Description

Director of the SIB; Mordecai Tavi

Image“Can’t think of a reason why you would ever want a desk job.”

“It’s not like I’m getting much of a choice, if it’s all the same.”

“CO pushing the matter?”

“Just like you would have, sir.”

Mordecai gave a shake of his head and a little laugh. “You haven’t called me sir for three years. Sudden change of heart now that you don’t need to?”

“You might say that.”

“What are you trying to get out of this?” The woman in front of him was only a scant five years younger than he was and was peering down at her own knees. Of course, he knew her a bit better than to think her shy – she was hiding the bruising on her face. “Really, I can’t just accept a transfer for the sake of it. You can go a lot further on the track you’re on now.”

“My Commanding Officer is recommending it, Mordecai.”

“You never used to listen to your Commanding Officer.”

“Years change a person.”

“Are you going to listen to me now?”

“Only if I’m a part of the SIB.” A feeble attempt at a joke now that things were driving into serious territory.

“Romanae, I can’t have you undermining my authority if you’re on one of my teams.”

“Like I said, years change a person, Mordecai,” Captain Retna had lifted her head by this point and levelled the man sitting opposite her with an easy expression. “Put me on probation and if I’m not doing a good enough job, I’ll leave the service entirely.”

“Ro... I don’t want you to leave. I’ve no doubt that you’ll be one of my strongest agents, but this isn’t a warzone. This is a city. You aren’t allowed to go on gut instinct as much as you were before, do you understand me? We gather evidence and retaliate only when it is necessary. Not when we need someone to die. We don’t work like that.”

“I understand.”

“Then you start next Monday. I want you in for medical exams and psych tests tomorrow morning at oh-seven-hundred, and I do not want you on the firing range for your firearm review until both of those tests have come back in a positive manner. Go get changed out of your fatigues, for any sake.”

“What, you don’t like being reminded of the good old warzone?”

“Not so much that, but you just came off a trans-ocean flight and no man or woman smells good after that. Out. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

With a formal salute unbecoming of the smile on the young woman’s face, Romanae bowed her way out of the room and left Mordecai Tavi, Director of the SIB approaching his one year anniversary of the post, to mull over his decision.

“I just know I’m going to regret this, one way or another,” the man muttered to himself before he too stood from his desk and left; he had a bed to get back to, and coming out to the SIB offices at 2 AM when he wasn’t even on shift was going to throw his sleeping schedule to shit.

So begins...

Through the doorway came two humans, a man and a woman. The man stood a good six or seven inches above the woman but, despite his clothing being somewhat formal and hers casual, she moved and talked as if she were the one in charge.

"I sincerely hope they have a functioning coffee machine," the taller of the two stated. "For my sake as well as yours."

"Don't be ridiculous, you don't drink coffee, Mordecai," the woman retorted as they wandered over to the bar.

"I certainly don't, but you do and therein lies the fear of being butchered if your caffeine addiction is not sated, Rory."

Said woman merely shook her head and gave an unsmiling snort. "You didn't joke like this last year."

"If I recall, neither did you."

"Shut up..."

The pair sat at the bar together, one sitting with a hand absently tapping on the counter whilst the other came up with a semi-interested look.

"What was that about telling me to shut up? I'm your boss, remember?"

"My apologies, Director Tavi!" the woman simpered with a falsetto. "Shut up, sir."

"Well, it's more respect than I got six years ago. And I didn't get any respect eight years ago, so I should count this as a victory, right?"

"That you should. Why are we here? Other than for coffee?"

"Forgive me for wanting to have a social chat outwith the office, madam."

"Oh God. Mordecai. You gossip-whore."

"What? It's none of my business if the rumours are true."

"Which they're not."

"Not what Edan said."

"You're shitting me. He told me that we were going to keep this between us!"

Mordecai smiled pleasantly. "That's what he said when I told him you'd explained the entire situation to me."

At Romanae's most unpleasant look, Mordecai rapped his hand on the bar and patiently glanced over at whomever happened to be behind the bar.

