Hooves pounded upon the lush grass, kicking up mud as the dark horse galloped, his head held low and ears flat as he ran.

Litania swivelled easily in the saddle, her sky-blue eyes fixed upon a small point on the horizon as she peered from enveloping hood. The figures were more than a few miles away and it would take them at least a day to catch up with Litania's head-start: she could afford to stop. She needed to stop.

Turning back to face the direction her mount was headed, the young woman spotted a small village lying in her path and sighed in relief, patting the horse's neck.

"Lenna aremesta, Reno..." she murmured, and dug her heels into his side, "Yah!"

The horse's hooves kicked up clouds of dust as Reno's final burst of speed took him onto the dirt path and Litania drew back on the reigns gently, soft words of comfort rolling off her tongue.

"Nesta...nesta..."

The hot horse danced on his feet and Litania walked him slowly, trying to cool him down as steam wreathed into the cooler air from his black flanks, her eyes scanning the village about her. It seemed simple enough. Seeing someone sat not too far away, she moved the horse nearer, hailing the figure genially.

"Horan dei mellas, Jespa..." The sword strapped to her back was obvious as the horse danced sideways and the tattoos across her skin were fairly visible, even with the long cloak wrapped about her. In all, Litania was a formiddable figure, but her voice was gentle even in the strange tongue, "Kei yorat mei Reno?"

Ok guys - this is a general fantasy topic with a bit of a twist put in: the time period is about 1000 years in the future. The OOC post (link at the bottom) has more details about the general scenario. You can make up your own race and planet but your character must have a good reason to be on Earth. I'd like some humans if possible as Litania has come specifically for help from the humans present on Earth. If you'd like to join, please post character profiles in the OOC post:

She’d been running for two whole days, unaware of where she was going or of the area surrounding her. Stopping only two or three times when her legs started to cramp up or her stomach cringed with a need for food. Alicen hadn’t seen food since they were attacked; they’d barely touched their meal when it happened. She flinched at the memory, her small terrier following her faithfully.

It wasn’t until the middle of the second day that she found another village, a quiet one, in the middle of her path. Alicen walked in with caution, mainly because she never really left her farm at all other then to see her cousin who was giving birth to her first child a few villages away in the opposite direction.

She looked around; a few people were out doing laundry, planting or working on fixing their home a bit more. Some looked at her, and a couple waved or nodded to her. Alicen smiled hesitantly, and continued walking until her legs started to ache again. Taking a seat on the grass a little off the path, she sighed.

A moment later, she leaned back to feel her dog’s hot breath against her skin. She smiled, and raised her left hand to pet the dog whose wet nose nuzzled her. Soon she started to drift off into a light sleep, but five minutes into it she was interrupted; her dog started barking, hairs on end, stance prepared.

Alicen sat up at the sound of another person, "Horan dei mellas, Jespa..." she said. Alicen watched as a girl, no a woman taller then her and different from her in every way walked up to her. Alicen’s eyes scanned everything about her, from the tattoos, to the clothes, the sword which rested on her back and even her strikingly handsome horse.

She sat in awe at the stranger, "Kei yorat mei Reno?" Confused, Alicen shook her head, “I-I don’t understand you.” She said; her voice a bit shaky from nerves. Mimi started to charge at the stranger, Alicen’s hands quickly found their way around the dog. They struggled to keep their hold; the dog was not use to strangers and protective of Alicen.

Litania smiled at the girl currently attempting to hold back a small beast that was very intent on getting to her. Reno huffed through his long nose, watching the tiny creature warily with big brown eyes, his hooves dancing upon the dirt.

"Reno, nesta... nesta..." Litania soothed and the stallion calmed, huffing once more. Hearing the girl speak in a different tongue, the elf searched through her memory for the language - a scholar's tongue not often taught on her planet but none-the-less known to her. She would need to hear more to become fluent but she could at least attempt to communicate for now: even with her minimal knowledge of the tongue.

"Your...um, thesla...hound?...dog!" Litania smiled again, resting her blue eyes on the noisy dog below her, "It loves you, like Reno loves me. It wants to makda... guard - no, protect - you. But I am harmless to you: I wish only to house my kelari, Reno. Do you know of such a place?"

