James is an 18 year old Pokemon trainer born and raised in Eterna City. Forever by his side is a special Pokemon, Shirona. Shirona is a shiny Gardevoir as she is blue rather than the average green. The two met when James was taking a stroll through the forest, against his mother's warnings when he was 13, thinking he could handle it by now. He saw a small blue Ralts, badly hurt already being attacked by some Gastly's. Not stopping to wonder how the Ralts even got there, James hopped the fence to the old house in the forest to go save the Ralts. He took a few attacks but grabbed the Ralts and ran for home. When he got there, he let the Ralts sleep on his bed and begged his mother to help her as his mother worked at a Pokecenter. Ralts was taken to a center and looked over. She was pretty banged up. Apparently she had tried climbing a tree and fell off from high up as she had some fractures. She also became sick from Gastly's gaseous form. The next few weeks were spent with James sleeping on the floor while Ralts took his bed. He cared for her while she was unable to do so for herself.

One day, Ralts spoke to James outright, saying "Thank you" which surprised him, not thinking Pokemon could talk. When she was fully healed, Ralts left during the night. When James woke up due to the door being closed and saw this, he ran out searching for her. He caught a glimpse of her heading into the forest again so he ran after her. This time however, James was stopped by a couple of men who meant him harm. From the forest came a Shadow Sneak which shot up under one of the men, incapacitating him and the other ran away from the sight, followed by the Ralts rushing over to James with a handful of flowers.

"You got those...for me?" asked a startled James who responded by hugging Ralts. Ralts then asked for James to give her a name of her own. She would see James call the other kids by names and she wanted one for herself. James gave her the name of Shirona, his great grandmother's name. Shirona was delighted and stayed with James for the next while. James finally asked how Shirona came to be near the city since Ralts live further south near Hearthome City. Shirona says she hatched from an egg near that old house. James' mother said that a Staravia may have picked up the egg and brought it over. Shirona said she wasn't that long from hatching when she met James, only a few weeks. James was surprised at how she picked up the languages but she admitted she just spent the time reading through the phonics that were in the cupboard while living with James.

Upon having a Pokemon of his own, James and Shirona eventually set out on their adventure in Sinnoh. Over the course of their adventure, James had saved other Pokemon, a drowning Gibble who couldn't swim, an abandoned Eevee, a Starly whose wing was broken, and a Shinx who picked a fight with a group of Geodudes. He received a Chimchar from Prof. Rowan after he was impressed by James having a team of Pokemon that were not in pokeballs, having formed a very deep bond of friendship with them.

James raised those Pokemon like they were family. James did buy some pokeballs so that his Pokemon could rest in them instead of always walking. Shirona however, refused to be inside one, wanting to always be with James and he obliged. Through his journeys, his team became stronger and even more bonded together. With ease he took the eight badges of the leaders throughout the region, he encountered Team Galactic many times but simply breezed passed them. While he was in Victory road, nearing the end, he heard word of them being disbanded. While he utterly hated what Team Galactic was and did, he never expressly sought them out after being told by Looker to stand down on the case. Assured that an extremely capable trainer was on the job. James knew he meant Dawn, whom he'd met when she came to Eterna for Gardina's badge. Trusting Dawn he decided to stay out of it, like Looker suggested.

James may not always act serious, but when the going gets tough, he can get rough. James tends to shift emotions to the point of extreme when he does shift them at all. He hates being an angry person but has had to let loose a few times. While he was in Hearthome, about to take on Fantina, he heard of a group of Team Galactic grunts who stole Pokemon from trainers in the park were escaping to Veilstone. Outraged, he had Asuka track them as he chased them down. Not only did he thrash their Pokemon, he used explicit force on them, in the way of threatening to sick Garchomp on them and even himself angrily holding one of the guys by his collar and toss him against a wall giving verbal threats and even straight decking one of the smart-asses, to make them release the stolen Pokemon back to their trainers. With their arms twisted behind their backs, they gave back the stolen Pokemon and ran off. James, sick of himself from having gotten angry, went home to Eterna City and just crashed in his room for a week to cool off. The only other time he's ever gotten serious is when he was in Floaroma Town getting some flowers for his mother and for Fafnir. Despite Dawn having dealt with Mars, Team Galactic still tried to come back and take over the Valley Windworks. Cue James storming the location and moments later almost a dozen grunts flee the area, some with bruises, others without even their Pokemon. After buying the flowers, he went back home, gave his mom them as it was her birthday, and promptly proceeded to punish himself for getting angry again.

