Jonathan looked over his homework unable to really concentrate on it. He'd fought with his mother again about the girl coming to stay with them. He didn't think they had to take in a stupid rich girl from the big city, his mother said otherwise. He'd looked to his father for support but hadn't found anything, and he'd gained the opposite of support from his siblings since his other brother thought he was being stupid and his younger sister wanted the girl to come.
Now he listened to the garage door open. His parents were going to pick up the brat. He rubbed his eyes and tried to look at the math problem again. No use. He slammed his pencil down and turned around. His brother, Michael, was standing in the doorway.
"Hay, take a chill pill," Mike told Jonathan. Jonathan pushed past his brother and went downstairs to the kitchen for a glass of milk. Michael followed. "What's the worst that could happen? She's annoying? Just ignore her, you do a plenty good job of that with Em."
"Shut up," Jonathan said. "You didn't help the situation any. We're going to have some snot-nosed, rich ass brat who thinks she's a princess living in our home and ordering us around. Besides, she's from the city and they have weird ideas there."
"That's just something you stole out of Dad's mouth," Michael pointed out. "What's your deal? Are you afraid of falling for her or something? Don't worry, if she's pretty, I'll take her. I don't mind younger chicks."
"That's not it. Just leave me alone." Jonathan poured his glass of milk and finished it very quickly. He hurried to put it in the sink and escape from his older brother.
"You're just being childish, Jon," Michael told him just before he left the room. Jonathan stopped and turned to look at his brother.
"Childish or not, I'm the only one fighting to keep what's ours." Then he turned and went back to his bedroom to ponder over some modern lit notes.
