Personality Description
Charles is truly a character. As a kid growing up, people who knew him, always mentioned that his ego was horribly inflated, and his attitude was unbefitting of a gentleman. And, oh how correct they were.
Charles is by far, one of the most sarcastic people that the Western Frontier has even seen. Not only that, he’s a smooth talker and looks terribly genuine when words come out of his mouth. With a silver tongue and pint of ale he can stir up all sorts of trouble without even lifting a finger.
Despite himself, he’s actually quite a nice fella’. When he speaks to people, it’s usually with liveliness. He can certainly spin a tall fascinating tale if need be, or on other occasions he can turn a more serious note and get his thoughts right out and clear. His articulate speech is easily recognizable, this is even in letters sent without his name.
He has an unwavering gift for bravery. His mother always said that really it was just stupidity with a nicer sounding name, bravery, that is; but truly, Charles even despite fear which he has for many things, don’t get him wrong. It is but in spite of said fear that he won’t give an inch into such an emotion. For that reason, sometimes he casts caution to the wind. This could be good, but it’s more often bad. Thinking over actions is not his specialty. He likes action, and it’s certainly apparent.
Charlemagne was born during a period where hardships prevailed in a one small town with a dry street carved ruggedly through two rows of buildings, looking shabby and dusty at best. Rain didn’t fall much that spring at it was supposed to, and the crops grew scarce for farmers. This shut down all sort of businesses who relied on the local produce and markets that came. Poverty spread the resources of his village thin, people starved and he knew his family suffered for it just as much. With his sister, and his mother being the only ones around most times. He took the place of his father, and worked hard for many years since the age of 13 in order to keep the household fed.
At first, his methods were very honest and innocent. He worked to the bone each and every day from sun rise to set and sometimes far earlier and later than even that, only to drag himself home with little more than a parcel of his lunch saved from the farm he worked at, and a couple rusty copper pieces that were hardly of impressive value, and amounted to enough to keep them fed.
As years passed, even his boss at that farm witnessed hard times, and unfortunately every time from then on, when Charles went out to go see if he could help out for the day, the man had already taken more help than he could afford, and eventually turned Charles away for good.
Options were running low. Hunger brought weakness and weakness brought illness. It was hard to come home day to day to witness his family all but withering away, slowly dying from the hunger as it gnawed at their bodies relentlessly. And so, he took it upon himself to go back out into town one day. His intentions were very clear. He already knew the crime he was about to commit.
At first he was nervous. He’d never stolen anything before. He’d always been taught of the crime which it was. It wasn’t right to steal another man’s property. He earned and it was not something another person should get in the way of. But he suddenly didn’t care- the moment he laid eyes on the mayor’s house. The mayor of this particular town collected from each resident what was known as “tax”. This particular practice was one of the main reasons why Charles’ family was struggling and suffering now. Why they were sharing stale pieces of bread, and murky cups of water from an old but irreparable well. And here the mayor was, sitting in his nice three story house drinking lemonade, a delicacy of a drink due to the distance the village was from any orchard, and reveling in the money he collected from others, funding his laziness.
It wasn’t hard to make the decision, and Charles snuck in through a window in the back during the dead of night, and took anything he could find that would fetch a hefty price enough to bring back home.
After that, crime was… Well, it wasn’t hard to keep up the cycle. Things continued to get better, until one day he was found out by the sheriff and run out of town. The threat of hanging from a noose was soon cast over his head in the form of a good sized bounty and merited a sketch of his face on the wall of most establishments, and with time, it’s only gotten bigger. Still, moving from town to town with it, makes avoiding the authority quite easy. Charles has been slipping out of their grasps for years now, and he intends to keep escaping justice for as long as he can. To this day he doesn’t regret his actions, and instead, he embraces lifestyle that he just simply adapted and overcame an obstacle, and came out victor, all of this due to those unfortunate circumstances of his past.