James and Shirona eventually reached the Elite Four's domain, the Pokemon League. It was a tough road ahead but Vasuman and Raijin beat back Aaron, Asuka and Skadi beat Bertha together, Flint fell to Fafnir's tidal waves, Shirona closed Lucien's book, and finally the team beat Cynthia after a fairly hard fight with Cynthia's team almost stomping James at every turn. While his team could match Cynthia's in power, Cynthia's skill was easily beating him down. Eventually James won thanks to Skadi's snow cloak ability saving her from being defeated many times and together they took down the final Pokemon in the Champion's roster. James was awarded a special pin which he gratefully took and, with the agreement of his team, gave it to Shirona. She wears it with pride. James then left without taking the title of Champion, explaining to Cynthia that he just wanted to explore other regions. He bid her farewell and left on his worldly journey, his "family" with him all the way. A special issue magazine came out in that following day with the front headline "Rookie's Lucky Break!" and a story detailing the lucky moment where Skadi's Snow Cloak lead James to victory against the Champion Cynthia.

After over 4 years of traveling and collecting badges, James found himself stepping off a boat in the Unova region's Castelia City, eager for a new adventure.

James has a special ability to heal his wounds. While this does not heal his stamina and only restores as much hp as leftovers, he has the uncanny ability that when pushed to the brink, his wounds tend to heal.

The Durant lowered it's head and took the hit like a champ, sliding on it's hind legs a bit by the force of the Frost Breath. But when all was settled, his gaze rested back on Glaceon, ready for more action.

"Alright Durant. You know what time it is!"

The Durant reached back to something he was holding, some kind of berry, it looked like. The berry was almost tan-colored and had some strange bulbous lumps on the skin. In a way, it almost looked like a cactus of some sort, but without all the spines that made them rather painful. The Durant took this berry and chomped it down with it's massive steel pincers.

"There we go!" Burgh pumped his fist as he elegantly twirled, Now, hit the Glaceon with Iron Head!"

The Durant suddenly burst forward in a near-blurring speed as it maintained trajectory and attempted a headbutt. If connected, they ran another risk of Glaceon flinching from the pain...that is, if the powered-up Iron Head wouldn't be enough to knock her out.

Skadi took the hit and was knocked backwards. James quickly caught her and set her back down. Skadi was in no condition to attack again, but the determination in her eyes was obvious that she wasn't going to back down.

"Skadi....Alright. We'll play it your way. Skadi, just one more turn!"

"Wee"

It was obvious that the ice fox wasn't going to be able to take another hit like that, or anything. Shirona carried a worried expression while James didn't, James' expression was a big smile as he looked at Skadi, the timid little girl he found that day on the street. He was proud that she's grown so much so to not back down even during a hopeless situation.

"That's my girl~" thought James.

Burgh was on the offensive, carrying the momentum on his side. He had some catching up to do and it would start right here. It had to.

"One more turn!" Burgh called out reassuringly to Durant, "One more Iron Head!"

Shaking off the hail that was pelting them, the Durant pressed forward with the higher accuracy move. He would have to land this hit to knock her out. Otherwise, he risked the same.

And as if by a miracle, Skadi manages to dodge by jumping to the left. Before James even gets to call out a move, a beam of solid ice shot from Skadi's mouth aimed at the Durant in front of her.

"Ice Beam, nice choice, Skadi!"

"You can do this!"

"What?!"

The shock registered on his face as the Glaceon mustered up the energy to narrowly evade the Iron Head and retaliate with a savage Ice Beam of her own. The Durant was blasted backwards and was knocked unconscious in two hits, despite the type advantage it had over Ice-Types.

Six to four... he thought as he watched the cloudy skies above them dissipate. The Hail had gone away. The opportunity was ripe. If he wanted to negate the deficit and eliminate the wear and tear tactic James and his Glaceon had taken to, he'd have to do something risky again. But that was just part of the fun.

The thoughtful frown was replaced by that award-winning smile once more and his hand slipped to his belt, pulling out Pokemon number three. "Very impressive, indeed. You've got a lot of prowess with your Glaceon, but will you expect this? Leavanny, let's do this!"

The infamous Pokemon Burgh was known to wield against foes graced the battlefield with her presence. Her leaf-coated exoskeleton retained as much elegance as Burgh carried, as did her antennae, her legs, and her movement. She took up a praying mantis-like stance in front of Skadi. Her eyes seemed focused.

"Leaf Blade! Quick!" he called for the attack the moment her stance was taken.

And her strike forward was rapid and quickly timed. There were a number of factors behind this decision. Sure, she was at a type-disadvantage, as Leaf Blade wouldn't do enough on it's own. But if she could land her attack at that sweep spot, it would do just enough to finish off the Eevelution.

"Dangit, I was hoping he'd hold off on that one! Even though Ice is good against it, Skadi is little match for that thing right now!"

As the hail recedes, so does Skadi's cover. And with a wide open target, that leaf blade strikes home and sent Skadi backwards again. James, once more caught her. She was out cold, no pun intended.

