a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Ylanne

Registered citizen of the Terran National Government

Description

A slight woman with dark brown hair and olive skin, Rabiya, when she appears in Hataf-produced video messages, is always in the background, usually wearing a hijab over her hair, and dressed in warm, muted colors. There are not many images -- photographic stills or video -- of Rabiya available to either the public or to law enforcement or intelligence agencies. Those who know her well or those who know her in her own neighborhood know that she never wears a hijab in her private life, and usually dresses in dark sweaters and jeans, looking the part of any other soccer mom.

She dried the last dish, putting it away in the cabinet before heading upstairs, where two of the neighbor's children were sleeping, spending the night while their parents spent a weekend at a resort. Rabiya cracked open the door, checking that the two girls had in fact fallen asleep -- it was nine, and they were five. They had, and once satisfied, she continued down the hall into her own bedroom, cracking a book at her desk.

Rabiya laid down her book, shivering involuntarily. She vaguely recalled Latin from school, many years ago, and was somewhat surprised, to be honest, to hear the language again. Perhaps she was dreaming. She frowned then when the lights flickered, somehow unsure what was happening. It seemed like some specter torn from her father's visions. "Who are you? What are you?" She slid to a standing position, checking the windows.

"My sins?" Rabiya laughed. "I have no idea what you are talking about. You better leave before I call the police."

"God only knows what I've done, and Lord help you if you think you have the faintest idea. You don't know who I am." Rabiya's voice hardened and she considered the weapons she had stashed around the house -- here and elsewhere, though out of reach of the two children. "I suggest you leave. Now."

Rabiya raised an eyebrow. For the first time, her heart fluttered and her fingers went numb. What was this? Fear? It was not something she knew well. "Oh? A warning? Come you from some government, some religion, some power? What do you want? My death? My wealth?"

Rabiya Dolet raised her chin, narrowing her eyes. "They believe fully, and they do not fear death. For them, death is welcome. Defeat is not the end. These things they do not fear." Rabiya stood, staring into Leonidas's eyes. "But me? You do not know me so well as you think. I am a different sort, an odd mixture of fervor and detachment. You will find neither mercy nor fear in me, Mister Inquisitor. Your time would be better spent doing other things."

Rabiya Dolet shrugged in a horrifying callous gesture, spreading her hands, palms up. "If that is so, then that is so. I do not make their choices for them; their choices are their own. If they choose to follow my father's teachings, then they choose to follow my father's teachings. I would scoff to think I had any say in the matter. Now I think you have nothing more to say to me. If you don't mind, I was reading."

Samuel Caruso waited just outside the outskirts of Wing City, parked in a food delivery truck on a sidestreet between a small sub shop and a supermarket's side door. Beside him lay two thermobaric rockets and a launcher. He kept watch, waiting for the UCON convoy to pass through Wing City. On the eighteenth floor of a nearby high-rise, Hannah Shapiro sat in a rocking chair on one of several balconies belonging to their respective apartments, holding a small scope in her hand. She too had the thermobaric rockets and a second launcher with her, as a contingency plan. Samuel could not see his partner or watch for her, but he could hear her soft breathing in his ear. He waited for her voice to confirm the convoy's appearance, giving him the green light. He did not move.

Samuel Caruso unwrapped a turkey and cheese sandwich, taking a few bites, when Hannah Shapiro's voice crackled in his ear. "They're approaching, ETA ten minutes. They have airjets too. This is probably going to become a suicide mission." Samuel almost choked on his sandwich before swallowing what was in his mouth. "You're so disgusting, Sam. I can hear you masticating your half-digested turkey."

"God, don't do that," he coughed, wiping crumbs from his chin. "I'd still like to escape if we can. Let's not assent to dying tonight if we don't have to. Any idea how many vehicles in the convoy?" Not too far off, there was a small explosion and a few screams. "Fucking Aschen."

"I see two right now, could be more, obviously not including the airjets. The night sky isn't exactly conducive to good sights. And the light pollution means no night vision." Hannah's voice sounded measured, calm. Samuel wondered for a moment how the hell the woman never seemed to break a sweat over anything.

"Just two? That can't possibly be right." Samuel took another bite of his sandwich, intentionally chewing as loudly as possible into his microphone.

"They're closer now. I see four," Hannah said, her words crisp into Samuel's earpiece. "Five, now. Six. Yes, six. And that obnoxious sound was their gunship. I can still hear you masticating, Sam. Didn't your mother ever teach you manners? No matter, they're approaching. The vehicles are armored, probably each have at least four or five men inside."

"More targets," Samuel said with his mouth full. He stared at the side of the sub shop, old brick with some graffiti in a few different languages. "Next time, I'm sighting and you're waiting in the truck. Place is a shithole."

"Aim for the center mass of the convoy for maximum damage," Hannah said. "And for god's sake, stop swearing. That's the second time tonight. You better watch your mouth or I'll have to watch it for you. Here they come. Less than five minutes now."

