"I hope Callow can find his way home, Kid is so directionally challenged, I wonder how he manages to find his head on his shoulders. I bet your little sister is adorable. Is she the only sibling you have?"
Arturo shook his head "Sometimes I wish she was, I suppose you can say I'm the middle child of six siblings" he laughed softly "I have two older brothers Marcel who work in France over at the Louvre. Marcel is a restoration manager of 16th century art and Piotr who lives in London and has played Jean Valjean in Les Miserables for about two and a half years now , but they visit every now and then my older sister Catrina who still lives in town she is the head of science at the local college. Then there's me fitness fanatic, part time author and owner of a bookstore I also play the violin, my little sister Arianne is seven going on 17 she'll ask you anything and everything and won't take no for an answer and my brother Alistair is 6 and just wants to run everywhere and climb trees. " he laughed softly and slid on his jacket "You can help me taken the home if you like" he stood up tucking the chair underneath the table.
Delmy thought about it for a moment. His little siblings sounded really cute, and she didn't have anything else to do with the afternoon. She decided she wanted to go with him. She really liked his company, and she loved children, so it was a good situation.
"I'd love to," she told him, following his lead and tucking in her chair. Tucking his book under her arm, they exited the restaurant, and Delmy paused, realizing that she didn't know where the elementary school was. She turned to Arturo and grinned sheepishly.
"Where to?" She asked. He led her towards the school, and she followed obediently. Just as she had thought the day before and while she was walking around today, she thought the town was beautiful. Everything was so refreshing and free. The few people walking the streets looked so content, she had a hard time believing that this was real.
"Arturo," she started shyly. "This is going to sound really strange, but do you ever feel like sometimes, you want the world in your books to be real? Like, if werewolves and supernatural stuff was real, would you be okay with it? I don't know how I'd feel. Werewolves are cool and all, but if I saw one, I think I might faint. What would you do?"
"Arturo, This is going to sound really strange, but do you ever feel like sometimes, you want the world in your books to be real? Like, if werewolves and supernatural stuff was real, would you be okay with it? I don't know how I'd feel. Werewolves are cool and all, but if I saw one, I think I might faint. What would you do?"
Arturo thought for a moment mainly wondering what he could actually say "Well, I suppose in a way my books are real, most of them are based here so whenever I walk around I do feel that part of it is real. However I don't feel that werewolves would be a threat to me, I mean wereol Em's and wolves are pack animals and they only attack when they feel threatened, other times they are quiet reserved and cautious animals each with there own place in the pack" he explained moving his hands around as he talked, he placed his hand on Delmy's back to direct her to the school gates. He retracted his hand back soon after not wanting to make her uncomfortable.
He pushed open the school gate and closed it as soon as Delmy entered, he looked around, his tall figure able to see over the other parents. The bell rang and soon the children began running out to their parents. Soon enough Arianne and Alistiar came running out of the school towards Arturo racing to get to him. He bent down to his knees and opened up his arms as the pair came to him.
"Hey guys! Did you have a good day? Ari you did a painting, that's a brilliant giraffe. Ali put on your coat, I don't want you losing another jacket. Look I brought a friend this is Delmy. The new lady who moved here a few days ago say hello" He stood up Alistair hid behind Arturo holding onto his leg, eventually climbing up on his shoulders. Arianne on the other hand walked up to Delmy and smiled "Hi! Art said you were pretty, are you staying for dinner?" She asked taking Delmy's hand and pulling her along.
Delmy's back tingled where Arturo touched her. She could barely pay attention to his answer to her question. His hand was only there for a moment, but it took all of her mental restraint not to let the blush rise to her cheeks. She could hear the delightful sounds of childrens laughter and smiled as they ran out of the building. Two little kids, a boy and girl, ran up to Arturo, laughing. The little boy hid himself behind Arturo as he introduced her to them, but the little girl... She was much bolder than her brother and walked right up to Delmy, grasping her hand and pulling her along.
"Hi! Art said you were pretty, are you staying for dinner?" This time Delmy couldn't help but blush. The little girl, Arianne, was adorable, and Delmy couldn't resist her cheeky little smile.
