As the panic in the street reached its highest point, something which had laid dormant for centuries was slowly awakening. The stirring incorporeal entity wasn't quite sentient as of right now, and it would probably be best if there never would be a need for It to become so again.
It was remnant of the Age of Gods, an era during which other worlds had freely mingled with this one. It had been a time of despair for the Midgardians, threatened on one side by beings best left unnamed, while having to swear fealty to some of the more humane invaders, most of whom had looked down on humans anyway.
They had done so at their own peril though. Humanity, while weak on an individual scale, had a power on their own. The human heart was a mysterious thing. As lives were lost in wars not their own, as survivors wailed over the loss of their lost ones, their emotions imprinted themselves upon the natural magic of the world.
Humanity's Sorrow had given birth to their greatest defense mechanism once, and humanity's Fear was waking it up once more.