Hannah Shapiro frowned. "It's the Aschen again. Flames making it hard to see. Get ready, Sam. Stop eating your sandwich; food can wait. You'll need to reload quickly because they'll shoot back, and you don't want to be dead. Trust me."

Samuel stuffed the last of the sandwich between his gaping jaws, grabbing the launcher and one of the thermobaric rockets, which he began to prep and load. "Tell me when, cause the doors on this truck are closed tight. I don't want any random civvies watching me with this thing."

"Less than one minute, fifteen hundred meters and closing," Hannah said calmly. At one thousand meters, they would fire; that was the plan. Through his earpiece, Samuel could hear Hannah prepping her launcher too.

Hannah Shapiro's pulse quickened. She sat on the edge of the chair, the launcher strapped to her shoulder. "Target the two vehicles in the center of the convoy. That's where the key targets are. Twelve hundred meters..." Samuel Caruso scrambled out of the truck, with his launcher strapped to his shoulder and the second rocket in hand, slamming the truck's door shut. He listened for a moment, but no one on the street peeped. "Eleven hundred meters," said Hannah's calculating voice. Samuel took up position at the corner of the side street and the avenue, where the building offered him some protection.

Hannah Shapiro's voice was deathly calm. "One thousand meters. NOW." Hannah stood on the balcony and Samuel knelt beside the supermarket, Hannah's voice echoing in his mind as his fingers moved with habit, suggesting great familiarity with the weapon he was holding. The two of them launched their thermobaric rockets simultaneously, aiming for the Leopard and Saber...

"Second rocket, aim for the rest of the convoy," Hannah said, mere moments before she added, "and get the hell out of there, Sam!" Hannah hurriedly began to prep her second rocket and load it inside a new tube as Sam saw the plasma, rushing the ten feet to the grocery store's door and throwing himself inside the brick building as the plasma charred an enormous hole in the sidewalk, toppling a streetlamp and partially damaging the brick wall. Glass shattered and the light fizzled out. Sam coughed, shaking his head. He began to prep and load his second rocket as well.

"Fucking Aschen," he muttered into his microphone.

"Language," Hannah reminded him. Her tranquility never ceased to amaze him.

Samuel Caruso screamed in agony as the wall of plasma engulfed him. A block away and across the street, Hannah Caruso removed her earpiece as a shrill, high frequency emitted from it with Samuel's death. "Inna lillah wa inna illahi ar-rajiyun," she murmured as she launched her second rocket toward the Warrior. She too might soon be dead. Hannah wore a face of steel. If she died, she would go to her God, as Samuel had done moments before. As soon as the rocket tore from its launcher, she darted inside the building, making for the emergency stairs...

"Shapiro? Caruso?" An accented male voice crackled in Hannah's earpiece. "Do you copy? Shapiro, Caruso, this is I-7, over." The message repeated twice. Hannah Shapiro did not respond. She lay half-buried beneath a pile of debris in what used to be the other side of the building, near the twisted hulk of metal that had been the door to the emergency stairs. Her eyes were glassy and blood pooled around her head from a bullet wound to the side of her face. More blood appeared from a hole in her back. She could have been dead. But the fact that she was breathing suggested otherwise.

Her consciousness bubbled upward and her eyes fluttered open to an explosion of pain against her side, burning agony shooting through her veins. She had been shot. She tried to wipe the blood from her face, but found her hands were bound. Hannah squeezed her eyes shut for a moment and then reopened them. The agent's face blurred into focus, looming over her. Her eyes rolled upward to meet his.

She laughed, a harsh, choked sound that sputtered into a wracking, painful cough. "You wish," Hannah drawled. She gave the man an eerie smile. "Didn't you ever go to an interrogation class?" she said with great disdain, her manner frighteningly calm. "You're doing it all wrong, naturally." She, like the thousands of other Hataf operatives dispatched across Terra, was entirely expendable, and Hannah had no desire to prolong her life were her God to demand it be given for him.

Amidst the bustling city of Cairo with its sweeping skyscrapers and crowded streets, traffic whizzing in a storm of conversations, from the locals and the tourists, on everything from second cousins once removed to the political state of affairs internally and with other nations. Rifa'a el-Tahtawi Street served as host to dozens of corporate offices, glass and stone paneled buildings housing every manner of business. Another modern city rising from the supposedly barbarian Arabs. Number 1093 looked like all the rest, a six story building shared by three firms. One of those was Hataf's Directorate of Public Relations. Its name on paper was Muđahedin al-Qiyāmah, but it was known to the world as Hataf's media branch. Inside the lobby, a receptionist sat behind a high, wooden desk, receiving visitors for any of the three firms. There were several people loitering outside the building and inside its lobby. At least one was a Hataf courier.

Inside, a security guard greeted them, directing them toward the receptionist, a young woman with a translucent hijab scarf perched haphazardly over her hair in a decidedly anti-conservative fashion. "Assalamu alaykum," she said with a small smile, looking up at the three visitors. "Mumken assaduk?" Peace be upon you. May I help you? After all, it was Egypt. In a small office like this, Arabic proficiency or fluency was assumed.