"Oh, please, Mordecai, don't you dare think you can distract me with coffee now. Weren't you the one who spent forty minutes lecturing the entire office about how personal matters were private and no business of anyone else's unless it was expressed by the person or persons in question?"

"Perhaps."

"Perhaps my arse, Tavi. I'm pissed off with you now. I'm going to sulk and complain and make my boys hate me for a while. I'll tell them to blame you."

"I know a way to fix it all, though..."

Romanae gave a frankly disbelieving look towards her superior, who merely grinned in return. "I'm beginning to wonder if your flighty assistant gave you some form of drug, Mordecai..."

"What? She's not flighty. She's unique."

"She's an idiot."

"Well, we can't all be hardy whatever-you-ares, Rory," the man pointed out as he ordered a cup of white tea and one of black coffee. "Regardless, this is supposed to be social time. I'm not discussing my assistant nor your work in this bar."

"You would be idiot to do so, wouldn't you?" Romanae commented with a shrug.

"Truthfully, yes. Are you going to tell me about this clandestine relationship or not?" the Director asked as he idly considered those in the bar. "No one here works for the SIB, it's not like they're going to gossip about you."

"When I've got my coffee."

At his age, Mordecai was really hoping that he'd have been working at a desk, a quiet desk, in an equally silent office. Of course, this was not quite the case - he did work at a desk, but both it and his office were rowdy. What with Daniel firing guns in his basement forensics lab and Iante often playing music to brighten up the quiet autopsy lab next door to Daniel, there was always some form of noise somewhere in the building.

Hence why Mordecai tried to escape the noise and head out to the bar for a coffee every now and then. However, today he'd made the mistake of heading out as Romanae came off shift, and now he had a grouchy, irritated redhead walking half-asleep beside him.

"You should make sure the coffee machine in the office works better," said redhead groused as the pair crossed the threshold into the bar. "Then we wouldn't have to risk death every time we want a cup of caffeine."

"The coffee machine works perfectly fine," the older man stated with a roll of his eyes. "You're just terribly irritated after a thirty-eight hour shift - which, by the way, you did not need to do. You were offered a damn respite!"

Mordecai had by this point approached the bar and was in the process of fighting with the touch screen ordering system in an attempt to secure the purchase of a black coffee and sugary tea.

"'Cai, it's not like we're - good shit, what the hell is with this place."

The Director of the SIB turned his head to look over at his employee/friend and then followed her line of sight.

"Who sleeps in a bar?" the woman reiterated. "Eurgh..."

"Look, if you irritate someone to the point of them shooting you, I'm not protecting you." Mordecai was looking at the redhead with some form of amusement.

"Whyever not, 'Cai, I'm your best agent."

"Edan is my best agent. And it's not that I won't, it's that I can't. I've no weapon. I don't get to carry weapons."

"You're the damn Director of the SIB..."

"Go make nice."

"Fine." Romanae haughtily strode away from Mordecai, who was just now receiving their order of tea and coffee, and went towards the taller male. "I'm ever so apologetic for disturbing your ridiculous bar sleep," Retna stated, voice dry and caustic. "If I wore a skirt, I would bloody well curtsy in apology."

"Of course he sent me. He's my bloody boss, he could make life very difficult... Well, he couldn't, but the point is that he could reduce my bonus and put me on all of the boring cases, and then I'd have a team full of whining men to contend with now, wouldn't I?"

The redhead shook her head at the offer of a drink. "I just came off duty and he promised me coffee already," she stated, jerking a thumb over her shoulder towards Mordecai, who was indeed wandering over with two cups in his hands.

"Are you still irritating the man, Retna, or are you being polite."

"Sod off, sir. Give me my damn coffee."

Mordecai Tavi snorted, eyes resting on Romanae's unimpressed expression as she took her coffee from his hand. "She's not a kid, though she's younger than I am..." Mordecai stated, hoping to appease the irritated agent.

"That's Special Agent Romanae Retna, thank you very much!"