"Um, I'm not-," she began, but at the pout the little girl started to form, she started again. "I'm sure it would be alright, if it's okay with your brother and parents, I certainly wouldn't want to force myself on you." She glanced back at Arturo, who was carrying the tiny Alistair on his shoulders. The little boy buried his face in Arturo's hair shyly as she caught his eyes. How cute.
"I'll have to just let my own parents know of course," she added. "Your giraffe is really nice! Do you think you could show me how to draw one of those? I'm a horrible artist." She couldn't resist little kids, and Arianne was just too precious. She hoped to play with Alistair at some point, but she'd leave the shy cutie alone for now.
Arianne smiled widely jumping up an down a little as they walked " Yay! I think we are having pork today, that's from a pig. Mommy lets me help in the kitchen only stirring and mixing at the moments, sometimes I peel the carrots. I think we have pudding too...Thankyou for liking my giraffe I can show you how I did it. I like drawing its really fun, you should never say that your bad at something Art says that you should believe you can do something, no matter what other people say, then you get better at things you weren't so bad at" Arianne explained waving her drawing around.
Arturo smiled as Arianne went off on one of her stories he looked up at Alistiar on his shoulders, he was still tucked behind Arturo's head holding onto his hair still watching Delmy carefully Arturo spoke "Ari slow down, your going to burst into flames in a minute. Ali what did you learn today?" He asked Alistair who stayed silent for a few seconds before speaking a small voice escaping from his lips. " we...had a spelling.I got 10 out of 10 and a star on my chart...if I get one more I get too choose a prize from the box...I made it across the monkey bars without falling" he paused as Arturo stopped walking they were at the bottom of the driveway looking up at him he lifted him of his shoulder and put him down on the floor his face totally serious as he looked at Alistiar who looked a little worried.
"Hmm 10 out of 10 huh? A star on your chart and crossing the monkey bars too?" He rubbed his chin as if he was thinking " I think that means I get to chew on your stomach !" Alistiar shrieked with laughter and ran up the drive. Arturo ran up the drive after Alistiar who tried to get away from Arturo who was tickling him. Ari laughed and pulled Delmy up the drive.
Delmy watched as Arturo interacted with Alistair. The elder DeGari was really good with children, and she could tell that Alistair looked up to his brother so much. The sight warmed her heart; he was such a nice guy to have time for his much younger siblings, and have them look up to him as if he were a superhero.
She stumbled at bt at Arianne pulling her up the drive. The little girl was so full of energy! Arturo and Alistair had run ahead of them, laughing and grinning and looking like they were having so much fun. She looked up at the house, and if she hadn't been impressed by any of the other architecture in town, she would have fainted at the sight of this house. It was beautiful. She supposed it reflected the DeGari family wealth, and it fit in with the surrounding greenery so well.
She entered the house after Arianne, who pulled her towards the stairs. She paused a little, glancing at Arturo for direction, then crouched down to the little girl's level. "Hey Ari, how about we go see your mom and dad first? I'm sure they'd want to know who the strange girl is coming into their house."
Arianne smiled and nodded quickly " yeah, mommy is in the kitchen. Daddy is in his study we can't go in there when he isn't in there, he has a lot of important papers and things. Come on.." She took off her jacket and hung it up next to Alistairs coat. She took Delmy's hand and pulled her into the kitchen where their mother was busily cooking. Arturo stepped forward kissing his mother on the top of her head "mom? This is Delarosa Skjarvo. The young lady who moved into the new house. Delarosa this is my mother Maria DeGari. She helped me collect Ari and Ali.." Before he could continue Ari ran up to her mother pulling on her dress " Can she stay for dinner mommy please? If her parents say it's okay? I'm going to show her how to draw a giraffe then I'm going to show her the garden"
Maria turned around putting her hand over Ari's mouth " homework first, then dinner then you can play. Delarosa, it is fine with me if you stay for dinner, it's a pleasure to meet you. I'm sure my son has been showing you around the town. You are welcome any time" She smiled kissing Ari on the head "Homework now" Ari huffed a little and ran off to the living room.
Delmy lingered in the kitchen with Arturo and his mother. "It's very nice to meet you, Mrs. DeGari," she greeted, feeling a little shy. "Your son has been very courteous. You must be so proud of him. Thank you for having me in your home." The woman merely smiled at her again and shooed the pair out of the kitchen, intent on finishing the food.
