Setting
"Being normal is just as strange for me. I've been trying to show some semblance of connection with the kid, and I guess that went alright until I asked him to risk his life, but..." She trailed off with a slight grimace, then continued after the pause.
"What do we do, Kazen? What do we do now?"
"I'm hungry, I need new clothes and Sonia, one of our resident brains, wants me to head down to her lab." He told Yanni, "Let's go eat, pick me out some new clothes and then I'll head to The Palace."
"Before you ask, if you were gonna, you can't come with me to The Palace. At least not to meet Sonia at her lab. We don't allow outsiders into such places. Even if they're family."
Not that any of those turned out particularly well...
"You're leaving now?" she asked, frowning. "Oh, ah...alright. You'll remember how to get back here? I'm...not doing much else the rest of the day, so I'll be here when you get home." Something about her next thought allowed her to grin.
"I'll make dinner."
He remembered when Yuriko tried to cook once, their first apartment burned down.
"...but if it comes to it, I can cook a separate dinner for him later."
The woman closed her eyes, face down in a pillow, and felt herself drifting. Visions of events from the last three days flashed by her eyes.
...that kiss.
With a frustrated grunt, Yanni put the pillow over her head.
With a foot he carefully shut the door behind himself, moving to place the boxes down against a nearby wall. "Oi, Yanni." He called out, "Irish Thunder's here, love." The Irishman said jokingly.
"It at least looks like you haven't gotten yourself into trouble."
"I hope bein' gone ain't a problem? I won't be havin' to leave for much longer." He said, "Apparently there ain't no need for me at this point."
She was sure she had seen Kazen around before they actually sat down and spoke to one another for the first time. She remembered the Invictus prowling around all the time. Kazen had been there all those years ago, too.
"My lack of things to do preceded my injuries, darlin'. I can't pretend I don't know why. Myself and my family don't quite get respect from our own these days." He said, "Except me ma', sisters and me older brother."
"Other than your mother, your sisters, and your older brother, who else do you have in your family?"
"Do you?" Kazen asked, "I don't want to jump the gun, darlin'."
"What was it like growing up in a big family?"
"When Ireland freed itself from the British my family was one of the families that played a big role." Kazen said as he sat down, "My father was actually elected president, he served in the military. As did many of me family, many gettin' into politics." He told Yanni.
"Me da' was the de facto head of the family until he died, that's when the fighting hit the surface but it was there before he just kept it under control."
"As for normal families you're barkin' up the wrong tree. You might want to talk ta' someone else about that."
"So who's talking down your family?"
"Who ain't talkin' down about my family at this point?" Kazen asked, "Colin went on to join The Lost, he's fundin' the Casey mob, me family has ties to the old IRA."
There was a bowl opposite of her, still steaming from blasting it in the microwave, with the fork jammed into the side. Yanni stared at it with a sigh. Conflicting thoughts. Just about every part of her life now had come to difficult decisions. Was it unfair, or was it just her being stubborn, even spoiled?
Had life been too good up until this point?
Another sigh as she jammed her fork into the pasta.
Retrieving a snack from one of the cupboards, Adrian leaned against the counter munching. It hadn't taken him that long to become at ease with taking advantage of the offered food, for sure.
"...do you think I was a bit of an idiot to ask you to go after Lochlyn?" she asked him, quite honestly. Her tone was meek, and she seemed to shrink. "You think it was the wrong thing for me to do?"