Sitting in a dingy inn just down the street of the two girls a stranger sat in one darkest corner of the dimly lit bar room. He wouldn't have a drink, much to the dismay of the inkeeper, but at the same time he wouldn't leave. He'd been there the last few hours. Listening for any useful information and speaking with a few perspective employers. So far he hadn't found anything of much interest. Most of the people around here didn't need protection or want anyone dead. Good for the town, but not for him. Sipping at his water flask he continued to wait. If he didn't find anyone he'd just have to move to the next town.

Alicen couldn’t help but watch as the stranger calmed her horse down, it reminded her of the ones she had at home. Had, the word lingered in her thoughts for a moment before the stranger spoke again. It was a bit broken but her language started to build the longer the spoke, Alicen smiled back before shaking her head no while looking around, “I don’t really know… Um you can try the Inn? They might have a place.”

She let go of her dog, who seemed to have calmed down after becoming familiar with the woman’s scent. “And I’m not even sure where the Inn is at the moment.” She laughed a bit while her face turned a light pink.

Inn...Litania frowned slightly at the word, trying to remember what it meant. Her gaze lit up as the memory filtered into her thoughts.

"Ah, a resting place? Yes, that would be what I am looking for," her blue gaze swept the village once more, her higher vantage point allowing her to see over various objects and her sharp, elven eyes seeing farther than most, "There is a building with an imass - a picture - over yonder."

Litania pointed to the inn and then, realising that the girl couldn't see, leant down, holding out a pale hand. "It will be faster to travel on Reno," she confirmed and then smiled, "He is big enough to carry your... friend also. He will be safe if you hold him fir... tightly. And I can pay... give coin for..." she swore in the elven tongue, obviously frustrated with her limitations of the language, "And we can get food," she finished eventually, smiling once more.

Re: A Broken Kingdom (IC)

Brandr had found himself working odd jobs since he found himself on Earth. Doing menial tasks for some rich lord who had large sum of gold, or grunt work for a group of travelers who laughed behind his back. There had been many a time when Brandr had wanted to show the humans what he could really do, show them their place, but he desperately needed the money and there only seemed to be these scum of the Earth offering jobs. The good jobs he had come across, through whispers at the local job markets and from recommendations were already taken by humans by the time he got there, and most of the time the man who offered the job would sneer at him and send him on his way.

It was under these circumstances that Brandr found himself the bouncer at some inn. The name eluded him and all Earth names where outlandish to begin with. He leaned against the wall, just next to the door that came in from outside. The lights of the end caused his scale like skin to glint, giving it an almost metal look. Beside him sat the weapon the innkeeper insisted on giving to him, some type of payment that was, the only good job he was able to land had the worst pay. But he couldn't complain, the town seemed peaceful enough and there hadn't been any trouble yet.

Imass? Alicen thought, becoming interested in the word before seeing the stranger point and hold out her hand. "It will be faster to travel on Reno," she confirmed and then smiled, "He is big enough to carry your... friend also. He will be safe if you hold him fir... tightly." Alicen smiled nervously as she looked at the creature, he seemed to be a little intimidating.

She gulped, reached for Mimi, took hold of the stranger’s hand and stood. She looked at Reno again; it’d been a while since she’d been on a horse. When she was about ten, Alicen had tried to ride her father’s horse, Ermel. He was mostly brown, with a white spot over his eye. The horse had a mind of it’s own, allowing her father to ride him from time to time and ignoring everyone else.

Her brother, Jacob, dared her to ride him and she took that chance. It was frightening at first, but Ermel didn’t move as she started to prepare him with his saddle, nor did he put up a fuss as she led him out. It wasn’t until Alicen was on him that he ran off, she screamed the entire way and hit a branch before falling off Ermel. He continued on, and she lied there on the ground, feeling the blood pour down her face. There was something in the shadows, but what she couldn’t recall. Alicen woke up to find herself in bed three days later.

Since then she stayed away from horses, until now that is. “Thank you.” She said in a low voice before following the woman’s lead.

Litania smiled as the girl accepted her offer for help, smiling further as she stepped away from Reno.

"He is big but gentle," she told the concerned girl, "He would harm none unless I will him to. But if you wish to walk then I will join you."

Unhooking her booted feet from the stirrups, Litania swung her leg over the horse's back, landing gracefully on the dirt floor. Patting Reno firmly on the neck, the elf turned, leading the way to the inn with the map she had fixed firmly in her mind at the first sight of it. "It is this way: not too far."

