upper hand! Earthquake, again!"

Out of anger, the large Stone Home Pokemon brought it's claws and smashed them down yet again. The rumbling returned, and the looming threat was no more, knocked out from the sheer power of the Infernape.

James would be down to his last Pokemon.

"I would be libel to agree with your dear companion, James," Burgh added to Shirona's commentary, "You're only down by a small margin. And everyone has that particular type specialty they struggle going against. Even Iris and Touko, the two on that screen over there...they've lost matches before to trainers and Pokemon who knew how to beat them. They've got a weakness to exploit. As do I. So don't be so downtrodden. Let's finish this off right!"

A determined hand clench was poised in front of the Castelia Gym Leader, inviting James to put forth one more effort against Burgh.

"James"

"....Nnn... Shirona! You're in!"

"Yes sir!"

Shirona steps up to the plate as Infernape returns to his ball.

"Magical Leaf!"

James wasn't even done saying the word when leaves of pure magic formed around Shirona and shot out at Crustle.

He was already hanging by a thread. The unavoidable Magic Leaf attack struck straight and true and dealt the finishing blow to Crustle. Burgh nodded once and recalled his Pokemon.

Last round. Last Pokemon for both of them. This was what the spirit of the fight was all about.

There was a greater intensity in the Castelia Gym Leader's voice as he pulled the final Pokemon from his belt and unleashed it, "Escavalier, let's finish this!"

The ball popped open and Shirona's final challenge loomed in front of her. They would notice the scarlet red plume of horsehair crest on the top of her head, which complemented the knightly look that also consisted of the visor, the steely clad armor, and the two lances for arms. Her eyes gleamed with intent for battle and bravery for whatever the Gardevoir would wish to throw at her.

"This is what everything has been building to!" Burgh cried, "Show me what you've got, dearie!"

"....Shirona."

"Quiet. I can take it."

"Right, thunderbolt"

Shirona raised her hand to the sky causing a flash of thunder to strike Escavalier.

"Let's hope this works..."

"Win or lose, James. It's the experience."

The bolt landed with a resounding crash! and a crackle emitting through the air in it's accompaniment. And when the dust settled, another encouraging sign would be waiting for them. Burgh's Pokemon was giving off a few electric sparks from her body, letting them know that Paralysis had set in.

"Nice move," Burgh complemented, "But this is where it all ends. Escavalier, Iron Head!"

The Cavalry Pokemon shot forward like a rocket, but suddenly seized up, rendering her immobile. The Paralysis was doing it's job, but it would need to keep her at bay for one more turn if they didn't want to risk losing the match.

"Ngh, that actually worked in our favour? Give her another one, Shirona!"

Another strike landing. The Escavalier shook slightly as another bolt struck it. It couldn't take another hit like that.

This was it. It had to work. Burgh would have to do it right here.

"One more effort! Escavalier, one more Iron Head! Give 'em everything you've got!"

The Escavalier charged forward once more. The hindering effect of Paralysis wouldn't take effect this time as she shrugged off everything she could to make one final charge.

Contact was made.

The Iron Head would smash right into the Gardevoir, hitting her hard and hitting her violently. But would it be enough to cause the knockout?

Shirona took the full force of the hit and even fell down.

"Shirona!!"

As James took a few steps forward, full on ready to rush in there, Shirona got back up.

"S-Shirona! Y-You're ok?"

"Say it."

"W-Wha!?"

"Say it. The command."

"Oh! R-Right! Thunderbolt! Finish this!"

With a final hurrah, Shirona lets loose yet another thunderbolt. While it does the same damage as the previous two, even Burgh could feel the emotion packed into this final strike. With that strike, Shirona stumbled back a bit to lean on James.

"I got ya, sis."

"Hehe."

And the final energy in her attack, her heart and pride and every bit of soul she had sapped the rest of her strength to deal the final blow. The Escavalier was knocked backwards from the blow and fell on the ground. She lay still.

The battle was over. James was the victor.

