The preacher looked at the angel with the contempt of Nietzsche himself, the man's holy robes drifting out into the pale dusty winds of the dying planet. He adjusted his wide brimmed hat at an angle, looking at first with his proper, mortal eye, and then, with the cold grey of the Machine. It was a standard compound, with the demonic power still on the alert chart. Much had changed, even though the Church of Mota was rising. He had to do it, find the Mota chambers, and save those who needed it most.... but beyond that, he wanted to ask how, and why.