Only when Litania was walking could you truly appreciate the elegance of her elven blood; slightly over six feet tall, Litania's long legs moved over the ground with a grace that belied her tattooed and almost harsh appearence, giving her instead a walk that seemed as though she were simply gliding over the ground. Her black mage-like robes billowed out behind her in the soft breeze, revealing glimpses of pale skin and dark etchings, her simple garb accentuating her feminine yet muscular figure and long boots clinging tightly to her shins.

In less than a few minutes, the travellers reached the inn, it's low roof thatched with straw that had seen too many winters - green moss covering the surface like a sentient being. A soft murmur of noise filtered out the part-open doorway along with the pungent smell of woodsmoke. Litania's nose twitched as she sniffed the air, an amused smile playing across her lips.

Suddenly, the elf's sharp eyes spotted the shine of scales glinting in the sunlight, and Litania froze, Reno snorting loudly as he sensed the sudden change of tension in the atmosphere. Was she mistaken? Had they got here before her? As the figure in the doorway shifted, Litania relaxed, recognising the colour of the being's skin as dfferent to that of her persuers.

Turning to give a reassuring smile at the girl slightly behind her, Litania walked Reno virtually up the the doorframe.

"Kisz Lak Mar," she greeted the reptilian creature in his own tongue, folding a hand into the symbol of friendship, "Do you know of a place I can rest my kelari and purchase some meal items for my friend and I?"

Brandr had his eyes half closed, and was unaware anyone had even thought about approaching the inn, much less actually come within a few feet of where he stood. A rush of tension ran along his shoulders, which left Brandr with an extreme need to stretch. As he stretched he let out a yawn, it was then that he heard the elf. His eyes narrowed as his hand moved to the axe sitting next to him, elves usually didn't come to earth, nor would they normally know his native language, so he thought it was a trick. But after fully looking the elf over Brandr let go of his axe and leaned forward.

“This inn doesn't have a stable, the only thing even close is a barn thats rented out for me, your welcome to stable your horse there, and stay yourself if you like,” He said in as polite of a manner as he could afford. But inside he couldn't help smiling, why would this elf be so jumpy at the sight of him, and one thought came to mind. It wasn't him it was how he looked, and what he looked like, this lady just might need an extra arm by her side in the coming days. After adding things up, Brandr situation looked like it was about to take a turn for the better. He glanced over at his axe with new found respect, he had a feeling it might get some use very soon. He smiled slightly, hefted his axe onto his shoulder, and called into the inn that he was taking a break. Then he turned toward the back of the inn and started to walk. “I'll show you to it.” He called over his shoulder while he beckoned the elf to follow.

"Thank you." Turning to look at the young human girl with a brief, reassuring smile, Litania followed the male Dragoon to the back of the Inn, studying his muscled and almost worn appearence from behind. She wondered briefly where his steed was - you didn't often meet a Dragoon without his dragon nearby.

The elves from her planet had been a knowledgeable race - made up of many scholars and few soldiers - and Litania was one of the rare few that possessed both skills. Throughout her life, from a young child to a grown woman, she had studied the habitable planets and their resident species, learning many foreign tongues and envisioning dozens of cultures, while maintaining her duties of protection that the soldiers' training specified. Litania's curiosity was her single fault and the reason why she was now a hunted woman, but she could no more curb it than she could tell the stars to freeze.

"You are far from home," she said, speaking in the Earthen language for the following girl's benefit, "How did you get here without a steed? Did you come by space-ship or other means?"

They reached the barn and as Litania waited patiently for an answer, she led Reno to a bed of hay in the farthest corner and unhooked his tack. The leather saddle was thin and sleek - matching his coat and fitting him so perfectly that the muscles in his back were defined even beneath the soft material. Steel stirrups jangled as Litania placed the tack on the straw-strewn floor, standing straight again and patting the horse's rump.

"Imbala, Reno... imbala..." she murmured and Reno whickered through his velvet muzzle, automatically reaching to crop at the hay.

Turning to the young girl, Litania smiled, her hand reaching into her robes to produce a rounded, palm-sized fruit. It's soft red skin glinted in the low light with a hint of silver as the elf held it out. "Would you like to feed him?" Litania asked softly, "He is gentle and will appreciate the rulao from you."