Delmy and Arturo made their way back to the living room, where Arianne and Alistair were working on their homework. Delmy observed them for a moment before stepping out and giving her parents a call. She called her dad's cell phone as she wasn't sure of the house number yet, but he picked up within a few rings.
"Hey Delmy," he father answered. "How was your first day exploring?"
"It was good, Dad," she told him. "Hey, listen, is it alright if I stay at Arturo's for dinner? I didn't think we had anything planned, but wanted to double check just in case."
"That's fine, Delmy," he replied. "I'll let your mother know. Be on your best behavior; we don't want to scare the neighbors on the very first day." He chuckled, but Delmy just let out a weak laugh.
"Okay dad, thanks. I love you, bye." She hung up quickly before he could tell another lame joke. Shaking her head, she rejoined the DeGaris in the living room. Ali and Arturo were whispering to each other, and Ari was humming to herself as she completed her worksheet. She approached the little girl and crouched down to her level.
"Hey Ari, guess what?" She asked her. "My Dad says it's okay if I stay for dinner. I can't wait to have more of your mom's cooking." She smiled brightly at her tiny little friend.
Arturo was sat on the floor with Ali his long legs stretched out underneath the centre table. He smiled at Ari and pointed to the next question for Ali to do. "Good job Ali, your getting as good as me at counting, perhaps you can work at the shop and I can got back to school.." Ali shook his head and giggled " That's silly Art...I'm not old enough yet" Arturo gasped loudly "You're not?...well what about all this hair growing on your chin?" He tickled Ali under the chin. Ali laughed grabbing Arturo's hand "No! It's off your chin...you've got a fuzzy beard like uncle Milo" he commented as he answered the last questions " That where your wrong, because uncle Milo is a big grizzly bear...." Arturo gave a little growl into Ali's ear " Go wash your hands for dinner you two and you can set the table today Ari" he informed and the pair scampered off.
" At least Ari's got a new best friend now, Ali will come around eventually he's very shy around new people" he explained still sitting on the floor.
Delmy rolled onto her stomach, kicking her feet in the air. The little ones had rushed out of the room, jockeying for the sink to wash their hands. She smiled at Arturo.
"Ali seems like a sweet kid," she said. "I'll wait for him to come around. Surely if he's as charming as his brother, we won't have any problems getting along." She stuck her tongue out playfully and looked away. Something about hanging around little kids brought her guards down, and she was able to get a little silly. She was glad for it because sometimes her parents assigned her to a childrens birthday party, and it those were the times she truly enjoyed working for them.
"My Dad's sister has these two little twins," she told Arturo. "They're really sweet boys, even if a bit high energy. They like to play ghost hunt and scare us all by hiding in the weirdest places." She laughed lightly at the memory of them.
"Arturo, thanks for, uh, your friendship?" She laughed at how silly that sounded. "I mean, it was chance that we met, sorta. Anyway, I think this is probably the least awkward introduction to a new city. Thank you, really."
"Well I'm happy for your friendship too, I think it was a very good chance of us meeting each other. I have no doubt that we will become firm friends" Arturo smiled widely he picked up Ari and Ali's worksheets and stood up. " Come on I'll show you the dining room " He held his hand out and pulled Delmy up to her feet not pulling to hard so he would bring her to the floor again.
He lead Delmy into the dinning room where Ari and Ali were already sitting, the table was large and could fit ten people around it easily but it was shrunk down to fit six. "Good job setting the table guys, are you going to show Delmy around the garden Ali?" He asked sitting next to his brother. Ali looked at Delmy and nodded quickly.
Soon enough Maria walked through with a large shoulder of pork placing it in the middle of the table "Arturo could you carve, your fathers busy in his study tonight so will have dinner later" Arturo nodded and stood up as he carved a few slices of pork, Maria came with steamed vegetables, mashed potatoes and gravy. "dig in everybody"
After the meal Arturo showed Delmy the large garden where Ari and Ali chased each other round laughing and playing.
Maria DeGari was wonderful cook confirmed for the second time with the meal they ate for dinner that night. The pork, steamed vegetables, mashed potatoes and gravy were so good, and Delmy was grateful to join in their meal. She regret that she couldn't meet Mr. DeGari, but she understood it when parents were too busy with work to join in a meal.