"Special Investigations Branch of the Wing City Police Department," Mordecai explained, going ahead and taking a seat at Brett's table and pointing Romanae into a chair.

"I'm not a child," Romanae insisted. "Good grief, this is black coffee."

"You like black coffee."

"Yes, but this doesn't taste like the mud that comes out of the coffee machine at the office!"

"It's my name, interesting or not," Romanae huffed into her cup.

"She's just come off a thirty-eight hour shift..." Mordecai hummed. "And you believe the coffee tastes like mud, don't you, Rory?"

"Mmh, it's fact."

"Either way, she's grouchy as hell when she's not full of caffeine, and I think that poor Benjamin had the worst of it when he asked if she wanted a lift home."

"I politely declined."

"You threatened to shoot him if he ever insinuated that he was more of a man than you are ever again. Which made no sense."

"I'm tired."

Mordecai and Romanae both glanced at one another, an imperceptible expression crossing the latter's face. "You don't know what the SIB means, do you?" Romanae asked, head tilted slightly to the left in a move reminiscent of her twin.

"Special Investigations," Mordecai repeated. "We deal only with crimes that have been committed by or against police or military personnel."

"Unless you're about to admit to a crime, in which case I have to arrest you. S'my job."

Mordecai Tavi lifted a hand and pointed at Romanae. "Does that face say 'trained for combat'?"

"It kinda does, y'know, what with the scarring and so on..."

"Yeah, but that could just be you being deformed."

"It's not... Does that face say 'ex-army officer'?" Ro countered, gesturing towards Mordecai. "I try not to look too much. Disgusting with your combed hair and fancy suits."

It wouldn't be difficult to tell the pair were joking over their cups.

Mordecai Tavi shrugged his shoulders. "If I'm honest, which I usually am, I wouldn't think twice about disallowing magic onto the field. I'm all for equal opportunities and so on, but I've heard the horror stories as much as the next man has. I don't want something I can't control in a team full of strong-willed soldiers, and magic seems to be pretty damn hard to control at the best of times."

Of course, the tone of voice Mordecai used was in no way disparaging or disgusted. He sounded as amicable and tired as he had since the pair started talking.

Mordecai Tavi nodded. "I'm sure there are other applications for such talents, but on the battlefield with humans unlike yourself whose lives depend on the belief that their team mates will always be watching their back... I don't believe it's anyone's place to take the lives of many just so they can play soldier." Once again, there was a mild pause.

"Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Aerilyn."

Shift changes generally happen at 2300, 0300, 0800, 1100, 0300 and 2000. So, at 0900, things are just settling into routine after the latest twelve-hour shift-workers have turned up. Mordecai Tavi, Director of the SIB and former soldier... He doesn't have shifts. His job is ten hours, every day, 0800 to 1800 - and that doesn't include the days he's called in when an agent is killed or injured, or when there's red tape blocking an investigation.

So it should be no surprise that Mordecai Tavi, Director of the Special Investigations Branch, was walking through the bullpen that housed one of his best teams - Tom and Benji were sat beside one another at Tom's desk (thank God they'd stopped arguing long enough to work together), and James was half-asleep at his own desk (never could put down a case - Mordecai thinks he's been there a lot earlier than the start of his shift). Romanae Retna and Edan Cephas were nowhere to be seen. He assumed that they were downstairs, seeing to whatever forensic evidence needed to be tested.

"Anything new on the Sawney investigation, Isaacs?"

The agent jerked upright in his chair and blinked silently at the Director.

"Uh." He took a moment to stare blankly at his screen. "Ro went to see Jane for information on the weapon and the DNA samples, and Edan is downstairs checking on Iante."

9 AM. It was a time of routine. He shouldn't have been surprised.

Anne raised her eyes over the top of her wire-rimmed glasses in order to peer at the man at her desk. Anne had been with the SIB as a receptionist since its conception - and that was quite a few years. She looked from the man's face - Stanton Ryde - to her computer screen.

