Setting
"So you've seen nothing unusual? What happened to those credits you got? Were they any good?"
He gave the dragonborn a pointed look, "And don't look like that at the sign. I'll have you know that it's a regular stop joy-ride, I'm loyal to my whores."
He looked over at Yanni, examining her injuries - those that he could see. "I notice that now. Can't you skip town? I wouldn't want to hang around with a guy like that after me."
"Skip town? No, I have too much going on here. You remember Kazen? He got hurt, too. I've kind of been looking after him. The Invictus leader told me she doesn't want anything to do with him. I don't have anywhere else to...really go. It's a shit home, but that's what Wing City's become. After all, I've got to figure out a way to kill Lochlyn and Jacob eventually."
"There's always somewhere to go. Even if it isn't a house or anything. There are always new places."
She gave Nathaniel a hard look. “I am Taima, Herald of Ahuma, Patron deity of the Draconians. A reckoning is coming, and warriors will be called. We would call upon the last Seraph of old to remember his sacred duty, to remember that the lives of the multitudes do not rest in the hands of a few religious leaders whose bones have long turned to dust in the earth.”
She did not wait for a response as she simply turned to depart, leaving Nethanial to his evening.
She came up to a two-story house, partly made of brick, partly of wood. It was mostly painted white, and seemed quite decent. Yanni slipped keys out of her pocket, then sifted through them to find the one bronze-colored key on the carabiner. She jammed it in the door, and opened it.
"Welcome to my humble abode. It's nothing special, but it's comfortable."
He threw his arms up, "Somehow I doubt the Pope of the present day would be any happier than the last lot to have an 'angel' turning up on his doorstep that like drugs, alcohol and sleeping with both genders. Yeah, you walk away. I'm going to find a late night store and buy some pastries."
Footsteps thumped upstairs as Yanni made her way to the guest bedroom, knocking on the door softly. "Adrian?" she called. "Are you awake? I've got some food downstairs, if you're hungry. I don't know what you like to eat, but if it's anything like what Kazen would call a 'Yank breakfast,' then I think I've done the right thing."
She waited for an answer, rocking back onto her heels.
"I'll be there in a minute," he called through the door, sliding out of the bed and starting to pull his clothes on. The smell of food was another big motivator. Waking up to breakfast smells was a new experience, and it sure beat just nabbing a pastry from town. Those always tasted dry with a hint of guilt.
The house wasn't a mansion, but it was still quite large. Two floors and a basement, which Yanni was sure was haunted and never had the guts to enter. Each floor was broad, with only one bedroom downstairs, and two bedrooms up. Each had its own bathroom. Very large bathrooms. The kitchen? Huge. With counters on every wall and an island in the middle, with stools pulled up to it. White tile and oak made up the room. A dream kitchen, to most.
As the food finished, Yanni put down two bowls of soup, plates filled with bacon, eggs, a grilled cheese sandwich, and waffles. There was a mug of hot chocolate for them both.
She sat on one side of the island, picking up a few grapes to plop into her mouth. This would be the first time in a while she wouldn't have dined alone in her own house.
It was nice. "Whoa," he said as he sat himself down, taking in the array of food, "You really went all out, huh? You don't have to make so much effort for me, you know. But thanks, a lot."
The youth wasn't exactly sure what to say, and whether he was supposed to wait to eat till after ... something. It'd take a while to get used to sitting down and eating a meal at a table, with company.
"You seem a little amazed. How long has it been since you've had a full meal?" she asked, slightly concerned. "Oh, and I hope you don't mind mushrooms. I didn't, uh, I didn't have a lot of...meat or anything to make the soup out of instead. Go ahead and chow down!"
This was a little awkward for the woman. She was never used to...well, Adrian wasn't a child, but he was someone younger that she was somewhat taking care of, and she was sitting down to eat with someone. She hadn't even done such a thing with Kazen before. It wasn't just Adrian who had to get used to it.
But she really didn't mind.
"Uhm, a while. I eat alright, mostly things people or shops won't miss." He admitted, "Shoplifting is really .. easy for me."
Coughing, he trailed off. He didn't imagine that Yanni would care much about petty crime, but it was still sort of awkward to bring up.
"Ohh, yeah. I remember those days." she laughed guiltily. "Stealing fruit and rooftop jumping to run from the vendors. A bit of a different experience from your own, I'm sure, but I understand." She had one elbow on the table as she began to eat a bit, herself.
"Oh, ah, I thought I might let you know Kazen's going to come live here, so if you plan on staying any longer, just, ah, just a heads up. I'm sure you understand what that means," she told him, eyes flickering to his face. "With us three in one place, I wouldn't be surprised if, somehow, Jacob and Lochlyn were to show up at one point. We're doing everything we can to avoid that, but...well, it can be hard. There's actually quite a bit I'd like to speak to you about to do with them."
Teenage boys were teenage boys, what were you gonna do? "But yeah, okay. I can live with that. What was it you wanted to talk about?"
"Oh! Nononononono. I didn't mean...that. I didn't mean that. I haven't even-" She held up one finger, biting her lips. "So, about Lochlyn. Well, it's obvious he, ah. Well, Adrian, we need to kill him. We're going to kill him. And his son. And I want you to help. Is this too soon?"
"But if you don't want to take that risk, I won't force you to."
He wasn't the bravest guy, for sure. He specialised in hiding from everything - danger, consequences, responsibility... memory. He hardly knew these guys, he didn't owe them anything in the grand scheme of things...
"I..." Adrian began, looking up, "I'll do it. I don't know much about this guy, but what I do know ... if it'll mean you guys can get rid of him, I'll do it."