After dinner, the children brought Delmy and Arturo the garden, where they proceeded to chase each other around, laughing and playing. The two young adults observed them for a moment before Delmy got it in her head to revert to her childhood days. Narrowing her eyes playfully, she inched away from Arturo little by little, until she was just out of arms length. With a big smile, she leaned forward just enough and punched him playfully in the arm.
"Tag, you're it!" she shouted, and tore off running through the yard. Stunned for just a moment, Arturo chased after her, and the two engaged in their own game of tag, eventually joining in with the younger ones. Delmy was catching her breath behind a nice little rhododendron when she felt the first droplets of rain hit her face. She poked her head around the bush to find herself face to face with Arturo. Stunned, she drew back quickly, nearly landing on her butt. Grinning sheepishly, she stood back up.
"I think it's about to rain," she said, pointing to the rapidly darkening sky. "We should probably get inside before it-" but just as she was going to finish her sentence, it was like the skies opened up.
He chased Delmy around the garden coming face to face with her as they met behind a bush, he followed her finger as she pointed up to the sky he to felt the few droplets of water on his head as well as the sudden downpour. He stood quickly shielding his eyes to see where Ari and Ali were, he ran over to them picking them up he called over to Delmy almost slipping over " c'mon lets get inside, it's only going to get worse" he carried the pair to the entry of the house. He put them down taking off there shoes, Maria rushed over to the four handing over some towels.
" Get dry. Ari and Ali you can have a bath and get ready for bed soon. Arturo show Delmy to the laundry and get her some dry clothes I'll put the wet ones into the dryer to get them all clean." Maria ushered the shivering youngsters to the bathroom. Arturo panted a little wiping a few droplets of water of his face he looked at Delmy who was just as wet as he was. He wrapped the towel around her shoulders and rubbed her shoulders.
He guided her to the laundry room, he picked up a spare t shirt and a set of pants as well as a set of underwear. He cleared his throat nervously holding out the clothes to her "Here you go, even though my sister doesn't live here any more she still keeps her clothes just incase." He kept his gaze to the floor both in nervousness and respect. "Put your wet clothes in the dryer, you can have a shower if you like too.." He trailed off and pulled out a set of clothes for himself, he peeled off the dripping wet shirt from his torso and started to dry his hair with the towel.
Dellmy shivered under the towel Arturo had wrapped her in. And it wasn't just because she was cold. The man looked great with a wet shirt sticking to his body. She averted her eyes, hoping he didn't notice her staring.
They traveled to the laundry room where he handed her a spare set of clothes. "Here you go; even though my sister doesn't live here anymore she still keeps her clothes just incase. Put your wet clothes in the dryer, you can have a shower if you like too..." He trailed off, and it was obvious he found this situation just as awkward as she did. But then he started taking off his shirt right there.
Boy -- no, man. Arturo was fit. And he was ruffling his hair with a towel, making his muscles flex a little. How and why was he hiding that body beneath clothes? He certainly appealed to Delmy's very feminine sensibilities. She could feel the red on her face, and she was quite sure she had achieved a new, lovely shade of tomato red. She sputtered, unsure of what to do. And after a moment, she just turned around.
"Um, Arturo," she hazarded, afraid that if she let her voice get above a whisper, she'd be screaming. "While watching you undress is certainly not unpleasant, can you show me to the bathroom? I'll bring my clothes back after I shower and change."
He cleared his throat putting the towel around his shoulder, " Sorry Delmy...I suppose I'm used to walking around with my shirt of most the time...cause I work out a lot and stuff when I not at the store or busy with Ari and Ali...sorry" he laughed nervously "And Thankyou..." He smiled giving a wink. Out of instinct he put his hand on Delmy's back and lead her to the large bathroom, he walked over to the shower and switched it on the water spraying out hot water.
Turning back he pointed to a button on the wall " if you push that when your done it'll switch of, shampoo and stuff is there, big towels ar just there. I'll see you once your all pretty" Arturo cleared his throat stuttering a little bit " I..I..I mean not that your not pretty now cause your all wet...you're, you're pretty wet or dry...I mean...I'll see you later" he kept his gaze on the floor as he walked to the door. Feeling a little confident and felt he had to recover from his nervousness. " Hey Del?" He began he lifted his arms a little and flexed his arms muscles, giving a wink he shut the door and left to go and get changed into some warmer clothes.