Alicen had been taken aback by the man’s appearance. Being a country gal, she wasn’t use to the looks of woman she was now following let alone this man who reminded her of a dragon she’d read in fairy tales. What stood out the most to her was the cut on his face, it was long and deep. She was curious to know the story behind it, but remembered her manners and started looking elsewhere hoping he hadn’t noticed her rude staring.

She followed the adults, feeling a little timid and unsure of her self. When they reached the stables, Alicen watched as Reno was being cared for. She stared at him for a moment, her thoughts broken by a voice, “"Would you like to feed him? He is gentle and will appreciate the rulao from you." Alicen stared at the fruit, and then at the horse, “Sure.” She said in a light voice, before taking the Rulao and walking towards Reno.

She eyed him for a moment, before raising her arms and offering it to him. Alicen couldn’t help but smile as she waited for his reaction.

Litania watched as Reno whickered gently, lowering his soft nose to the girl's palm and snaffling up the fruit noisily. She smiled as he raised his head, sniffing at the girl's strawberry-blonde locks as he continued to munch, her hair whispering out behind her with his hot breath.

Laughing as Reno nudged her pocket for another treat, Litania smiled at the young girl, patting the horse's dark withers. "He is a good companion," she commented with a fond look at the stallion, "He likes you and that means he is your friend. Reno will protect you kow as he protects me so you will not have to fear." She looked down at the little terrier, grinning. "Or your little dog."

Straightening, Litania offered her hand to the girl, suddenly realising she had not yet introduced herself. "I am named Litania," she told the girl with a smile, "I am an elf from the planet Iaos, not so many light-years from here. I have actually come for help but it is nice to find a friend also."

Alicen laughed at Litania's comment, a soft laugh. She took Litania’s hand in her own, “Litania? That’s a pretty name.” She said, and she meant it. “My name is Alicen, and this,” She pointed towards her dog who was busy digging a small hole in the ground, “is Mimi.” She watched Reno for a moment, “I’ve never heard of Iaos… What’s it like, if you don’t mind my asking?”

Nexis walked up to the inn as the gaurd left for his break. He eyed their group carefully. It was an odd combination. Elf, Dragoon and Farm girl. Shaking his head slightly he entered the common room of the inn. His appearance was that of a twelve year old boy, although the creature inside of him stopped his aging at fourteen. He had looked young for his age then, he thought with wry humor, now as he was two decades over a thousand, this was certainly so.

Only his eyes showed the understanding of an old man. He was a man, despite all appearances. His competence showed to anyone who had the sense to pay attention as he silently surveyed the room. He walked up to the bar and ordered a beverage that children on this planet were not allowed to have. It wasn't so much a law as a habit from older times, when people had the time and inclination to bicker over every little way they could control each other's lives. The barkeep gave him a strange look.

"I said I would like a glass of liquor. Whiskey would be fine, I don't suppose you have Jack Daniels? No, I would guess not, I haven't seen a bottle of that in..." he sighed. If he said fifty years there was no way the man would believe him. "...ages. Soco? Jim Bean?" he threw a couple coppers on the counter.

"Listen kid, I don't think you should be-"

"Excuse me, sir, but I don't think what I should and should not be doing is any of your business. Now either give me service or I will take my patronage elsewhere." he dropped a bag of coins on the counter for emphasis. It was fairly full and tipped over showing a bag full mostly of silver coins as well as many coppers and quite a few golds. The man pursed his lips, but as he was a business man and there was no real law against it, he poured the boy in front of him a glass.

"Best stuff in the house." he said quietly and with no joy. Nexis nodded and tipped his head back, gulping the entire contents of the glass down in one go. He felt the familiar warming sensation and grimaced in disgust. The best stuff in the house was terrible.

Litania's smile faded slightly at Alicen's words and she rubbed Reno's nose.

"A long time ago, Iaos was a beautiful planet," she told the girl in a quiet voice, "It was very green with many trees and the rivers weaved their way through the land like veins - much like your Earth used to be thousands of years ago. Our architecture was made of a stone mined from the planet's moon that looked like crystal and so our buildings glinted in the sunlight like diamonds. But the K'Tar - a reptilian race with love of money and power - decided that the stone we mined and the knowledge we harboured were both valuable resources. We were a gentle race with few soldiers - scholars mostly like myself who took up the mantle of protection - and now Ioas is virtually destoryed through their greed. There are few trees left and our buildings have been turned to rubble in the K'Tar raids. We have less than a quarter of the planet's original population and those that have survived, are doing so barely in refugee camps hidden deep in the remaining forests."