"Tch. Alright. You did well, girl~ Back you go."

James put Skadi back in her premier ball and tossed it to Shirona who caught it and set it aside. James took out a fast ball this time.
The orange ball was hurtled into the playing field.

"Alright. Asuka! Your time to shine! Take to the skies and charge down your opponent! BRAVE BIRD!"

Out of the ball shot a pristine Staraptor who didn't even take the time to land and just shot straight at Leavanny, putting all it's power into this shot as the wind could be visibly seen splicing around it's form. Asuka knew she'd be hurting bad if this hits but she didn't care. She was willing to smash right into a wall if it meant avenging Skadi.

"SKREEEE!!!"

"Ah...a Flying-Type," Burgh hummed as the Staraptor graced the field wrought with fury, "Hello my old nemesis."

The Brave Bird was a vicious and powerful strike that would most certainly kill any Bug-Type Pokemon that entered the field of battle. But there was a fortunate decision that Burgh had made with this particular item she had Leavanny carry. The command didn't even need to be issued. The Leavanny's gaze on the frightening bird would be enough to pop that Coba Berry into her mouth. When the blow came, she still winced heavily and took a ton of damage. But she had enough in the tank to deliver an X-Scissor at the same time Brave Bird struck. Leavanny had been through many a Flying-Type barrage and knew the circumstances. She knew X-Scissor was the best option since it would be powered up by her last ditch effort.

When the two separated, Burgh was still surprised to find Leavanny not knocked out. She was on one knee and struggling to stand. Her knees were shaking and her eyes were squeezed shut, her entire concentration set on staying awake and not falling over unconscious. Burgh's jaw hit the floor.

"Incredible! A brilliant effort, Leavanny! Here, let's get you out of this fray-"

But she put a hand behind her, telling him that wouldn't be necessary.

"Are you sure? You're in bad shape. I don't want you to seriously get hurt."

But Leavanny gave him a look, one that begged him to trust her. Maybe she saw something that he didn't.

"Alright then. I'm trusting you."

The Leavanny fell to one knee, glancing up at the Staraptor flying above her through a squinted eye.

"Oh boy.....She's in one of her moods again..."

"Skreee!"

The staraptor wasn't much better in terms of damage. The recoil from slamming head-first into Leavanny took out a toll on her, adding on that X-Scissor to that, even at a resist, She couldn't take much more. And being the reckless bird she is, she goes for another dive, eager to take Leavanny with her.

"W-Wha!? Another one!? Don't do that Asuka! You won't be able to take that recoil!"

The bird didn't stop and continued its death charge against the Leavanny.

In terms of overkill, there was no better representation than a Flying-Type using their strongest move against a creature that was incredibly lucky to take the first strike.

The Brave Bird collided against a barely standing Leavanny that no longer held the power of the Coba Berry as it certainly took her out of this fight. Burgh had the PokeBall ready to return her the moment the move struck. He sighed as he thanked Leavanny for her bravery and her willingness to tough it out for the sake of this battle.

Her tactic would not go in vain.

The overwhelming effect of Brave Bird against a Leavanny coupled with the injured state she was already in from the first one would cause her to be effectively knocked out. She was lucky she took as little damage as she did from the first strike. If Burgh's Leavanny hadn't been holding that Coba Berry, it would be the Staraptor hanging on by a thread. But to double down in that situation was detrimental to her. And now they had one less advantage against Burgh and his remaining team.

Four of James's Pokemon to Burgh's three.

"Unfortunate that you lacked control over your Pokemon in that instance," he commented, shaking his head, "That Staraptor would've been your ace in the hole. There's not much I can do about Flying-Types."

Another PokeBall yanked from the belt, this time revealing an all too imposing foe. The honeycomb-shaped abdomen was telling enough, but the way she hovered, the imposing height she carried, the confident stare that commanded and radiated authority. Vespiqueen was not one to be trifled with.

"Here's where I hopefully take the upper hand," Burgh said confidently, waiting to see what James pulled out next.

James sighs and takes Asuka back into her ball.

"I should have figured tossing her in would be a bad idea. She's always been protective of Skadi. But it's funny how you think Asuka was my ace in the hole against you. Sure, she was one of my stronger pokemon in this situation, but I do have a few others who could shake up your bugs. And a Vespiquen! Finally we're in territory that I know! The obvious choice is Vasuman, but I'll save him and throw out Fafnir."

James preemptively puts in earplugs and Shirona covers her ears. He then takes out a dusk ball and tosses it into the arena. The ball opens and from the dark mist drops a six foot tall monster who, while he takes damage from the spikes, pays them no heed and just gives an earsplitting roar.

"And this is why I have earplugs. Fafnir, Dragon Breath!"