Again, Delmy felt fire where Arturo's hand touched her back. She had an appreciation for the male figure, and he was certainly not lacking in form. He showed her to the bathroom, and proceeded to explain how to use it.
"If you push that when you're done it'll switch off. Shampoo and stuff is there, big towels are just there. I'll see you once you're all pretty," Arturo cleared his throat, stuttering a little bit. " I...I...I mean not that your not pretty now cause your all wet...you're, you're pretty wet or dry...I mean...I'll see you later." Delmy's face burned in embarrassment as he turned on his heel and began to walk away. At the last minute though, he turned around, flexed his muscles and left with a wink. As soon as he was gone, she pinched herself on the arm. He was teasing her! She shook her head and hurriedly prepared for the shower. It would help clear her mind and help her focus on something other than Arturo's nice body.
When she was finished, she toweled dry and dressed in the clothes Arturo have lent her. The shirt was a bit oversized, but the pants fit perfectly, and she exited the bathroom, following the path Arturo showed her back to the laundry room. Having put her wet clothes in the dryer, she took a moment to check her phone. There was a message from her mother.
"Hi Delmy," the message started. "The storm that's happening right now is only supposed to get worse. It's dangerous to travel in this weather so your father and I think it's best that you stay at the DeGari's. We've already contacted Maria to let her know. Have a good night, honey." Delmy looked at her phone as if it had grown a human head. Her parents were never really ones to be afraid of a bit of rain, but if they had suggested she stay, then it must be serious.
Delmy found a window and peeked outside. Sure enough, the rain was coming down in sheets, and lightning lit the sky like strobe lights, thunder booming overhead. She stared out the window for a while. The rain wasn't her favorite type of weather, especially when it was like this, but she found this particular storm calming. Maybe it was because it matched the swirl of emotions she had surrounding the new move, her new friend, and telling her parents about wanting to write. She sighed; it certainly had been an interesting day.
Ari was already snuggled up to Arturo she beckoned Ali over to bring Delmy over. He pulled her over and down lightly to the floor so he could sit on her lap to look at the book.
"Now. Long ago in Paris lived a handsome prince and what was his name Ali?" He looked to Ali as he showed a picture of the prince to him that look remarkably like Arturo. Everyone said so but Arturo never noticed it that much. Ali pointed to the picture " Prince Christobel" Arturo smiled and continued turning the page to show Elizabethan writing " that's right, now the prince was close to turning 21 and by both law and tradition he had to marry by his 21st birthday otherwise he would never rule the kingdom as king, which was what the prince wanted more than anything. The prince had to find a bride, his parents had lined up a number of beautiful and fair princesses for the prince to choose. But. They weren't to his taste except for one. She had brown flowing hair like tress in the wind and her eyes shimmered like stars. This was the princess he wanted to marry when he. Went to tell his parents the news they were thrilled and intended that the couple be married the next day."
Turning the page he showed them both a large picture of a wedding with tables of food and drink and people dancing. " the wedding was spectacular and the reception lasted 2 whole days. The prince and princess were happy until one night under the light of the moon the princess became angry a and said that the prince no longer loved her for who she was, they argued for a whole night and the princess scratched the prince right across his neck. The wound wouldn't heal and the princes life would soon be over, his princess came to his side and showed her true identity she was an old woman, her eyes glowed like the sun and her nails were long. She explained to the prince that because of his inability to get to know his bride to be before marrying her she had cursed him with a spell that would affect all of his kin for centuries to come. Whenever the moon turned to it highest peak, a pain would wash over the prince and he would turn into something that reflected his true identity. A wolf, with fur as black as oil and teeth as sharp as diamonds. There was a way for the prince to break the spell, or to ease its pain would be to share love with people no matter how they look or who they are. You want to know the really cool bit?" He asked as he turned to the back on the book with a large family tree that had been added to as time went on. He pointed to his name and Ari's and Ali' " here is our names and all the way at the beginning is Prince Christobel DeGari. But don't worry we won't turn into wolves when the moon gets big it's just a story" he smiled.