"Director Tavi has no scheduled appointment with a Mister Stanton Ryde," Anne informed the other softly. "Would you prefer to make an appointment, or would you like me to try my luck in phoning him up and asking him to take time away from doing his job in order to satiate ridiculous checks?"

And, as many who had known Anne for as long as they had been at the SIB, Anne had opinions. Many, many opinions.

Anne's expression spoke of little interest and even less care for the man's temperament or words. "I've been here longer than they've been calling it the SIB," she pointed out slowly, calmly. Her voice was gentle, but certain. "And they only started calling it the SIB with the new millennium. What you will find is that, every once and a while, the lady you talk to before you speak to whatever head of department you're about to harass is the one who determines whether or not you get in - 'unscheduled official inspection' or not. Would you like to rethink your choice of the options I gave you? I'll repeat them for your convenience. Appointment, or phone call?"

Anne picked up the handset of her desk phone expectantly, one manicured finger hovering over the number pad.

"Of you had said 'I would be very appreciative if you could call the Director', the phone call would've been over by now. Listen to me - Mordecai won't abide by any of your nonsense, and so neither will I. I expect the agents and personnel who walk in and out of this building to treat me with the same respect that they treat their fellow agents with. Learn your place." That said, and a small, cheery smile tacked on to the end, the old woman pressed just the one button on the phone's keypad, and seconds later a male voice could vaguely be heard on the other end.

"Director Tavi, this is the main desk - yes, thank you, dear, you too. Now, I have a Mister Stanton Ryde here requesting an unscheduled appointment with you." She paused, eyes travelling from the her computer screen to the spy once again. "Hm... Apparently you're party to an unscheduled inspection of official nature, Director Tavi. Are you in the bullpen at the moment? Certainly, sir. Of course."

The handset was replaced in its cradle, and Anne held up another card that she had just removed from what appeared to be a central hub of electronic visitors' cards.

"The elevator is down the corridor on the right," she stated with a gesture before handing the card over. "Using this will have it take you straight to the bullpen. You continue walking forward, and take the first left into Special Agent Cephas' team's section. I, as a member of non-secure personnel, cannot deal with an 'AAA' card. You'll have to talk to either Director Tavi or Special Agent James Isaacs about that. He'll also be in that bullpen. Have a nice day."

No one could say that the SIB were a group of grinches. With the exception of Albert, their eldest agent, who sat at his desk and glowered at his computer screen from beneath the bright orange paper hat on his head, all of his unfortunate employees appeared to be in good spirits despite being at work during the holiday season.

"Mordecai - I mean, Director Tavi, sir!" Sarah Gill, the 'unique, not flighty' PA to the Director of the SIB, appeared out of the first floor bathroom and latched onto the Director's arm. Sarah... well, Sarah wasn't a field agent, and Mordecai's gift of Apple Sours and champagne had gone down ridiculously well. "Can you help me down the stairs, sir?"

Mordecai took one last look at those milling around in the decorated bull-pen (Romanae and Edan pretending to argue next to the buffet, James sitting cross-legged on the floor with Crepa and reading out of a Christmas-themed book, Benjamin and his girlfriend coaxing Daniel out of his self-exile in the corner of the office, Tommy playing a friendly game of cards with Doctor Grey and the girl he'd invited along, Iante, Michael and Min just arriving, much to Doctor Grey's pleasure, two other teams all in their own groups) and gently rearranged Sarah's hand on his arm.

"Of course. You shouldn't have worn such high heels, Miss Gill; you'd struggle to walk in those sober."

"It's a party!" Sarah enthused, grinning. "It's meant to be fun."

"Fun's one word," Mordecai agreed, stepping down the last few steps on his own and offering Sarahhis hand instead so that he could lead her down. "Next year, I think we'll send out a memo regarding alcohol abuse, hm?"

Between the laughter, the music, the odd phone call and Crepa's amused giggling whenever James put on a voice, Sarah didn't hear the Director's quip - and even if she had, she probably wouldn't have cared.

"Iante!" she cooed instead, waving a hand madly. "Oooh, he brought friends!"