The Garchomp reared its head back and shot it forward, breathing out a powerful gust with a paralyzing attribute from the power.

"I know Vespi pretty well. Not much she can do to handle this situation, though your previous did take a brave bird and live so I'm eager to see how you deal against Fafnir.

Burgh smiled and nodded patiently.

"Preservation of your assets is key to success. Like I've said before, you've already got the upper hand and I'll need a quick turnaround to bring this back into my favor. But I've got all the momentum right now. And unfortunately for you, so does my dear Vespiquen!"

The Vespiquen crossed her arms and took the hit like a champ. There was less power behind that move than typical Dragon-Type moves, so she could tank it with less worry of an after-effect. Also fortunate...the paralysis didn't set in yet.

"Vespiquen, Defend Order!"

The iconic Vespiquen move was in full swing as a swarm of her underlings hovered in front of her, increasing her durability. Burgh flared his brow dramatically as if to demonstrate his curiosity.

"Interesting tactic to try and go for the Paralysis, though. I'm not sure what good it would do for you here. Maybe to gain a little mobility advantage on Vespiquen or maybe you're hoping luck is on your side and you'll halt some forward progress out of me. But I'm ready for your next move."

"None of that actually. I'm aware of Vespi's moves. The Dragon Breath was just a chance shot. The damage was what was important, but the paralyze would have been nice as it might have negated some moves and made this fight easier. Fafnir, Sword's Dance!"

Fafnir let out another roar. It would seem as if a mysterious energy floated around him now.

"I know it's going to take a lot out of Vespi there to take him down, status or no status. Let's just see if she can handle it."

The Castelia Gym Leader didn't seem to be perturbed by the confidence James carried with him. He glanced at the offensively charged Garchomp in front of him and nodded.

"I see that could be a problem...hmm...let's hit it with Toxic!"

The Vespiquen's stinger suddenly charged forward as a projectile from one of the hexagon-shaped holes in her posterior and "bee"lined straight for the Garchomp, embedding itself in the Garchomp's finger. It would sting a little upon contact, but the pain would come later, as people who were aware of Toxic probably knew.

"I think among others on my team, this one is especially set up to handle it."

"I figured you'd have toxic. While it is a pain, it'll take a while before it gets bad. Fafnir! Dragon claw!"

The Garchomp's claws seemed to glow as it shot forward and swiped at Vespi with them.

"Essentially we are back to square one since the attack buff has effectively neutralized your defense buff. Even without the buff, this will still hurt."

"Fafnir! Just hold out!"

The bipedal dragon responded with nod and an exhalation through its nose.

The Dragon Claw swiped and scratched the Vespiquen across the abdomen. Another good hit like that and she'd be through. But Burgh nodded understandingly at James's guess.

"That's very true. But how long do you have before it gives out? Vespiquen, Roost!"

The Vespiquen landed on the ground and started garnering her own health back. Deep breath after deep breath, the Vespiquen had just about recovered from the damage of that previous hit and even a little bit from the Dragon Breath preceding it. Burgh smiled at James.

"Your move then."

The Toxic continued to coarse through the Garchomp's veins.

"Heh, roosting, huh? Fine. Fafnir! Earthquake!"

Fafnir gave a roar and stomped the ground once, causing it to shake uncontrollably for some time, the whole while giving a piercing glare at Vespiquen. Shirona forced herself to levitate to avoid being hurt as she was a little close to the arena.

Burgh frowned at the move called, the ground beneath them shaking as the Vespiquen took the blow.

"I guess you still have a little to learn," Burgh commented as he pointed at his Pokemon out on the field. That move didn't seem to phase her too much as she appeared to take it a lot better than she took the Dragon Claw.

"Roost again!"

The Vespiquen stooped down and recovered more health, now bringing her back to full strength. Meanwhile, Burgh retained that award-winning sparkle in his eyes as he spoke.

"You fell for the bait, like a worm on the hook. Now we shall make the playing field a bit more even."

"To be fair, it's been a while since I've had to think of bug pokemon. So I forgot their resistances. Mistakes or not, we can still pull this out, Swords Dance!"

Burgh chuckled, "We can play this game, too. Defend Order!"

Another swarm of Bugs came out of the woodwork, adding more capable defense to counter the swelling offense. The Toxic was close to completing it's course. If Vespiquen could outlast the Garchomp for one more turn, he would've made things even. If not, well...there'd be a trade at least.

"Dragon Claw! Let's make this an eye for an eye!"

If this one can flinch the target, then Fafnir can bring down Vespi at the cost of himself. The rock on Fafnir's wrist glowed as he struck Vespi with his claws again, his eyes full of flame as the battle monger becomes increasingly excited despite the pain he should be in.

"You got this, Fafnir!" Shirona cheered from the sidelines.