Straightening, Litania adjusted the sword strapped to her back, wrapping her cloak's folds about her. "I have come here to find aid of any kind, to help us. In reality, we would only need a few strong minds: the K'Tar are cowards and only continue to destroy us because we are scholars with very little military background. One whiff of something more powerful - however small - will send them running."

nexis was bored and his Adende was thrumming behind his eyes. He knew the headache wouldn't go away unless he did what was asked of him. He sighed and went outside, gathering up his coins as he went.

There were a few ways to do it. He could drain the life energy out of a person, he could find a river and make it still for a while. But he preferred another method, at the moment. There was nobody around that he could kill that someone wouldn't notice that would also be enough sustenance to keep the Adende happy for long anough to be worth the effort. And the nearest moving river was a long walk from here in the same direction he had come.

So he took a flint and found an old felled tree. He gathered up some sticks and dry grass and made a big pile. Once that was done he kneeled down and used flint to set his pile ablaze.

He waited, staring at it from his kneeling position. People ran out of their houses to stare at the fire and to beg him to put it out. It was high enough to threaten nearby houses, but he sucked the energy from it, from, around the edges and down to the middle, effectively putting the fire out.

He was brimming with energy, fire was potent, and the Adende spun around inside him with ecstasy.

There you stupid brute, he thought. Now leave me alone.

The cat watched quietly from a corner of the hayloft as an elven woman, along with two others-- perhaps her companions-- entered the barn, leading a sleek black horse to a pile of hay. She placed her horse's tack perilously close to her hiding place, and for a moment she feared discovery. It wasn't that she thought of them as dangerous, so much as new and unknown, strangers who had yet to be labled as friends.

"Would you like to feed him?" the elf asked the girl softly, "He is gentle and will appreciate the rulao from you." The girl paused for a moment before replying “Sure.” The horse gently accepted the-- rulao, was it?-- from the girl, nudging the elf for more afterwards. She said something. Viridis's ears pricked forwards as she heard a name. Litania, from the planet Imaos, here to help her planet? The young girl replyed with “Litania? That’s a pretty name. My name is Alicen, and this,” She pointed towards her dog who was busy digging a small hole in the ground, “is Mimi.”

Viri felt a narrow shaft of light hit her back; looking up, she saw the horse Reno had torn a mouthful of hay just above her back. She cautiously burrowed further into the dried grass, for she didn't want to be discovered quite yet. Consequentially, she didn't hear all of what Litania said next, save for the part about the K'tar having taken rule of Imaos. Go, horse she thought, eat the hay elsewhere. Shoo. Unfortunately, Reno seemed intent on that particular clump of hay, his hot, grassy breath constantly following her. Eventually, she slunk out of the golden mound and sat close beside Reno's black legs. If anyone saw her, all they would see was a cat, evicted from her bed by a hungry horse.

She listened to Litania’s words carefully; Alicen could almost see Iaos in her mind as well as the K’Tar men. She shivered at the thought of them as Litania adjusted her things. “But who are you planning to ask?” She knew it was a bit rude of her, but Alicen had become increasingly curious about her new… friend.

For a moment, Alicen wondered if she’d be a fool to follow Litania, a woman she barely knew but felt safe with. Her right hand went up towards her left arm and held on tight, waiting for Litania’s answer. Although within seconds, Mimi came running between her legs. The sudden action shocked Alicen so much that she shouted and stumbled backwards, landing on her rear.

“Mimi, what’s wrong with you today?!” She yelled, before seeing her black dog running towards a small gray cat with beautiful green eyes.

Viri froze beside Reno's leg as the black dog Mimi pelted towards her. Her muscles tensed as she realized there was nowhere to hide. On a split-second decision she wheeled around and raced across the barn floor, skidding over the hay as her paws sought purchase on the ground.

She sprinted past Litania and the dragoon, making for the safety of the great outdoors. Looking over her shoulder, she saw her pursuer was still hot on her heels. Hissing and spitting, Viri backed up against a tree, swiping at the dog to buy herself time, hoping that Mimi wouldn't want to come in contact with claws. Turning, she scrambled up in what must have been the most ungainly tree-climbing ever to be displayed by a feline. Round, terrified eyes loooked down from a high limb. Thankfully, she was beyond Mimi's reach now.