"Bravo!" Burgh shouted enthusiastically as he recalled his final Pokemon and stepped forward, "I think you've not only proved your own mettle to me, you've proved your mettle to your team and, most importantly, yourself. I said I wouldn't be taking it easy on you and I didn't hold anything back. You've beaten me at my best. This region also carries some rumor to be more difficult than most of the other region Gym Leaders, so you can also say you've beaten the best Bug-Type specialist in the circuit. But...don't tell the other bug-specialists I said that. I've got to remain impartial, after all."

He let a coy smile as he extended a hand to shake. When James would shake and pull back, he would feel something in his hand, transferred there through the handshake. When he'd look at it, he'd see the sparkling Gym Badge he'd earned resting there:

"Good luck with the rest of the gym leaders! You've got a nice team and a better spread, so they shouldn't give you too much hassle...I hope." He gave a quick wink to James and Shirona before whirling around with a flourish and walking back to his side of the room.

"Heh, thanks, Burgh. To be fair, this could have went better, but Shirona and the team pulled through. This is their win, not mine."

"We should....really get to a poke center..."

"Right. After that, I'm getting everybody those Castelia Cones, and Skadi her pretzels."

"A-Alright."

James put away the badge in the special case he bought previously. Next was that gym in Striaton City.

"So, what can you tell me about the gym in Striaton?"

"The Striaton Gym?" Burgh looked quite puzzled as he turned around, "I can tell you it's been out of commission for a few years now. Cilan, Chili, and Cress all retired and are now doing their own thing. Most people start in Aspertia City now. It's run by Cheren."

Something hit him just then and a curious smile crossed his face, "This is your first Gym Challenge in this region, isn't it?"

"It is. The brochure I have is old, a couple years. Shirona here has knowledge of this region's pokemon, which is why I asked her a lot about types and moves. But yes, you were my first gym in Unova. I've heard some neat things about this place in the other regions and wanted to save it for last. So the Striaton gym is out... SO uh...Where is Aspertia then? I don't even have a map of this place"

James fed Shirona a couple sitrus berries he had with him and she perked up a bit, enough to stand on her own.

"I told you we should have bought one from the tourist guy on the boat here"

"Yeah, you did. And like always, you're right"

"My kind can read the future to a degree, it is kind of hard to be wrong"

"Maan, that's no fair, sis. I'm just a human! No cheating! Hahaha~ Anyway, what do you got on this Cheren? I feel like I've heard the name before."

"He went against Team Plasma some time ago with Emiko. Didn't go as far as she did though. I guess he became a gym leader after that."

"Oh...So I'm fighting somebody who's taken a syndicate head-on...It'll be like the time Dawn tried to take us down... Hooboy he sounds tough."

Burgh pointed towards the southwest, "Aspertia City is that way. You can either take the ferry to Virbank City or you can take the sewer path through the cave and into the mountains if you feel so inclined. Either way, you may as well stop by and fight Roxie. She's another Gym Leader you'll want to take on that won't be listed in that outdated brochure. And if you're looking to get a new one, I'm sure Cheren's got plenty of them."

Burgh smiled as he nodded in agreement to Shirona's recollection about Cheren, "Indeed. But he's less focused on the actual competition nowadays. He's become a teacher as well as a Gym Leader. He actually enjoys training schoolkids to become Pokemon Trainers. It's why most people start with him. And if they can't beat him, they can definitely learn a lot from him."

"So Roxie and Cheren..."

"We are not going into another sewer!"

"Another? Oh, well who's fault was it that they fell in a manhole?"

"T-That's beside the point!"

"So it's either a sewer or a ferry... No above land routes here in Unova? Yeesh..."

James made sure his pokeballs were secured, but also looked at them with a bit of sadness.

"I'm sorry guys...I didn't mean to have you all hurt."

"Well out of all of them, Fafnir enjoyed it the most."

"Faf just likes a good fight, so of course he did. Well, thanks Burgh. So...Virbank, is that neighbouring Aspertia?"

Burgh nodded, "There's a singular path in between the two cities. And unless you want to travel through the wild, it's really the only way in and out of Aspertia. But I wish you good luck and safe travels as you fight the rest of the Gym Leaders! Who knows...maybe we'll fight again someday and I can bring it even harder than this time. So...until then..."

Burgh twirled around on his toes and faced the spectacular fight in front of them.