Delmy felt a tugging on her sleeve and was surprised when she looked down and saw Ali standing there. She let the cute little boy lead her to the living room. His voice was so soft and sweet, it warmed her heart. And when he pulled her down to sit on her lap, she could barely contain herself. He had warmed up to her after all! She was very happy, and made sure he was snuggled down comfortably as Arturo started reading them the story.
Arturo's voice was clear and passionate as he read to them, and Delmy got lost in his story of the Prince and his ill-fated marriage. It reminded her of Beauty and the Beast, though somehow a little more real. Maybe it was because she had more belief in werewolves and that kind of thing than she did in Disney Princesses. A chill even ran down her spine when Arturo mentioned how his family were the descendants of the Prince in the story. The story was fascinating.
"I wish my family had some interesting history," she commented. "I think the coolest thing is that one of my mom's distant cousins invented the windshield wiper." Delmy let out a little laugh. In her lap, Ali was starting to yawn and she felt one of her own coming on. It wasn't even that late, but she had done a lot of walking around earlier in the day and then running around with DeGari's after dinner.
He looked down at Ali who was starting to doze curled up in Delmy's lap, Ali was certainly a funny boy, wouldn't talk to strangers but would cuddle up to them for a sleep before you said ' good night ' Ari was still alert but was slowly drifting off, he closed the book and placed it on the table in front of him he scooped up Ali's in his arms and lifted him up so his head was resting on his chest. His eyes barely open now, it was only 8:30 but by the time he had gotten them both to bed and settled down it would be nine o'clock. He pulled Ari up with his other hand who started to rub her eyes sleepily " Follow me." He began " you can wait in my room while I put these two to bed" he gave a smile and walked slowly out of the living room.
He walked down the hallway coming to the stairs he lead Delmy up the deep brown step Ari almost stumbling after him, they came to a long hallway with doors dotted around each side. He walked to the end of the hall, opening the door he revealed his room. Everything was neat and tidy most of the walls were filled with books, in the middle of the room was Arturo's bed a large queen size bed with a deep red fluffy duvet. His desk was in the corner , his violin tucked neatly against the desk along with compositions of his own music. the desk was covered in papers some were typed out others in neat handwriting. He walked over to another small desk with a burning block for holding inscence stick, he struck a match and lit the end, he blew gently allowing the smooth scent of lavender to ease into the room. " Lavender helps me sleep better, would you mind waiting here while I put these to bed?. I shouldn't be longer than ten minutes" he smiled softly and exited the room.
Arturo's room was just as neat as she expected it to be. She assumed he wanted to talk with her more, which is why he had her waiting. The smell of lavender incense was very calming, and she took a few moments to look around his room.
The bed was very plush and looked incredibly comfortable. She walked the perimeter of the room, running her fingers along the spine of the books as she did so. The titles ranged for childrens books to sci-fi to high classics. She was very impressed by his personal collection, even more so than his collection of books in the shop. She would have to ask him about the differences in the personal collection versus the store when he got back.
She also saw that he had several pictures of himself and his family placed upon a small desk tucked in the corner. There was a violin leaned against the side of the desk and upon closer inspection, she noticed that some of the papers were his original compositions. Feeling a little intrusive at having seen something that should have been private, she back away from the desk and sat upon the bed once again.
A yawn escaped her as she lowered her head onto the pillow. Arturo said he wouldn't be more than ten minutes, so surely he wouldn't mind if she made herself comfortable. She didn't realize just how tired she must've been; maybe it was her own tiredness, maybe it was the soothing lavender. But soon, she found herself drifting off to dreamland, comfortable curled up on Arturos bed.
Ari was next and was whining softly complaining that she didn't want to go to bed but as soon as her head his the pillow she was dead to the world. He smiled and kissed the pair on their heads and went back down to his room, he entered his room the smell of lavender inviting him in. He couldn't see Delmy so he assumed that his mother had shown her to the guest room.
He rubbed his face and took off his shirt, he had a tendency to overheat when his slept thanks to the the wolf blood running through his veins, plus a shirt was constricting as he moved around a lot. Yawning he climbed into the bed and fell asleep into a blank space.
He moved during the night, slowly getting closer to Delmy without knowin. He wrapped his arms around her waist rolling onto his back so Delmy was on top of him. He buried his face into her shoulder his arms holding her close to him.
